The Three 24 Endings!!

Published at:  Jun 06, 2002 10:37:37 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Another true story from Herc’s Bulging Strongbox:

Between the airing of “24” 1.22 and the airing of “24” 1.23, somebody forwarded us a synopsis of 1.23, a synopsis that offered a scene-by-scene breakdown of season one’s pentultimate episode.

Even though it came from an untested source, we were tempted to post it. It sure sounded like a real episode; the level of detail was especially convincing. But we knew we’d likely get to see the show for ourselves if we just waited about 36 hours.

Two days later. As the “24” 1.23 preview tape unspooled, we went, “Dang! It wasn’t a hoax!”

But it was! Everything described in the synopsis came to be – scene for scene – except for the very last scene! Where Nina-called-Yelena tipped the Drazens, our mysterious source had Sen. David Palmer tipping off the big bads.

Was the scene falsely revealing Palmer to be the mole scripted? Even filmed? Did Dennis Haysbert at some point recite the faux dialogue that never aired? Was the source of the false conclusion in on the deception? Perhaps even one of the series’ masterminds? Or just an unwilling dupe?

Much care was taken to keep us in the dark, O my brothers.

Now comes word of the three “24” endings. Just what will we see on that DVD due out in the U.K. later this year???

The key passage from yesterday’s Buffalo News:

According to [series director Frederick King] Keller, the three choices were 1) Nina (Sarah Clarke), the mole who was Jack's former lover, did not shoot his wife, Teri (Leslie Hope), before she fled. Teri lived. 2) Nina shot Teri, but she lived anyway. 3) Nina shot Teri and she died in Jack's arms.

    by croyd

How long til this damn fine program gets released on DVD in the US? I didn't miss a single episode, but that doesn't mean that I was smart enough to tape the early ones. I want to watch it again! (Except for the amnesia part, of course.)

What I don't like about this..

    by akbose01

It smacks of lazy writing. Let's just pick a random character and make him or her a mole. We can do it so lazily that anyone can be a mole. What's the point of writing a 24 episode story and not deciding who's the villain till the end? Hopefully with a full 24 ep committment they'll have a more planned arc.

    Who cares.

    by odietamo

It was awful. It got worse as it went along and Nina as the villian was the ultimate betrayal, because it makes no sense. They only had the first 8 episodes planned and they made up the rest as they went along. You can't do that with a show with this format. It sucked. It was a failure. And that's a damn shame, as most of the actors involved were really good.

    Palmer's wife

    by tar heel

Wouldn't it have been a total mindfuck if Palmer's wife was working with the Drazens? She'd want him dead so she could could ride the public's sympathy into the White House. Deceased politicians' spouses serve out their terms all the time. Looking forward to season #2.

I don't think he was referring to line of succession

    by akbose01

If Palmer were killed, say a week before the presidential election, and he was still voted in as president, would the normal succession rules apply? Like the guy who ran against John Ashcroft and died, but his wife was appointed governor. I don't think anyone can be appointed president though...

Actually guys, I thought Nina being the mole DID work

    by drath

Lazy? Well since the writers say they didn't have the second half of the season planned when they started, that does hurt the "genuis" tag AICN TBers are always so keen to give out if they aren't saying "hack." But honestly, it wasn't lazy. Nina's leaving the safe house at just the right time was suspicious, her sleeping with not one but TWO fellow agents and using those relationships to make devoted allies and mask her real intentions(first thing she threw in Jack's face when he initially suspected her too, planned or not at that point), all of that worked wonderfully. She was the only character at CTU that we thought we could really trust, which meant she was the only character who could do the most harm if she turned out to be bad. I'll grant you there are some unexplained discrepencies. The stuff with Gaines and Jamie turning on Nina at the start of the season hasn't been explained yet, and that's frustrating. My guess: Gaines was just a mercenary, he didn't need to know about Nina who was bigger than the Drazens' plot. When he and Jamie threatened her with Jack, she fingered Jamie and then killed her so she couldn't reveal more about the Drazen conspiracy. Another possibile foreshadow is that trigger happy sniper who annoyed us all several episodes ago(you know, the one who blamed Jack for something and was a real asshole about it, ignoring Jack's orders not to shoot); he might have been set up by Nina specifically so he'd mess up and shoot Jack's only lead. I don't remember the episode well enough to be sure, but it was such an annoying and unbelievable development(unprofessional behavior for a sniper and all) that I hope they use an excuse like this to justify it. I can understand being unhappy with 24, I was not as caught up in the second half of the season and a lot of that was because the mystery had been lost once we knew about the Drazens. Also, I admit that certain elements were getting to be too much for me(Terri's amnesia and affair, Kim's jail adventure, the somewhat obvious set up with Palmer's aide, Dennis Hopper's accent and GAP ads in the same ten minutes). But nothing's perfect.

I can't even spell genius. Oy vey.

    by drath

But regarding Palmer's wife, I wouldn't be surprised if she's involved in the conspiracy *next* season as she's got one hell of a motive to hurt Palmer now. "No man leaves me!" Or maybe that's too obvious.

Provide an informed argument as to why you like it or you are worse than me, living so meaningless a life as to idiotically lash out at a Talkbacker you disagree with. Coward and fool. /// For the record, I don't still watch it. And I don't intend to watch next season. As soon as they confirmed Nina was the mole I changed channels. Enjoy the tripe they place in front of you, sheep.

    Palmer's wife

    by deathass

I actually bet with my wife that Sarah Palmer was the mole. For pretty much the reason the person stated above. She wanted the White House. She certainly had some weird motives and was clearly in contact with the Carl & the donors (who could have been involved with the Drazens I thought). As far as succession, presidential succession is irrelevant to this scenario. Palmer was a candidate, not the president. If he is killed on the day of the primary (which presumably is in March of the election year), then there is plenty of time for Mrs. Palmer to get the nomination. The official nomination doesn't take place until the convention in August/Sept. She would have several months to build up the sympathy/"we got to see David's vision through to the WHite HOuse" platform. David's electoral votes from the primaries would have either transferred to her (not necessarily since the candidate actually "owns" the votes and has to be the one to pass them along) or they would have been left untouched, which would mean no candiate could secure the nomination BEFORE the convention. THerefore, it would have been an open convention and the convention delegates would have the final say as to who the nominee is. And THAT'S all about the party machinery, which Mrs. Palmer probably was quite intune with. As far as filling out his term as Senator, she wouldn't have needed to that for her purposes. The governor of whatever state Palmer was from would have nominated someone to fill the remainder. I know it's all a moot point, but I just felt the need to deliver a small civics lesson. Thanks for the indulgence.

    by neckbone

i can see one of the alternates being jack putting a slug in nina's head in carport. wouldn't fundamentally change what happens next year, and since jack pretty much snapped into a slim jim at the docks...
regardless, this show was outstanding. my only bitch (beyond the amnesia bit) was having the car explode over the cliff after kim rolls out. and as for kort villikon and the other haters, why do you keep coming in and bitching? i don't go to the 'charles in charge' board and tell you guys what a jack-off scott baio is. get over it.

We didn't actually see Nina shoot Terri. With a show like this, you cannot be sure it was her. Maybe next season we'll find out someone else shot her.

Herc can you PLEASE ban odie now? All he does is troll. Most of the people on this board are nice enough to ignore him, but all he gets off on is coming into talkbacks of shit he doesn't like just to cause problems. Is anyone paying attention out there?!? Oh and 24 was a lot of fun. I agree that the Nina angle worked, but it was clear they hadn't planned it from the start. I am glad they didn't kill her though because 24 without her would blow. And I am still amazed that they killed Bauer's wife. I loved it, since she was such a hag.

For you youngsters out there, Ford was never elected Pres or VP.
He was appointed VP after Agnew resigned then when Nixon resigned Ford became the Pres.
Atleast Bush went through an election.

The director they interviewed directed two episodes - 5-6 and 6-7 pm . . . right in the middle of Teri's amnesia subplot and Kim's subplot involving the drug dealers. Just about everyone considers those to be two of the worst subplots in the series. Why would this guy be hired back for next season?

    by fatal discharge

Not that anyone will read this anyway but....finally watched the final episode (because I missed the original airing due to a hockey final match AND I thought they were still repeating the show on Fridays like they did early in the season but OOPS they don't anymore, so had to get a tape of it)...and when Jack picks Teri up there is NO BLOOD STAIN ON HER BACK like her front. Therefore, she couldn't have been shot as (duh) a bullet would enter and exit the body. Also, due to her stomach being covered in blood (a head shot would've been so much easier) my theory is that Nina probably stabbed her knowing that she was pregnant so as to get revenge on Jack. I predict Teri will lose the baby but will survive herself. What do ya think?
