Troma EntertainmentFather Geek got together with the not-so-warped brain behind TOXIE, Lloyd Kaufman, a couple of three times during the SXSW Film and Music Fest here in the Texas Hill Country back in March. He brought along several of his film's characters, both male and very very female. He's a great guy, sharp as a tack (I totally endorse his plan to put art back into the hands of the people), annnnnnnd lots, no make that tons of fun, sooo take my word for it these Tromatic events he's got planned for Cannes this year are not to be missed. They WILL BE where all the REEL action is this time around...
Now, ol'Father Geek will turn you over to our man on the continent, Robert...
Hi people. Considering the not-very-large amount of mail I received this week, probably some of you have got problems sending me your E-mails, scoops, reviews, etc... Thus, as I I did last week, I suggest you to send me everything at My NEW E-Mail Account and not the old address: euroaicn@yahoo.com.
As I said above, this week there is not much stuff. But we have a complete list of movies that will be presented in all the main sections of the next Cannes Film Festival, besides notes on the next projects of Pierce Brosnan, Jeremy Irons, Natalie Portman and the upcoming star Gael Garcia Bernal (seen in Amores Perros and Y Tu Mama Tambien). So check it all out below...
Cannes Film Festival
A few Days ago were announced the movies that will be shown at the 55th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Paul Thomas Anderson, Alexander Payne, David Cronenberg, Mike Leigh, Roman Polanski and Mike Newell's latest pics will be presented at Cannes in competition. Among the other movies that will compete for the Palme d'Or, there are Le Fils by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (they won in 1999 with Rosetta), Mies vailla Menneisyyttà by Aki Kaurismaki, Bowling for Columbien by Michael Moore and 24 Hour Party People by Michael Winterbottom. Totally, 22 movies will be in competition.
Out of competition, worldwide critics will see Hollywood Ending by Woody Allen (who will open the Festival and will be personally at Cannes to introduce his work), Murder By Numbers by Barbet Schroeder and Ararat by Atom Egoyan (a great surprise for me, actually I was expecting Egoyan would have been in competition). Below, you can read a complete list of movies:

Ken Loach, Rebecca O'Brien launch new production company
UK director Ken Loach and producer Rebecca O’Brien, whose Sweet Sixteen was confirmed for Cannes competition on Wednesday, are splitting from long-standing UK film co-operative Parallax Pictures to launch a new production company, Sixteen Films.

Brosnan has Another Affair...
Irish actor Pierce Brosnan may be getting into gear to make a second movie based on the movie The Thomas Crown Affair.
American ShowBiz magazine Variety has reported that MGM hopes to craft a second franchise for Brosnan in the movie most hard core fans tout as his best.
Apparently the studio has drafted screenwriter Leslie Dixon to return to the fold and write a second installment of The Thomas Crown Affair, the hit remake that starred Brosnan as the dashing tycoon who steals for excitement.
The original movie stared Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.
Sources close to Brosnan have however heard nothing about the movie and the actor himself has told ShowBizIreland.com only before Christmas that he has currently no plans to step back into the bored billionaire's shoes.
There has been no confirmation yet of other characters, Rene Russo and Denis Leary, returning to their respective roles. Nor any word on another cameo of the original sex kitten Faye Dunaway.
Spike's Puckoon from Beyond the Grave...
A film based on the late Spike Milligan's Irish novel Puckoon will be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival next month ShowBizIreland.com can reveal.
A cult novel in many respects, Puckoon is a black comedy about life in a small Irish village. The movie stars Irish comedian Sean Hughes, Sir Richard Attenborough and Elliott Gould (Ocean's Eleven).
A source close to the production, in anticipation of the screening said: "It would have been wonderful if Spike could have been there but he wasn't well enough to travel in any case. Instead, we shall drink and drink again to his memory and hope that when the credits roll there will be a lot of cheering."
No doubt there will be a toast to the Irish genius Milligan after the screening of the film.
Ex-Goon Spike Milligan died in February aged 83.
Last Call for Jeremy Irons...
Irish based Oscar winning actor Jeremy Irons will play the Great Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald in a film to be screened on American TV.
The Lolita star , who ownes a castle in Ireland, depicts the writer in his final, troubled months as he battles with drink and delusional fantasies to try to complete his final work, The Last Tycoon.
Irons lines up beside Scream actress Neve Campbell, who plays a young aspiring writer who lands a job as secretary to Fitzgerald.
In the Bedroom star Sissy Spacek also stars as the writer's institutionalised wife, Zelda.
The movie called Last Call is to be shown by cable channel Showtime on May 25 in the US and sometime after in Europe.
Portman may Sing with the Mermaid...
Star Wars heroine Natalie Portman may be heading to one of Ireland's most remote islands for her next movie.
The star is rumoured to be staring alongside the legendary actress Jessica Lange in a new movie called The Mermaid's Singing.
The 10 million euro movie is expected to start final castings this week with actors such as Hugh Jackman of the X-Men fame going for a part in the movie.
The film is based on Lisa Carey's best selling book of the same name and is expected to follow the book's story to about a Boston-Irish girl named Grainne.
The scene for the new movie may be one of Ireland's islands off the West coast where film scouts have already been looking for locations.
Another movie set to start work soon in Ireland is the remake of Romancing the Stone which is currently getting ready to shoot in Italy - final cast list should be out this week.
Filming of part of the movie is expected to take place in Ireland later this summer.
Red Dwarf and Futurama DVD news
Well first things first Red Dwarf is coming to DVD starting from November 4th 2002 BBC Worldwide will be releasing Red Dwarf starting with series 1 with 2 disks per series 1 episodes, 1 special features in blighty no word on special features or price yet but don't take my word for it read this exclusive interview with some BBC guy from www.reddwarf.co.uk
"Because the Red Dwarf movie's happening at the moment, we thought now would be an ideal time - with lots of cast members, writers and production team around and about - to get bonus footage, commentaries and interviews in the can."
Fans will no doubt be interested to learn that the episodes will be released in their original, unremastered versions. "Two discs per series. Six episodes, with commentaries, on disc one - keep the bit-rate high, keep the quality good - and the bonus disc, on a season by season basis, could [have] anything up to 120 minutes of extras."
What can we expect from the bonus features? "Nothing is locked down - we've got eight series to do! There will be photo galleries, outtakes, deleted scenes, filmed interviews - everything you could imagine would go onto a Hollywood motion picture [DVD] and more! We'll be doing a commentary track with the cast, and a separate commentary track with Doug and - hopefully - Rob, directors and other crew members."
So why has it taken so long for production of the shiny discs to begin? "It's not that we were trying to disappoint the fans - rather the opposite, we wanted to make sure we got the best product possible out on the market. A few years ago, when Worldwide first dipped its toe in the waters of DVD, we had no experience. It was actually the first DVD we thought of doing, [but] we probably hadn't quite got our heads around how good DVD could be. Now we've won many awards - for things like Blue Planet and The League of Gentlemen - we know what we're doing."
And on a final note Futurama is rumoured to be heading for DVD again September time with a season 2 box set in gud ol' blighty will confirm rumour when I can.
Well ciao for now
Luke Nicholas
That's all for today
See you next week

Why?
-
Oh no - and there I was hoping that that idea had sunk. Films based on sitcoms are usually disasters at the best of times and when the sitcom concerned hasn't been any good in years, the results are liable to be toe-curlingly awful. It's a shame, because the Dwarf used to be superb. Whichever of the writers it was who quit after the sixth series believing that they should end it there was very very not wrong indeed. It's been embarrassingly bad ever since.
-
I have to disagree with your comments about it going down hill after series 6, apart from one pretty average episode in series 7 (the Jane Eyre one) i think it has gotten even better .......smeg rules!
-
As a fan of Red Dwarf I want the movie to happen, just to see what it would be like. But it seems so unlikely to happen now - it's been in development hell forever. RD III-VI was when it was at its best for me. But if you look at the work that Grant and Naylor have done seperately after Rob left RD - it's all utter shite!
-
The Red Dwarf movies' been in production/filming for some time now, but where are the shady blurred 'that could be Kryten's new costume or an out-of-focus thermos flask' photos we get with any film in production? I don't care if the movie's good or bad, but I want to know what's happening, by smeg!
-
Sorry to disappoint you, but the RD movie has not entered production yet. They have got a script, rehearsed months ago and did storyboards but not an inch of footage has been shot. Very little information about what is actually going on right now.

Does this mean we'll get the good old chunky model effects rather than the abysmal CGI? Good news if it does - now we just need to get the Han-shoots-first version of Star Wars reinstated...

manages to consider Red Dwarf anything but a poor man's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Maybe someone can explain to me the appeal.
-
It's true! It's true! Shortly after getting no respect from Hollywood after the release of Blood Sucking Freaks, Lloyd Kaufman created Adam Sandler in his secret lab located in the basement of his Hell's Kitchen building. Patiently he watched his evil spawn slowly crawl up the Hollwood food chain, each time gaining more credibility. The kind of credibility Lloyd craved so badly but knew he would never achieve. And now, at long last, the moment has arrived. Pull back the curtain, Lloyd! Pull it back and reveal yourself to the world! - This really happening and this is all totally true. No really, it is.

Spike Millligan God rest his soul wan NOT Irish. Sheeesh do some research - like read his autobiography....Born in India, moved to England when is admittedly Irish father retired from the Army.
-
...and held an Irish passport, something he was very proud of. He considered himself Irish and regularly slagged of Brits such as prince Charles... do the research...
-
Muahahahaha! Please stop moaning, all those of you who are complaining about the UK getting things like Futurama and Buffy on DVD first. Not only do you yankie boys usually get our comedy before we do (Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Withnail and I etc), but you always get better discs than we do. And they're cheaper. Wanna know how much we pay for ours? Do you wanna? Well -

We MUST get around to shooting that bloody short for next year
by charlie & tex
We've been kicking the idea for that short film for a few years now, maybe the prospect of having it shown at a film festival will finally give us a kick up the arse to get the bloody thing done. By the way, we have always been of the opinion that Red Dwarf is about as funny as having a vasectomy without anasthetic.
-
The deal with the Futurama DVD coming out in the UK and not in the US has something to do with syndication markets. Because syndication is such a big market in the US for old TV shows (look at the tremendous success of "Simpsons" reruns- it plays twice a day in my area), there is a conflict with Futurama being released on DVD in the US before it has had a chance to play in syndication. I am not sure about "Family Guy", but I think it is probably the same situation. The Simpsons has only recently come out on DVD- season 1 was released last year. I really hope we don't have to wait 10 years for the Futurama DVD to be released over here.

Quantum Leap is one of my favourite shows alongside Red Dwarf. Am I the only person who actually thought that QL's ending was fitting?
-
Spike was a typically English comedian in the "completely bonkers"
tradition who spent his whole life living and working in England before
(semi) retirement in Ireland. Having been born in India while his father
was serving in the British army he needed to complete complex paperwork
when he formally applied for a British passport a decade or so back. He
took exception to all this claiming that he didn't go through hell
during the war in the British army to have to "prove" he was British to
a bunch of officials. He then applied for an Irish passport. Artists
also receive generous tax breaks in Ireland :) Spike "regularly slagged
off" everyone and everything. He was as politically incorrect as it was
possible to be. His Irish jokes (or anti-Irish jokes depending on
mindset) were particularly well honed. "Have you heard about the Irish
jellyfish - It set". OK you have to hear Spike say it - he was a genius
after all. His sketch about the Irish Space Rocket in the "Q" series was
a classic. Of course he also went after every other target he could
think of. But mostly he will be remembered for his Goon Show magic. He
made his famous remark about Prince Charles when receiving an award in
London. He was prone to making hurtful remarks to even his closest
friends as shown in numerous documentaries. Poor old Prince Charles had
sent a letter of congratulation to the ceremony - he was Spike's and the
Goons Number-one fan. Spike later send Prince Charles a letter saying "I
suppose a Knighthood is out of the question now" but of course it wasn't

Ah, Red Dwarf. The mere mention of it takes me back to the heady days of my youth. How I loved that show. Up until the end of season six, that is. Just thought I'd weigh in on the special editions thing: shit. Utter shit. I loved the model effects. Why? Cause they were convincing. The CGI in the special editions was diabolically bad, as is, I hasten to ad, the CGI in most major films these days. If Jurassic Park could pull that shit off so realistically in 1994 that I couldn't tell the difference between the CGI and the animatronics, why does the CGI in just about everything since (except possibly the Matrix) look so fake and obvious?
-
Your all neglecting the main reason the re-mastered editions were not as goo THEY CUT LINES OUT there may be new and crap computer genreations but they actaully cut out lines from the original episodes, the best example i can think of is in Me squared when lister is reading the arnold news paper clippings and thye cut his entire comment about it in the remastered editions, other things also pissed me off about it. bnut in all fairess they did add a few nice features, like additional parts with Holly talkin over the transitional scenes. And i am hoping they don't do the same for series 4-6 and keep tem true. I do not blieve there is a best series i love them all too much.
(P.S dancing blue midgets was kinda cool.) -
I liked the fact that it left questions unanswered. I enjoy things that do that, especially when the questions themselves are not explicitly spelled out. e.g. is Deckard a replicant? Is Sam dead?
-
C'mon. You really think that QL had a good ending? My memory of it is a bit hazy but wasn't the barman God or something? I loved QL and was looking forward to the end episode for years and when it finally happened I was really confused and a bit disappointed.
-
The movie is due to be released later next year, proper filming has not yet begun due to various cast members being on tours and such.
The movie is expected to be shown in the UK first, because it is a British comedy afterall and fans would be mighty peeved off if it was shown in a different country first.
