I'll watch it now that Felicity is off the air. And if it's good, we all know what that means: The WB will shelve it in mid-season so that they can try to sell its audience another craptacular Kevin Williamson series. Anyway, I hope they kinda have Batman return on the season finale ala Alias. It'd be cool. I AM SushiX!
-
Do my eyes deceive me or does this look like it might actually kick ass.
-
I can only get sound, anyone else have the same problem?
-
I HATE DivX... Would some kind soul please convert to Quicktime or MPEG or something...
Pretty please? -
But who's playing the Joker? I remember early reports saying Mark Hamill was the voice, so is that him? And who's bats? And why does Dina Meyer cool geek stuff like this and Starship Troopers?
-
Well that guy who does the voiceovers sucks...I'm so sick of his voice slapped over every WB ad...uggh. The show looks pretty decent none the less.
-
This trailer for the show looks 10 times better than all of the Batman movies put together, that is not a good thing in the Batman movie universe.
-
That looked kind of sweet. I don't think i can't wait for this tv show to hit the tubes in Europe. Looks like i'm going to have to download this entire show. Now if the producers can put Bruce Wayne in Smallville. See if the audience likes him, then finally get this "Bruce Wayne" or "Gotham" tv show of the ground. From the looks of Birds of Prey, it can be done. Oh and Mark Hammill is a god!
-
Ah, looks like my prediction that this could be THE geek-cool series to check out next season could be coming true. Let's all cross our fingers and hope the producers don't blow the potential of this series in its first season. We don't need Batman in this series but the more references and supporting characters from the Gothan universe that they can add to this, the better and cooler this series will be. If the producers are keeping up with this website: PLEASE have Poison Ivy, Talia, Dick Grayson/Nighwing and Carrie Kelly/Girl Robin show up in this, and put Harley in her harlequinn costume by the time the season finale happens. We WANT to see these things! DON'T give us cheesy villains like what Lois & Clark did, and don't shy away from gearing this show toward guy geeks (the girls already get Smallville to watch). We would LOVE to have a comic book female superhero series that is NOT (let me emphasize NOT again) cheesy. That's all we're asking for -- give us the good stuff, and don't hold back. Thank you in advance.

They changed BC a bit for the TV show. In the Comics, BC was a member of the JLA who had a super powered scream Like Sean Cassidy. Later her powers were lost. and she became a agent of Orcle and Works with the B of P
She also recently regaind her powers. She was never a telepath -
I thought that Batgirl was Alfred's daughter in the movie, but was Jim Gordon's daughter in the comics.
What is the deal?
Plus, Batgirl is now Oracle and there's a new Batgirl who is the daughter of the greatest assassin in the world, Cain.
hmm. -
Affirmative action invades the food-packaging industry? I don't know if I'd call Shaun Cassidy's warbling voice "super-powered", but he was a decent Hardy Boy, I suppose. An agent of "Orcle"? That annoying kid from "Family Matters"? Sorry Lennard, I guess there's a lot of static on the line.
-
I think the only reason that Batman is gone is as an excuse to not have to explain why they don't run into him every two weeks. And I'm guessing we'll see: Dick Grayson (in some form), Tim Drake (likewise), Carrie Kelly (eventually, maybe second season if it takes off), Scarecrow (looks like it from the trailer), and an assload or two of other Batman villains. They could even have someone locked up in Arkham as a Lecter-type villain (maybe the Riddler?)
-
To me it looks like a polar bear in a snowstorm eating vanilla ice cream. sigh. sk
-
Wow, that's officially the stupidest thing I've heard all year. This is an Elseworlds novel, not a TV series. But we live in a post "Smallville" world so here we are. Thank God comic book based TV series are notoriously short lived. They almost never make it past four seasons. Some even die at two! God willing...
-
The trailer looks ok. Nuttin speacial but all the ladies are hot and the roof top leaps look fun. thing that concerns me is that will this show affect a bruce wayne crossover into Smallville? I mean since there are the same producers on both shows you think they'll try and pull the crossover bit now? and scrap the whole "young bruce wayne visits Smallville" idea? Could it be Clark Kent goes to gotham and stops crime with the birds of prey now? I'm not sure how I feel about that but now that I've brought it up I'm curious to see what others think.
-
Although the story isn't as good as the one about the rabbits.
-
There's some silver age mixed into this series (huntress being batman and catwoman's daughter was in fact a reality on like Earth 2 I think.) and there's some good bits of silver age mixed into the Smallville series (what with lex living in smallville) I dont know where I'm going with this. just thought it would be intresting to point out.
-
That "Black Cannery/Steinbeck" post cracked me up! Good job!
-
wonder if THAT'll ever happen. regardless, thats some inspired casting.
-
Which doesn't have DivX 3.11(I've downloaded the latest available and I still can't watch the trailer). You might have mentioned that Mac's can't play the damn thing before I spent half an hour downloading it, Hercules!!
-
I'm on a Mac. I have Quicktime 6 (public beta). I've downloaded all the Divx stuff available, including players and converters and extensions, and I'm still not able to see it. The sound finally started working after converting the crap out of it, but no video.
-
I used to live alot closer to DETROIT, but since I moved North the Comcast region I'm IN is out of Flint and doesn't even have a WB affiliate. I can't say I like all their offerings, but to not even have a choice? When my contract is up in SIX months I may have to go dish.
-
If this doesn't get too cheesy with the villians, stays away from the dawson creekesque stories then this will be the biggest hit this fall. Doesn't Warner have lience rights to Batman? Why can't we see more of him and the Joker, i mean Batman cabn't be dead right? What about two face? Man bat? ARRGGHHHH!! is it september yet!!?? Oh yeah the trailer? KICK A$$!!! nuff said
-
I really wish Birds of Prey was scheduled for Tuesdays or some other night. I hate the fact that it's scheduled to play head-to-head with UPN's new Twilight Zone, which I'm really looking forward to. Uggggggh! I hate having to record one show and watch another....
-
I too own a Mac. I had to download the DivX Doctor, the DivX 4D yadda yadda, WMAplayer whatever, and something else. I then downloaded the Mac DivX 0S 9 and 0S X thingy and put them in their prospective locations, it took about 2 hours of screwing around and obviously (as my post suggests) I'm not the most computer literate guy around. But I managed to convert the thing from avi to mov using the DivX doctor and see it. I think this looks kind of cool with the following exceptions. It appears like the Huntress is Metahuman which doesn't make the most sense as her parents were both human. Also, I'd rather they used the regular Black Canary from the comics. Someone that can see through other people's eyes and know their in trouble (while not exactly like Cordy) is a bit too close to "Angel" for me. Why not make Oracle/Barbara Gordon the one to track down the criminals and have The Huntress/Black Canary be the ones to take 'em down? Seems simple enough to me. Also, to put in my two cents on who I'd like to see visit the Gotham scene: Nightwing (duh!), Ras Al Ghul, Supergirl and maybe The Green Arrow (Connor Hawk OR Ollie Queen. Either one would kick ass). Finally, after a few seasons, managing to get the new Batgirl with her whole comic book history would impress me more than anything I have EVER seen on television. (And I've seen A LOT). Good luck Mac users. Try the site mentioned above. Look for the Mac version download. Then look up the DivX Doctor for Macs. That might help a bit.

it won't play no sound nuttin...it just says problems connecting to media. and i downloaded the codec server...damn

by inkymae
and the main reason the world watched Black Scorpion was for the cleavage. I am kind of intrigued by this project but am very very skeptical at the same time. the big question is if they can do a big scale tv version of batgirl, the huntress and black canary, and make gotham look cool, have the costumes and villains all work. why the hell don't they just do a really cool Batman tv show???

Get it there. Converted the nasty .avi to much more palatable Quicktime. Mac OS X only, though.
As for the trailer, I'll give this a shot. Dina Meyer is just too incredibly hot to not watch in anything. Really, out of the two chicks in Starship Troopers, who would you want? At least Diz got topless! -
They know how to do comic book related material for TV. They take these stories seriously, as seriously as you can take a comic book property. The dialogue in Smallville is very written well. It's real teenage stuff without the Dawson's Creek bullshit conversations. Not only that the action and acting is pretty great for a TV program. Smallville rocks and now B.O.P. looks like it's going to kick major ass too. I heard a rumor that the Spider-man people hired some of the Smallville writers to help out in the sequel. I hope it is true, this could only mean that the script and action will be elevated from it's poor predecessor written by David Koepp.
-
Buffy was first. In the pilot, she had visions of her show's entire first season.
-
I don't understand why people still use it when Quicktime quality is much better and works accross different platforms. All I got from the trailer is the image. I can't hear a thing. It looks like WB has sees it fit to swipe scenes from "Batman Returns" (the Batman/Catwoman scenes). Oh well, at least they used scene from one of the cool batman movies not the Schumacher's ones.
-
--- http://www.eyeofthesoul.com/bop/ --- 15.5 MB file and not the best quality, considering the source...
-
That was better. At least now I get an idea what the promo is trying to err...promote :)
Not bad although I need to see more of the show before making further judgement. -
Re-watch the trailer. Black Canary (this one, at least) does not see the future. She's a telepath (reads people's minds), not a psychic (sees the future). And it sounds like her telepathy is even limited to people's secrets, rather than whatever happens to be on her mind. Thus, she can probably see secret identities, secret bases, and even secret evil plans, but not the embarassing telepath stuff that usually shows up in the comics, like overhearing people's thoughts about dating, eating, etc.

It's kind of inspired, really. Since they're not dealing with "real" comic book situations, they don't have to show slavish dedication to established continuity in order to please hardcore fans. They get to mention all the classic stuff without being enslaved by it. They have total freedom. This show is like an object lesson in having your cake and eating it too. Bravo. I'll definitely be checking it out.
-
Hmm....."Smallville" is decent. "Mutant-X" blows donkey dick. I saw the cast pic of these girlies and lemme say, well, once again Hollywood is portraying HOTTIES as heroes. Anyone else sick of seeing SUPER HOT PPL in roles? I am. I don't want to see SUPER HOT girls fight crime. I want normal looking people casted into roles. "The Shield" is an example of that. Every cop on that show shows has the look of a cop. ONe has a mustache and another wears flannels to work. This show is going to suck if every character ends up beautiful. Oh hell, I think it's going to suck anyway.
-
There were no cool Batman movies. Just two films that kinda got it right and two other films that TOTALLY MISSED IT!
Michael Keaton, did an admirable job though considering he was still woefully miscast. But then again, you can't blame him for the lousy script. -

Snooooresville....do we really need more chick superheroes?
by kingink123
I've just about had it with skinny little chicks who I don't believe could kick Pee Wee Herman's ass. Now, if we had Tura Satana in a series, then maybe I'd buy it. Hey, why doesn't someone snatch up the rights and remake Faster Pussycat Kill !!! Kill !!! ?
-
Well that was much longer than I thought it would be. I like the use of Batman Returns footage and not the later films. But I don't know why they're doing BoP instead of Nightwing, a character well worth exploring in a TV show format. I can only hope he appears on this show, and won't be played by Casper Van Dien or the like. As for what IS here, I'm interested, it looks promising even with non-Batman cosmic powers. The actor playing Alfred Pennyworth even resembles Michael Gough! However, comicbook hero adaptations are not easy to pull off on TV(eg Nightman). And again, while I get the appeal of three babes busting criminals in vigilante action, I think this premise would have been better used on Tim Drake Robin and Nightwing, Batman's real successors. Heck, that'd open up the floor for Teen Titan cameos, and cool gal characters like Spoiler and the new mute Batgirl. Even Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle(best one in this promo even if she did star in Starship Troopers) could still be a regular in that premise. I guess WB wanted an all girl action show after a year of no Buffy(plus, they've already got a male DC hero with Smallville). Sigh. Anyway, was that John Glover as the Joker? It seemed like him when he said "knock knock," but I thought I'd read Mark Hamill was doing the Joker. Interesting possibility considering that not only is he Luther's dad on Smallville, but he voiced the Riddler in the classic animated series! And I assume that foxy scarlet-dressed villainess was Harley Quinn. I hope they're not making her a cool and crafty villainess. That's fine for Poison Ivy or Catwoman, but not Harley. She's nuts, she's looney, she's a comic villain who dishes out camp, not a snarling temptress. Why change her? Use Poison Ivy if you want the smart bad girl(hey, Ivy and Harley are an infamous pair anyway). And since they're borrowing from the cartoon, I wonder if they'll use Officer Montoya as well? Obviously I'll watch the pilot, I'm plenty interested, but I'm probably not the audience they're making this for.

by christopher3
But you're right. With all the Buffy reruns in syndication, Gellar's incredible-shrinking-woman act is all too apparent. She looked very nicely rounded in the first two seasons. Now she's a lolipop: a head on a stick.
-
She's gangly, but cut.
-
Mark Hamill didn't play the Riddler on the animated series, he played the Joker. And yes, that was HIS Joker voice in the Birds of Prey promo. They kept the face fuzzy, so I couldn't tell if it was him in the flesh, though. He might be a bit old to play the Joker in that era, although he still wouldn't be as inappropriately aged as Nicholson was in '89. Damn, I'm actually pretty excited about this idea. Whoda thought I'd find something to watch on WB?
-
I saw the pilot. Black Canary (and she isn't called this yet) exhibits a few psychic powers. Psychometry: where she gets glimpses into people minds/actions through touch, Clairvoyance: where she perceives far away events
Telepathy: specifically she mindlinks several characters at certain points on an astral plane, where apparently she can only watch but not act or be perceived.
Also Joker is voiced by Mark Hammil but he isn't in the Joker makeup, that is a stuntman/actor type who is largely unrecognizable.
They may be using Bat Returns stuff because I believe they are using that version of Catwoman as Selina Kyle is blonde (IIRC) and Helena has decidedly feline quality to her metahumanity (which you would expect in someone who was born to someone resurrected by cats, no?) -

1) This is the new show for next season that has the most geek potential. Remember, they have yet to film any of the episodes after the pilot. That will happen in July, so they're at the script and preproduction stage at this point. We should encourage the producers not to lame out with the storylines, and voice on this Talkback what we would like to see in this series. (Believe it or not, some TV show producers really do check out AICN. I know this for a fact but won't/can't name names.) Since these are the same producers behind Smallville, which has impressed critics and garnered loyal fans, BoP could become similarly cool. 2) Do Smallville and BoP share the same "universe"? I imagine that the producers haven't decided on this yet. So for the time being they're keeping the time period of BoP ambiguous -- setting it in a "timeless" era. However, I'm coming to like the idea of Bruce Wayne being much older than Clark Kent, and that Superman has yet to exist in the BoP universe. The setup could be that superheros like Batman were "old school" heros, who were normal human beings. But around the time period of Smallville and BoP, the era of normal human heroes is coming to an end (Batman leaving Gothan; Batgirl put out of commission). In their place, humans with supernatural abilities (Huntress, Oracle, and Clark Kent) are taking their place. Thus, Smallville and BoP take place during the dawn of a new era in superhero-dom. This could be a very interesting angle to explore for these series, and I encourage the producers of Smallville and BoP to consider this tact.
-
1.) The series takes place in an unspecified future. Fortunately, they don't look to be using this as a reason to get jiggy with the useless sci-fi gadgets and seem to be taking a cue from the animated series which took place in present day, but seemed out of reality (aka, all the TVs were in black and white and people drove classic cars, but at the same time you've got the hugo ol' Batcomputer that can do almost anything.) It gave Gotham a lot of noirish charm. 2.) Who's playing Jim Gordon? Does he even show up at all? One of the reasons I'll never forgive Burton is that he turned Jim Gordon, one of the coolest characters in the entire DCU, into a chubby doof. I hope BOP doesn't screw it up.

If this show works....Avi Arad will counter with SPIDERGIRL!
by thevision
Wednesday at 0900pm? If BoP can hold on to a young demo while their parents are tuning in West Wing, it will be considered a success. Haven't seen the trailer cuz I don't have DiVC or whatever its called but the premise is cool. Blending current continuity with DC Earth2 plotline. I'm hoping this show is going to be more action oriented and geared towards the fellas than that chick show "Smallville!" Not a bad show, but too far out of Superman continuity for an old time fan like myself AND I've never got the "Dawson's Creek white kids teen angst shit" that Smallville mimics. Anyhoo, IF Birds of Prey catches on, Marvel will follow with a Spider-Girl TV series. Same premise as BoP and take place in the future but Peter Parker and Mary Jane will be part of the show. The networks may tweek the costume a bit but I think Spider-Girl may work. Obviously, WB(DC corporate parent) will not do the show, but UPN and FOX might be interested. NBC, CBS forget it. ABC is desperate to boost ratings but the BiG 3 have never been keen on genre TV let alone an expensive series like Spider-Girl. Comments please!
-
I know Mark Hamill voiced the Joker, I was talking about John Glover who voiced the Riddler in the animated show. He is also playing Lex Luthor's dad Lionel Luthor (another LL name, what's up with that?) on Smallville. Plus he played Dr. Woodrue in Batman and Robin, so this guy's been around the DC universe. I was just wondering if that was Glover playing the Joker as it seemed and sounded like him, and he has a connection to the producers because of his work on Smallville. If it is indeed the talented Hamill, it didn't sound at all like him. Either way, it's really cool to see the Joker in the flesh again(and to see him commit one of his most infamously evil acts no less!).
-
Don't be afraid of COSTUMES! Put Huntress in her current costume from the comics. It's very cool and could easily translate to TV. Same with Harley Quinn.----If Spiderman's $350 million to date box-office proves anything, it's that the public WILL accept superheroes in costume if the story and characters are interesting and PLAYED STRAIGHT.
-
I can't see the trailer. But from what I've heard...Batman running off with his tail between his legs...Dinah as a teenage telepath...it just doesn't do it for me. The makeup and repainted BATMAN AND ROBIN Batsuits aren't thrilling me either. On a side note, I think this is set in the future. So SMALLVILLE and BIRDS OF PREY could be in the same universe.

The only place where it is stated that "Batman flees Gotham" is on the video box for the pilot which is reproduced on WB homepage for the series which is unfortunate. In the course of the pilot all that is said by Oracle is that "The Joker wanted to drive Batman mad (by crippling Batgirl and having Catwoman killed)and I guess he succeeded because a couple of months later he (Bats) left". There can be any number of explanations for Batman's disappearance...the box text was written by someone with little knowledge or understanding of the characters or the pilot.
There is an interview with one of the creators of the series over at the Gotham Clocktower that discusses the issue of costumes:

I "was" SOOOOOO against this from the moment I heard what Black Canry had become (DAMN THEM!!). Black Canary is aptly named, a former "Black" OPS CIA member that left the breau to stike out on her own and developed a "sonic cry" power. So as a blond (canary yellow) she adopted the moniker "Black Canary". See? It works. Now? A dirty blond that can read psychic emissions via physical contact? BULL!!!!!
I guess will just have to keep that eye closed when I watch this run.
I would LOVE to see the new Batgirl (imagine the angst between Oracle and her) and Nightwing make an appearence. Nightwing and Oracle sitting in a tree....
