Published at:  Jun 27, 1998 12:00:00 AM CDT

This was sent in from a spy that follows the movings of the coolest from Hong Kong Cinema (btw the Hard Boiled DVD is amazing) Once again the news focuses on the triumverate of cool, Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and John Woo. At the same time I'm sure many of you read the Variety news this past week about Jet Li's signing with Warner Brothers. Meanwhile, I'd love for someone to fill me in on what's going on with Tsui Hark, who's Chinese Ghost Story I adore deeply, just wish I had the score to that one. Well on to the news...

Most of this is from Wolverine's news of the week.
big thing on the remake of God of Cookery (the original kicks ass) -- Jim
Carrey has expressed interest, but naturally won't commit until he's read a
script. They've hired the star and uncredited director of the original,
Stephen Chiau, to direct the remake.
This bit's mainly quoted directly, but, since they have a tendancy to use
real and pet names, which we don't recognize, I've cleared as many as I can
up.

Chow Yun Fat News

"The manager of Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and John Woo, Terence Chang
revealed a series of good news which proves the successes of Hong Kong film
people in Hollywood. Chang expressed that Chow Yun Fat will star in the new
King
and I. The film company is interested in casting Emma Thompson as the
lead actress." (me -- Woohoo! Best pairing since Cary Grant and Katherine
Hepburn) The film will begin production in the latter half of the year.
Chow will shave his head to play the late Yul Brynner's role and the film
will shoot in Australia. After completing The Corruptor, Mr. and Mrs. Chow
will return to Hong Kong and rest.

Michelle Yeoh News

"As for Michelle Yeoh, earlier she met with Steven Spielberg about the
fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series with Harrison Ford. Besides
that film, Yeoh next year will perform in Ang Lee's Ngor Fu Chong Lung
(Lit: Lying Tiger Hidden Dragon) (earlier reports had her with Jet Li) and a
romance for MGM.

As for rumors that Yeoh starring in Columbia's Vertical Limit or the film
version of Charlie's Angels, Chang refuted them all by saying the former's
shoot in the Himalayas is too dangerous and the latter is a flower vase role
and doesn't have much room for acting.

John Woo News

Chang expressed that John Woo currently has 6 films in preparation, one of
which is The Last Word starring Paul Newman and Harrison Ford. As for Chow
Yun-Fat's King's Ransom, the script is still being written. He also has two
collaborations with Tom Cruise, the sequel to Mission: Impossible will begin
production in October, and a Chinese costume film Tai Ping Tin Gok (Lit:
Peaceful Heavenly Nation), a spy film
with Nicholas Cage Black September, a World War II Romance and a France
period piece.
