Published at:  Feb 02, 2002 2:00:16 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with a first look at one of the films I'm most looking forward to this year. Avary's script was brilliant... so is this trailer. Let's hope the film follows through. Enough talk... enjoy....

Excited about this, but not as much as I am about Avary writing the latest Phantasm movie, with Bruce Campbell. Wonder if it'll concern a farcical gay love triangle between Bruce, Angus Schrimm and Mike?

Why are you looking forward to this movie, Harry? The book is interesting if you were rich and had no appreciation of being so. It's a bunch of rich boys being all, like, nihilistic and stuff because money doesn't fulfill them, to which I say "Oh, fuck you." This looks like whiny shit, much like "Prozac Nation", and I will be avoiding it like the forebear of Pestilence it is.

  • Sorry, Harry, I know he's your friend and he'll probably read this but his SANDMAN script was terrible. The Corinthian is Rachael's father? Hell is Nazi Germany!? The transition between world is done with fucking puppets!?!! Burgess uses the power of Sandman's ruby to...MAKE IT IN HOLLYWOOD!?!!!!!

in the trailer design. i hope they find something to say with the material they're adapting, as the book is pulpy, seedy fluff, for the most part. there's a lot to work with, many concepts it plays with of intriguing nature, and i hope the movie plays those up. i look forward with a curious eye.

    looks interesting

The whole point of Ellis' books is that the characters are so spoiled, pretentious, shallow, loathsome etc. That's what makes them so much fucking fun. Anyway, the preview certainly suggests that the movie's going to do the book justice. Even if you're the kind of person who shits all over Bret Easton Ellis' work because it's too commercial or whatever, I reccomend you track it down, because it's a fucking great read. One minor rant though. I looked over at IMDB, and they described the movie as the story of Sean Batemen, a heterosexual student who becomes the 'target' for Paul's love. Fuck that. In the book Sean gave as good as he got. I hope Avery makes that clear, because the whole point of Sean's character was that he was constantly in denial about Paul (well, that's what I thought anyway). I hope Avery at least tried to tackle this, or (in my view) it will be a sign that he's bowing to commercial pressure to have a nice, safe heterosecxual as the leading man. (Whatever. I know you guys are going to shit all over this post now but I have a point).

    by johnnyblue

but it looks like he's full throttle on the subject matter. i mean, to go so far as to throw a title card: gay and show the the characters jumping around and having fun on the bed seems to ensure a vigorous nature in his approach. besides, those cereal box descriptions always sugar coat.

i also dig the 'the following preview will never be approved for all audiences'. that's another good sign. this is an adaptation that begs for the director to have a lot of fun - drawing us into the characters' drama while satarizing all the way.

    by droideka5

Maybe this flicko should be titled 'Attack of the Clones' eh? And another thing, Roger Avary had little to do with Pulp Fiction, they shouldn't bump up that crap at the start.

And where the hell is Blood Feast 2 ?! And why hasn't H.G. Lewis gotten more respect for the immensely enjoyable "2000 Maniacs" and "The Gore Gore Girls" ?! Both are classics ! And why is a movie that looks as bad as "The Master of disguise" actually coming out ?! And is there really any way that "Cube 2 - Hypercube" will be anywhere near as good as the first one ?! All of these are questions that I want answered. Oh yeah, this trailer looks alright as well.

"The Following Preview Will Never Be Approved By The Motion Pict

    by trav mcgee

Very nice take on the usual trailer boilerplate. I hope once again film makes for a better medium for Ellis's work than his actual writing. (I'm ignoring "Less Than Zero" for this point, heh.) I know he has his fans, and I never wish ill on a working author, more power to any novelist with a genuine following, but his novels have yet to impress me. I'll read them from a friend's recommendation, but by the end of them I just end up shrugging. Always too distant, too smug, too bratty. I keep looking to see how much of it's left, the novel equivalent of checking your watch in the theater. "American Psycho" felt like a one-trick pony (maybe two, but that's strecthin it), an initially interesting satirical concept unnecessarily expanded to novel-length, though watching Bateman's descent in the movie was far more engaging. So maybe Avary can make a compelling film from a source I won't feel compelled to read.

This movie looks pretty amusing, although it frightens me a bit to see Dawson having sex. The film looks a bit like a very racy Cruel Intentions meets Go. I'll check it out!

Doesn't anyone here own the Clockwork Orange dvd?

    by heywood jablomie

Avary ripped off Pablo Ferro's brilliant trailer for CLOCKWORK ORANGE, maybe the best trailer ever made, about which Kubrick-- not exactly Mr. Humility--said, "Well, you just created something my movie could never live up to." Avary's ripoff of same is lame. And looks like he doesn't even have much stuff in his movie to put through the Cuisinart to make it look like a zany decadence-fest. It just looks dumb. God, I'll bet QT is glad to have that schmoe off his back.

Tarantino did co-write it, but it's Avary's movie. Same with Reservoir Dogs and a good amount of QT's Natural Born Killers. Avary lets QT get all the credit, but that does not mean that QT was everything. We clear now?
