Sweeps Day 26: HERC's Seen The BOSTON_PUBLIC Finale!!

Published at:  May 20, 2002 2:38:20 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Boston Public 2.22 FAQ

What’s it called?

“Chapter Forty-Four.”

Who’s responsible?

Teleplay credited to series creator David E. Kelley.

What does TV Guide say?

“Harry Senate (Nicky Katt) fights for his life in the second-season finale. It's Ronnie (Jeri Ryan) who finds the teacher bloody and unconscious in his classroom after the attacker passes her on his way out. Following surgery, Senate's condition is listed as critical, and Harper (Chi McBride) keeps a vigil at his ICU bedside – leaving Guber (Anthony Heald) to run things, in exemplary fashion, at Winslow High. Meanwhile, Ronnie demands information from the incarcerated Jamaal (Edwin Hodge) about where to find his brother Amaad, whom she has identified as Senate's assailant. But that ID is challenged in a court hearing. Det. Danby: Jody Wood.”

What is TV Guide not telling us?

This is the season finale Kelley got right this year.

The big surprise?

Lauren Davis does something that will cause the jaw of many a first-season fan to drop.

Lauren Davis is still on the show?

She hasn't had a lot to do this year, but it was worth the wait.

Will Nikky Katt be back for the third season?

Don’t be surprised when Harry flatlines.

Any sign of Mandy Patinkin?

Ha! You wish!

Was I dreaming, or was John Larroquette on "The Practice" last night?

This - this is not a "Boston Public" question!!

What’s good?

Harper really falls apart. Guber really rises to the occasion. Lipschultz is really funny. Lauren makes the episode a don’t-miss. So don’t miss it.

What’s not so good?

Why is Jerri Ryan’s character in love with Harry Senate all of the sudden? Is she just jealous that Harry’s been dating former student Dana Poole?

How does it end, spoiler-boy?

Ronnie kisses the man who brought her to Boston Public.

Great movie with Nicky Katt in it:

Suburbia. I really enjoyed that film quite a bit. I think it was the first time I ever saw Giovanni Ribisi act, and I was quite impressed. Katt was also in a movie called The Way of the Gun, although he didn't have a whole lot to do. Imagine me seeing a movie with Juliette Lewis in it intentionally

C'mon, did anybody really expect Katt to stay on this show.

    by village idiot

I swear, there was a distinct "John Travolta waiting for his contract to run out on Welcome Back Kotter" vibe coming from the guy. Actually, more of a "Ned Beatty waiting for his contract to run out on Homicide" vibe. Or even a "Mandy Patinkin waiting for his contract to run out on Chicago Hope" vibe, a very appropos comparison. I would like to say that Katt's vibe is NOT the same as "Paul Sorvino waiting for his contract to run out on Law and Order," which was much more subtle and unexpected.

You know, I'm a little offended that you choose to speak of

    by munchinsonton

We Boston Public fans don't need you anymore, Herc. You sold us out all season with NO REVIEWS. Keep watching that Buffy and Angel crap. And looks like Harry lives, so screw the flatline statement.

    The Prosecutor

    by hardyboy

Did anybody notice the woman who played the prosecutor? Thin and willowy, straight blonde hair, big eyes. . .sheesh, I'm beginning to think David E. Kelley is producing women like this in a factory! But anyway. . .it was an OK season ender, if typically David E. Kelleyian--I guess if a major character hadn't been stabbed, he would have been shot, blown up in a car, or spontaneously combusted. C'mon, DEK, get some new ideas! The only suspense here was waiting to see if Harry would die or come out of it, and since I hadn't heard that Nicky Katt cancelled his contract, I wasn't in too much suspense. As for why Ronnie is suddenly "in love" with Harry--well, she did say a couple of weeks ago that she had been "putting herself out there" for Harry, so this wasn't too much of a surprise; but Lauren and Guber. . .my Lord! ***Now, for BP's sophomore season--this was really a hit-or-miss season, and there were far more misses than hits. I'll say this, though; the quality of the series dramatically went up once Kathy Baker stopped appearing every week. Her grotesque character--and her weird son--were the most distasteful elements of the show this year. If Baker doesn't show up at all next year, we may have something.

Ok, Mistakes Were Made (by me).

    by village idiot

It looks like my "Katt is leaving the show" vibe was all wrong. I'm sorry, I felt it, I make no apologies. But does this now mean we get to look forward to a difficult recovery, ala Carter on ER or Alan Arkin on Chicago Hope, and Bradley Whitfield on West Wing?

Or the greatest "recovery" of all time

    by mulengro

Andre Braugher's Pembleton recovering from his stroke on Homicide. Great actor, great character, great show. Boston Public isn't bad either, but that's mostly due to the solid cast.

So what happened, besides Harry hooking up w/ the crazy bug-eyed teacher? (not to be one who nitpicks about women's looks, but something about Jeri Ryan really bothers me)
