AICN heading to Vegas for CINEVEGAS FILM FESTIVAL!!!!

Published at:  Jun 06, 2002 5:29:57 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm pretty exhausted currently. I've been jamming a hardcore regimen of films fairly non-stop for the past few days as I'm currently judging the films for CINEVEGAS! There's a critic's prize and me and a couple of other typer of opinions are gonna get greased up for a grudge match 3 falls and out match to pick the winner out of this one section of the festival. I'm not supposed to tell y'all which films I'm leaning towards, but I will say that I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the titles thus far. Sometimes judging a festival is rough, this time through... it is a pleasure. Meanwhile, I still have to get my fix of classics here in Austin... and a double-bill of THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT and WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER could not have been passed up! Nor could the screening tonight of CROCODILE! Sigh... I'm an addict... And there's a stash of good shit hitting Vegas this week, I'll see some of y'all there! Now here's Quint...

Ahoy squirts! Quint, everybody's favorite crusty ol' seaman here. I'm currently brushing up on my blackjack skills, listening to Sinatra, Dino and various Las Vegas themed soundtracks (Fear and Loathing, Viva Las Vegas, etc) prepping for CineVegas, a new film festival that starts this weekend.

I'll be in Las Vegas giving you folks as complete coverage as I possibly can from Friday night, June 7th through Saturday, June 15th. I just wanted to let you fine ladies and gentlemen know what to expect in the next week...

I'll be hitting you folks with reviews, interviews, personal pictures from the premieres of some very anticipated film geek films and maybe even a peek at some of the crazy-ass parties going down. As for films, we got Sunshine State (John Sayles' new flick), Bubba Ho-tep (Bruce Campbell as old Elvis fighting a mummy), Poolhall Junkies (Christopher Walken. 'Nuff said.), Spun (junkie flick with John Leguizamo, Jason Schwartzman, Patrick Fugit) and Run Ronnie Run (Mr. Show flick) just to name a few. I've also heard rumors from unnamed sources that nip at my nap that SUPERSUCKERS and G are very worth checking out, though I don't know much more than that for now!

As of right now, potential interviews with Bob Odenkirk and/or David Cross, Clarence Williams III (how cool is that? It's LINK, man!), Bruce Campbell, Don Coscarelli, Ossie Davis and Dennis Hopper. I don't know if all the above will happen, but I'll be working my ass off to make it work out. Who knows who I might end up talking to out there.

If you're in the Las Vegas area, I have to put the call out... Sunday night, 7:00pm is the World Premiere of Bubba Ho-tep. You folks might remember the set reports I put out from this crazy little indie flick a while back (lookie here for the first report and pics: CLICK HERE) . Bruce Campbell as a geriatric Elvis battling a soul sucking mummy in an East Texas rest home with the aide of Ossie Davis, an elderly black man who thinks he's JFK. I know Don Coscarelli (director... he also did Phantasm and Beastmaster) and Bruce Campbell with be there, so it should be a big party.

I've seen the movie and can assure you Bruce fans out there that you won't be disappointed. I'll get a full review out to you folks from the festival, but here's a little taste: Smart, fun, hilarious and crazy. Bruce and Ossie have the most amazing chemistry in this flick. Did you ever think you'd hear Ossie Davis talk about the FBI dyeing him black to conceal his true identity as John Fitzgerald Kennedy? Can you picture old Elvis with a mysterious, possibly cancerous, growth on his pecker? You'll be clutching your sides laughing. Bruce just shines in this film, the first time he's really been able to stretch his comedic wings since the days of Evil Dead.

You Bruce Campbell fans owe it to yourself to catch this flick. As of now, it doesn't have distribution, so this could be your only chance to see this flick in a theater, with an audience. I don't know how tickets are set up at the fest, but information can be found at www.cinevegas.com.

If you can't make it out to Sin City, keep your eye on the page as I'll be updating regularly. If you're about Las Vegas, attending the fest, have a film at the fest, gambling your life away... whatever... and you want say hi to this lonely ol' seaman, you can email me at aicnquint@aol.com or give me a ring on my cell phone (512) 663-9146... if the above two fail, I'm sure Knowles will put his information up somewhere and I can be reached through him. (HARRY: Don't count on that big boy!)

This is gonna be a wham-bam, no rest for the wicked type of festival... 9 Days of debauchery, sleep-less-ness, fear and loathing. Should make for some interesting reading. Hehe.

I'll be at you this weekend with my first report. 'Til that day, this is Quint packing up his typewriter, uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, pint of raw ether... you know, the good stuff that Mikey and crew were always searching for. Farewell and adieu.

-Quint

    Two Things....

    by ericalan69

1.) To the poster above- Dude, when someone fucks up a TB, email the moderator of said TB (Herc if it's in Coax, Harry if it's in the main column or Moriarty if you can't get either of the other two) and tell them to delete a post because someone forgot how to use their spacebar (I'm assuming that's your problem, 'cause that's everyone's problem). 2.) Quint is a golden god, and should be respected. I love this guy's coverage, and can't wait to here about Bubba-Ho-Tep from the man.... // e.

Is this doc that's screening the same that ran on PBS's American Experience a few months back?

    Aye, alan.

    by gimlimcgimpy

I must agree with you. I prefer the Quintster's stuff to most of the other fools. He might not be the most polished writer in the world, but he's not jaded, he's got heart and is always very coherent in his postings (unlike some large red-headed men). Movie-lovers make the best reviewers, I always say. Fuck grammar and syntax. So long as it's coherent, it's good. It's all about the love.

    Amazing Larry

    by auntiemeat

Yeah, hi, Quint's girlfriend here. I really do not appreciate the things you say about my man, seeing as how you've never even met him yet completely and annonymously lambast him on a weekly basis on every article he writes. Just here to inform you that yes, his first name is Eric, but no, his last name is not Alan, his middle name is not Alan, no one in his family or cirlce of friends has the name Alan, he's never been to a city called Alan, and he's never had a pet named Alan. I don't know who this EricAlan guy is, but at least he's decent to my man, as opposed to you. Sometimes think that the person you're speaking to is indeed a human being who, despite your constant evil posts, puts out his opinions for the folks like Mr. Alan to enjoy. I would truly appreciate it if you did leave the boy alone. Of course, that will never happen, for I am sure you have no heart.

    Oh, boohoo

    by auntiemeat

Cry me a river. He says people that don't like a movie can fuck off in one review. That means it's completely fair that you berate him at every single chance you get. Yeah, sure. Dick.

    Hello? Movies anyone??

    by tokyo joe

Altogether now: "Shiny happy people laughing... Meet me in the crowd, People people! Throw your love around, Love me love me...". So this Cinevegas thing sounds cool! What's showing? Can we get tickets?? Star Wars 2 is gonna suck! Oh whatever...I'm gonna go argue the merits of Arnie's CG muscles elsewhere while you kids let this out your system...

    If you don't LIKE mooks...

    by auntiemeat

... then why the FUCK do you still read his articles, if you feel it's nothing more than that? That's what I'm trying to figure out? Are you some masochistic moron who can't stay away from something that causes him pain, and thus, gets angry and must senselessly throw personal insults at the person who wrote it? Without giving any constructive criticism at all as to how he could possibly improve? That is stupidity, my friend. Go back to PeeWee's basement.

    Well you know...

    by billy talent

I just went back an re-read Quint's 'Fellowship' review, and it is quite hostile. I know people who enjoyed the movie, but no one in real life has ever gotten angry at me because I didn't. I must say, that's pretty damned rude.

    Here's an idea!

    by pattyogreen

Let's all dislike a fellow who generally does decent reviews because he did one where he got defensive! Yeah! Boo this man!! Honestly, I remember how hostile the talkbacks were on the reviews before Q-ball's here. Talkbackers were being vicious in their hatred for what they thought would be over-hyped, and they were pitting war against all reviewers on this site who liked it. I can understand why he too the offensive. Pre-emptive tactics. Let's constantly harass the fellow because he did this! Yeah! Mob mentality is funny.

    I know what's going on!

    by rampagingtroll

Listen, sweetie. Larry's just another troll like me. I mainly surface for taunting sake, but I'll be sensible just this once. I think it's great that you are sticking up for your man. I wish I had more girlfriends like that myself, instead of the bitches that talk trash behind your back. He's just here because he's like me. He has nothing better to do than spend his time on this site reading what some guys who get lucky in life get to see before us or the adventures they get to go on. Don't let him get to you, we're just here to poke fun and forget about our own shortcomings in real life. We're just here having a good time at the expense of the people who make this their living. If Ebert had TalkBacks, we'd be there calling him a mongoloid fuck too. Quint seems like a nice enough fella in real life, and I'm glad you're happy with him. Now... back to annoying the fuck out of Harry, Moriarty, and the rest. I've had my good samaritan moment for the year.

    Las Vegas Cine Fest

    by msn web

    I was there, just
    a local citizen
    pondering why in
    2002 the local
    attendance for NY
    and Cine Fest was low.
I did a opinion poll (recorded)
    put on my web site
    http://community-2.webtv.net/dramxxo

    Like ships passing in the
    night Harry, Quint
    and others passed
    by me at these Festivals.

    By a tist of fate
picking up a copy of USA I didcovered Aintit cool.

Quint, we locals have 365 days a year for as you stated..9 days of debauhery.

    We locals went to
    see indie films,
    but we were shortchanged.
Tickets prices to high, not enough advance notice and
    no show stars. So
    spoke the people,
although not a representation of all people, just the majority.

If any of you reading this message send me your e mails.

Shortly I will be sending a Letters to the editor for all papers published in Las Vegas. On the PEOPLES POINT OF VIEW. We want to see these Festivals in time reach Sundance status. But putting at the bottom of
the planners marketing list..LOCALS..is not the way to do it.
    Mr.Hunter Thompson
    yesterdays review Journal, NORM'S
    column spotlighted
    your name.

    Regards to you all
great site, e mail me at Carol660@webtv.net
