Mr Paisley takes a peek at MINORITY REPORT!

Published at:  Jun 07, 2002 9:45:19 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... We had a very early pre-cut look at the film a few months ago that liked it, then last week the folks at HomeTheaterForum.Com didn't care for it that much, and now Mr Paisley has seen MINORITY REPORT and dug it. The most negative comments from that HTF review seem to focus on not liking the visual style of the film, and feeling that it was ultimately annoying. Personally, I've really dug the look from the trailers... let's see how it plays for the whole film.... Here's Mr Paisley....

Harry,

Just got the chance to sit down and spool of some thoughts on Spielberg's
new baby. I was luck enough to catch a screening of Minority Report
yesterday and had to let you and the rest know just how good it is.

First off, let me preface this report by saying that I enjoyed A.I. This may
write me off immediately by many people, but on the whole, I enjoyed it. I
admired it's look and while bogged down a bit in places by sentimentality, I
thought it to be a bold move by an older, wiser director wanting to branch
out.

Minority Report blows A.I. to shreds.

As far as the acting in the film, Cruise gives a performance that sparkles
on may levels. He is driven, ambitious, angry, and compassionate in his
motives. Playing both the hunter and the hunted, Cruise keeps you involved
every step of the way. Also, in a welcome return, Max von Sydow is electric
in his performance as the head of the Precrime division. Honestly, both
actors are top notch. Another bright spot of the movie is the eerie,
haunting performance given by Samantha Morton as one of the precogs that let
the law see into the future.

Back to Spielberg. The look of this film is fantastic. By combining
excellent art direction and daring cinematography, Spielberg has given a
glimpse of the future that both wonderous and very real. This future lives
and breathes. Every gadget works and serves a purpose. Every gimmick both
wows and propels the story. Alex McDowell and Januscz Kaminski both deserve
to be recognized when award season comes about.

To sum it up, Minority Report is a winner. Those alienated by A.I. are bound
to think differently about this film. And those who embraced it, will relish
Minority Report even more. Spielberg has hit a home run.

Seeing two weeks into the future...

Mr. Paisley

    by djnut121

I think it's funny that any review that comes to this site that isn't filled with mispelled words and broken english is automatically labelled a plant. I know the internet does call for a lack of grammar and a leaning towards poorly spelled words, but some people who write to this site may actually know how to read and write.

And by the way, this movie looks incredible. Tom Cruise may play the same affected playboy in every movie but hell, he's damn good at it. Bring it on.

    A.I./Minority Report

    by fd resurrected

I used to be a fan of Spielberg. Then I lost my respect for him for that piece of shit The Lost World and another one called Saving Private Ryan, which is pure U.S. jingoistic propaganda with more gung-ho and little character development or the lack thereof. I still prefer that Terrence Malick, Hans Zimmer and John Toll win Best Director, Best Score and Best Cinematography Oscars for The Thin Red Line. The came A.I...I never expected something like that from Spielberg: a dark and intelligent science fantasy that doesn't pander to the audiences like so many of last and this year's shit movies do. Stanley Kubrick would be truly proud of Spielberg's achievement that Kubrick might not have matched (although I wish Kubrick would direct A.I. had he not died -- it'd be his last masterpiece instead of that P.O.S. Eyes Wide Shut). Read Captain VW's lengthy post explaining the true meaning of A.I. as Kubrick intended for the film to subtly convey the important message in the talkback at Harry's A.I. review -- an excellent summary to counter the negative critical thrashing of A.I. A.I. has restored my faith in Spielberg as a filmmaker genius and I am eager to see how he will top himself in Minority Report -- visually, philosophical and with emotional aesthetics with less or no saccharinity.

    "Minority Report" looks good

    by bad guy

And yes, we're all "Plants" who have been retouched in Photoshop. I don't know though, that wasn't much of a review. He just kind of glossed over everything. Oh well, at least it wasn't "spoiler filled". I hate that shit. "A.I" was a decent movie: Haley Joel Osment was very good and Jude Law's Gigolo Joe was very entertaining. Even the Teddy Bear wasn't annoying. It had good production values and visual effects and even a decent story. Yeah, it was a bit over sentimental, but it's biggest weakness in my eyes was that it was just too long. It just seemed to drag in a few spots, especially towards the end. I'm not gonna rush out to buy the DVD, but I'd probably watch it again on HBO. Oh well, to be the perfect movie, huh? Even "The Godfather" has it's detractors. Peace.

This is the only big budget Hollywood movie I'm looking forward to in June. Regardless of what you thought of Spielberg's recent efforts, (I liked A.I) he is a film-maker that cannot be ignored. Minority Report does not look like a typical Spielberg movie...that's reason enough to see it because it is a Spielberg movie.

And many parts, excellent. But I know no matter what is said, everyone will feel the way they feel. As for "Minority," I want to hear more. It sounds so promising and you know the first review from that Home Theater place, it sounded like the reviewer didn't like it because there was more dialogue, more ideas, than action. I found that encouraging because that was my wish for "MR." To be about Precrime and the consequences of this future they live in. I don't want to see Tom jumping and running through the whole movie. I want to see him talking his way out of this nightmare. Thanks for the review!

I just have to say that I read this short story last month and, as always when reading Phil Dick, was happy I did. I encourage all of you to go out and find a Phil Dick book to read, whether it be a collection of short stories (of wich he wrote multitudes), or any of his marvelous novels. The thing about his work is that most if not all are ideal for translation to film. Here's hoping they adapt "A Scanner Darkly" next....

To Plant or not to Plant...

    by the hillbrothers

Well, I think it might be a plant, too, but there are 2 errors I spotted right off (one of them is the spelling of "off" as "of"). Even so, the fact that this guy said he wanted to "spool of" (sic) some thoughts about how good the film was, and then turns in a semi-polished, semi-professional piece that HARDLY SCRATCHES THE SURFACE of the film is a big red flag to me. And trust me, I often think talkbackers are way too quick to accuse reviews of being plants, just like you fellows defending this one as real. And it might be... but if I were someone who can write as competently as this guy can, and compose thoughts on a film as seemingly intelligent as this guy's (although they're all just cliches, so...red flag again), If I were capable of that, and sending in an early review to a site as prominent as this, it DAMN SURE wouldn't be that fucking short.

    by aliceinwonderlnd

And what the hell else will be going in July? I had issues with the AI ending initially, but when I thought about it, it's actually kind of cool. Kiddie makes Mommie be the toy for a day. If you extort love from a thing that can't control itself, is it rape? And what is love? It posed a lot of interesting questions, but if it didn't answer them all effectively as it might, then I won't hold that against it. It asked big questions. And the FX were utterly beautiful. Spielberg is cool, when he can put a ball gag on his sentimentalism every so often. One minor whinge - the trailers for MR make it look a little overdesigned colour-wise, with its steely grays and blues. But maybe that's just a trailer thing.

    by ethan-hunt

I for one am indeed looking forward to the july release of Minority Report. Since i read the first production notes, and then heard that Tom Mission Impossible Crusie had signed on, i was hooked. The cast is well assembled with new comer Colin Farrel who is showing a great presence on the silver Screen (Tigerland). The plot is interesting asnd the visuals from what i have seen are unbelievable. The only thing that i am comncerned with is director Steven Speilberg. I wasnt impressed by Lost world or AI. You kind of expect more from a director who brought you the indy trilogy and jaws. Havent seen what the rating on this film is, imjust praying its not a pg13.

The Tom Cruise Movie Formula REVEALED!

    by mrmxyzptlk

Here now the TCMF (Tom Cruise Movie Formula) revealed: In any successful Tom Cruise flick, when we first meet Tom he is the tops in his field and thinks the system is just great... then he undergoes a change of perspective after a crisis of conscience... then he is CHASED by his former buddies (the obligatory shot of Tom RUNNING)... then he defeats the bad guys and discovers the TRUTH! That is the TCMF - hey, it worked in The Firm, Jerry Maguire, Mission:Impossible, Risky Business...and on and on, so it should work in Minority Report, right. Tommy Boy, get ready to RUN!

HOOK was wretched. A.I. was pretty bad, and did not know when or how to end. LOST WORLD was just this side of pathetic, and JPIII looks like it was made by Golan-Globus. Never saw SCHINDLER and only saw the why-was-this-ever-made PRIVATE RYAN because the wife was curious. MINORITY REPORT has an interesting premise but has anyone seen the trailer? AI, Minority, Spielberg and the prat (Cruise)

    by alpha

Ok let me get this out of the way ... I hate AI. I had such high hopes for it and I left with such a feeling of profound anger its hard to even voice the reasons why. Essentialy I dont want to watch a film about a psychopathic murderous boy robot with both a Pinochio fixation and a serious Oedipus complex. He sees a threat to his individuality and immediately goes into a psycopathic murderous frenzy. Their were so many sexual references (Gigilo Joe etc) that I found him sleeping with the resurrected corpse of his mother at the end more disturbing than it was probably intended to be but frankly very few scenes have ever created such a profound feeling of revulsion in my life. Why anyone likes it or can even tolerate it is beyond me but I assume you didn't get the same reaction as me (if you did and you liked it I suggest exstensive therapy). I think the fact that Osment was so convincing made it even worse for me because I really did feel like he was a souless abomination who should of been destroyed in a horrible way. In the end I felt the people at the Flesh Fair were probably more sane and rational than the other humans that were creating these monsters, and I doubt that was the intention. As for Cruise, he's a prat and he plays the same character with slight variations over and over ... if you dont believe me consider this profile - self absorbed, slightly selfish but kind of charming who learns a value life lesson at the end - now name the film ... Top Gun? The Firm? Days of Thunder? Born on the Fourth of July? Rain Man? Jerry Maguire? etc etc god even Interview with a Vampire's Lestat fits the general profile of the typical Cruise character. Spielbergs career has deteriorated from magnificent to spotty over the last few years but he can still do the job as often as not and Cruise has charisma on screen (even if he's an arse off it) so I hold hope for this film but I refuse to get over excited about it until I see it. I think too often we bag films or praise them before we see them, that leads to things like the reaction to Phantom Menace (a decent film but no world shattering one) which was unfairly reviled because it couldn't meet our HUGE expectations. I doubt this post is a plant, people love AI (as shown by above posts) and I hate it with a passion which sums film up in one hit ... its all up to the viewer to decide if they like it or not. See the film if you want and then decide.

    by fearsme

Cause nothing is going to stick to this film. Every negative review in the world wont hurt this thing. Speilberg has a built in fan base, and Cruise has a fan base 10 times that of Speilbergs. THis movie will easily get past 200 million without a second thought. Dont believe me? Exhibit A = M:I-2. Horribly reviewed, savaged by critics and fans alike, and the thing still made an ungodly amount of money. Minority Report may not be the top film of the Summer, but it will easily end up #2 or #3.

Think about it. Speilberg, those most popular director alive today, plus Tom Cruise, one of the most popular actors alive today, collaborating on a story by a classic science fiction writer. You'd think this would be a no brainer, right? We should all be dying to see it. Everything I know about this movie sounds like a reworked formula or some other form of cliche, which is a recipe for 2 hours of boredom and wanting my $7.50 back. I love my money way too much to throw it away on a movie makes me want to say, "I have a bad feeling about this."

Sometimes, I just hate Spielberg. My friends are still pissed at me for my comment at the end of Saving Private Ryan: the family huddles around the grave, the music swells, and a dog appears. "I hope that dog pisses on the grave." They said it "ruined the movie" for them. Bah. How emotionally manipulative can you get? Family, children, dog crying. Why don't they have a bunch of Nazis strangle puppies? Oh, and AI was excruciating. If only Kubrick had been at the helm. I, however, look forward to Minority Report. PKD is the best.

    A.I was a commercial success...

    by virkku

For some reason some people think that A.I flopped. A film has to make three times it's budget (at maximum) to make a profit. A.I cost 90 million so it has to make 270 million. So far it has made 235 million in the worldwide market. Making 35 million on the worldwide VHS and DVD market is going to be easy, and it will most likely make more than that. Especially DVD sales should be good since the film has a huge, highly devoted cult audience already and they are most likely going to buy their own DVD version of the film. Then there are the TV rights that will bring money to the studio for years. So in the end A.I will make a very healthy profit.

    'Emotionally Manipulative'

    by notafraid

I get so sick of seeing that. A movie is not allowed to inspire any kind of emotion except sarcasm. F@#$ you.

SPR, for instance, is about WWII. If the people fighting that war didn't take it seriously, AND emotionally, you'd be reading this in German.

    Just read the short story...

    by elicash

What a great foundation for a movie! The title has nothing to do with anything politically correct...it is pure science fiction. If done right this should be a smart, thrilling movie. I was delighted after reading the story to find out just what the "Minority Report" was! I'm already in line!

Short stories to films are best.

    by elicash

I think it was Kubrick who said that adapting a short story into a movie is the best way to go. Consider it an outline or treatment, then you are able to expand on it visually. With novels you inevitably have to leave out huge chunks of the book to make the film work, and that pisses fans of the books off. With "The Minority Report" I don't assume too many people have read it but try and seek it out. I am convinced that better movies can be adapted from short stories as opposed to novels. Examples? The Sentinel=2001: A Space Odyssey. The Body=Stand By Me. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption=The Shawshank Redemption. and so on.

We're not against having an emotional story, we're against being flogged in the face with an obvious emotion over and over in a hamhanded and obviously manipulative way. Rather than let it have an honest impact, he swells the music and so on.

  • I fail to see how the fact that I disliked AI means I'll only like Minority Report slightly less than those who liked AI. I mean, what's this supposed to mean? Is the rating "much better than AI"? Why? How? What?

    i hate E.T.

    by frank cotton

i didn't even notice the red coat when i watched Schindler's List. and altho i agree that SS goes overboard on the emotional crap, i still liked A.I. (even if it was more about artificial EMOTION than intelligence). the only real issue i had with it was the flesh fair. if it had not been for the typical religion-bashing, i would have rated it excellent (seems to me that your HUMANISTS would be at least as, if not more likely to hate the nonhuman. personally, i can get along with both christians and robots). i did like the IDEA of the flesh fair, as i am certain that that sort of thing could happen. teddy was cool.
