SPOILER ALERT !!

X-FILES 9.10 FAQ

What’s it called?

“Provenance.”

Who’s responsible?

Teleplay is credited to Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz.

What does TV GuideSay?

“The spacecraft Scully once investigated in Africa figures into this two-part story, which opens with an apparent fatality during an illegal border crossing into Idaho.”

Is TV Guide lying to us again?

It is. The border crossing is actually into North Dakota.

What else isn’t TV Guide telling us?

The guy crossing the border is carrying paper printed in the same sort of language that adorned the African spacecraft.

Remind us of what was so special about the African spacecraft?

It was millions of years old, according to radiometric readings. Local translators indicated its markings were excerpts from the Bible, the Koran, and the periodic table of elements, among other things.

The big news?

There’s a similar, buried spacecraft buried beneath an isolated part of Alberta. The border-crosser is actually an FBI agent Reyes knows; he’s been working deep undercover the last six months investigating a UFO cult. He soon turns up at Scully’s place, trying to smother Baby William with a pillow.

The bigger news?

The same FBI guy conveyed to his superiors shocking news about Spooky.

The biggest news?

There’s dramatic proof that the spacecraft has something to do with William.

Do the Exposition Boys, er, the Lone Gunmen turn up?

They do, and they play a bigger role than usual this week.

Are they in the company of Jimmy and/or Yves?

Of course not.

What’s good?

The show always seems at its best when, as in this episode, the bad guys come gunning for a regular.

What’s not so good?

This series loves to drop intriguing clues, but - unlike “Alias” or “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” - still seems completely rudderless when it comes to introducing dramatically satisfying resolutions.

Is Mulder coming back?

For a look beyond this episode, highlight the inviso-text: If you’re one of the few who hasn’t heard by now, David Duchovny is set to return in May’s series finale.

How does it end, spoiler boy?

With the Gunmen – and a gunwoman.

  • The X-Files is starting over in syndication around here, and last night was the premiere episode. You know, it's too bad that the show wore out its welcome after the sixth season or so. The first few seasons really frighten me...bigtime. Scully looks hot before she became a real mother, and Mulder looks like a skinny Ivy League fresh FBI agent. The stories were some we haven't seen before. I believe that the X-Files was the biggest scifi cop drama on tv. But when the show grew in age, it became obvious and not spooky. But I do plan on remaining faithful and watch the remaining episodes. From what the previews show, it looks like the end is finally coming and it looks awesome. I already have season 2 on DVD, and I plan on getting 1, 3, 4, and maybe 5 later on.

X-Files really going anywhere? HELP ME!

    by filmreel99

So... I was a huge fan of the show. Last season was terrible. Wanted to vomit on my remote. I dont even really want to watch the show anymore but I do in some twisted religious devoted kind of way. I've seen every episode... missing one would be devistating (although I admit to not seeing the end of the Lord of the Flies episode... it was too painful to see it suck). The X-Files just isnt what it used to be in the first 5 seasons before it got way too humerous and lost its dark edge and before Mulder left. The show was all about that duo. I get that great loving feeling again whenever I watch the dvds. Those were some great episodes. The best tv series ever. Well, was. Now Monica "Latino" Reyes and Doggett are so annoying. Especially Reyes. And Scully is just sitting in the corner pretending to be in the show. All I'm saying is that for the past two years.. maybe even three or four... I have been waiting for the show to get somewhere... whats up with this space-ship? Whatever happened to the black oil and aliens... where did the coucil of old men go?... where are those faceless soldiers?... what about the clones?... the spine-reproducing aliens?... the purity control project?... the bounty hunter?... Krycek?... the super soldiers?...where the hell is the show?????? So, all I want is for this episode to be great. Like the ones back in Canada. I want the show to end on a nice high note. String all these ideas together before I get too mad. WHERE IS THE SHOW GOING? If someone can help me out and support me or tell me I'm wrong, either way would be comforting.

    by magic_ninja

yep, that's right. i was always hoping for the episode where he'd kick the shit out of candy ass Mulder, but it never happened. I hate Annabeth Gish's character though. Can't stand her. Too bad X-Files doesn't have any nudity, then I'd like her better. Maybe.

    Which final episodes to watch

    by prof. pop-cult

If you're interested in keeping up with the show till its end, but only want to watch the episodes tied to the mytharc, then after next week's conclusion, Episode 17, which is directed by David Duchovny (but not featuring Mulder), will involve Baby William -- being put up for adoption (?). Then Episodes 19 and 20 will comprise the finale which FOX will air as a two-hour movie. No word on the Net yet regarding whether Episodes 16 and 18 are single-standing storylines or tied to the mytharc. For those who loved The Lone Gunmen spinoff, Episode 15 will be a Lone Gunmen ep featuring Jimmy and Yves. It will also answer what happened in the cliffhanger of their series.

    Grrr.

    by tesarta

I realize it must be something like a doctor being forced to watch ER, or a police officer being forced to watch NYPD Blue, but every time there's a show that has to do with the Bible I get very, very annoyed. It's been well over a hundred years since scholars realized that each of the texts of the Bible, even of the Pentateuch and the Gospels, were written over a long period of time or include the work of multiple authors. This is even granted as being true by the Catholic Church, after Vatican II, so to argue that Scully would have a particularly sola scriptura/Protestant concept of the Bible is ludicrous. But, apparently, both she and her mother have operated under the assumption that God stuck the words of the Bible into the heads of the writers - which is no longer Catholic teaching. Grrr. And then the Q'uran! Give me a break. It is well documented that the Q'uran developed out of individually recorded writings and was subsequently collected (for the most part) according to length. I am annoyed. I am a geek, but I am annoyed nevertheless.

How was this week's KING OF THE HILL new?

    by kiyone

This episode, where Peggy sets up a phony off-track betting parlor in a motel room to trick a con man, was shown in December or January, yet FOX called it a "new" episode in the trailers. Was this one that was preempted on FOX by football, but shown on GLOBAL or NTV in Canada 9where I am), 'cause I have it on tape? ________________________________ Also, it is pretty pointless to write messages condeming FIRST posters to be fucked up their stupid asses since most of the "First!" posts with little other text are taken down these days.

  • I am not even going to try to explain what's good and what's not about the XF return. Oh, maybe I will say one thing: It's definately going back to the hardcore Scully kicking ass version and Lone Gunmen getting into trouble. This = old style XF. It's too bad that those who *cry* over spilt milk can't get over the fact that a show is just a show. If you don't like it anymore, don't repeat yourself in these talkbacks every week. Because I am a *faithful* and *crassless* fan, I will watch it to the very end no matter what, and none of you can do anything about it! Ha! ____--KNEEL--____

Relax. I know everything you are saying about the Bible and Koran, but I can tell you from a scientists POV they never get that right either. Here are three ways to deal with it: 1) Bang you head against a keyboard and decry the writers as being imbeciles; 2) Sit back, relax, and accept that some aspects of reality have to be fiddled with for the sake of the story; or 3) Understand that everything you have learned is part of a great conspiracy by the US Government to hide the fact that all of mankinds greatest achievements were given to us by a race of aliens millions of years ago. Except Spam. That we did make.

    X-Files: Special Victims Unit

    by dlhstar

Let me start by saying I've never been a watcher of the X-Files. Now, with that being said I can only wonder if the series would have done better to create a spinoff with Patrick and Gish (call it X-Files: Independent Operations, or the like) and do a slew of non-arc cases (which people tell me have been the bulk of the last few years since they've come on, anyway) and allow the original show to attempt to do the arc stories. Maybe once a year pull a crossover or a special Gunmen-centric episode.

Gillian Anderson is Beautiful (part II)

    by ncontrol

And I admit that she's one of the few reasons I still watch this show. I'm glad the three gunmen didn't die. Yet. I'm glad the show's about to end (with closure, Carter! We need CLOSURE!!!) And I'll be first one in line to buy tickets to another X Files movie two years from now.
    P.S. She's a terrific actress, too.

    Good, not great.

    by lobanhaki

But I loved seeing Scully tear into this guy as he tried to kill Scully's baby, and that they had the guts to have her so mad at the guy that she's willing to let him die without medical care if he doesn't tell her why he tried to kill her son. That's what you call emotional involvement.

  • Or else, there's still a shitload he hasn't revealed to us yet. Kind of like God maybe? Well, obviously CC thinks he's God in the X-Files loonyverse, but he's still a fucking hack-writer. Comic book stories have more consistency and internal logic than this series. (Muslims must simply LOVE Carter for what he implies about holy scripture--including the Qu'ran--with this BS on the spaceship. I suppose we'll also learn that Gabriel or Allah or whoever revealed the Word of Allah to Muhammad was an alien too, just so they can say it was all planned out millions of years ago.) I just know Carter's going to give us a "God is really a conglomeration of aliens who seeded Earth with their genetic soup" bullshit. If that's the case, however, why didn't these brainy aliens see fit to NOT give us benighted humans consistent or complementary holy revelations that don't clash? Or do they enjoy watching us tear ourselves apart over religious differences? Aaaaahhh, that must be it. We're here on Earth for the entertainment of the galaxy. Kind of like the Jerry Springer show.

why are you singling out muslims? the ship didn't just contain scripture from the Qu'ran, but every religious text... so what's your point? what's the big deal about the show implying that aliens put us here? it is a science fiction show about aliens so again... what's your point?

GreatOne - what "Church" are you referring to?

    by iontyre

I have the official Catholic edition Bible (New American translation), including official notes and references. It clearly and repeatedly indicates the Gospels were written mostly after 70 A.D. and even as late as 140 A.D., and by multiple authors who were probably scholars who followed the namesakes of the individual books. It continually amazes me how screwed up people are about the Catholic Church!
