YOSSARIAN Reports In On The TREK: NEMESIS Sets And Script!!

Published at:  Mar 14, 2002 7:20:32 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I've heard that NEMESIS was a difficult shoot, and that Stuart Baird wasn't necessarily beloved by the cast and crew, but maybe out of adversity something really good can result. Certainly seems like YOSSARIAN liked what he saw. I'll let him tell you about it. I'll warn you... this guy doesn't hesitate before plunging into MONSTER spoilers, and even though I've inviso-texted them, they're pretty blatant. Proceed at your own risk.

Hello Moriarty,

Call me Yossarian. I haven't seen anything on Nemesis
on AICN in a while. I've been on the Paramount lot
several times over the last couple months and have
watched with keen interest as they film the latest and
i'm sorry to report last movie with the TNG crew.

Besides wondering through the sets, which I have to
add are the best I've seen for any trek movie so far,
I also managed to get a hold of a new version of the
script by Gladiator scribe John Logan.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!!!

As everyone has probably heard the bad guys this time
out are the Romulans, and all I can say is it's about
damn time. As the film opens, Riker and Troi are
getting married in Alaska, with the entire crew there
to celebrate. it's a wonderful way to begin saying
goodbye to these old friends, and there are some truly
funny and touching moments here.

After some serious libations, the hung over crew
boards Enterprise and heads for Betazed for the second
half of the wedding, a nude reception no one is
looking forward to.

On the way, they pick up a strange sensor reading from a nearby star system. It appears to be a positronic
signature like Data's.

Picard, Worf and Data head down to the planet in a
large shuttle to investigate. On the surface they set
out in a dune buggy? (it looks a lot cooler than it
sounds). they find pieces of a Data like android, (no,
it's not Lore), scattered over a small area. After a
brief chase sequence involving some not so friendly
natives, Picard and company get back to Enterprise.
Data and Geordi reassemble the android, named B-9,
only to find out it's more like Forest Gump than Data.

Before we find out anything else, Enterprise is
ordered to Romulus. There has been a coup by the
military, and the new leader, Shinzon, wants to open
peace negotiations with the Federation. Nothing
suspicious so far, huh?

On Romulus, we find out that the Remans, a warrior
slave race from the planet Remus, have taken over the
empire. These guys are exceptionally creepy.

HIGHLIGHT TO READ SPOILERS!! Now for the real shocker, Picard meets the enigmatic Shinzon, only to find out he's a young human. And not just any human, he's Picard's clone!

The rest of the movie is basically a long action scene that focuses mainly on Picard and Data. The sequence
where they steal a small Romulan fighter and tear ass
around the inside of Shinzon's ship looks particularly
cool.

HIGHLIGHT TO READ SPOILERS!! And it is my sad duty to report that the rumors are true, Data does die at the end.

My impressions? This has the potential to be the best
TNG movie, and one of the best Trek films ever. Picard
is finally given a nemesis worthy of himself, himself?
I know the clone thing will rub a lot of people the
wrong way, but Logan handles it well. You have a lot
of sympathy for Shinzon, even hoping at the end that
he might be turned to the light side, (sorry i'm
mixing my franchises). The script is full of humor and
action, and should be entertaining to Trekkers and
normal moviegoers a like.

I also got to meet Marina Sirtis on the lot, and let
me tell you, she is still hot!

This is Yossarian, signing off.

Thanks, man. Anything else you can send along for TREK fans to geek out on would be greatly appreciated.

"Moriarty" out.

Whoa baby! The only thing Yossarian didn't mention was the flashback scene where Warf and Riker are in the Starfleet Academy Boathouse and find out just how much they have in common.

I don't want to sound like one of those smarmy, know-it-all assholes, but both those spoilers have been out for quite awhile now.

Guess I should have reported them or something. I assumed everyone here already knew.

    Re: spoiler question.

    by westrum

I'm a former Star Trek geek. Way back in middle school when the Next Generation was new, I saw 'em all...and I remember them all pretty damned well. From what I got out of the series finale, that whole future thing was some sort of bizarre fantasy...remember, Q had that weird anomalie growing bigger and bigger the further you go into the past, and Picard goes into the past to see the first microscopic life on earth being destroyed by the (now) massive space anomalie. So I took everything from that episode as being wiped (excepting the 'present' time line) because of their actions to destroy the anomalie-thingie.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Spoiler Question

    by gapdragon

I read in another spoiler review that Data tries to imprint his positronic net on B-9 to fix his meager intellectual capacity, seemingly to no effect. But at the end of the film, B-9 shows signs of developing Data's skills, through unconsciously singing a song Data sang at the wedding. So is Data really dead forever? Reset button, baby!

The Enterprise D was in that future too, so

    by drath

with Generations blatantly destroying that ship(almost immediately after we saw its future self in the last episode of the series) are we REALLY surprised they would kill off Data? This isn't Babylon 5 where they actually foreshadow things when they take trips to the future. That future was irrelevant before it was even shown. No glimpse of the future on Star Trek will ever come to pass because that would require someone *planning* the course of the Trek universe. Star Trek has never been written that way. It would be a nice change, but I wouldn't want Braga doing it. Hell, on Voyager he loved rewriting the past as much as ignoring the frequent visions of the future. The way that show ended, the entire Star Trek universe should have been destroyed in a time space paradox. Expecting or trying to explain continuity on Trek at this point is to invite brain damage. That's why Braga writes in a time bubble that doesn't acknowledge past or future(I think he's Future Guy on Enterprise, doing his best to destroy Trek forever!) Ah, that rant felt good. Being a geek doesn't pay anymore.

C'mon, as long as it's under Berman and his motley crew, you know that it's not going to be worth much. I will see this one time just like all the rest of them since Star Trek VI.

    by murray-clack

I read these spoilers months ago on www.DARKHORIZONS.com. Here is another tid-bit about data dying

***SPOILER BEGIN*** Yes, he does die in an explosion while saving Picard (due to techinical difficulty, the Enterprise can only beam one back). However, before Data meets his demise, he transmits all the data (no pun intended) from his positronic brain into B-9 who is on the Enterprise. Even though Data's body dies, his essence/memories etc. are now in B-9, and now Frankenstein, errr... Data continues to live ***END SPOILER***

Because Data has been SO underused in this franchise. I hope he sings at some point. Someone please tell me he sings, or at least comments drily on "humor" or "love" or other traits of human behavior to ironic effect. That would be great.

Data living on in B-9 is a potentially good thing...

    by the praetor

if the original Data has his emotion chip installed when he "dies." Therefore, Data loses the ability to feel and has no chance of ever regaining that which he lost.

  • That would set up the great scene were everyone is playing poker and the cat (Spot?) is wearing Data's visor and dealing cards. It'd be great I tell ya.

    All Good Things

    by mophstymeo

The future that we saw in All Good Things was undone by Picard's telling the crew what happened. That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at AGT is to remember that that future may very well have just been a Q-construct. Q was testing Picard; who knows if that was really what was *supposed* to happen in the future.

And as for Trek not being like Babylon 5. Thank-fucking-God!

    by daph26

As for the big "surprise" that they're killing off Data, it shouldn't be a shock to any Star Trek fan. Brent Spiner has said on many occaisions that he wouldn't do all the movies because at some point he would just be too old and Data is an android....ANDROIDS DON'T AGE.

    The 'All Good Things' future

    by ciggy

I don't know if they dropped it, but early script reviews of the film had a nod toward the future foretold in 'All Good Things' with Geordi dating a divorced Leah Brahms (The script had her at the first wedding reception) but since I haven't heard anything about Susan Gibney returning to the role, I presume either she couldn't/wouldn't do it or the role was written out. As for Data's demise - Its the return of that big fat red button marked 'RESET'. Incidentally - Anyone notice how this report doesn't actually 'say' anything? It just reiterates all the stuff leaking out onto the net over the last few months. Oh, and anyone else think that Tom Hardy's costume makes Shinzon look like a pre-pubescent?

i have hope for this script, but for future movies, why not bring harve bennett back on board? he's responsible for some great work in the past. what's he doing these days?

Nothing new here, same synopsis bullshit of a few months ago.

    by spacesheik

Harry says he's heard of Stuart Baird problems with the cast and crew - that would have been a better story than this synopsis - that we all read ages ago with spoilers and all. Personally, I hope they ante up the action sequences, eliminate the usual juvenile TNG humor and get dark and nasty la a 'First Contact.' And for Heaven's sake, I hope Rick Berman leaves the composer alone - it's time we had a rousing, bombastic score to a Trek film.

    ***MORE SPOILERS HERE***

    by general_zod

These come from www.trekweb.com, who has been far, far more up to date on Nemesis news than AICN has been...Basically, the reason why Lwaxana Troi isn't at the wedding is because she has died. Wil Wheaton gets a cameo, as does Whoopi Goldberg and Kate Mulgrew. Reports indicate that Mulgrew (as Admiral Janeway) gets a couple of cool dialogue scenes with Picard. Last I heard, Geordi is with Leah Brahms and she does make an appearance at the Alaskan get-together. Also, the slightly-tomboyish-but-hot chick from Starship Troopers and Ron Perlman both are in this film (Perlman being the Viceroy to Shinzon). From what has been reported, the action is very 'in-your-face' almost non-stop, which is about damn time. Data does die at the end, after saving Picard on a Romulan Scimitar (ship). There you have it.

    by pololcan

Ok give Star Trek a break here. First of all there is nothing wrong with Voyager or Enterprise. Anyone stick around long enough to see the last season of Voyager, yes it took a little while but they finally made that show worthy of Trek. Darn purists, go away and let the rest of us enjoy life. The Easter Bunny is too real, and so is Santa.
And as for this future debate. Well lets infringe upon another franchise for a moment and remember that "hard to see the future is, always in motion." Hmmmm now with a little bit of logic; becareful now this can hurt, we might realize that maybe just maybe there is no certainty with the future. THink about it, every single choice you make changes your future. Do I drink a sprite, or maybe a coke, red shirt, blue shirt????
Wow, I have way too much time on my hands, whats all your excusses???????
