Dash101 reviews John Williams' ATTACK OF THE CLONES score

Published at:  Mar 26, 2002 1:22:18 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Well due to the wonders of the Internet... The score for ATTACK OF THE CLONES seems to be spreading like a virus all over the net, and the reviews are coming in. The first seemed to pop up over at TheForce.Net with others popping up all over the place. Personally I still prefer the scores to the original trilogy to this one, though I prefer this score to THE PHANTOM MENACE. Dash101 loves this thing a heaping load. I like it, particularly the love theme... which still reminds me of a more elegant HULK tv show theme (which I mean in a good way... I like that show, though why they called him David Banner I'll never know!) Here's Dash101... psst... Dash, check out the score to DR ZHIVAGO.... you might modify your estimation of romance theme here....

Harry,

I've posted a couple times and I'm glad I have further
information to share. CAUTION: Some Spoilers.

Episode II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

Let me first say that this is an incredible peice of work.
There is already discussion that it the most incredible
acheivment for a motion picture score ever.

It's hard not to agree.

01 - MainTitle And Ambush On Coruscant

Missing the Fox Fanfare. And that is pretty much the only
halfway negative thing I can say here.

Very interesting bridge. It will strike you as very 'Return
of the Jedi' esk. It has a very dark edge. Williams
does a FANTASTIC job of setting up the scene for the
attempted murder on Padme's life.

02 - AcrossTheStars (Love Theme)

This is the biggest suprised for me actually.
Probably the single best love theme I have ever heard,
(it rivals Han and Leia).

A very passionate but dark theme, it crishendos
almost like a waltz. Brilliant!!

03 - Zam The Assassin And The Chase Through Coruscant

Yeah, this is alot of fun. Williams uses a very similar
(almost Jurrasic park type of sound here). One interesting note
is his addition of an electric guitar.

For what it does, it works extreamly well. I wouldnt go so far
as to say it's asteriod chase good, but it works well.

04 - Yoda And The Younglings

This track is almost like a Robin Hood or Hook. So gental and
sweet. It's quite a treat to hear. Very very atmospheric.
Its strange too because this has a Love Theme rift in it
and the two work soooo well together. And YES FOLKS!
The original The ! Force/Skywalker theme is IN IT!!! Old school!

05 - Departing Coruscant

THIS track.. Aaahhh This track! Again with the Force/Skywalker
theme. By this point in the soundtrack, your heart should be
filled with a glee unlike you've felt for a long long time.

06 - Anakin And Padme

Actually this track is so much like Harry Potter it's scary.
Very reminisent to a time long ago. It uses the Love theme
quite heavily through out.

07 - Jangos Escape

Ok... Its' hard to tell you what this sounds like because I can't
recall another SW track like this one. This track is loud
and all over the place. Alot of fun (drums and all).

08 - The Meadow Picnic

Much like Anakin and Padme, this uses alot of Love Theme
and will work very very well as what it was inteaded. Suplimental
music.

09 - Bounty Hunters Hot Pursuit

I don't know where Williams decided to eat lunch the day he wrote this,
but I've love to tear apart his food to see if it was spiked with anything.

THIS TRACK IS BRILLIANT!... As in AMAZING!...

He uses a theme already heard in Naboo (Episode I) and goes and does
this completley new string rift. Very nice. You'll love the Trade Federation
March in this.. mooooohahaha!

10 - Return To Tatooine

If any track reminds me of Return of the Jedi, it's this one.
I'll say only this about it: Lars Homestead meets Endor.

11 - The Tusken Camp And TheHomestead

There is something about this track and I'm having a problem figuring out.
Its soooo familiar and calm. And yet I can't figure it out. Love the EMPERIAL
THEME!!! .. its quite but obvious!!... SOO EVIL!!... GOD I need a kleenex.

12 - Love Pledge And The Arena

A combination of Love Theme, Duel of the Fates, Federation March and
just all around KICK ASS. ... Amazing!!..

13 - Confrontation With Count Dooku And Finale

Ok, pull up a damn chair! We got alot of doooooling to do.
In this final track, Williams uses an incredible selection of
themes from the Original Series and the new.

Folks, I can't tell you how freaking great this last track is.
Sort of a mix between Episode One, Episode V and Episode VI.

Harry/Talkbackers...

I have heard little that can compaire.. This is incredible!!
....

And with that, I'm out.

    by elicash

Hey Harry, I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada, and heard your discussion with Al Stafford on a local talk radio program about Attack of the Clones. It was cool hearing you on a show I listen to quite frequently! I was like HEY ITS KNOWLES!! I read his site all the time!! You mentioned Father Geek saw the film with you and that he didnt like Anakin...how about a review from Father Geek for a different perspective. I'm sure I will enjoy AOTC, I liked parts of the Phantom Menace...and like a stubborn SW fan chose to ignore the bad parts. A plea to Star Wars fans....it's just a series of films...lets treat them as such... I want to hear the Clones score...time to search.

This may have been the kernel source of the accusations leveled against Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson (snicker snicker) by Dr. Wertham n the 50s. At least the track titles don't give out any major plot points. TPM had that track with a title about Qui-Gon's funeral. The soundtrack preceeded the films UK release by about 2 months. Who thought picking up a CD could be dangerous. Perhaps some of the tracks aren't fully named or they have side notes - The Tusken Village -(the part where Anakin freaks out and kills all the Sand People) copyright LFL.

AotC soundtrack is being waaayyyy overhyped.

    by thumper2k1

Fist off, correct me if I'm wrong, but the Love theme is the only piece of new music in the entire soundtrack. The rest of the tracks are just filler. Frenetic violin playing and drum beating, sprinkled with recycled various Star Wars themes so they can pass it off as music. Zam the assassin track is by the worst offender, 11 minutes of no music. Nothing in the soundtrack is memorable. Across the Stars is good but it doesn't even come close to Han and Leia's love theme.

    by psychopompous

I thought the score on TPM was far and away the best thing about it, but anyone reviewing music who spells crescendo "crishendo" has lost a bit of credibility in my mind. :) On the other hand he is probably just a layman enjoying a piece of music, which i am also, so his opinion is probably more in line with what mine will be than had we had a real musician writing it.

John Williams is NOT the best working today...

    by sundance

The best is Ennio Morricone. His body of work (over 500 scores) is much greater than Williams and much more diverse. He's done every style imaginable and done it with originality. Nothing Williams has done can compare with the high points of The Mission or surpasses Once Upon a Time in the West or Cinema Paradiso.

    by nazismasher

The Phantom Menace was an excellent score full of surprises from Herr Williams along with his traditional genius for orchestration, yet I have to say that it failed on some level to recapture the magic of the original or even of his classic music. Maybe this is partly due to this particular fan's disappointment with the film itself, yet it also signaled a turn for Williams with its memorable use of large choral ensemles as he has been adding new elements to his bag of tricks since then. Just listen to his A.I. music - echoes of Phillip Glass, John Adams, and Steve Reich. I look forward to hearing something just as new from AOTC. Hopefully this time the film itself will be firing on all cylinders. Film music without a story can also be a pretty boring thing.

And the Force/Skywalker theme? The Force has a theme, and Luke Skywalker has a theme. They are two separate themes. This guy is a fan boy who has no idea what he's talking about. Saw ET with the ladyfriend on the weekend. Her one complaint was that the musical score was too 'loud and blaring'. For about 30 seconds during the final scene I could see her plugging her ears. It was damn loud. "The fanfare and drums was overdoing it. So much for sentimentality," she said, which I think summed it up pretty well.

I have to say I'm extremely pleased though it has to be said Dash101 probably let his enthusiasm overwhelm him somewhat. Anyhow, I think it would be too mean for some of you guys to crush his gaiety simply because you don't share in his exhuberance. It's another wonderful score from Williams. Aaaaah, get yourselves a copy of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto, listen to the first movement as well as the adagio molto from Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony and reflect on the echoes within Accross the Stars track. The next few years are going to be like Tchaikovsky (Williams) and Wagner ("you know of whom I speak") scoring for the great adventure films of all time.

yet. Wait another year or so and Lucas will likely put out a 2-CD version set in chronological order with all cues & incidental music as a "special edition". I saw it listed on a news group with an additional "bonus track". It doesn't seem to be a differnt take or discarded material, its part of the movie soundtrack. So why not admit that and just include it instead of trying to make me think I'm getting something special? Why not put out the whole soundtrack upon initial release? Anyway, The soundtrack reminds me of "Raiders" in a lot of parts, oddly enough. But I'm no music expert or anything.

alright, he'll come up with catchy themes but please his music can really get in the way of the action. his music is never subtle in any way shape or form. his music tells us how we need to feel, this is happy music, this is bad guy music, i mean sure sometimes you want a little of that, but john over does it. he just doesn't know how to be subtle, also i don't think he is very good at knowing when not to have music, sometimes it can but just as amazing when the composer knows to keep quiet, for example i believe that howard shore's LOTR soundtrack is the antithesis of john williams, his music doesn't get in the way of the action, williams does!!!

I have everything he has done and this one is really one of his best efforts lately. Action charged and extremely romantic. the way the classic themes are introduced will water your eyes unless you are Clint Eastwood. Really bullseye, Williams hit the nail real hard. Trent Reznor For Episode III OR...What's Brian May Doing The

    by jollydwarf

Listn, I have no idea how this soundtrack sounds. I refused to read past the sixth track, for fear of a "Qui Gon's Noble End"-type spoiler in the titles. But how I would love to hear Gabriel Byrne as Tarkin doing a voiceover with Ian McDiarmid as the soon-to-be Emperor. Start the film with the traditional "A long time ago..." screen and save the opening scroll for a moment. Just show a planet (Alderaan, Coruscant, Naboo, any one will do) and have Palpatine say "Tarkin, I'm borrred...what plaything can you offer me today?" "An obscure body in the Outer Rim system, my lord. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet (insert planet name)." "How peaceful it looks." (Cheesy laser-vibrato sound effect followed by thunder)"Most effective, my lord. Will you destroy this...(insert planet name)?" "Later, I like to play with things awhile...before annihilation." (Echoes of laughter fading into pulsing low "A" bass note)THEN segue into "Star Wars" theme. Sure, it's been done before, but you kids don't know what I'm talking about. And you don't think that the "new bad guy" that they let 'slip' isn't Tarkin? Who the fuck else could it be? Who REALLY has Vader on a short leash? Plus, he was already mentioned in a prequel hack novel. I believe it was "Cloak of Deception". But the whole thing that really alarms me here is the use of an electric guitar in a Star Wars score. Who's in the Coruscant chase anyways? Kenobi and Skywalker or Crockett and Tubbs? Phil Collins to sing "I can feel a tre-mor in the Force tonight, my Lord..."? Glenn Frey to sing us the "Kessel Run Blues" in an Episode III cameo, only to walk/stumble out of the cantina he plays in with a Twi'lek under each arm? I PLAY GUITAR AND THERE SHOULD BE NO SUCH THING IN A STAR WARS SCORE. EVER. I don't want to fucking hear "Passion and Warfare" underneath a lightsaber duel. But I do love Steve Vai.

    by the yodeler

Man, every new Star Wars news item is just driving me insane. At least i am driving people at school nuts. Every day they have to listen to me rant about how many days are left. By the way, how many of you saw the trailer for Country Bears that was attached to Ice Age. You thought that Scooby-Doo was the sign of the apocalypse? Check out that trailer. Ugghhhhh.

By the way, only 7 weeks left!!!!!
(It sounds shorter if you use weeks instead of days)

New AICN Catchphrase: "It crishendos almost like a waltz"

    by lazarus long

Yeah, I know it's not "reach your vertical limit" or "Judi Dench gets rapped by her brother", but I was laughing. It doesn't matter how good this score is, or how good the special effects are, the academy will fuck Lucas again next year like they did for Episode I. Yeah, they broke every previous boundary in the industry with sound design and computer animation. But it lost for insider political bullshit, and don't think the Academy suddenly likes Lucas now. They better be giving him an honorary oscar after Episode III, and Jackson better get an honorary after Return of the King, because you know he ain't winning best director either of the next two years.

    The Audience is Listening 2

    by smokinyoda

OK I've had just about enough of this. Not everyone has to like this soundtrack, but many of your reasons are ridiculous. For example, one of the main complaints that I read was that it sounds "recycled". Wow. I'm speechless. You mean to tell me that the 5th movie in a saga has music that sounds familiar? Lets think about that one before we type it, ok people.
Another complaint I heard from some joker was that Williams' music doesn't blend into the scene like LOTR does. First of all it does when it's supposed to, and doesn't when it's not. Watch Star Wars and play a drinking game. Be drinking everytime music is playing in the movie. I'll even spot you the first 10 mins. and I swear you will be praying to the porceline god before the Falcon gets caught in the tractor beam. Music is constantly going on in all the Star Wars movies. Lucas uses music as a tool to tell his story, thats why he works so closely with Williams in the use of themes for different characters.
You don't always know the music is there, but when it
"crescendos like a waltz" (wtf?)you will notice it.
As for people not saying it's good already....the soundtrack will continue to improve when we can relate the situations and the specific emotions with the music. Give it some time. You may like it, hell, people are even warming up to the title AOTC. Give it time. It's ok for you to enjoy it and still have LOTR be your favorite movie.

    Lucas and Oscars

    by darth melkor

Actually Lucas received the Thalberg award back in the 80s which is the single highest honor a filmaker can receive. It's presented by the Academy, you may remember Warren Beatty receiving one 2 years ago. It's an even higher award than an honorary Oscar.

    Think Little Green Man

    by smokinyoda

TPM got totally screwed at the Oscars. As for the score, you're probably right. Dual of Fates was great, but I don't know if the whole thing deserved an Oscar. But when it comes to the visual effects....TPM got the shaft. Oh but the Matrix had soul....Bullshit. That is simply opinion, dude. Here comes a fact. TPM created a new bar of excellence in effects. ILM set out and did things that were all but impossible way back when they first got their look at the storyboards. They had to create new achievements in what visual effects are.
What did the Matrix do? They had a gimmic called bullet-time which, I'm sorry, was creative, but not innovative. THATS IT! The rest of it was nothing new, just cool looking because of the camera angles. TPM also got screwed, like all sci-fi films do, on awards like costume and set design. When are people going to learn that it is much more artistic and creative to create an entire culture with the set and costumes than it is to recreate the goddamn 19th Century. TPM got screwed.
As for sound effects...I'm not even going to talk about this one because I've already made my points, simply combine my arguements for the above and place here. Ben Burtt had to create all those sounds...ALL!! The way he captures and modifies sounds from the real world to create the noises we hear in Star Wars is amazing. The man is a genius. Star Wars is almost 50% sound and it needs to get its props. As for you, Little Green Man, yes the Matrix kicked ass and is one of the best movies I've ever seen, but it doesn't even come close to Star Wars in some parts.

    Re: Re: Recycled

    by smokinyoda

ummmmmm you're wrong. You obviously were not "expecting" the music to be similar because it is still one of your strongest complaints. The music is all original with excellent teases of themes from TPM and, best of all, the OT. The themes Williams uses sound recycled as you put it because they are SUPPOSED to sound that way. How lame would it have been if we would have downloaded this music and it just didn't sound like Star Wars at all. Everybody including me would be on here flamming the soundtrack.
Now, everybody with brain 1 in their dome can realize that Williams, like nearly every other modern composer, steals from himself. Thank God for AOTC that it's a sequel, well a prequel-sequel and the music is supposed to sound old and familiar, but somehow new and different. Listen to it again, you have to understand what I"m saying, nearly everybody else on this Talkback seems to understand.

    by rogue_leader

I am a little let down by one thing. There is only one new developed theme. That being the new love theme Across the Stars. Thats not to say there aren't some other new thematic materials used here. There are some other new motifs and such, but the love theme is still the only one fully developed. Anyway regardless this still blows away that crappy LOTR score. Williams once again proves that he can put a nobody like Howard Shore in his place. All LOTR fans better wake up and recognize SW owns.

I've got all the tracks in my Audiogalaxy queue, listening to them as I get them. The opener is good, as usual. The love theme is incredible. The third track, however ("Zam the Assassin and the Chase Through Coruscant") -- and I'm listening to it again to catch what I missed -- is eleven minutes of percussive brass violins, woodwinds, and drums, with an inexplicable electric guitar riff (!), with no melody, harmony, or tonality whatsoever, but it's a great heartpounder with some cool drumwork that I'm sure will fit fine with the film. Good as soundtrack, so-so as music. Can't wait for the rest of it, though.

That one was so . . . wishy washy and bland. But the AOTC score seems to have genuine emotion and excitement behind it. I really love the fact that Williams continues to fade his end credit score instead of ending with a big bang like the original trilogy. A somber hint of Anakin's/Vader's theme to create a sense of foreboding. Cool. This isn't the best soundtrack ever. It's not even Williams' best score ever. So far in the prequel's music I count 3 new themes

    by z of x

duel of the fates, anakin's theme (rather weak IMHO) and now accross the stars. I suppose you could count another one if you recognize the trade federation music as a theme. The cool thing about writing themes for character's is that snippets CAN be used and recognized by the audience. Some may be annoyed about being "teased" (no offense) but I really don't think that that's the point. When we hear the imperial march at the end of confrontation with C. Dooku, it's there to get us thinking about the Empire. I guess the only one around here who know's for sure is Harry (lucky SOB) but I imagine that the Imp March underscores the first mention in the movie of the Empire. There may not even be any mention of the actual "Empire" per se, but because the association we make with that music, Williams/Lucus make sure that that's what we'll be thinking about. On another note (heh, heh) Shore's score for FOTR is overall much less intrusive and is intrinsically (hope I spelled that right for the SP nazi's) more melodic than Williams's AOTC, but then they are different movies in different genres. Personally, I think that Accross the Stars is beautiful and if it copies something else that William's has written then I'm glad I haven't heard it. Zam the assissin reminds me of my Crouching Tiger soundtrack (the drums, not the cello).

I think the part in the DVD that you're referring to is when Williams asks Lucus if he wants a version w/o the choir just in case they decide the choir singing is too envasive for the scene....could be wrong tho.

    by minderbinder

Good score, especially some of the action cues, but I'd agree with the notion that it doesn't have much in the way of memorable new themes. The love theme is about it, and it's nothing special (plus he repeats it a bunch of times, Harry Potter style - personally, I started getting annoyed with it after only a couple listenings). And for those of you keeping score, the best love theme ever is from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Michel Legrand. Great stuff. And about the music distracting from the movie, hell yes. Someone mentioned that the SW movies have wall to wall music - they do, and it can be a bad thing (there were scenes with obnoxious music in TPM). Silence is effective, I wish lucas (and spielberg) would learn that (rent a zemeckis film sometime, guys!). A good score doesn't draw attention to itself and should NEVER distract from what's going on onscreen. One thing to keep in mind - this isn't the full score of the film (expect at least 20-40 minutes more in the "SE" soundtrack in time for christmas), there may be more original stuff (or more references to existing themes).

Good point. The Godfather has some great music and only one real theme but at the moments when the drama is highest, the music gets out of the way and lets the ACTORS do their job. Take the restaurant scene. No music, even when Mikey's in the bathroom psyching himself up to murder two men. Then, at the END of the scene we get music...like a commentary on the action. Masterful.

Attack Of The Clones - The Score

    by ericalan69

Well, far be it from me to fling mud and piss in someone's Milk Duds, but I kind of like the score, though I agree with the previous posters who've mentioned the relative lack of definitively new music. S'okay, though, because I think if you sit down and listen to the scores from the other 5 SW films, you'll notice the natural progression more. Also, it's *really* fucking weird hearing the music and not being able to associate it with specific scenes in my mind- it's very odd to hear it before seeing the film. I'll withhold further judgement until I actually hear it in use during the film. // Oh, and if you're having trouble finding 'Across The Stars' on AudioGalaxy, you have to specifically search for "Across The Stars (Love Theme)" (sans quotation marks, of course). // e.

I have to say, that this reviewer is nothing but a hype machine.

The soundtrack lacks the originality found in most of the other scores. It seems rehashed, overblown. Not a single song has any emotional movement to it and the entire soundtrack lacks a stand out piece ala the more recent "Duel of the Fates".

Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but I'd rank it probably in 5th best Star Wars soundtrack to date. And yes, by that, I mean last.

"This score is soooo recycled!" Who the fuck cares? If he created 10 great new themes youd bitch and moan about how he didnt use enough of the old themes. Im so sick of the talkbacks! Did you see the movie? Do you know how it works with it? Personally I think Across the Stars is the best Star Wars theme since The Imperial March. Put the trailers on mute and play the theme (not just the Episode II trailers...play one of the OT special edition trailers) and it works masterfully. Do you people think Williams couldnt write a Clone March or a Theme for Count Dooku? He either chose not to, or he chose not to put it on this soundtrack - there are 50 minutes of music still leftin the movie you know. Still, I think making ATS the only significant knew theme is just fine. The theme is TRAGIC and its perfect for not only what is going on with Anakin but also the republic. Like Anakin the republic is slowing moving towards the dark side and this track is such a mixture of despair and hope. It's absolutely wonderful. So you then turn to criticize Williams' RECYCLING OLD THEMES? Christ almighty! It's called continuity dick heads - you put the force theme in when the force is controlling someones fate - having the Binary Sunset Music move directly into Duel of the Fates is genius (when thinking about what scene it accompanies). Also in track 13 - When the imperial march is playing it is NOT referring to Anakin - it's referring to the creation of the EMPIRE hence the IMPERIAL MARCH. This is a very subtle score, lets hope the movie fits the tone set by this. Oh and all of you talkbackers deserve Hell. I'm so fucking sick of the cynicism here!!!!!

    by morgus

It's peppered all throughout THE PHANTOM MENACE, trying to transform into THE IMPERIAL MARCH. Aside from one little afterthought, just before the credits close, Anakin's Theme is nowhere to be found on the AOTC soundtrack... at least, not in this version, which lacks over an hour of music from the film. The Love Theme almost seems to have strains of Anakin's Theme, but I was expecting to hear it more clearly. The explosion of the Imperial March in track 13, by the way, is phenomenal.

    He really is changing

    by jjhonky

I agree with Rogue_Leader that this puts Shore's LOTR soundtrack in its place. But, I loved Shore's score, I really, really loved it, yet, in no way does his talent compare to the mastery of Williams. Same with James Horner. These other guys are very good at scoring, they can draw on the emotions better than most, but they are in NO WAY masters at composing. It's like food: you got cooks, chefs, and you have culinary masters. Horner will cook you a nice Cheesburger, Shore will mix up a nice salad. But Williams, he's like Wolfgang Puck, or Emeril. He'll make you a plate that not only tastes good, but looks good. And you'll never no how he made it, or what tiny ingredients he mixed in. He KNOWS music in and out. Though Williams has definately passed his peak and is very far along on the downhill slope of his career, he can still write so technical, so tight, so pertinant and in time with every single event on the screen, that it's almost miraculous. YOU try writing some of his material. Try examining it, try picking it apart, try singling out instruments. You can pick a Horner piece apart and play it on a piano with two fingers. With Williams, you have to study it over and over and over and you'll always find something new, some new theme, some horn you never heard before, some bass line you didn't know was there. He's a master and genius whose work I doubt any of you can even come close to comprehending.

This is a fine score by an excellent composer. No, it's not his best, but it is at least better than average. Would you rather have a "Matrix" soundtrack that's already dated? I like Williams because he is a thematic composer - that is, he develops and uses themes to underscore characters and events. Contrast this to composers who just throw down chords for 90 minutes, and the battle lines are drawn. I liked Old Elfman, but New Elfman seems set on writing murky "Dolores Claiborne"-type scores. Shore's score for FOTR was fine, but the Orc/Evil theme is a little hard to rock out to while driving on the freeway. Williams has a lot on his hands, trying to tie 6 movies together thematically. It's not like he can scrap everything and do a "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack for AOTC. (You know, Picasso was a f*cking hack, since he always used right angles. And that "blue period!" What a f*cking hack.)

    by potsy

Some of you guys have to be some of the most pathetic people on the face of the planet. I admit I'm a nerd, too (I wouldn't be here if I wasn't), but some of you people really need to get a grip.

First of all, virtually every negative post here talks a bunch of shit, and then says "Lord of the Rings is better". Get it through your head, it is NOT a competition! If you're obsessed about it enough to bitch and moan on a post about a movie that you hate, you have WAY too much time on your hands. It's analagous to me going to a Insync site to talk shit because I love the Clash. I wouldn't deign to go to a boy band site. If you feel so strongly that Episode II is going to suck, why do you waste your time on Episode II posts? I love Star Wars and have all my life. I tend to feel a litte wave of anticipation when I learn something new about a movie I've been looking forward to for almost twenty years. I guess that's a difference between you and me.

Secondly, to the people who argue the new soundtrack sounds recycled: Can you name a soundtrack to ANY sequel written by the same composer that DOESN'T reuse the themes of the successful original? What do you really expect? What would make this music better for you? Would you like John Williams to come out of your speakers and give you a blow job while you listen? Get a grip, and if you're going to criticize, a least think your criticisms through.

Other than that, enjoy the anticipation for a movie that will make us feel young again, and try your best to enjoy the movie when it comes out. If you can't do that, why are you even here?

Your ignorence baffles me. Why put a song that is already on another score from another Star Wars movie on this soundtrack? This is what I mean. The Imperial March is played ALOT during ROTJ, but is it on the soundtrack? NO! Why not? Beacuse it was on the ESB soundtrack. Does that mean we are not going to hear even more of the Imperial March in EP2 or 3? No. I suspect we hear quite a bit more of Duel of Fates that there is on the soundtrack because of the power and success of the piece. Across the Stars is amazing. The Count Dooku piece, especially the end before the sredits roll is chilling, how much more Star Wars music do you friggen need. You've got to be kidding me. You said a good score NEVER takes away from the action on the screen....well, stop watching Star Wars. Don't ever watch it ever again. Star Wars is a space opera. It uses visuals and sound to tell the story. Williams is a master at that composing technique it has some French name, motif something or other, in which he creats themes for each character. You may be partially right, a good soundtrack doesn't take away from the action on screen, but a GREAT soundtrack cannot be ignored. I'm happy to see that AOTC was able to be up to par with the other sundtracks in the series.

It's a PREQUEL! Of course all of the films are going to share thematic elements, music or otherwise. I actually prefer sequels/prequels to weave in familiar motifs rather than try to be radically different. I hated the score to LAST CRUSADE just because it was so un-Indiana Jones like. With STAR WARS Williams has created themes to act as audio cues to actions and/or feelings. He's one of the best at doing such. His SUPERMAN score is the same way. L8r

    I failed

    by the yodeler

I'm sorry guys and girls. Things just didnt come together. I failed in my quest to take out N-Sync. They were playing here in town, and my sources just didnt follow through. I thought that if i took them out, then we would be guaranteed that they wouldn't appear in the movie. My bad. Also, it's damn hard to judge a music score when you aren't sure what the visuals will be. I listened to the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack in early December, and I had no clue how well the music would fit in with the movie. It sounded fine, but not knowing what would be on the screen severely limits the scope of the soundtrack. Everyone just needs to calm down a bit. I can't wait for the movie either, but this is just a soundtrack. Take a deep breathe, relax, let it out. Thats good. By the way, if anyone wants to send me some explosives, i might be able to hardwire something to their bus.

AOTC is Classic Williams. JW is still GOD!

    by jmyoda

The AOTC soundtrack is awesome! It's the first thing connected to the film that has really made me excited. I managed to get all the tracks off of AudioGalaxy by searching for the track names except "Across the Stars" which I had to download off of WinMX. I was disappointed with the score for 'The Pantom Menace' just as I was disappointed with the film itself. Except for "Duel of the Fates" and "Anakin's Theme" stood out and the latter was never used to it's full potential in the film. Not that it wasn't a very good score, it just seemed a little too different from his brilliant scores for the Holy Trilogy. This one however is CLASSIC John Williams Star Wars music. I especially love the way he uses Vader's theme in "Tusken Camp" and "Confrontation With Count Dooku". Without seeing the film I can only imagine that at these two musical cues Anakin has his first brushes with the Darkside. Even the new love theme has a dark, foreboding quality. Very Wagner-like. It's interesting that in the finale scene from "The Empire Strikes Back" we start off with the Force Theme which melds into Han and Leia's theme and then the end titles start. Where at the end of AOTC we have Vader's theme followed by the new Love theme, then the end titles. Obviously the Force theme at that point in 'Empire' was meant to symbolize hope at a dark time while Vader's theme tells us hope is slipping away since Anakin has started his path towards the Darkside. Williams made a similar connection between the finales of "The Phantom Menace" and "A New Hope". In "A New Hope" the music for the celebration is the Force Theme (known at that time as Obi-Wan's Theme) played in a very heroic manner since this first major blow was a victory for not only Luke but Obi-Wan and the fallen Jedi. At the end celebration in TPM Williams skillfully took his dark - almost satanic theme for Palpatine/Siddious and turned it into a bright, cheery Gungan celebration tune with a upbeat wordless children's choir replacing the dark and menacing male-choir. Obviously he was telling us while the good guys THINK they've won it really was a victory for Palpatine since the whole point of the conflict was for him to get elected Chancellor. This shows us even if the prequels continue to disappoint us when compared to the original trilogy at least JW's music won't. He may have been out done by Howard Shore's magnificent score for "The Fellowship of the Ring" this year but it seems the AOTC score will give Shore's score for "The Two Towers" a run for it's money. It's a great time to be a film score fan! --------- BTW since AG has blocked the files now at LucasFilm's request just look for them on WinMX, Kazza, Morpheus or check out some MP3 channels on IRC. I guarantee it's not hard to find since it's spread like wildfire and there is no way Lucasfilm can stop everyone. IMO they have nothing to worry about since everyone is still going to buy the CD when it hits stores and it'll sell a bazzilion copies. Plus I would think having everyone go nuts looking for the score online is terrific publicity and it's not costing them a cent! In fact I bet all the entertainment outlets will be talking about it soon. Of course the real kicker would be that Lucasfilm leaked it on purpose just as they leaked the film to Harry on purpose. I'd prefer that to cheap stunts like the N'Sync deal that just served to piss off the core audience...

"You won't like me when I'm angry."

I don't think "Across the Stars" sounds anything like the Hulk theme. However there is a section of Jerry Goldsmith's theme for 'First Contact' that has always reminded me of the Hulk Theme.

Not life altering, but it sounds exciting!!!

    by romanweb

Wow, I listened to only a couple of tracks and John Williams score sounds great! Definately a mood in this one. He rather kept it consistent so when you listen you know it's a Star Wars movie. I love that! I really liked the conveyer belt bonus track, the constant percussion throughout was a real nice touch. Allright JW!! You did it again!

    distracting scores

    by minderbinder

"You said a good score NEVER takes away from the action on the screen....well, stop watching Star Wars." OK, Mista Bossman. "Williams is a master at that composing technique it has some French name, motif something or other" That would be leitmotif, a la Wagner. "a GREAT soundtrack cannot be ignored" No, a great soundtrack should fit in with the movie. If you think "great costume" or "great prosthetics" or "great CGI" or "great bluescreen", they're not so great. Sure, there will be moments in a film that are pure action or scenery (or credits) where the music can be a focus, but it should never distract when something important is going on onscreen, especially dialogue. And some scenes are better off WITHOUT MUSIC. Sadly, JW has been guilty of this fairly often in recent years. *** And on the recycling thing...people aren't complaining that old themes are reused, that's a given. The issue is that it doesn't seem like there are many NEW memorable themes, reusing stuff is fine as long as there is great new material. It's a good score, but it doesn't have a Duel of the Fates.

    Nice, but not his best.

    by duke santos

A strong set of tracks, all with a dark or at least melancholy undertone. Perfect for what's to come. The Love Theme hints at the hopelessness that lies ahead.

These are great and inventive...although William's TESB work is my favorite is a much better standalone effort, in my opinion.

    Missing themes

    by chipvicious

Two key muscial themes, or to use a semi-gay word "leit-motifs" from the original trilogy that would seem appropriate here are missing:
"The Emperor's theme" and Boba Fett's (actual title from ep.V ST: "departure of Boba Fett").
Given what we know about the plot of AOTC I am surprised not to hear echoes of these, esp. since the Emperor's theme was featured in TPM

"If any track reminds me of Return of the Jedi, it's this on

    by pops freshemeyer

So what's that supposed to mean, that Obi_Wan and his amazing friends round up a bunch of Jawa's and they fight off the evil clone army? Because, really now, if the clones are the predecessors of the Imperial Stormtroopers, wouldn't that mean that the Stormtroopers are hella tougher than a bunch of Jango clones? Shit, this is gonna suck...

    Attack of The Clones, eh?

    by pops freshemeyer

Hell, I never thought I'd see the day that there would be a movie about Jim Rome. Will Lust For Life, Welcome To The Jungle, and Jungle Boogie all be on the offical soundtrack? As Smacksaw Lee Hamilton would say, goodnight now...

    After a couple of days

    by jjhonky

I've been listening to the soundtrack over and over and dissecting it. It may sound "okay" the first time you hear it all the way through, but then as you KEEP listening to it, as you KEEP dissecting it, you will find so many hidden themes and treasures. I have to say hats off to Williams for not just making a very memorable them (Across the Stars), but for doing a bang up job on capturing the ATMOSPHERE of the different scenes. Amidala and the Naboo culture, though alien and "far away" would be compared to a mix between Royal Portuguese and Classic Venice, with a touch of Carribean Dutch. When you listen to the Medow Picinic you can pictures these cultures mixed (which is very exciting and must have been challenging for Williams). Close your eyes when you listen to Across the Stars .. forget Star Wars for a moment .. picture a swashbuckling epic romance on the high seas. It has that waltz-y feel as it captures all those cutures and period flavors then throws in romance. It's very VERY effective. Couldn't get it out of my head for days.
