From Norway comes Koola's look at ICE AGE!!!

Published at:  Mar 01, 2002 8:38:41 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here.. ICE AGE is almost here and it only makes sense that way up in Norway we'd find an early look at the impending ICE AGE!!! Koola has been reporting for us for quite some time now and he's back with a glimpse at the goings ons between them wacky varmits from long ago....

Hey Harry!

I am so god damn happy. Koola the Norwegian strikes back. I mean,
delightful pinapple and juicy strawberries, I was the luckiest guy in Oslo
the other day. Got to attend an early screening of ICE AGE. And here it
comes in a l-o-n-g
time. Here comes my review:

ICE AGE is a really goodfelt and creative piece of pure and gifted
animation. It's CGI allright, but still lively in the most Pixar-esque way
you could imagine. I mean, one would fear, at least I did, before going
into this film that they cannot, and should not, be in any way similar to
what Pixar creates. But hell, this film, is just as fun and witty as Pixar-
creations, and still a totally different and independent style. Sure ICE
AGE wil remind you of both Disney and Pixar, but my biggest fear, that it
would be unoriginal and cliché, was luckily put to rest. ICE AGE is a
fantastic joy!

Probably everone has seen the trailer by now with the
funnylooking animal who passionately cares about his nut, and by trying to
hide it in the ice causes the whole thing to break.... crack... and so he‚s
stepped on by a mammoth and Ice, ice Baby plays... y‚know the trailer? Well,
without the Vanilla Ice-theme; That is the opening-sequence of the film!
Really funny! It sets the tone for the film, and from there we are treated
to a clever-written, beautifully told road-moviethingee (reminds me of the
Dinosaur-plot) with a mammoth, a sabretooth, a baby and this unidentified
animal Sid the Sloth. These four characters on a journey to deliver the
baby to it's human tribe. Ok, so that does not sound like one hell of a
script, but it all lies in the scenes, the great voicetalents (Hallelujah
for the sabretooth-Denis Leary. Fantastic!) and the in-jokes concerning the
animals views on themself in the ICE AGE ("Global warming? Like that's ever
gonna happen..."). And also really fun jokes about animals and humans ("Come
on... you know humans can't talk!"). All this and more (in ICE AGE there is a
slide-scene through tunnels inside the ice, in MONSTERS INC there was the
door-swapping-scene) ends up being this film.... ICE AGE, that lives up to
the fantastically cool trailer. Actually, the film is undescribably funny.

Sure there's some things that don‚t work so well, for example how the
humans look and some pacing-problems (eventhough the movie is no more than
80 minutes). But overall: REALLY FUN FILM!!!!!

    Ice Ages

    by rev_skarekroe

We're actually heading for another Ice Age. Global warming might delay the inevitable, but past planetary weather cycles show that we're due. Europe should be getting colder much sooner, since global warming is actually changing the ocean currents. I for one would like to see the coming Ice Age herald the return of the great megafauna that once roamed across the earth. The great Irish Elk. The majestic Mastodon. Volkswagen sized armadillos. Just imagine... What's that? The movie? Looks like fun, I'll see it. sk

    by mr. nice guy

Though Cinescape reported it almost a week ago, Sean Connery is officially signed on to the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. Pass it on.

    Unidentified animal.

    by key_card

I believe it's a sloth. Hence the name Sid THE SLOTH.

I wonder what the creature, called sid the SLOTH (!!) could be. Oh well he is from Norway, language barriers I guess and somebody has probably beaten me to pointing this out anyway. I have a feeling this will be better than Dinosaur but not much. Dunno why.

I think that what Koola was referring to was...

    by terry_1978

that the audience knows that Sid is a sloth, but the characters in the movie have no idea what the hell he is.

    "What the hell are YOU?"

    by wardog

"Oh, I'm a giant sloth. You can call me Sid!"
***************************************** I'd rather call you---LUNCH!" ------- So, are we to understand that one of the main characters is never identified by name? Kind of silly, if you ask me. Like never hearing Valeria's name in Conan the Barbarian.

Nice to know there is a fellow Gentleman out there who agrees with me. I just hope they don't cast him as Nemo, get an Indian guy instead.

    by the_pissboy1

Christ, the reviewers on this site grow more inane by the day. "unidentified animal Sid the Sloth"...has this tree-toad not heard of a sloth? Did he think it was just one of the Seven Deadly Sins (I'm guessing he only knows those from fincher's opus to mood lighting and audience stupidity)?

    Check your facts people

    by zeroeffect

Have any of you people actually seen the trailer? The animal in question is clearly not a sloth, regardless of that statement. If any body would bother to check the website of the movie, it is quite plainly stated what this cute fury little bastard is. (here's a hint - not a sloth) So don't be so god damned fast to flame the guy who is doing you all a service.

    concerning the "sid the sloth"-problem

    by koola_norway

I can see there's been a lot of comments on the fact that i presented Sid the Sloth in the review as an unidentified animal. You were right, I actually don't know what that means in english, and the creature (the sloth) appears as somewhat unreal in ICE AGE. So therefore i had no chance identifying his animal-belonging. And yes, my english certainly is quite limited. But hey, at least I've seen the movie. Look forward to it... :)

    by spiderblood1969

I'm not looking forward to this because it reminds me alot of Dinosaur which I thought was pretty boring.
Still I'll probably see it on video.

ICE AGE meets DINOSAURS by way of SHREK

    by tomvee

Will this be more like DINOSAURS or SHREK? Big difference, there (assuming you all agree DINOSAURS stinks while SHREK rules). The initial previews look like a combination of both.

    I've seen this film also

    by olemak

In fact, I attended the same viewing of Ice Age last week as well. It's absolutely OK, and got quite a few laughs and giggles from the audience. Which was mostly jouralists etc, who don't usually laugh a lot during viewings.

What I found striking about Ice Age, though, is that it doesn't behave like a CGI move. It's more like - it's just an animated feature that just happens to be made with computers. The characters sorta look and "feel" like traditional animation... Pretty strong sign that CGI is growing up, I guess.

    Ice Age

    by moviestud_2000

I was lucky enough to see a screening of ICE AGE last week. I have to agree fully with this review. I think I laughed more during this movie then I did during Monsters, Inc. The CG animation isn't exactly in the same class as Pixar, but it was quite good. The story was very funny. I think I laughed more then my 7 year old daughter did. definately worth your $8.
