Guillermo Del Toro to create a live-action/cgi THE WIND AND THE WILLOWS

Published at:  Feb 14, 2002 2:52:13 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... nearly a week ago we got word that Disney was contemplating making a live action WIND AND THE WILLOWS. I really just didn't trust Disney too much upon this concept until I heard from Guillermo Del Toro that he was considering it. For the past week or so, Guillermo has been talking about the possibilities in making WIND AND THE WILLOWS, and with him behind the film I think that the movie has a chance to be magical, and to not be too 'disneyed'.

>

Now this wouldn't be the next project for Guillermo, he has a couple of other projects he's working on in the meanwhile. God willing he'll next be making a HELLBOY movie and/or COFFIN.

>

His plan on WIND AND THE WILLOWS is to take the time necessary to nail the script and the design for the film, which he seems to think is a very long process for this type of project. Maybe taking as long as 3 years, though it might come together faster. The key thing to Del Toro doing WIND AND THE WILLOWS is that Guillermo is very much MR TOAD. He gets addicted to the latest technologies, the latest cool things. He gets manic over acquiring the most important things in life like the original contract that Swan had the Phantom sign in PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. Just imagine a WIND AND THE WILLOWS made with the same care that THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE was made. Could be very cool, so long as Disney stays hands off.

Dennis Hopper plays the toppered feline. Laura Dern and Kyle McLaughlan play Thing 1 and Thing 2. And people will be talking about the scene where the cat does unspeakable things to the fish aboard the Which-What-Who for years. And it's in CGI, animation, live action and has puppets!

    by terry_1978

I've read the story and seen the disney version, and it's probably one of the better fairy tale type stories I've read. If the CGI works, I wanna see Mr. Toad getting excited about his new motor car and going buck wild in his roadster.

this sounds pretty cool... but neither one of these titles needs be preempted by the Disney folks.. the whole time that i was watching "The Devil's Backbone" i was thinking of how all the scenes with the ghost actually looked liked Mignola or Huddleston drew the storyboards... these films MUST be made by Del Toro... • I admit I've been slacking off so I haven't seen any of Del Toro's movies but judging from his reputation and his taste of films he has chosen to direct, I have high hopes for The Wind In The Willows. I loved the Disney cartoon but I'm hoping this new film will be more truer to the original story and more than anything else "be alive" and has true imagination in it while being faithful to the text but not become boring and have a style all of it's own. As I said before this film is now higher on my top list of movies to see when it comes out.

    by joelove

I guess companies have been adapting novels and such for a long time, but doesn't it seem like every little piece of imaginative story from childhood is being made into a movie? The trend is getting out of hand.

What's next, an animated movie that isn't turned into an excuse to sell toys? BWAAAHAHAHAH!!! Seriously, if Disney suits DON'T stick their nose up Del Toro's ass during production, it will be another sign that the world is ending. (Britney Spears and N'Sync performing with Aerosmith at the Super Bowl was sign #4, Will Smith getting Oscar nominated for ALI was #5... yup, only two more to go... let's see.)

Terry Jones did a live-action version of Wind in the Willows...

    by giant fish

Jones held a guest lecture at my student society a few years back, and he showed us some clips of his version of Wind in the Willows, among other things. It starred himself as Mr. Toad, along with Eric Idle and Stephen Fry. Some of the imagery was quite striking, but I got the impression he wasn't very happy with it. Has anyone seen the whole thing?

I've seen the Terry Jones version

    by billbrasky2620

I checked it out on video a few years ago. It'll probably be in the "children's" section at your local Blockbuster. As I recall, Disney retitled it from Wind in the Willows into something stupid- "The Adventures of Mr. Toad" or something. It was OK, but it was one of those movies that's not really interesting enough for kids and a little too goofy for adults- kind of like Jones's "Erik the Viking" actually. There is one hilarious scene where Toad (Jones) is on trial and John Cleese is the defense lawyer and Stephen Fry is the judge. This scene recalled all the silly court sketches from Monty Python. For British comedy fans, the movie also had Steve Coogan, Julia Sawalha, Victoria Wood, and Nigel Planer in small roles.

There was a Saturday morning cartoon back in the early 70's

    by timbenzedrine

" The Reluctant Dragon and Mr. Toad Show". It was produced by Rankin-Bass with character designs by Paul Coker Jr. of MAD magazine . The animation was repetative and cheap looking, even by Saturday morning cartoon standards, and its awful tinny music still rattles around in my head even now. In fact, I'm sure that's what turned me to drugs in the first place.

Yeah Chicken Run wasn't all that remarkable. But it was Park's first attempt at a feature length film so it was never going to quite live up to his short films. If he can rediscover the form of his Wallace & Gromit days though, then I'm definitely there.

Why I hate Wind In The Willows.

    by roosterbooster

Look, it's an ALLEGORY. The weasels who take over Toad Hall are the working class (you and me, basically) who live in poverty and stage a revolution against Toad, the worthless, parasitic, upper-class moron. He regains his illicit wealth with the aid of his middle-class lackies and the weasels are reduced to snivelling servitude. Fuck this and fuck Kenneth Grahame. Didn't David Jason voice Mr. toad in the BBC series?

    The BBC claymation series ROCKED

    by gingeracrockford

I remember watching pretty much every episode of that when I was 5 or 6, I've probably still got a few of them somewhere. David Jason was indeed Toad (and the greatest ever-Del Toro if you're listening GET HIM BACK FOR YOUR FILM OR IT WILL FAIL!) Michael Hordern was Badger (alas he died aged 84 in 1995-he was a great Gandalf on radio too) Ian Carmichael was Ratty (Peter Sallis-ie the voice of Wallace took over halfway through) and Richard Pearson was Mole (I don't know if he's still alive or not)
If you want to do another live action version (and Terry Jones's version wasn't that great) get David Jason as Toad, Hugh Laurie as Rat, Timothy Spall as Mole and Tom Baker as Badger.

    by rob j-y

I've ordered the DVD of the Cosgrove-Hall claymation film from 1983 (which incidentally was shown on ITV not the BBC, that of which I'm almost certain); I have a video from 1989 with 3 episodes of the subsequent TV series on it, and upon reflection, David Jason CANNOT be beaten as Toad! Shame about Michael Hordern, didn't know he had died.

If this is the Blade 2 guy, watch out!

    by leoo

I went to the Blade 2 website and listened to a lot of his commentary. I've also read some of his online interviews. He is one seriously messed-up freak. He's all about perverted sex, especially sex that doesn't reproduce; he's obssessed by sterility. Anti-Catholic. Loves bloody gore and violence. What in the WORLD is Disney thinking turning over a beloved innocent children's tale to this sick FREAK?? Read "Disney: The Mouse Betrayed" by Peter and Rochelle Schweitzer for more on how/why Disney has been totally ruined by Eisner and pals since their arrival in '84.

Loved the book, LOVED the BBC show

    by leoo

Yes, I saw the BBC show. And I loved the book.

Our Marxist friend RoosterBooster is probably wrong that this the story is an allegory, since Marxists, of both the traditional economic variety like him, and the cultural Marxists/Politically Correct types, interpret EVERYTHING through their obssessions. For Marxists, EVERYTHING is class war, even children's fairy tales. For PC-niks, EVERYTHING is about WHAMs (white heterosexual able-bodied men) oppressing everyone else. Both hate Western Civilization. Still, if he's right, that's another reason to love this story, since it annoys Marxists. Oh, and RoosterBooster? We Americans don't see ourselves as the oppressed masses; nearly all of us, including those who really struggle economically and those who are quite well-off, see ourselves as middle class.
