Lucas needs to vacate the director's chair. And fast.
-
It could be the best film of the year, and it could be the biggest disaster. Scorsese hasn't hit a home run in over a decade, so I'm keeping my anticipation in check.
-
Everytime I see that thing, I just have to weep because I'm in awe of that chick's ability to look distressed. She should get an oscar immediately. What an actress.

I'd rather have George Lucas direct his own material than hire a guy who makes really long and boring movies (Kundun, Age of innocence)and continues to explore redundant subject matter. How many more Mafia movies do we need? The Godfather 1/2 were supposed to be so superior that they would give closure to the genre. Gangs of New York:4 hour Yawn fest...
-
Looks good, but I'm still unsure, since (as said above) Martin hasn't really done much of note in such a long time. Hopefully he comes back in full force with this one.

I was pretty doubtful about this flick until I saw the trailer. Lawdamighty it looks good.

Maybe they'll digitally edit out the Brazilian Beast Diaz. I just don't get her.

I love it. A beautiful trailer and my gosh, could they make us wait any longer?! Argh! I'm seriously looking forward to the reaction at Cannes on May 20. I know they'll only get 20 minutes, but 20 minutes of loveliness can still translate. I cannot wait. Martin is a master and my gosh, "Age of Innocence" -- I loved that film. I too cannot believe that such things are being posted about Martin. But look at the "disappointments" that are credited to him. For any other director, they would be triumphs and so, it just emphasizes how hight Martin has set the bar for himself and our expectations. "Gangs" looks wonderful.

Over a decade? Have you seen Bringing Out the Dead? I consider it to be one of Marty's (I can call him that cause I got him so much coke back in the day when he was living with what's-his-face)most home-run-resembling films since Goodfellas. I love Robert DeNiro, but just couldn't endure the Cape Fear remake, (most likely due to the bowel-churning performance of Juliette "Maybe I can get a job working with whoever produces Melissa Etheridge's music videos" (By the time I'd finished the part in quotes I'd almost forgotten her last name)...Lewis? Juliette Lewis?) Wow, those parentheticals get confusing. Anyway, Bringing Out the Dead is AWESOME! And Nicolas Cage acts in it too, which is always a nice treat. Actually, it's probably one of his best performances. But maybe you meant home run in terms of making money, which I doubt it did. Great soundtrack too... Also starring Tom Sizemore, John Goodman, Ving Rhames, and Patricia Arquette. Everyone is at the top of their gig, with killer chops. Li'l Patty Arquette isn't too bad either.
-
Specifically, I hope he inflicted a gaping wound in Harv's big gut, then patched it up just to patronise HW. 'I am life and death to you big guy!'.
-
is this the WARRIORS remake everybody was bitchin about?
-
...when he made Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. He showed true brilliance. Goodfellas is also a good film, but not on the same level as his earlier work. Casino was a painful rehash of the worst bits of Scorsese's previous films...it was almost like self-parody. Still, it was a decent watch. Does anyone remember that list of the best Vegas movies, and 3000 Miles to Graceland was near the top above Casino and a bunch of other flicks? Man, that was one of the funniest Talkbacks ever. Oh, anyways, I have high hopes for Gangs of New York. Screw Spiderman. As if those two movies have anything to do with each other.

"The 90's Showed Little Promise For Scorsese"? That's L
by the feral kid
Alright, the 70s and 80s were Scorsese's best years but he is still putting out amazing content. Oh, for the "that movie was so boring," I bet "Fight Club" is your favourite film ever and even though you've only see "Clockwork Orange" once on HBO, you're an expert on Kubrick. IF you can't appreciate what Scorsese did on "Age of Innocence" with the "moving dialouge camera" or the color palate, crap. That movie was beautiful and if you are looking for the right thing, that movie is exciting as hell. Same thing with Altman's "Gosford Park" or really any of his movies. Both are master craftsmen. All of Scorsese's films are different, plumbing different ideas. "Kundun" expressed spirituality and themes of immortality, of the circle of things, through images and maybe it was done by an outsider, but that is one amazing film of discovery. Images is all Fincher has to offer but he has nothing else in his portfolio to weigh this against. And "Kundun" is much more visually amazing than anything that Fincher ever did. Also one of the view directors who is great with music, next to Crowe and Hitchcock, and Crowe is just a good story teller. And Scorsese doesn't make "MOB" movies. "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas," "Afterhours,""Mean Streets" and "Casino" all dealt with the Mafia but they weren't about them. "Goodfellas" is similar in it's treatment to the Mafia as is "Sunset Blvd." to Hollywood - Hollywood and the Mafia in these films are "the stuff that dreams are made of" and just as Sam Spade found out, dreams are made out of lead. And I didn't like "Casino" at first but as I kept watching, the acting grabbed me and I understood the monotomy and the brutality of the violence. Every thing is on a horizontal plane, it all ends the same as it began. Our hopes and dreams only further our approach to the end fo the road. Just like Nicky, he don't know we're in the Black Book till we are in it. And "Bringing out the Dead" is a very interesting film that I've only see around five or six times and that was a long time ago, more time is needed. Maybe boring is a good thing. Fuck you short attention spanners, you never will be "film geeks," just Ridelin addicts (or however it is spelled).
-
Am I the only one that can't get the page -- or cinemovies.fr for that matter -- to load?! I havea dsl line. What's the dealio. Very, very frustrating !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Or film geeks, really. Most of you "Talkbackers" are pretty much sci-fi action or superhero fans (but only if the picture in question was either released when you were younger and less cynical -- like "Empire" -- or were totally unheralded and therefore impervious to unrealistic expectations -- like "The Matrix.") Why am I not surprised that you're all dismissing Scorsese's 90's output? You people are so hype-sensitive -- and so internet-empowered -- that you have no sense of a movie's actual worth. You don't like your place in life, or your sexuality is confused, so nothing pleases you. Scorsese's 90's output was fabulous: His "Cape Fear" remake is a blast (and what idiot thinks Juliette Lewis was not good in that? She was sensational!); "Casino" only pales in comparison next to "Goodfellas," but stands incredibly tall on it's own as a Vegas picture; "Bringing Out The Dead" is a fine little punk picture from the "After Hours" days; and, most importantly, "The Age Of Innocence" is the man's masterpiece and, along with Terrence Malick's "The Thin Red Line," one of the 90's finest films. But, unfortunately, there are no guns or sunglasses, so most Talkbackers have no capacity to grasp it. It's nothing to get upset over, friends. I don't think anything has ever been said of any real importance on one of these boards, and I for one wish Harry would just get rid of them so that the majority of these cockroaches would just scurry back under the fridge.
-
Goodfellas came out in 1990, so it too is a good'un from the '90's, technically.

those films are THE SHIT! -
I take that the poster who said Scorcese hasn't "hit a home run" in a while is talking box office figures as opposed to brilliant shining examples of filmmaking at it's best. Kundun and Bringing out the Dead were both fantastic films, and now that Scorcese's back to his familiar stomping ground of New York gangsters in a four hour epic, there's no way this is going to suck. Eventually Harvey Scissorhands will realise that DeCaprio and Cameron Diaz's names will draw enough audience figures to make a profit. How much did this film cost to make anyway? Surely it's a fraction of Star Wars or Titanic? Well, no matter what I say some people will always prefer simplisticly insulting CG movies seemingly written by 10 year olds to one's which involve actual thinking...For the record I thought Spiderman was really cool, will probably watch Clones, thought that Collateral Damage was the most painful moviegoing experience I've had in years and think that the best film I've seen at the cinema recently was The Others last week (currently no. 2 in Japan)

Come on people, talkbacks do not exist simply to bash whoever or whatever the topic is. I mean you're bitching about Martin FRICKING Scorsese, for pity's sake! And then these other guys going on about Cameron Diaz- come on, like you wouldn't want your spooge in her hair. You guys are nutzoid. Let's all leave Scorsese alone and get back to complaining about things that deserve to be complained about, like the weak script for Spiderman, or the weak script for Episode 2, or whatever. When I asked wise and venerable Jedi Master Mace Windu about this talkback, he could only respond: "This party's over!"
-
I adore my Taxi Driver and Raging Bull DVDs. I think Goodfellas is great. I'm just not crazy about Casino, that's all. Peter Jackson has made two movies that are better than Scorsese's weakest work, and those two movies are Heavenly Creatures and The Fellowship of the Ring. I won't pretend to pit those movies against Scorsese's stronger work, and I'm definitely not going to try to defend Sam Raimi.
-
...that if I were a homosexual, I would love Martin Scorsese. But since I'm straight, I'll just say that I like his movies a whole heck of a lot. OK, now that I've dealt with the sexual confusion issue, I'd also like to say that it's alright to not like Casino. Really, it's not a film fan crime. At least, it shouldn't be.
-
Oh wait, no one was talking to me anyways. How embarassing. Cue Jake La Motta in front of mirror scene.
-
Oh, I sit patiently watching my HSX stock in this movie fall, then rise slightly and fall again. In the end it'll be a masterpiece and I'll smile.
-
Just wanted to add that, yes, I think Jar Jar Diaz still sucks, but Martin IS a fantastic director. A class act, IMHO.
-
Whoa (said just like Keanu Reeves), I mustve missed this one b/c I definitely thought he had agreat run in the 90's. If you notice, the first film he does of the decade is usually his best. "Raging Bull" in the 80's, "GoodFellas" in the 90's and most likely "Gangs of New York" of the 2000's (?). I cannot wait for this film, and I too would ditch seeing "Episode II" in a minute to see an early screening of "GONY."
"Collateral Damage" was one of the worst movies I saw in 2002, but "Queen of the Damned" takes the prize as the worst film of 2002 (and I even saw "All About the Benjamins").This of course could change with such movies as "Reign of Fire," "XXX," and anything Bruckheimer has coming out. -
For all the anticipation for the BIG movies this year (Spider-man, Star Wars, Two Towers, and, jeez, what happened to Harry Potter?--it came out, made a ton of money, and was scarcely mentioned on this site again), there are actually only three movies coming out this year that will matter (well, besides the rare movie by a newcomer that comes out of the blue and bashes us in the side of the head with its brilliance, like "Y Tum Mama Tambien", which was not made by a newcomer, but it was the first film by Cuaron that mattered). I digress. Those three films are Spike Jonze's and Charlie Kaufman's "Adaptation", P.T. Anderson's "Punch Drunk Love", and Scorsese's "Gangs of New York". These are the only three films I know of that are being made by true masters at the tops of their game. I wish I could add "Minority Report" to that list, but Spielberg hasn't been at the top of his game since "Schindler's List", and, before that, he hadn't had a true masterpiece--in my opinion, of course--since "E.T." I guarantee you, twenty years from now, when they're looking back at the best films of this decade and this year, those three films ( plus "Y Tu Mama Tambien") will be the ones mentioned, though an indignant geek will say, "You're forgetting that Episode 2 came out in ought-two" before being laughed out of the room.
-
By the way, it isn't the new trailer, but this site has the trailer that has been out forever, and is definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it (I watch it about once a week, it's so damn beautiful, and, after watching it, I do a full-body shiver of anticipation). And, hey, since I wrote about it in my last post, when are we going to see a trailer for "Adaptation", or at the very least, a release date? http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/gangs_of_new_york/
-
Fortunately somebody decided to show mercy to the Japanese cinema audience and Queen of the Dammed doesn't seem to be coming to a screen anywhere near us any time soon. We do have The Scorpion King to 'look forward' to though.
-
I just hope that Adaptation doesn't play out like an Americanized 8 1/2. And The Two Towers does matter...this Lord of the Rings film series is a fantastically imaginative adventure being executed by artisans who are indeed playing at the top of their game, using probably the greatest epic written in the English language to fashion films that show the incredible vision and talent of people like Peter Jackson, Howard Shore, Andrew Lesnie, Grant Major, and Richard Taylor. Jackson displays an artistic sensibility weaned on Kurosawa and vintage Spielberg while at the same time creating his own unique style. The Two Towers matters in the same way that Close Encounters of the Third Kind mattered, in the same way that The Hidden Fortress mattered. Sure, it may not be surreal post-modern comedy. Sure, it may not be naturalistic drama. But it does bloody matter.
OK, I love Jonze, PTA, and Scorsese. And Peter Jackson is worthy of love, too. -
I had a tough time not putting that on my list. What it came down to is that I do not love "Fellowship" the way I love the previous films of the filmmakers I mentioned. I though it was great, saw it four times, but it was not a masterpiece, and, in two decades, I don't think it will be viewed the way we view "Close Encounters". I have nothing against genre films, I love them, I'm not an elitist; it's just that I haven't come across what I'd call a genre masterpiece since, well, what, "Road Warrior"? (I was going to say "Beyond Thunderdome", but its been a while since I've seen that one, and I may be wrong about it). Oh, well, there's "The Blair Witch Project", but that's a whole new can of worms I'd rather not open here. If there are any other genre masterpieces I'm forgetting, please suggest a few (I keep thinking "Dark City", but it's too early for me to tell on that one). But then, I didn't mean to start a debate about "The Two Towers" (God, I hope it does blow me away... and, on that subject, we might get a new genre masterpiece with "Ender's Game" or "Childhood's End" or "Rendezvous With Rama"), I simply meant to suggest that maybe our energies are projected in the wrong place. While people can't stop talking about "Star Wars" or "Spider-man", Scorsese can't get his version of his twenty-year dream project into theaters.
-
Thanks for elucidating, Gristle. I can totally respect that perspective. As far as genre masterpieces go, what about Raiders of the Lost Ark?
-
"Raiders" came out before "Road Warrior", so I did not list it. I thought of a couple more though: "Terminator" and "T2".
-
Hey, every filmmaker makes a couple of bombs, its just that most of them don't make a few masterpieces first. Those who are anticipating GoNY as Marty's return to glory will no doubt be exceedingly happy when it triumphs, and I'm glad for you - just don't be so blinded by your love for the man's work to be able to take some legitimate criticism. Scorsese has made some very average films, and most of them have been of late, so don't be so quick to poo-poo the respectful Marty detractors who may not see things through Scorsese-colored glasses.
-
I thought Road Warrior came out in April and Raiders came out in June or July or something like that. Well, whatever. What about Blade Runner? Okay, I don't like the original version, but I think I would dare to call the Director's Cut a masterpiece. Certainly Ridley Scott's magnum opus so far. Even so, the original came out in 1982, and that's only a year later than Road Warrior anyways. Though, with your mention of Terminator, I remember a notable genre film coming out in 1986: ALIENS.
-
The site itself still won't come up. Is this thing downloadiable (quicktime) if someone has it could they e-mail me or post it up somewhere and let us know the addy. Thanks in advance. : )
-
For some reason, my brain froze and I was thinking "Road Warrior" came out in 1982, so you were right about "Raiders", and "Blade Runner". And, yes, "Aliens", and, gosh, can I call the "The Abyss" director's cut a masterpiece? Anyway, here I go talking about genre films when the subject is Scorsese!
-
I just checked the IMDb because I was sure it came out in 1982, and, guess what, they list the U.S. release date as August 20th, 1982. What a relief. All my "well, it's certainly a good year for genre films, but it's no 1982..." rants are still credible. (This rant also works with 1989 and 1999.)
-
I found a big-ass quicktime version listed over at www.empiremovies.com/trailers.shtml
it redirects to the apple site, which oddly enough doesn''t list it on the trailers page. never the less there it is. This trailer is VERY similar to the older one with a few added shots and "this christmas" at the end. I'm still on the fence cause some of the photography in this looks very flat and TV movie.... however other parts look like they have a lot of potential when viewed in context. -

Can't see the trailer, but I read the script and I thought it was great. In fact after I finished the script "Gangs" shot to the top of my must see behind only "two Towers". I'm sure it's been revised but the characters matched down to the minor roles on the IMDB. The fight scenes are brutal, the final battle scene should be a wonder, and the setting and descriptions depict a world never really seen before.
Could easily be one of the best films of the year. -
Fuck him up his stupid ass! I wish this movie also starred Juliette Lewis so I would absolutely for sure not want to see this film. However, ther rest of the cast looks pretty good, so I'll check it out. Is Leo supposed to be Irish in this? You know, I wasn't sad at the end of Titanic, because I really wasn't sorry to see him die. By the way, I hate Leo.
