ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Has The First Great Images From HARRY POTTER & THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Time/Warner certainly knows how to make maximum use of their own corporate assetts. Giving the first really great set of photos from the upcoming HARRY POTTER & THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY is a huge exclusive for them. I’d highly recommend that any fans of the books head over to EW’s site to take a look at nine great shots of the cast, including Kenneth Branagh, all three returning lead kids (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson), as well as some remarkable set images, like this one, which Columbus acknowledges is a nod to NORTH BY NORTHWEST:

Of all the images they ran, my favorite is a shot of Dobby, an important supporting character this time out. Readers of CHAMBER know that Dobby is a house-elf, a sort of enslaved magical creature who tries to help Harry Potter, even as he finds himself bound by loyalty to his owners, evil as they may be. I was curious about the visual style they’d be using for Dobby, and I have to say... I like it. I think it’ll be controversial because it may not be “photoreal,” but I think it’s an emotional, evocative bit of design work:

Anyway... good to see some of what Columbus has in store for us on this one, and I can’t wait to see what happens with the rumors that Alfonso Cuaron might be taking over as director of the series with PRISONER OF AZKABAN. I think that Steve Kloves is the one that Warner needs to keep happy, since he’s the glue that will make these transitions between filmmakers easier.
"Moriarty" out.

Just felt like saying that I really do enjoy the Harry Potter stories.
-
But nobody is more happy than me that kids are reading these books. I was a 'book kid' and remember with a teary eye how I became engrossed and obsessed with the world of TINTIN and ASTERIX, before moving onto Stephen King novels when I was eleven. If kids get even half the pleasure out of HARRY POTTER books as I did out of what I read when I was a kid then that just overjoys me. But the movie WAS piss-weak.
-
Shit, I wanna see this, and the pics are broken!
-
What's up with that?
-
More squares with x's in them! Marvel Posters, T3 pictures and now this! I sure do love red x's!
-
This photos are great and im impressed they managed to keep the darker style. But that wasn't the problem with the 1st movie, and won't be with the 2nd. It's that frigging Chirs Columbus! The actors in Harry Potter are world class, they just fall prey to shoddy direction. You can just picture him telling Radcliffe Watson and Grint to "Look shocked!" "Be sad!" "Wide eyes!" I just hope to god he's learnt his lesson from the first film. Dobby looks ok, kinda thought he'd look more yodaish though..oh well, just my interpretation.......
-
Perhaps BigMother was one of the few to visit the real site rather than relying on the little red crosses like most of us have.
-
Ha Ha! Let me be the first to turn this seemingly innocuous talkback into another debate about which is better, Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings!! (Cue maniacal laugh) I must admit the design for Dobby, the House Elf, looks nowhere near as cool as I'd hoped and will ultimately pale in comparison to Gollum's character design for The Two Towers! Last year it was the battle between LOTR's Cave Troll and HP's Troll in the Dungeon, and this year it will be the battle between LOTR's Gollum and HP's Dobby!Hmmm... Maybe that's not fair, after all Gollum is a cool, evil, little bastard and Dobby is a weedy House-Elf that headbutts walls to punish himself and wears a pillow-case. (Gollum is a bad guy forced by Frodo to be a good boy, and Dobby is a good little Elf forced to be bad; therein lies the dichotomy of the characters. I suppose they're opposites after all... Tune in next year for: "Which is cooler: LOTR's Eagle or HP's Hippogrif!"
-
You people are the biggest bunch of fucking crybabies I've ever seen. There's a link RIGHT THERE to go see the pictures, and yet you bitch that the links are broken. "Oh Harry, spoon feed me everything I want to know and see! I'll thank you by trashing your site and calling you fat! Waaah, Harry, waaah!" Grow up, ya fucking whiny little shits...
-
But so did the images from the first movie, the trick is still in how well the film plays on its own. The first film felt more like a highlights from the book reel than a strong translation with a life of its own. Maybe now that the introductions are out of the way Columbus will do a better job of breathing some independence into the movie(as I know all too well that SOME people won't read the books to save their lives even though they take a considerable amount of interest in the movies). I hope that guy who made "A Little Princess" gets to make the next one, he'd fit perfectly.
-
I can't see the pics either. Red x's, but no pics. Me would like to see.
-
you people are stupid. click the fucking link to the EW site if you want to see the goddamn pictures so bad.
-
Pictures look great. But I agree, the sets and photography were not the problem with the first Potter movie. Though Dobbie looks heads and tails 100% better than that horrible piece of CGI use for the Centaur in the first. Then again, the troll in the first one looked pretty cool. I guess what I'm getting as is, ehhhh, I'll reserve my judgement until I've seen the film. The Planet of the Apes looked amazing until the piece of shite was released. And that was Tim Burton. 'Way more confidence in him than a still unproven Columbus.
-
Brannagh, for those of you who read the book, will be perfect as Lockhart. I like the first movie and I think this will improve. I agree with the above statement that now that the introductions are out of the way we can get on with it. This is a good year for movies.
-
So funny man
-
OK, so it doesn't rhyme...I went to EW to look at the pictures, but bailed out at the cover page. I've already read the book, so why spoil the visuals (especially something like Dobby) for myself. I guess we'll see if I'm successful...
-
So you can repair the links after these poor bastards hosting them get AICN-dotted. Same goes for the 'Superhero posters' article. Jesus. It's web 101. Grip.
-
The first movie was........... ok, nothing more, nothing less.
-
can we get different directors? Anyone! just don't give the thrid movie to he-who-sold-his-soul-to-make-home-alone! PLEASE!!! Great books, but the film was okay as well. i'm glad they've made the characters look a little older in these pics.
-
The second book in the series is my least favorite, as it does little to advance the overall story of Potter vs. Voldemort.
Now the THIRD book, when we meet Sirius Black and Prof Lupis (sp?)...that's when it gets interesting. And how the heck are they going to cram the epic 700+ page "Goblet of Fire" into a two-hour movie?
-
I really liked "Harry Potter" and I really liked "Lord of the Rings." It did not occur to me to pick a side, as I didn't realize the movies were in some sort of competition. I loved "AOTC" and "Spider-Man" as well, and I don't pay attention to the box office results. (Who, other than the people who stand to profit, care how much a movie makes???) I thought "Memento" was groovy, and "Mulholland Drive" is a trip. Why do so many people here believe many of these movies are steaming piles of crap? AOTC is not crap. "Enough" is crap. Get a grip on yourself. Life is short, spend a couple of hours in a theater and become a kid again. It's not that hard.
-
That's because they are older, dumbass. Kids hitting puberty ARE gonna look older than they did the year before, wouldn't they?
-
Here we go again..."When I'm at my house this Thanksgiving I'll be watching Spider-Man and Attack of the Clones and (drool, drool)...LORD OF THE RINGSS!!! NOT HARRY POTTER!!!!" Then you say, "If you can't feel the magic that oozes out of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings (but definitely not Harry Potter), well...I just feel sorry for you." Trollers are the ones that deserve our pity. They're starting this crap. I don't understand how you benefit from one film being better than the other. Are you a better person for it? Let's actually get some intelligent discussion on these talkbacks, rather than "This movie blows, I'm not going to go see it." So why do you feel anybody cares whether or not you're going to see a movie? Shut up and stop trolling.
-
...but it's how they're pulled off that matters. Having seen the first film (which was pretty good), I'm pretty sure the actors (Who were uniformly excellent) can carry the whole thing off, especially with Branagh turning up. Columbus' direction wasn't as bad as it could have been, although his overuse of reaction shots to try and create a sense of awe was bloody annoying. The only major gripe (about 5 minor ones) was the lack of explanation of why Snape hates Harry so much. Yes, it doesn't matter to most of the audience who have read the book but to the rest it would be rather an annoying gap. Getting back to the pics, the statue shot suggests that the final fight will happen on the statue rather then just on the chamber floor, which should make for some good action (and it'll be interesting to see just how much of the gore stays in that scene). Dobby's design is...interesting but it'll all depend on how well the SFX team pull him off (their work in the first film fluctuated wildly from good (transfiguration) to crappy (The Troll)) and how well Daniel radcliffe and Jason Isaacs work of off him. Overall, this film should be better then the first due the lack of need to explain and introduce everyone and everything. Still has lesspotential then three and four though, especially if they do get Cuaron

Chris Columbus is a terrible DIRECTOR, but he did used to be a d
by togmeister
While watching the first HP movie, the thought did pass my mind - 'whatever happened to the guy who wrote Gremlins and Goonies'? Those movies had mischief, fun, darkness, a sense of sicko humor and characters with PERSONALITIES. Everything this by-the-book blockbuster did not.
-
I wasn't impressed. It was a cute movie, but it absolutely felt "by the book", something you couldn't really say about Gremlins and sure as hell couldn't say about Goonies.

Let me explain how many LOTR fans feel: LOTR fans have nothing against Harry Potter personally, but, (I hope I speak for mostly everyone) LOTR fans do feel a bit cheated, because of the fact that this "wonderous" boy wizard, that was undoubtedly influenced by tolkien himself, comes along and steals the heart of the media, and to a lesser extent, popular culture, while LOTR for the meantime is put on the backburner. We Tolkienites feel that LOTR isnt recieving the recognition it should be recieving, largely in part to the Harry Potter craze (why must Harry Potter be released almost exactly 1 month before LOTR for 2 consecutive years?) In short, LOTR fans have nothing against Harry Potter Books personally, (I'm sure they are great) but they feel cheated by the fact that LOTR's accomplishments are being belittled and tossed aside due to the Harry Potter craze. [NOTE: These are my own views, and while I belive that these views may be shared with other LOTR fans, I may be wrong. Please correct me if that is so.] Pretty logical rant, Huh?
-
I mean, did LOTR recieve front page-evening news-woldwide coverage of its opening, as was the case with Harry Potter? That just doesnt seem right.
-
I think Dobbie looks exactly right. I'd never quite been able to picture him from the books, but it looks perfect (complete with pillow case for clothes). He's to be voiced by an actor called Toby Jones, who I saw on stage earlier this year in The Play What I Wrote, the Kenneth Branagh-directed Morecombe and Wise show.
-
I am reminded of a quote by someone famous, I dont know who at this moment- "Ignorance is the seed of all evil." I will humbly state that I am ignorant to most Harry Potter stuff, and thus probably have no right to come here and talk about these sort of things. My primary motive in writing my previous post was to see if anyone had noticed the same observations I had noticed. Though, as morGOTH stated, Harry Potter coverage is not a bad thing, (as my post amid my feanor-like emotional ranting might have indicated), that is still an observation. Now that my emotions are calm now, I am willing to discuss the reasons for this, and why I along with many others get caught up in the useless LOTR vs. HP debate. I am ready for enlightenment, show me the way.
-
I don't want to be a troller, nor do I want to "dis" or put down anything else. If I happened to do these things, I am sorry. I have utmost respect for everyone here, and I dont want to come across as rude. I just want to contribute my thoughts, and I am open too contradictory viewpionts or comments. Thanks.
-
i think that new harry potter movie will be okay. there's some good parts in the first one like when they kill the giant troll. it wasn't as cool as the part in lord of the rings when they killed the giant troll though. them lord of the rings movies will probably all be better than the harry potter movies. cause the books are better in my opinion. both of them are better than them new star wars movies.
-
but there is some good shit in the new star wars movies when its not during the gay parts
-
I've never read Harry Potter, but, but can I just say this? Can I just say.... that "Dobby" thing scares the bejeezus out of me? I mean, look at it. "The gun made a noise, and jam came out his ears. I'm sowwy."
-
If you're still here, thank you for voicing your opinions the way you did. To tell the truth, I never actually thought about it that way. I guess people want the stories they like to get some exposure. However; LotR stopped about $7 mil short of overtaking Harry Potter's gross in the States (I think), and on less screens, and with a "demographic," if you will, less prone to repeat viewings. It was also nominated for several prestigious technical and artistic merits over the course of the winter, so I'd say that the media's Harry Potter frenzy did not really factor in to The Fellowship of the Ring's final performance. As for the accusation that Harry Potter is unimaginative and derivative of Tolkien's work (among others), I disagree. I will concede that Dumbledore (at least from the film) seems like a carbon-copy of Gandalf (see: wizened old wizard who is quirky and much more powerful than he lets on), the two films were not very similar in tone. In fact, I would go so far as to liken Rowling's world as a copy off of anything Roald Dahl than of J.R.R. Tolkien. I mean, Platform 9 3/4, Diagon Alley (get it?) & moving pictures are all pretty much very different elements than seen in The Lord of the Rings. Still, you're right that people are entitled to get these works out there, and I think Harry Potter is a much easier beast to handle as far as the press is concerned. Rest assured, J.K. Rowling is to J.R.R. Tolkien as Tolkien is to Socrates. I think it's already been firmly established that Lord of the Rings is much more powerful than Harry Potter, but people saying that Harry Potter is garbage (which it's not) isn't going to further encourage new people to see Lord of the Rings; as a matter of fact, it's probably unwise, since there's a potential for a lot of crossover appeal between these two properties. I respect what you had to day though, and you helped me realize that I've definitely been oversimplifying this issue.
**********************************P.S. to Nazg, I know you probably think I'm a loser, but if there were a case for me to make that you may enjoy reading Harry Potter, try the wordplay and the characterization: while tones in the books often seem a little shallow and redundant, the characters are very decidedly interesting and many of them continue to develop throughout the series. As for the words, there are many easy gimmicks strewn throughout the four already released novels, but some are still fairly clever; Hufflepuff, Rubeus Hagrid, and Fawkes the Phoenix (read up on your British history) are probably three of the better jokes in the series. -
I'm a pretty big Lord of the Rings fan, and I have to disagree with you on this whole deal. LOTR did great box office, and was nominated for heapin' spoonfuls of awards. It was not ignored by moviegoers, nor by reviewers, nor by the press in general. It's not as readily and immediately accessible as Harry Potter, so it wasn't quite as financially successful. No big deal. I mean, what more could you have wanted for the film? I would think it would be enough that the film was as good as it was. LOTR:FOTR was great, and we should all just be thankful for the movie we got, not complain that some other movie was more successful. I'm more worried that they're replacing the cast for Prisoner of Azkaban. I'm not happy about that at all. Stick with the original cast or don't make the following films; that's what I think.
-
I like the books... but not Dobby. In the current issue of EW, Chris Columbus says "don't worry, he's nothing like Jarjar!" Yeah right.. in my opinion- he's exactly like JarJar!
-
Youre right, LOTR did get what it deserved. It must be a local thing. I live in a small midwest town, and where I live it was like "LOTR what? What is that?" Anyway, why am I discussing LOTR?
This is a Harry Potter talkback. I really am curious about the Harry Potter Books, and I might read them sometime soon. I am also curious about what Harrr Potter fans thought of the movie's media and promo tie-ins (I was abhorred when I saw a burger king commercial advertising LOTR goblets, it was a disgrace.) Also, what do you expect is in store for the next movie in regards to hype, etc? [Sidenote: In my town, they actually BANNED Harry Potter Books, due to the whole evil magic whitchcraft thing! Thus my difficulty in exposing myself to the Harry Potter books.] -
So Harry Lard-hame thinks he has found the lost king of popcorn?
It matters not, the reign of Harry Potter shall fall. -
Are you in the U.S. or in another country (England, perhaps)? If it's the U.S., feel free to walk into the police department with all four Harry Potter books and tell them to piss on their ban. Little thing called the First Amendment makes that ban about as legal as a killing spree.
-
I agree! Those Burger King Frodo goblets made me cringe every time I saw them. JRRT must have been spinning in his grave. One stipulation JK Rowling (author of HP) had at the beginning was NO HAPPY MEALS, God bless her. She also required Coca Cola to sponser a reading program in order to be the official drink of Harry Potter. HP, being the mega-phenomenon it is, was going to get media hyped and merchandised. JKR couldn't avoid this. She did manage to put some limits on it, though. ******** Of course, I highly recommend the HP books. (Amazon would be happy to deliver, you know.) I think they're all in the affordable paperbacks now. The plots have all the complexities of a good mystery, the characters are wonderfully diverse and three-dimensional, there is an underlying wry sense of humor (ala Roald Dahl or Monty Python, even) and it treats kids with respect, not sugar coating. ******* Lastly, HP & LOTR should be able to walk happily hand in hand down fantasy book lane. I read LotR to curb my craving for the next HP book. That's how it works and vice versa. As Martha says, It's a good thing!
-
That ban holds no legal weight at all. My main problem though is even obtaining a book. I would like to check it out at the library first, but as of now Im having trouble finding it. Anyway, the main reason I fussed about the media exposure in my earlier posts is that I want new people to hear about the movies from the media, and go out, and start reading the books, and thus, introduce themselves to a whole new world! I guess I can't really blame HP, because it needs media exposure too. It works the same way with HP too, people hear about it, see the movie, and introduce themselves to the books. And that's good, for both to do well. Don't you like to hear someone tell you about how they just started reading the books, thanks to the movies! Do you not almost feel envy for them, because they get a chance to read it for the first time, and you'll never be able to do that? I do. Thats why it makes me happy to see the movies get attention, because I know a bunch of people are going out, and picking up the books for the first time, and thinking WOW! And I also guess that things are looking better now for LOTR, and its getting more attention now, so I don't have too much to gripe about.
-
i rented HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE the other night and saw if for the first time. i must say i enjoyed the little bugger. it was dumb fun and although i haven't read the books it appeared to have been a pretty faithful adaption. i don't know what the fuss is about as far as direction is concerned...it looked fine to me. its a kid's movie...these are kids acting...all you can expect is for them to "look sad" and junk like that. i saw no reason for the film(s) to ever be boycotted. i mean jeez...its sci-fi. i'm looking foward to Chamber of Secrets and the pics make the movie look like it will be darker...cool. i might even go see this one in theatres. as for the Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings debate...what debate? all of little harry's magic couldn't stop the arrorws of Legalos or the (dare i say this b/c of elijah wood) courage of Frodo. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING was a fantastic film that was in my opinion the best of last year. however...stryder, frodo, legalos, the troll guy, the dead dude from GOLDENEYE, all the elfs and even that evil armored dude couldn't stand against anakin skywalker. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are great and all...but they're no Star Wars.
