HERC's Seen The Last ROSWELL Till Spring!!

Published at:  Feb 26, 2002 2:30:18 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Roswell 3.14 FAQ

What’s this week’s episode called?

“Chant Down Babylon.”

Why?

It’s from the Bob Marley song Maria plays at one point. Also? A friend of Jesse’s coincidentally quotes from it, warning the young lawyer to be careful of whom he trusts when it’s “time to chant down Babylon and destroy the plans of wicked men.”

Who’s responsible?

Teleplay is credited to “Star Trek” vet Ronald D. Moore (“I Married An Alien”).

What does TV Guide say?

“Michael, Jesse and Valenti call on a discredited doctor to help the wounded Isabel. Also, Clayton Wheeler (Jack Donner) undergoes an amazing transformation and soon finds himself drawn to Liz; and Jesse quizzes Michael about Isabel's alien roots. Meris Wheeler: Morgan Fairchild.”

So the old billionaire will turn into Max, right?

Right.

And Jesse finally learns of his wife’s alien heritage, right?

Right. Michael spills the beans when Iz catches a MetaChem bullet and Jesse wants to take her to the emergency room.

Is Jesse pissed?

Fairly pissed. It bugs him how good a liar she is, and he wonders if he can ever trust her. “There is no Isabel Evans. She’s just this person you hide behind.”

Is Liz back in Roswell this week?

No. Liz spends the entire episode in New England.

Is Maria back in Roswell this week?

No. Maria spends the entire episode in New England.

Does Wheeler go to New England?

Yep. When Wheeler discovers Max Evans is in his head, he realizes Liz is keeping Max tethered to the living world. Bad things happen in Vermont.

What is TV Guide not telling us?

The first time we see Wheeler (in the first act), he looks exactly like Maxwell Evans. And the Morgan Fairchild character is pretty excited about it.

TV Guide says Jack Donner plays Wheeler!

Donner’s is not a speaking part this week. He face appears for perhaps two seconds, tops.

What’s good?

It’s another big episode for plot and pacing. Liz and Max both get to see their lives flash before their eyes. And we get to see Kyle try to use superpowers to heal Isabel!

What’s not so good?

There’s a ludicrously staged climactic chase scene. Plus? “Roswell” goes on hiatus after tonight and won’t be back with season three’s last four hours until springtime.

How does it end, spoiler boy?

In Vermont.

How about a link to that post about “how ‘Roswell’ ends”?

Okay.

Herc’s rating for “Roswell” 3.14?

    Smallville Salad

    by niaiserie

Was that lame lil bit of dialogue with the Smallville Salad and Roswell hotdogs or whatever included? If that's the kind of stuff that passed for clever on this show, I don't feel so bad about having missed it. But props to UPN for taking a chance on it.

    This season

    by keekel77

First, I like the little Smallville/Roswell banter. It shows self-depreciation which is always funny. But what I wanted to say was...

Does anyone else think that after two great seasons, Roswell has been floundering a little? This season they haven't had a story arch to speak of... everytime you thought you were getting one (e.g., Max's dad getting all James Bond-y), it was dropped. And this whole "save my nasty old husband" thing came out of nowhere...

    I'm all for self-deprecating humor...

    by niaiserie

...it's just I would of hoped for a little more subtlety or wit than simply adding a type of food to the end of a television show's names. But eh, it's nitpicking.

I'm surprised that this got 3 stars from Herc. I thought it

    by imafreakingtroll

And don't tell me that was the old man doing it. That was Max getting control of his body back and killing the only thing that the old man loved. The rest was the old man getting revenge on Max by killing the only person Max loved. This show jumped the shark the middle of last season with the last episode the Michael and his "granddaughter" episode. It has been downhill ever since then. Only last weeks and this weeks episodes have been any good. Too little too late though.

  • Dark Horizons.com reports that William Sadler(outstanding actor)has stated that the show is not being cancelled but is instead getting an overhaul, probably to let Jason Katims return to his first season style of not letting company execs interfere with the shows' contents. HEY, UPN IF YOUR LISTENING GO BACK TO SEASON 1 STYLE AND WHEN YOUR NOT AIRING NEW EPISODES PROMOTE THE SHOW WITH OLD SEASON 1&2 EPISODES, THE PROBLEM IS ROSWELL ISN'T AND HASN'T BEEN GETTING ENOUGH PROMOTION ON EITHER NETWORKS, UPN OR WB, LIKE buffy or smallville DID. ROSWELL NEEDS MORE EXPOSURE TO THE PUBLIC OF IT'S CORE ESSENCE WHICH IS MOST VISIBLE IN SEASON 1. Tonights episode sounds really good from what I hear from Herc and our Canadian counterparts who have already seen this episode, I hear that it's REALLY the EPISODE to WATCH.
    LONG LIVE ROSWELL!

    As If.....

    by computerguy68

I would watch that fucking show!! Those rotten ads were enough for me. Goodby UPN, good job Les, you get to fuck up another network. Watch them show Surivor repeats after another crappy episode of Star Drek: The Next Shitty Generation. Guess I'll switch over to The WB and watch Smallville, and tape 24. This was a good ep. btw.

    jump the shark

    by sokitome

This show is so bad now it's pathetic. Cmon, the chase scene was stupid, the end fight was stupid, and the beginning was stupid cuz the bad guys got away when michael has proven he can blow up cars and stuff. This show is so inconsistent. THe first two years were fantastic and UPN has fucked it all up. The only good thing about this episode was that William Sadler FInally had some lines. He was one of the best things about the show and severely under used.

Herc, this was at least FOUR star worthy

    by twig

SUPER ep. Loved seeing Morgan Fairchild killed(nothing personal, she's just a wretched actress). Loved seeing Liz as a grumpy drunk. The chase scene wasn't ludicrous. UPN, don't just euthanize this show. As If? Why must this soon-to-be-a-failure show bump Roswell off?

    awesome show last night

    by hallapal

hard to beleive that they could want to shelf such a great show. I agree the first part of the season has kinda been lacking but the last few episodes have totally rocked. UPN needs to wake up - try promoting the show - show reruns for new fans - you do it for Buffy - try after Enterprise heck put a second showing on CBS it is way better than most of the stuff on CBS now anyways

    Great episode last night

    by parnellbc

I feel like the last few episodes, minus the 60's sitcom spoof, have been very good. There has been character development by nearly all characters. The Valenti's seem to be getting the shortest end of the deal. Although it was good to see Jim get some time this week. Personally I like the fact that this show this season has about 3 main arcs going. I see those as A)Mr.Evans espionage of his kids B)Isabels married life C) Liz,Kyle,Jim and Maria trying to live life normally. At any time one may surface and another be backstory. For me this is most similar to daily life. No one theme/motive drives me every day, there are several. I truly feel that lack of equal promotion has hurt this show. It seems UPN expected everyone to watch just because it followed Buffy. They thought Angels success was due to that. Angel had ties therefore logically had carry over viewership. Being that Roswell is a sci-fi slanted show to me its natural lead should be Enterprise. Both shows have STrek ties w/writers,producers and directors. Special Unit 2 was more "Buffyesque" with demons, monsters and trolls.
Well based on the previews I don't see "As If" surviving as a successful replacement show. This just looks god-awful. Roswells only saving grace may be that this show is 'dead-on-arrival' and therefore makes Roswell even more appealing. Should Roswell survive UPN needs to run a night of classic Roswell to encourage newcomers to the show and reinvigorate those who still watch.

    LONG LIVE ROSWELL INDEED.

    by seth maxim

That was an awesome episode. The show really does seem to be regaining it's momentum. It got off to a, well to be blunt a fucked up start, but since that ROSWELL episode, written by the "ROSWELL HIGH" series creators, called A Tale of Two Parties the series has been really good. Last night's episode really should have gotten 4 stars. To the people who watch this show like me you need to voice your concerns, ideas, and complaints to UPN like I do. Go to there website and email them or write a letter. Tell them to let Jason Katims run the show the way he want's to like he did the first season. Tell them to promote the show for god's sake. Tell them to put it after Star Trek or on monday nights. Tell them to create that enviroment of fun so the actors feel like they did in season 1 and 2, because now they want to leave the show, I mean who would want to work 14 hours/day for 9 months straight. Let's address these problems now so that season 4 can only worry about ratings and not be blamed about not doing the show right, like this year. I mean it's getting better, but still hasn't reached the tone of season 1. Let's do something about the show that we love! LONG LIVE ROSWELL!

Roswell is the only show I watch and trully love.

    by hartsax

For anyone that feels that Roswell should be cancelled has absolutely no right to say so. The true fans would never want it cancelled. Personally, I've loved this show since the moment I started watching it. I will admit that the Tess episodes weren't the best but I never lost hope that she'd die off or something. I'm thankful she hasn't been on this season.
The main draw for me was the Max and Liz story. I mean everyone plays a huge part but the relationship that these two have is what I dream of. I thought that the recent episode was the best I've seen in quite awhile. It had a lot of what's been missing. Max lives for Liz and it was apparent during the falling from the window scene. She was the only one he saw. This show is just different than others. Dawson's Creek used to be good... in the first season. Now everyone just screws everyone else. Buffy... the whole Spike thing... not cool. Felicity: God people just let her start over with Noel! I just love how Roswell has stayed true to it's original ties. ROSWELL FOREVER!!!

Love it or hate it: You are HOOKED on ROSWELL

    by man-thing

This show has gotten better as the season has progressed and it seems to be turning into a juggernaut of a storyline leading up to what could be an amazing end-of-season cliffhanger. UPN: Do you realize what a tremendous show you have here? The ratings may not show that but how exact are the nielsen ratings? Please try this show in the time slot after Enterprise. You've never done this, so how can you be sure that it won't be a great success? UPN has had the great insight to bring ROSWELL back to life from the WB, I pray that they are willing to explore different time slots so it can find it's rightful place in the growing UPN schedule. What is amazing is how this show affects people in the negative as well as the positive. People claim to hate this show, yet they watch every episode so they can trash it! These people, whether they want to admit it or not, are ROSWELL fans! No person in their right mind would put together a web site proclaiming how much they hate something, especially a television show unless they were really truely, deep down, still in love with it! Otherwise they would just turn their back on it, never letting it affect them again. The Power of ROSWELL should not be underestimated and the passion of it's fan base is proof of that.

    ROSWELL ALIENS ROCK

    by angel 97

The episode "Chant Down Babylon" was the best Roswell of its time Liz saved Max's life. Bravo Max for killing Meris (Morgan Farechild), My friend and I couldn't stand the make out scene with her and Max it gross us out. Also I can't believe that Tess is coming back, if she is going to break up M/L again I hope Liz gets her back and kills her the same way that Tess killed Alex in season 2. I heard through the Alien Chat that "Graduation" was going to be the SERIES finale and I don't want that to happen. Last but not least man-thing is right Love it or hate it: You are HOOKED on ROSWELL
