Gorgeous GANGS OF NEW YORK Posters!!! These are beautiful!!!

Published at:  May 21, 2002 1:53:46 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... The twenty minutes of footage from GANGS OF NEW YORK was shown at Cannes yesterday and it apparently BLEW PEOPLE COMPLETELY AWAY!!! I'm dying to hear about it. More than that, I'm shakingly anxious to see it for myself. I wonder if Miramax is going to follow through like NEW LINE did and show this footage to all domestic press all over the United States!!! (greedily rubbing hands together with this self-serving pointing out that this is what New Line did... they didn't just show it once, they showed it to every movie person everywhere! But really just wanting to see it for himself!!! hehehehe) Well, I'm hoping that we get a lot of reports on these, as well as seeing it for ourselves!!!!

Second...I'd like to thank the Academy. I thought the trailers looked a bit stilted, with the exception of Daniel Day Lewis. He's clearly going to be the Osiris of this bad boy...looking forward to it.

Domi'sInnerChild.....// What The Hell Does 'Box Office

    by ericalan69

Um, not that I'm a screaming Leo fanboy (though he was great in 'Basketball Diaries' and 'W.E.G.G.?'), but how is Leo possibly box office poison? He's been in two films since 'Titanic' (you may have heard of that one.... I think it made back it's investment, at least), 'The Man In The Iron Mask' (which made over $100 million, world b.o. included) and Woody Allen's 'Celebrity' (which made decent bank for a Woody Allen movie). 'Don's Plum' doesn't count (because of it's original release dates, and the lawsuit by Tobey and Leo), so that leaves: 'The Beach?' It broke even, but should never have been marketed as a teen-girl friendly LeoPic. So, basically, that's one film that didn't SuperPerform, and now he's box office poison? What the hell is that about? // e.

For instance Cameron Diaz' probably represents greed (green=money) b/c she's a pick pocket in the movie. The others I'm not too sure about, but those posters are great, all three of them.

Am I the only one who still thinks Leo is a decent actor?

    by hung-wei lo

Sure, it's easy to make fun of a guy after The Beach (never saw it) bombed. And especially when the lovey-dovey Titanic killed Star Wars in the box office (I'm sure that's where most of the backlash comes from). But he's not as bad as some of you say. You want bad? Try Freddie Prinze Jr. Personally, I thought Leo was pretty darn good in Gilbert Grape and Quick & The Dead. He's not awe-inspiringly good, but he's certainly not bottom of the barrel. Some people feel the need to bash just to show how big their balls are on the internet. That's just sad. Very sad.

    DiCaprio is in INDY 4!

    by still_jackson

Gangs of NY is going to be the movie of the year - hands down. Sucks to be Peter Jackson because he's going to lose the Oscar AGAIN to Scorcese. And look for Cameron Diaz to get the nomination she was robbed of for her work in Vanilla Sky. As for Day Lewis, well this guy is so brilliant and fascinating that his own life story would make one helluva movie.
P.S. DiCaprio in Indy? Hey, at least I made you read my post, sucker.

    by ricardoluv

They look like they are from 2002, not 1892.

Why is this movie named Gangs of new York? Any body ever read the book? It's about like 400 different gangsters. How can you just pick out one to make a movie. The movie should be called like Gangs of New York Pages 32-34.

These life long projects always turn out to be shit (Avalon anybody?).

    You can bet my ass...

    by fd resurrected

...on gettin' my paws on these gorgeous posters (except DDL lazy right eye - what the hell?) to decorate my wall. I've read the book, I've read the 1993 draft scrift, I've read the articles in New York Times and Entertainment Weekly. I am still eagerly awaiting for the film to roll out in big-ass DTS-equipped screenings late this year, considering Scorsese's strength as a star movie director (I loved Taxi Driver and underrated The King of Comedy, liked Raging Bull and Goodfellas, others I haven't seen or didn't like e.g. excessively overproduced Cape Fear re-make) and Leonardo DiCaprio and DDL's star-making turns. GONY could very well be the Titanic of R-rated movies at the box office, earning the shitloads of cash equal to that of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (adjusted in gross) and Saving Private Ryan. Here's hoping this don't bomb, 'cause it looks too exciting, too interesting and too promising to FAIL at the box office reception unlike Heaven's Gate fiasco.

Pix Won't Load, Plus Indy Gets A Son, I Shit You Not!

    by son of batboy

WTF? Site Suspended Due To Excessive Bandwidth? Shit, doesn't anything work right around this place? Damnit. Coming Attractions has a blurb from a Dutch TV magazine called Vara with George Lucas saying "Spielberg is directing, and Indiana will have a son." Someone get on this right away and please for the love of God tell me this is complete Bullshit! They had to go add a son. Shit as if ShortRound wasn't fucking annoying enough. Fans, if this is true and they're adding some Haley Joel Osment clone, this will be the JarJar of Indy4. God Help Us All!

Looks like your figures are off unless you're thinking international. Iron Mask made $57 million and the Beach $40 Million (those are the only two I consider Leo Vehicles). Considering advertising usually nearly doubles a film's budget, it's more like the Man in the Iron Mask broke even (even riding the teenie booper Leo tidal wave) and the Beach bombed.

Box office poison? Cameron Diaz without makeup ugly?

    by the_greggins

Okay, lets think for just a minute. Leonardo DiCaprio isn't exactly a slouch in the acting industry. By an unfortunate turn of events he was rated as a "here today - gone tomorrow" kind of actor by the raging hormones of the world. This in no way means that he is a bad actor.
And lets talk about the Cameron Diaz thing for just a second. A close up without heavy makeup a scary thing? Give me a break. I'm not in any way saying I'm a fan of her acting (not one) but I admit that most people of the world could not attempt to make themselves good enough for a close up this close. So can we cool it in that area? Just a brief defense.

    The Gangs of OK Corral

    by tequilaworm

Let's all try to remain calm and avoid hyping this film to the stratosphere, 'cos we might have another Kundun in our hands here (ie. life long ambition from spoilt director). Don't get me wrong, Scorsese is quality, it's just that it would be too easy for him to become John Carpenter, who has made more crap than good. That and some photos of this I have seen looked like a Tombstone remake!!

    DD's Eye

    by tony oscar

DD's eye looks fucked up because it's got the design of a US coin's tail side on it. Yeah, there's a US Mint version of a bald eagle on his eye. I know this because I've seen the actual poster, not just an online picture. It's very interesting that DD has it on his eye (I assume it's because his eyes are gray, and therefore, would be the most natural to make that type of reflection appear). Leo's looks good, too, but there's no little quirk in it, which kinda sucks. It might be the same with Cameron's, but it hasn't been put up yet.

The greatness of working in a movie theater.
