    looked fine to me

    by silvio dante

Atlantis and this one have at least made me interested in what The Mouse Factory? has to offer - no cuddly animals, just straightforward action-adventure. The first shot of the trailer got me thinking about Ankh-Morpork. After seeing the effects of AOTC, I think it's safe to say that it's time for Discworld - The Motion picture. The technology exists and all things "fantasy" are hot property after Potter and LOTR. And comedies are always popular. C'mon, tinseltown - I dare ya.

Maybe it looks "cartoonish" since it's a cartoon. Sheesh. Looks boring anyway

    Swords of the Swashbucklers

    by dr.zeus

I think Mantlo and Guice already covered this territory in Marvel/Epic comics Swords of the Swashbucklers. And they also did a better job from the looks of this extreme sky boarding fiasco.

    Temp track

    by akambe

The music on this trailer is from "Far and Away"--do they _usually_ use temp tracks for movie trailers? Forgive my ignorance, this is a serious question.

    by rev_skarekroe

Why would you build spacecraft that look like clipper ships? What's with the ponytail? What does he think he is, some kinda Jedi? Do I have any right to bitch? I never saw Atlantis. Hell, I never saw Shrek, Monsters Inc., or Ice Age. In answer to the serious question, yes they usually use old music for trailers. sk

    by priestyoungblood

I'm pretty sure he was joking about the cartoonish part- get it? It's called sarcasm. This looks pretty generic, after Titan A.E., Atlantis, etc - gimme something new.

    star wars rip off

    by plasmaorb

This open sequence looked like one of the establishing shots from star wars on tatoonie.

Along with all the ships going by on the planet coriscant.

Just looks like they are trying to meld a old idea with a good one and making a really bad idea.

Disney blows as it is... cant believe people actually pay money for this tripe.

    I have Seen It

    by father merrin

I have seen Treasure Planet, and I did not work on it. It is fantastic, it does not fall apart in the third act. It is miles above Atlantis. Between "Lilo" and this movie, the Mouse House has an amazing double-whammy.

  • Good grief, I thought that trailer was beautiful, and people are acting all "I'm too cool for that." I hope Disney doesn't think it still needs to please teens and young college students, because Disney became the antithesis of that generation's idea of cool a while ago. I like this trailer, I like what I'm seeing of the style at any rate. The opening with the moon had me thinking I'd misheard all these years and it was a Dreamworks film--or even anime. Needless to say, I'm impressed. I hope the actual movie has this kind of energy to it. And I hope the third act problems chuckrussel mentions, if they indeed exist, are fixed over the summer. ***** I've wanted US animation to break out of the crapper for a while now, but first it needs to regain the prestige it had back in the early '90s. For that, I think they need to remember that families are not the super liberal give-us-PC-grannola-crunching-fluff morons they've been marketing to ever since Pocahontas. We can take a little adventure and suspense, so long as you have endearing characters and situations--something that really has been lacking from Disney films. I think half the problem is that the beancounters want to maximize the potential audience, which makes it very hard to figure out how to approach any given concept. A movie that appeals to a teenager and one that appeals to his/her parents who also have a seven-year-old are two very different movies. The commercial/marketing side of the industry has ruined too many efforts by Disney, and that's a balance that must be fixed pronto. Give the animators more power. This is STORYTELLING, not stuff-selling. Don't go after the bitter and cynical youth market who are either cahtting about Britney or playing the latest X-box blood-squirting whatever. That audience will find its way back when they have families of their own. In the meantime, get back to the heart, charm, and downright enjoyment of the medium. Some day there will be a Star Wars of animation that'll cross all the boundaries and families, young adults, kids, and teens will love it. But until then, make stuff that actually entertains the family. Pixar's been doing it to excess, why Disney can't follow suit...

Intresting concept, nice effects, but unfortunately bears a striking resemblance (in the trailer at least) to: Reboot (the ships, the mechanical eye, the cityscape, the space travel, the cyber sails, the huge white manta-rays), Star Wars: Episode One: (the canyon racing) and Sky Diving on Espn.

  • "One Last Prediction
One of the next Disney feature animations, tentatively scheduled for 2002, is Treasure Planet, a retelling of the pirate story Treasure Island set in space with a spaceship that looks like a classic 18th century sailing ship. How soon do you think it will be before we start hearing these same anime fans screaming and getting all bent out of shape about how Disney is stealing from Captain Harlock? ^_^

I think not. Futurama has better animation than this anyway. This movies kisses Bender's shiny metal ass.

    Futurama Rip Off!

    by damitol

SARCASM! Actually, Futurama did have space pirates recently in similar ships flying the three eyed skull and crossbones. The joke was that the Captain also had three eyes, with two of them sporting patches. The visuals look great, but I have yet to get excited about this one for some reason. Maybe it's because it's essentially a high concept re-telling of a classic story, or maybe it's because Atlantis was OK, but didn't rock my world like I'd hoped it would. This one is dead center of the "maybe" list untill we get closer and more news/trainers start to appear.
