Quint has seen tonight's_DINNER FOR FIVE!!!
Harry here... Rod Steiger once told me that if I got between him and the camera he'd shove this lunch can so far up my ass I'd be spitting cans for a week. Rod rules! Here's Quint....
Ahoy there, squirts! 'Tis I, everybody's favorite channel-surfing seaman, Quint, here with a little look at tonight's Dinner for Five, IFC's cool new roundtable discussion show.
Tonight's show features (as always) Jon Favreau as host to special guests Ron Livingston (of Swingers and Office Space fame), Sarah Silverman (of SNL and MR. Show fame), Kevin Pollack (of The Usual Suspects) and Rod Steiger (if you don't know... ::sigh:: On the Waterfront, Dr. Zhivago, Mars Attacks, etc). They're eating at Saddle Peak (Los Angeles).
This dynamic works the best for the show. You have 4 very funny people and you have someone like Steiger, an icon from film's golden years. The show is still funny, but every time Steiger talks everyone is silent. There is no waiting for a pause to jump in and grab the spotlight, no interruptions. Only pure respect and Steiger deserves it. He's a commanding presence, especially when telling stories of his role in On The Waterfront and working with Brando which was a "bad time."
Steiger is the man in this episode. As a joke, Sarah Silverman throws out, "Let's talk about our first homosexual experience!" and Steiger doesn't hesitate! He has one and he tells his story!
Then you have Kevin Pollack whose Christopher Walken imitation is one of the best and funniest around (Jay Mohr aside). "Frankenstein never scared me," Pollack says in his best Walken. "Marsupials do!"
There's lots more funny stuff in this episode. Ron Livingston talks about grabbing Dolly Parton's ass (in his first movie role, Straight Talk), Kevin Pollack talks about how he's remembered as "The Littlest Suspect," then goes on to do a spot on Alan Arkin impression, Sarah Silverman talks about the controversy surrounding her saying "Chink" on Conan O'Brien and Steiger interrupts one of Pollack's jokes by loudly stirring his drink. What more could you ask for?
I've seen 5 of these episodes and I can tell you that this is by far my favorite one. If you haven't watched Dinner For Five yet or were disappointed by an early show... catch this one. There hasn't been one show I've seen that I haven't liked, but tonight's episode is by far the best example of the great chemistry and personality clashes that this format of television can demonstrate. It's a lot of fun, Steiger's stories are fascinating and Pollack does enough impressions to satisfy anybody.
That's it, folks. I can't give away the best jokes and stories. Why would you want to watch the show if I ruin it for you? I hope I've given you folks a glimpse of what tonight's show is. Don't miss it. Stay tuned next week for Daryl Hannah, Andy Dick and Marilyn Manson. I'll fill you in on that one next weekend. 'Til then, this is Quint bidding you all a fond farewell and adieu.

Paid writers couldn't come up with a better train wreck.

Good lord. Anyway, I wish more people got the Independent Movie Channel so they could see this show -- it's really awesome if you're a film buff.

On the Waterfront, Dr Zhivago and Mars Attacks. Spot the odd one out there. I love Mars Attacks an' all, but boy, is it not the same class of film. Kinda like Laurence Olivier, from Hamlet, Henry V, and 'The Betsy'. Or Kyle McLachlan, from Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and 'Showgirls'. Or Dennis Hopper, from Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, and 'Space Truckers'. I really wanna watch the show though. Steiger is always good value, and Herc's description was spot on. How spot on? Good previews are like good party dresses - enticing, but not revealing too much. Betcha love that analogy Herc!

Well come on, the one time Quint's on Coax and I make a mistake. Again, Doh!

The anecdote about Sarah's time as a waitress is pure genius. I fell out of my chair. And Fav's...this is money. Good going with this. One more example why you are one of the brighest stars in Hollywood.

Pollack does a Spacey impression during the show.

Steiger is not only a great actor, he's also an honest human being. FINALLY someone tells it like it is about Marlon Brando. Hereing Steiger's anecdote about working with Brando in ON THE WATERFRONT and explaing why he'll "never work with him again" was the highlight of the episode for me. Like Steiger says, Brando was a guy with incredible talent, a brilliant actor, but his self-centered eccentricities ruined one of the greats of all time. Basically, for those of you who missed the episode or don't get IFC, Steiger said that they were shooting the famous car scene in On the Waterfront. They were doinging Brando's close-ups and two-shots, and Brando started improvising. So Steiger went along with it, even though it made no sense in the context of the scene or the characters, but as Steiger explained, good actors support each other and play along. But then when it came time to do Steiger's close-ups, Brando "went home" and the scriptgirl had to read Brando's lines. So when it came time to support Steiger, Brando took off.

I loved this episode, as I have each one I've seen. Second only to The Osbournes as something new, real and funny. I'm just sad I have to move and won't have the splendor of digital cable next month.
Pollack was hilarious, as was Silverman. Both very underrated. And maybe this goes without saying, but watching this show it occurred to me: how fucking unbelievable would it be to spend a few hours having dinner and shooting the shit with Rod Steiger?
And Ron Livingston seemed every bit the funny, laid-back guy he was on screen in Swingers and Office Space, two movies so good I forced my friends to watch them until they agreed with me.
It actually makes me think I wouldn't be totally opposed to a Swingers sequel. I think Favs and the gang might be able to make it work if they take it from where they are now - instead of struggling actors, they are guys who have had some success but are still dealing with all the Hollywood bullshit.
While Double Down Trent made Swingers work, I think VV is the biggest liability if they actually give this a go. From his other movies since to his appearance on Dinner, he just seems like a dick on screen and off, and I just can't root for the guy anymore. Any thoughts? -
I agree that Vince Vaughn didn' come across as a very likable guy in his appearance on the first episode. But that was just my impression. It's not so much that he came across as a jerk or an asshole or anything, it's just that out of all the guests on the show so far, he seemed the most aware of the cameras and it was like he was playing to the audience. His constant interruptions of Peter Falk, while funny at times, were really annoying. Vince just looked like a ham trying to hog the spotlight. BUT having said all that, it also came through that he was a smart guy and it was clear that he and Favs are great friends. And I'm growing to respect Favs tastes and opinions more and more, so his comment that he truly values Vaughn's input when it comes to scripts was telling. He said something like Vince Vaughn has pretty much the same take as he does on what works and what doesn't.

Dinner For Five is truly an original. The website is great too. www.dinnerforfive.com

This is one of those shows that reminds me of a hang out session between friends where at one point someone says "man, we should be taping this shit". The only diff here is that someone did and it was pretty funny. And Smufette, do you work on the show in any capacity?
-
I love the show and I have gone to various sites and plugged dinnerforfive.com. Is that considered working on it? I certainly work on promoting it. If you're asking if I'm an employee of Jon's, the answer is no.
