S-Wall Raves about RULES OF ATTRACTION!!!

Published at:  Mar 01, 2002 8:23:57 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Just finished shooting a bit with Liquid News here at the hotel, told them how excited I was about this film.... These reviews are just kicking my ass and making me wish I had been in Orange yesterday (and that is really saying something). Liquid News is also going to be at the Borders this evening at 6:30 around Oxford Street here in London. So, till then mates... I leave you with another rave!!!!

-Harry-LONG LONG time reader first time poster, I too have a review of last night's Rules of Attraction screening.I just felt inclined to write my own review in regards to "Rules" because there has been slack that this site is biased to this movie.Well let me tell all of you it is not. This movie truly rocked my world-it should not be altered.I desperately yearned for more.I want to completely make this spoiler free.I drove two hours from the San Feranando Valley to Orange last night dreading every moment of the drive praying that this movie would be remotely as good as I had heard and hoped it would be.It was better.

First off Van derBeek can kiss Dawson goodbye it's all about Sean Bateman.Shannyn Soosamon is a revelation as Lauren. She is heartbreaking and an extreme hottie who can act her ass off contrary to what you may have thought in "A Knight's Tale". Ian Somerhalder as Paul is not the revelation that the other two leads are.I enjoyed his homosexual friends and his tryst in a hotel more than him.I would have liked to have seen more of his friends who were far more charismatic than Somerhalder. He's fine so it doesn't hold the story back.Kip Pardue looked like he had a great and hysterical time in Europe (and shows all ladies).Fred Savage is an adult who can act-that's quite an interesting discovery.Where has he been.Clifton Collins was good but it felt a little long.I LOVED the hospital sequence, the hotel sequence, the European sequence, the suicide- I would have loved even more of these sequences and characters.

Roger Avary has taken an exceptional young cast that will all be the new stars of tomorrow.Every single character has an amazing actor. This film far surpasses the book. One of Avary's best skills was his casting and kudos to the casting director. Some of the amazing supporting cast from "American Pie","Buffy","Seventh Heaven" , and "But I'm A Cheerleader" prove they have the chops to act in the big leagues with the right material.

On the other hand, we saw the film projected on video and it still looked great. I can't wait to see it on film. Mr. Avary, however uses some backwards filming in the beginning-while interesting and beautifully done need to be sped up desperately instead of in SLOW motion. Otherwise, the pacing of this film is perfect and I too implore Lion's Gate to NOT CUT A FRAME.Don't be scared of a great piece of material and then you and Mr.Avary could all be at the Oscars next year..

Also, if memory serves me correctly during the on set visits they were shooting a large cafeteria sequence?Where was it and how can I see it? Bring it back cause I want more of this great film. Finally, something good in 2002.

S-Wall I hope your having a good trip.

    No Oscars

    by rockridge

The lovebombing has started on this, but it sure as hell doesn't sound like Oscar material. Who'd have thought a film with James Van Der Beek, Kip Pardue and Fred Savage would be such edgy cinema? I'm definitely looking forward to this. American Psycho is a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine, so this should make up for the abyss of creativity that will be American Psycho 2.

It's Clare Kramer who played Glory/Glorificus in season 5. I haven't read the book but I loved Glamorama, Rules Of Attratction is now on my must-read list.

    by eat_your_peas

This is a review? Descriptions of scenes that make no damn sense to me. Fred Savage can act? Tell me why he does such a good job. Why does that chick from A Knight's Tale do a good job in this movie? Am I missing something? I guess I at least get the sense that the review thought it will be a great movie. I'm interested.

It's getting a little nauseating how much in love you are with Roger "Hack" Avary.

What is AICN's fixation on this movie?

    by tom sutpen

It seems like every time I drop by AICN, someone is singing the praises of "The Rules of Attraction". And always using the same phrases: 'VanDerBeek's breakout role'; 'the stars of tomorrow', 'look out Oscars'. In fact, the more assurances I hear that this site isn't in the tank for this movie, the more convinced I am that it is.

Clare Krammer rocks and I'm going to band some serious heads if she has a bad part in the film, you know seeing how her character in the book had about once sentence of dialogue

    by eat_your_peas

That's some funny shit!! Does Fred Savage still do that annoying one eye blink he used to do in The Wonder Years? I got to the point when I used to watch that show that I wanted to hit ole Fred upside the head with a brick, just to stop THE ONE EYED BLINKING!!!

Notice the little part above about the multi-oscar nominated actors. That explains Midnight Cowboy somewhat. Face it, RULES OF ATTRACTION will rock, but with a cast usually reserved for another rehashed Miramax teen movie, it will be overlooked regardless. Again, can't their be designated 'whips' of some sort in the Oscar Committee? Works well enough in our nation's government. Perhaps these psuedo-film lovers should at least be forced to view every movie which finds its way on a "best of" list. Sigh, I give up.

    by montgomery burns

I don't give a damn about the rest of the piss poor 'review' but just the phrase "Shannon Sausageman can act her ass off" made me laugh a lot! Dude you think she reads this and wants to do you now? She's damn fine but only eye candy filler likes most chicks in movies sad to say. Harry you suck ass for putting lame ass reivews like this on your site!

    SHANNON

    by tomvee

If Shannon S. can act, so can Shannon Elizabeth. And we know Shannon Elizabeth cannot act -- which doesn't really matter considering her amazing breasts. All I know is i wanted to take a pair of pruning shears to Shannon S.'s hair in KNIGHT. Her breasts held no interest by comparison.

Man, there's a guy you don't want to get a headbutt from. Look at him!And that chin! No doubt in such a saucy movie as this he'll be putting it in afew promiscuous positions as a guy with such a chin should.

    by dannyocean01

Can everyone do that. Please. If it wasn't for aicn I would never have had a chance to get even remotely excited by this film. It's for films like this and the enthusiasm in which they are treated that I keep coming back. If you whiners are the fanboys who wank on about LOTR then I really despair.

    by disappear here

I'll reserve my usual bitch about how good the book is, but I urge all you guys, fucking read it! it kicks as yet untold levels of ass. The movie looks set to be pretty good. I have this sinking feeling that over here in Australia the various idiots who control such things are probably going to promote it as a wacky American Pie-style teen comedy, but, y'know, I'll live. But yeah. Seriously. Read the fucking book!!!!! It's cool.
