HERC Reviews 1st ROSWELL of Sweeps!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Roswell 3.12 FAQ
What’s it called?
”Ch-ch-changes.”
Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to married writing partners Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (“It’s Too Late and It’s Too Bad,” “Control”).
What does TV Guide say?
“When Liz experiences alien-like changes to her body, she's forced to contemplate leaving Roswell. In other events: Maria is offered a recording contract in New York City.”
Does Liz grow extra eyes or something?
Liz’s superpowers – a long-anticipated side-effect of being healed by Max more than two years ago – are kicking in.
What kind of superpowers?
Typical Roswell stuff. Liz can now melt ceramic plates and set books on fire by touching them. She can short out electronics by waving her hand over them. And, like Michael in the old days, she has little success in controlling these powers.
Are superpowers the limit of Liz’s changes?
No. She’s faint and distracted and she experiences hallucinations. Her sight and hearing also go on the fritz at really inopportune moments. Her creamy, nubile skin seems at times infused with electricity.
Sounds like a Liz-centric episode.
It is. We even learn that Liz’s longtime dream is the same as former netlet stablemate Rory Gilmore’s: to attend Harvard!
What else is TV Guide not telling us?
Maria gets so excited about her record deal, she tosses ex-boyfriend Michael to the floor of his residence and has her way with him. (One of the pair attaches much more import to this incident than the other.) Also, Maria is dueting with Jim Valenti when she gets “discovered,” but the invitation to Gotham is not extended to Roswell’s former chief law enforcement officer.
Does Max’s dad continue his investigations into the aliens’ secret identities?
Michael mentions that the scrutiny continues (if off-camera).
What’s good?
Loads of plot. Lots of Liz and Maria and their respective beestung lips. Kyle’s pitch for Buddhism. The much-needed break from Isabel’s exhausting marital woes (the couple is said to be in Santa Fe this week).
What’s not so good?
The latest tired excuse to keep Liz and Max apart is incredibly contrived. And Maria’s conflict with the record company folks who want to make her famous comes off as cliched insanity.
How does it end, spoiler boy?
Liz rides a bus to boarding school. (But now it’s her idea, not dad’s).
Why is Liz headed for boarding school?
Good question! The superpowers are making her very emotional. She says she’s still pissed at Max for sleeping with Tess last year. She feels a need to put some space between herself and alien-boy.
Is Roswell cancelled or what?
Last Tuesday, crashdown.com reported the show’s third-season order had been cut down to 18 episodes (from 20) and that the show would not be back for season four. UPN later countered that the decision regarding another year of “Roswell” wouldn’t be made till May.

While I can't say I ever thought about this before, please be happy knowing that you've now ruined the magic of this commercial for me for all time. Stupid ad agencies.... // e.
-
Hey man, give Herc a break. I'm a huge Buffy fan, and a former Roswell fan (moved to Smallville). I do enjoy the reviews though, to help me stay in touch with what's going on.
Keep up the great work, Herc!
BTW Herc, some more Smallville reviews would be pretty sweeet...
-
dude, I guess people watch Buffy and you have nice ENT reviews. But Roswell? C'mon, it must be a nice time for a walk, I guess... you're starting to worry me, man.
-
I didn't know where to post this, but I'm very disturbed. I just saw a 10-10-220 commercial with Alf as a main character. You know, "Just a DOLLAR!!"
Alf!! ALF!! -
It never attracted me nor will your review sway me to see it. You continue to praise and shower affection on Roswell and The Tick while shitting on Smallville, which by the way is the better show this season. If Roswell gets canned, so what, it sucked, get over it. From what I've heard, it's days are numbered right now. Smallville is getting better with every ep and shows no sign (for now) of slowing.
-
I think the smallville review is listed, why do you people choose to bash Roswell let alone even read the review if you don't intend to watch. Roswell is a great show and if this season is the last will go on in some form or another for much longer. I don't understand why the comparison was ever made between the 2 shows they are not even similar at all. Actors on Roswell are much better than Smallville- but I suppose in time Smallville could improve. One is action/adventure one is drama so the comparison should not have ever happened. Go Herc!!

To all the die-hard Roswellians out there - Roswell will live on - it started out a great show, still is today and will remain for however long it will be on the air! Smallville? Whatever - yeah it's a great show - for my ten year old niece and nephew! There is abolutely no comparison between it and Roswell, hell, there's no comparison between any show and Roswell! Roswell is the best and will remain the best - with the best fan following - what other show EVER has had such a devoted fan base? None.
-
Can't forget to say THANK YOU Herc for the great spoilers!! Keep 'em comin'!
-
It sounds a lot like an X-Files-ish type of show, only with a bunch of kids. And nope, it doesn't sound like it'll work for me. I guess you have to be a longtime fan to get anything from these spoilers or to know what's been going on the last couple of seasons. To each his own or whatever.
-
Herc don't like Smallville. Fine with me. I don't like it either. That might be the reason why he doesn't review it much or maybe the network didn't send him a screener beforehand.....
-
I met Shiri Appleby in a bar 3 weeks ago in Hollywood and she gave me her #! Not a fan of the show, but I gotta admit, she's FIGGIN hot! She was WASTED and I'm calling.....
-
I think they need to bring Tess back. that episode would rock! Then to make it more exciting have liz(with new powers) face off with tess! Man that would be a great episode
-
Tonights episode was good in the fact that it shows that now that the show is done establishing it's characters(because it moved to a new network) it'll be moving on to it's continued story line. From this episode and the preview for next weeks episode it seems that this second half of the season is really going to heat up, so make sure you all tune in next week because it looks exciting especially with Valenti getting shot, MetaChem, and the FBI after Max and Valenti. Now we are returning to familiar territory were the Roswell group is in serious trouble and once again have to fight for survival and life itself. LONG LIVE ROSWELL!
-
They've really gotten that balance of drama and sci-fi that they had in season 1. Tonight's ep was really top notch. As for you Smallville trolls, coming here to bash Roswell, go away and learn to look past the hype.
-
Most of season two and season three were just not Roswell. This episode was Roswell! Sure, it should have happened months ago, but it finally did happen, and it was Liz and Maria centric and had NO ISABEL.
Plus, it actually answered questions instead of bringing up more, and for once, the breakup of Max/Liz didn't feel contrived. She finally had to tell him how she really felt because of all the physical pain. She had been in denial about it before. And she needed space.
I needed some closure on that incredibly stupid cheesy Max and Tess storyline before I could even stand to look at Max again. -
Remember in season one, when Miss Topolsky was asking all those questions about people's dream jobs? She asked Liz what she expected to be her job: a molecular biologist. Dream job: Molecular biologist at Harvard.
The important thing is that the writers REMEMBERED she wanted to go to Harvard. -
what ever happened to the other aliens (Rath, Lonnie and Ava)?
and where did Brody go?
-
Brody they never really said, so hopefully he can come back. Rath,Ava and Lonnie they should be still back in NYC right? They tried to have Max killed last we saw them. So they may still come up

I'm sorry, this season seems off or something. Since the show changed to UPN and the actors have been very vocal about not wanting the show to continue, it makes sense why the show has been struggling. It's not the same show that it was last season. My two favorite characters (Max and Isabel) are so annoying this season. I'm not saying that the entire season sucks. Last night episode was actually decent so was the one with Kivar, even though I don't like Jesse. But how can they say that Max is Liz's true love when she ups and leave him for no reason at all. The infidelity thing, when they were broken up nonetheless, as a excuse doesn't fly anymore unless he slept with Tess again when I wasn't watching. Did they think we missed the season finale last season? She forgave him for that, or she did a great job acting like she did. Why is this the first we've heard that she's still mad at him. I hate to say it but I like Smallville better. I've been recording Smallville and watching Roswell, but I'm thinking that maybe I should just stop watching Roswell all together. Sorry for the length, guys. Later

As a fan of both Buffy and Roswell, I find it interesting that each of them had a dramatic change in tone after the move to UPN, and that the results could be so drasticly different. Buffy feels more mature, darker, sexier, more relevant. Roswell just feels broken. The first season did a great job of exploring who the characters were and how their relationships were evolving, and had a nice over-all story arc about the aliens discovering their identities. Season two changed gears and became much more action/Sci-Fi oriented, with an emphasis on how having the Royal Four around affected the lives of the humans near to them. Despite criticisms that it became to X-Files-ish, I thought that they hit their creative peak during the middle part of season two. The third season just seams to be drifting. At this point in season one, all the major relationships had been established, the Nasedo/Indian reservation connection was being investigated, and Valenti's investigation was getting too close for comfort. By this point in season two they had dealt with the skins, met the New York Dupes, had a flashback to the origins of the crash, and had a very cool time travel episode. This season has gone nowhere. The Izabel/Jess relationship seems contrived and forced. The various break-up/make-up scenario's are getting real old, real fast. And aside from Izabel's honeymoon encounter with Kivar, the overall plot has utterly stagnated. I was overjoyed when UPN picked Roswell up last year, but after the mess they've made of it this season, I don't care if it gets cancelled or not.

To RoswellForever, I definately admire your loyalty to the show but the truth is I have to agree with the majority of the others... Roswell WAS a good show. now it's well... pretty bad. Even some of the other shows now like smallville have yet to match the caliber of season 1 roswell.. but it's been going downhill since season 2.. Going sci-fi wasn't too bad of an idea but the way they did it just ruined it.. they wanted to make a kewl alien show but they weren't will to spend the extra dough to get the talent and make the sci-fi more believeable.. it was like b-rated stuff and today's tv crowd does demand a lot more quality from their tv shows...
it looked like it was on the right track to fix the show during the first few eps this season but since it's really getting garbage.. I mean if they would just give up on the whole Liz/Max angle... I mean they're gonna keep doing this over and over..
:: Get them together/Break em Up/One of them has a fling in between/Get Back together/Repeat Cycle ::
it gets pretty tired after a while... Tess was a good character and a good addition to the mix but they killed her off to please the whole Dreamer crowd..
It's kinda ironic how that it was the dreamer crowd that saved the show but now it's the dreamer crowd that's killed the show... -
You mean they want to leave the show? Katims and Co. should bring in Robert Wolf, cast the show and start all over again with a modified Roswell. Do up a new pilot and everything....
-
People are in to this show! They either love it with a passion or hate it with a passion. This show is so great that it evokes strong feelings from a whole spectrum! Sure Smallville is the flavor this month, but its time is short, and when all those "fans" of the show who have short attention spans will move on to the "next" thing, they will turn on it so viciously and it won't have a strong and supportive fan base like Roswell has. Roswell and it's characters will live forever.
