Test Screening look at UNDERCOVER BROTHER!

Published at:  May 10, 2002 5:47:09 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I love the trailer for UNDERCOVER BROTHER. I feel the trailer for UNDERCOVER BROTHER is 9 to 20 times funnier than any of the trailers thus far for AUSTIN POWERS 3. In fact, that isn't accurate, because there isn't a single laugh in any of the AUSTIN POWERS trailers thus far, and the UNDERCOVER BROTHER trailer has laughs throughout. Now the first look at answering the question of whether or not all the funny gags in the film have been sandwiched into the trailer for UNDERCOVER BROTHER and that the film is stretched an hour and a half out of that material and drags like hell... or not. And it looks like the film works, even the animatronic escaped creation from Henson codenamed Denise Richards apparently is not terrible. I really can't believe that yet. But here ya go....

Ok Harry,

Long time reader, first time contributor. I have noticed that there is surprisingly little info on the upcoming Eddie Griffin movie, Undercover Brother. I just came from the Hollywood Galaxy 6 theater where I was party to my first test screening. Without further nonsense, lets get into it.

Well, lemme start by saying, I HATE DENISE RICHARDS...... I do not think she should be allowed to pollute such fine franchises as the Bond series and furthermore, I would be able to die a happy man knowing that she's not allowed to destroy the credibility of another movie even if said movie is not going for "credible". As it is not a perfect world, I guess we can't always get what we want. I will say however, that she does NOT (holy crap am I actually saying this!?!?) ruin this movie, I will go further in saying that she (GOD NO!!! STOP TALKING) actually fit the part she played in this movie perfectly. OK OK OK, enough of my Denise Richards rant.....

I will make this quick as it is fairly late for my pathetic 50 year old in a 24 year old's body. We all know the story, Eddie Griffin is an undercover spy-type in the mold of John Shaft meets James Bond meets Austin Powers (without the limey accent) and he is on a mission the stop the "Man" and his lackey, Mr. Feather (Played by Chris Kattan) from controlling the minds of black people everywhere. The movie is the rebirth of the 70's black genre film with a parody feeling to it. It gets going with the jokes about 30 seconds into it and goes full tilt all the way to the end credits (actually through the end credits too!) The audience I watched this movie with was dying laughing throughout. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the work all of the actors did in this movie. Everyone nailed their parts on the head. Pay close attention to Neil Patrick Harris (TV's Doogie Howser) this guy was absolutely hilarious every time he is in front of the camera. Dave Chappelle was great... and.... well.... you all get my point, everyone was great.

I definitely believe that if this movie does good in the box office we will see sequels..... they set it up to be sequel ready. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a good summer popcorn comedy. It never takes itself seriously and it is always funny throughout. Unfortunately no one from the movie was there for any Q & A, but then again, I really didn't expect them to be there. I am hoping that if this movie gets some good word of mouth it will do well, I would LOVE to see another Undercover Brother as they just barely chipped the surface of that potential that this comedy could have.

    re: The Austin Powers trailers

    by billbrasky2620

It's hard to judge whether Austin Powers 3 will be funny or not because thus far the trailers don't contain much actual footage from the movie. I think this is because they are still working on the movie, tweaking the jokes to keep it as current and topical as possible. In fact, I read that "The Osbournes" filmed a scene for the movie only a few weeks ago.

I do agree that Undercover Brother looks pretty funny though. But I have a problem with this review- what kind of heterosexual male says stuff like "I hate Denise Richards"?? Come on, even though she's a horrible actress, she's mainly there to look hot and she does!

Not hot. Annoying and entirely unable to act. On a cruder note, her tits are lopsided, of poor shape, and the parting between them is far too wide to be acceptable in my book. She was good in Starship Troopers and Drop Dead Gorgeous, because she had to play cold, unfeeling, bimbos in both. This used to be known as the 'Nicole Kidman' role, but NK moved on. I suppose DR will too, someday.

Undercover Brother is worth the money.

    by martinjb007

I have to admit when I saw the trailer for this film I was skeptical. But, I went to the same screening in Hollywood, and I laughed all the way through. They say (No, I don't know who they are.) 97% of success of a film is casting and I have to admit, the casting was perfect. It's a movie you'll have to see again to hear the jokes you missed due to you're laughing at the jokes previously done.

It's comedy at it's best. A fun and funny romp.

My co-worker is is new to LA and never been to a screening, loved it as well.

I strongly see a sequel and strongly recommend this film.

    for self-respecting black people everywhere

    by iknowwhatiknow

Please make this stop. Please do not go see this movie. It is not funny. Blaxploitation movies are not funny. Well, let me clarify that a bit. Blaxploitation movies are not funny to black people who would like to be taken seriously in this society and dislike being bombarded with outdated and offensive racial stereotypes masquerading as comedy. My wife and I were subjected to this trailer recently in a theater in good ol' Plano, TX recently. (We like the 'burbs - so sue us!) When my wife asked me how this movie got made, I simply gestured to the cackling throngs of white patrons in the theater and said "That's how." Then again, maybe I'm too sensitive about such things. On second thought, let's just bring back all the hateful racial and ethnic stereotypes that plagued Hollywood's golden age. Fu Manchu, you and about two dozen razor-wielding illegal immigrant migrant farming Mexicans are needed at Paramount. And some drunk Irishmen. And those darn Jews as well (don't want to leave anyone out!) Oh, well. I guess I'll see everyone in line at National Lampoon's remake of "Birth of a Nation"! God bless the USA!

    by nihilon

"So the question is, when I look at likes of Denise Richards, and Nicole Kidman, I wonder who screws women this beautiful"... the answer is: DR: Charlie Sheen; NK: Tom Cruise/Hugh Jackman/Tobey Maguire. So to fuck NK, all you have to do is be rich, famous and a member of People's 50 Most Beautiful People... but to fuck DR, all you need is to be a reformed cokehead/whoremonger. and DR is definitely hot, at least as long as she doesn't open her mouth for anything other than oral sex.

I mean c'mon! I don't wince at her everytime she's on-screen the way Catherine Keener or Meryl Streep makes me absolutely cringe. Sure, she's a little fake, but that doesn't keep me out of the strip clubs. Doesn't Denise deserve the same equality/treatment as your common, everyday stripper? Seriously, I thought she did a pretty descent job in 'Wild Things', and 'Drop Dead Gorgeous'. Maybe if you spent more time in strip clubs, you'd come to appreciate Denise's...ahem...assets a little more...

    Some Random Shout-outs

    by the rayven

First of all, to Brooklyn Bred, thanks for the Black pride. It's good to see some of that going around, and it's especially good to see in a TB where the topic is a movie starring a Black man. I mean, the topic is "Undercover Brother", not Denise friggin' Richards! How come I can't go through a TB without reading a million posts about some girl in the movie! Here's a thought - let's talk about the damn movie. I guess that shows where these TB'ers thoughts are. I guess i'm disappointed that this is the first TB about a "Black movie" in a while, and it'sa being overrun with comments about a White girl (no matter how lovely she is) - just like all the other TBs! Argh! Let's talk about the movie -plot, details, story - things like that - not some girl and whether she's hot or not. As for Mr. "Barry White" - please tell me you aren't Black. Because if so, your posts are setting all your people back 400 years. Your posts are so much a caricature that I can just see you as a young White guy sitting at his keyboard, spitting out every slang term he can in an effort to "sound Black". I'm hoping against hope that you're not Black. Please say it ain't so. Sod off Baldric - if you hate Eddie Griffin so much, WHY IN GOD'S GREAT NAME ARE YOU POSTING IN A TB ABOUT THIS MOVIE? It's like you came here just to bitch. Hush it up, already. We know you don't like Mr. Griffin. Moving on... To Rick Kane, I don't know if you know it or not , but there's one big fact that would nullify your Hollywood "creative" meeting scenario - the fact that "Undercover Brother" existed before the movie as an animated show on the 'net. If I could remember which site, I'd tell you. Also, interestingly enough, a White man created it. Talk about progress. From what I have seen of the trailors, the characters are all true to the 'net series, so it wasn't a bunch of "suits" sitting around coming up with a plan to appeal to the Black demographic (although I applaud you in realizing that there ARE idiots in Hollywood that DO do that) - they just simply saw movie potential in the series and acquired the film rights to it. In fact, "Undercover Brother" has the distinction of being the first web series to have a movie made from it. I'm not attacking you, Mr. Kane, just putting out the facts. With that said, I feel the movie is going to be extremely entertaining and very funny. I wish I could share the opinion of my fellow TB'er in Plano, but I really feel that there is no ill will behind this movie - especially when "Undercover Brother" is the hero, and the hero practically always wins. In fact, I'm looking forward to it more than Episode II - I'm going to see that mainly because I've seen the others and want to keep the streak going. I do hope it's good though. But enough from me - just enjoy the movie... quote The Rayven... nevermore.

Surely you jest. "Undercover Brother" is the worst movie ever? You'd got to be kidding. There's far worse projects that have been made and are in the planning stages now. Just because you may have felt slighted by a few jokes in the movie, it doesn't mean it's the worse movie. Hell, many Black people would contend that they've been forced to deal with jokes made at their expense for years. It's called living with some of the people in America.

    by xthecrovvx

Let's be clear.I have nothing against poking fun at the whole blaxploitation genre, but so far, the only film to have gotten it right in every conceivable way was I'm Gonna Get You Sucka. I've seen the trailer for this movie in front of almost every major movie release in the past two months, all the way back with Resident Evil. It still never ceases to piss me off. First off, Eddie Griffin has NEVER been funny. In ANY movie. Period. Right down there with Chris Tucker in the low life shit category. Somehow he still gets jobs. Weird how Hollywood works. Second, and keep in mind, i dont use this word lightly, but the entire trailer just gave me that nausea that blastant ignorant stereotyping tends to give me. Black woman's pissed cause black man slept with a white girl. Blackness is "confirmed" by how much "soul" you've got. White people in general are ignorant as shit. White girls are blow-up dolls. Its pathetic that somebody in Hollywood thought this was a good idea. I wont even go into what a waste of talent this is for Chi McBride. Just to be short, if they're going to make a movie in this sort of genre, its possible to do it without insulting every black person--hell, EVERYONE'S--intelligence. But, i take much comfort in knowing that with a release date right at the end of the month, it'll get buried quick, fast, and easy under the weight of AOTC and a probably still-going-strong Spiderman. Fuck this movie. Fuck it up its stupid ass. Revolution is my name.

K.I. Wayans is certainly funny and talented and "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" only gives you a taste of how good he is. To basically call the guy a "has-been" is doing a great desservice.

The question is how much does it
take to buy a morbidly obese, red
headed hillbilly these days? Or at
least an advertisement on his website. There was absolutely no
reason to make this movie other
than for a bunch of studio suits to show how 'down' they are with
the brothers. This material has been done before. Sad that the studios don't take advantage of the Internet to get ideas. Of course then their relatives would
have to go out and get jobs on their own.

Maybe that was one of the missing jokes.....BTW, did anybody else watch "Pootie Tang" just to se Chris Rock sneak in a cameo as the rich-but-cheap-bastard? "How much for ONE RIB?" Always fun at bar-b-ques. And the supermarket. And board meetings...or so I'd guess.

Have you gentlemen ever heard of "Hollywood Shuffle"?

While it's not strictly blacksploitation, I think it's the funniest movie every about blacks and their work/portrayal in movies and television. If you want something with a little heart and soul, check out this masterpiece by Robert Townsend.

Because this is a free country and I have a right to express my opinion, for good or ill, about any subject I so choose. In other words, if I feel like bitching about an Eddie Griffin movie, I will bloody well bitch about an Eddie Griffin movie. Maybe, just maybe, I'll reach at least one wayward soul and save them from subjecting themself to this crap.

...played Halle "I didn't deserve my Oscar one bit and I'm not actually that black anyway because my mom is white and I looked retarded during my acceptance speech" Berry. Nah that'd suck. This movie looks pretty cool. I like Dave Chappelle a lot, and I'm interested in seeing Chi McBride in a movie role. I bet Eddie Griffin the basketball player could beat Eddie Griffin the actor in basketball tho.

    Talkback...

Oh, and I'm glad to see a talkback about a black movie too. How come we didn't get one when House Party 4 came out?!?!?! That movie is so funny; it's just a complete rip-off of Ferris Bueller's day off (and yes, House Party 4 does exist, it just doesn't have Kid and Play). Anyone else here love the movie Krush Groove?? Man that flick was awesome. Seriously was. Had all the great rappers in it. In conclusion, this movie looks pretty funny, even if it does have Denise Richards.

Actually, some of the jokes do look pretty lame. I'll see it anyway.
