A Review of Scorsese's GANGS OF NEW YORK... prepare to drool!

Published at:  Feb 01, 2002 6:43:57 AM CST

Harry here, God I want to see this film. The movie is like a dream production that has been going on for so long now that it just seems like it has been going on forever. When September 11th allegedly pushed it into next year, I was furious... We really needed a film like this in the last quarter of 2001. Something visceral and primal and unflinching. The film Scorsese has been dreaming of for decades. I can't wait to see that dream given form, he's never worked on this type of scale before... I can only imagine. Here's Estranged... way too lucky for his own good, who got in to see the flick, beware of SPOILERS...

Hey Harry, Estranged here. Long time reader first time writer love the site.

Earlier this evening I had the pleasure of being apart of the very first
audience to see Gangs of New York or so they told me. Well I'm just going to
get right into it. This film is unbelievable in its bluntness. The level of
violence is astounding. It is a very straight forward film and it holds
nothing back. But with all the violence aside this is truly a remarkable
film. Another great triumph for Scoresesse. It succeeds in all areas. This
review will have spoilers so back away now if you don't want to be spoiled.

The acting is top notch. Leonardo Dicaprio, who I think is pretty damn good
actor but gets looked over, because of the pretty boy image, does an
excellent job. He plays the role of Amsterdam Vallon with great passion and
rage but with a sense of calmness.

Cameron Diaz also does a great job with
her role. The chemistry between her and Leo is fantastic.

The person who
really steals the show is Daniel Day-Lewis. He is absolutely phenomenal.
Bill "The Butcher" Poole is such a man of honor. At times I didn't know
whether to hate him or root for him. While I was in favor of Robert De Niro
getting the role, Daniel makes up for it with damn near perfection. He
brought such intensity and passion to the role that you savor every second
he's on screen. He gives a very Oscar worthy performance.

And a notable
mention goes to John C "People tell me I look like Han Solo" Reilly. Who
does a wonderful job. He's a God Harry just like Don Cheadle and Luis
Guzman. You gotta give it to him. He's fucking awesome.

The story is pretty good. It's the same old bad guy killed my father so I am
vowing revenge type of story. But it works so well here. Priest Vallon,
played by Liam Neeson, is Amsterdam's father. He gets killed in front of
Amsterdam and sixteen years later he comes back to stake his revenge. And
how does he do it? Well he joins up with The Butcher. Roams with his gang,
becomes his right hand man. And just when you think he played it right old
Bill finds out who he really is. As we see young Amsterdam take his revenge
into action we can't help but feel sorry for him knowing that the one man
who shouldn't know who he really is... knows. And well the poor boy gets his
ass handed to him pretty bad. Now Bill spares him so he can live in shame
because he can't be the same man as his father. Bill feels that it was an
honor to kill the Priest. That "He was the only man I killed that is worth
remembering." As Bill says in a great scene between him, Leo and an almost
half naked Cameron Diaz as she lies underneath a blanket. That scene was
wonderful as it gives great insight into The Butcher's mind which is evil
and twisted but honorable. Leo recovers from his wounds as the film reaches
a feverish climax during the 1863 draft riots. That's as much as I will
spoil for ya.

The opening sequence sets the tone of the film. Which is if your stomach
couldn't take that then get the fuck out cause that's the way it's gonna be.
The violence makes you cringe but makes you want more. People being gutted
legs being broken all the blood its something that some people might not
want to see. Another thing for its bluntness is that gangs fighting here.
There's a lot of racial violence going on and women being abused. Even
pretty boy Leo gives Cameron a few slaps. A few older women were
complaining about the violence and the nudity. But I hope the studio puts
them on a "pay no mind" list. Some old hag was even complaining about the
title. I mean the film is about GANGS that are in NEW YORK what the hell
should the title be? It's not like its Attack of the Clones!! Which by the
way I love that damn title so fuck all you whining fanboys.

On a final note this was a rough cut. Some of the sound was off and some of
the music might have only been temp. While I didn't recognize any of the
music I thought it worked fine with the film. I was also very surprised to
see that the shot of the World Trade Center was still in the film. It's the
last shot of the film. It's because the morph New York City through its
years until modern times. It didn't bother me and I hope they keep it in the
film as a remembrance. Because this is one of the very last films to feature
them.

I had HUGE hopes for this. I have a bizarrely strong interest in 19th Century NYC history (bizarre because I've never been there). So much so, I even read and enjoyed Caleb Carr's first couple of novels. I also like Scorsese. Goodfellas is one of the best films ever made in my opinion. The cast seems pretty strong (with the exception of Cameron Diaz), so I was really looking forward to this. All that disappeared when I saw the first trailer. Either that's the worst trailer in history....or Scorsese has totally missed the mark.

I'd be really into seeing this if DeCrapio and Diaz wasn't in it. The trailer for it looks pretty cool as far as sets, costume, and cinematography... But the acting, contrary to what this guy says, looks horrid. On top of the bad acting that I saw, the fake accents made me cringe. Or maybe the acting stinks more than it should because of the accents. In any event, what I saw of it looked pretty bad. Then again, I've seen some great movies where the acting hasn't been up to par. I guess we shall see. It's Scorcese, so I have to see it.

The Alienist and the Angel of Darkness were both GREAT freaking books! I'm actually quite surprised that neither has been optioned for a film yet. I've always pictured Johnny Depp as Laslo (I know he's played similar roles in From Hell and Sleepy Hollow, but he's who I imagined when reading the books). GONY looks great, I think Leonardo is an amazing actor, not just because he played a retarted kid well in Gilbert Grape either. He had an amazing presence in the scene in The Basketball Diaries where he is imagining himself busting into class with the full leather trench and the guns. Boy's Life was also an amazing film. What the hell am I trying to justify my admiration for Leonardo DiCaprio's acting ability for anyway, just cause you fanboys are so insecure about your sexuality that you can't watch a good-looking young man on film doesn't mean that I should feel wierd about liking him as an actor. Does it? Oh wait, maybe I'm gay too! SHIT!! Speaking of the gay thing, did any of you catch Will and Grace last night? I got the distinct feeling that Rosie O'Donnell was basically coming out on national television (not that there's anything wrong with that - it's just about damn time, I don't know who the hell she's kidding anyway). Anyone else get that impression? Peace out beyatches.

    by boris grushenko

He is only the greatest actor working today, and has been for the past 10 years. Nobody has his range and ability. He is a chameleon, and artist who out-Brando's Brando. I have been dying to see this film, more because of Day Lewis than Scorsese, which is saying a lot since I love Scorsese too. Day Lewis has not been in a film since his wonderful turn in The Boxer... 3 or more years ago!!! The last time Scorsese and Day Lewis got together, the result was nothing short of amazing in the excellent and underrated The Age Of Innocence, one of Scorsese's three best films (Taxi Driver and Goodfellas being the other two). Day Lewis was an amazing Newland Archer in that film. DeNiro is an amazing actor, I love the guy, but I have no doubt that Day Lewis will be a better "Butcher" than DeNiro, and that is saying something. I think Billy Bob Thornton is the only other actor with Daniel Day Lewis's range. Like Day Lewis, Thornton has a chameleon like ability to play almost any character... compare his characters from The Man Who Wasn't There, Bandits, U-Turn, Sling Blade, Monster's Ball, A Simple Plan... that is an amazing mixed bag, some heartbreaking, some horrifying. Thank God for Daniel Day and Billy Bob. DD and BB... hows that for alliteration? Maybe they should be a superhero tandem?

TRAILERS NEVER DO MARTY'S MOVIES JUSTICE/SPACE LIMITED FOR S

    by lt. torello

The man's movies are so explosively good, the standard "greatest-bits-and-soundbites-in-two-minutes" trailer never give an accurate picture of the finished product. I remember seeing the "Goodfellas" trailer in summer of 1990, with "Roses Are Red" and "Layla" playing over it, and thinking, "It looks pretty good..." Of course, when the film came out that fall it was a two-and-a-half-hour orgasm. I saw the "GONY" trailer last summer with "Apocolypse Now Redux" and again thought, "It looks pretty good..." but I predict the finished film will be both hardcore and a thing of beauty. The release date wasn't pushed back because of 9/11 -- Marty and Thelma needed more time to edit it. Same thing happened with "Age of Innocence." Three Great Films, Three Great Directors at the Santa Rosa Junior College (which will include a screening of "Mean Streets") has just four spaces left!

I hope this movie isn't going to be as boring as Age of Innocence. I'm not big on Scorsese's period pieces. This is the same film that had to have constant reshoots and was apparently described by a studio exec as unwatchable in its original longform (unfinished cut) right? As much as I like Scorsese and admire many of his films this one has had the stench of death about it for so long I really cant get my hopes up. After all the reshoots and reworking it might be a masterpiece but I think we will have to wait and see on this one. At least they bit the bullet and moved it back to summer this year to give the director the time to tweak it and make it work.

A studio exec describing GONY as "unwatchable"? I guess they mean the movie doesn't have any pie humping or digital armies running into each other in badly edited and photographed "action scenes". LOTR anyone? No action figures? No Happy Meals? It must, indeed, be "unwatchable". Unless, you're someone who truly loves films. In case you haven't noticed, brain deads, I'm being sarcastic. by kieran

I'm really suprised by all of these negative comments about Age of Innocence. Raging Bull is his best film, hell its almost THE best film, but Age of Innocence is a personal favourite. Without doubt Age has the best music, the best opening titles, the best cinematography. Its far more an internal journey that most films, it certainly lacks the fantastic action scenes of Raging Bull or Casino or Good Fellas or Mean Streets, but its a different kind of film, a different genre. And what it proves is that Marty is the master of whatever genre he tackles. I personally look forward to his return to a period film. A Scorcese period ganster film? How can it be bad?

    by fd resurrected

The book was published in the late 1920's, which makes up the fact that the book was at times dry and drearly written from the collected sources that probably overwhelmed the author in terms of massive research. But the rise of the rival gangs from historical perspective, not to mention shocking details of incredibly brutal violence as the sole mean of "the survival of the fittest". The Draft Riots Part I and II are the best and most fascinating chapters of the book, because it was exhilaring and scary to read. Pick up the reprinted paperback now available at Barnes & Noble or Amazon. Marty Scorsese should kick ass with the brutal reenactment of the Draft Riot in the third of the movie. Let's hope the MPAA don't slap the film with a NC-17 rating for excessive gory violence, 'cause we know Marty and Miramax don't want that. Martin should keep his vision true and keep Harvey Weinstein in distance from the editing room. This should be the "Titanic" of gangster movies (however improper the description may be). Martin has long been shunned by the Academy Awards, and he will definitely earn the recognization if the film is as good as the workprint review indicates.

    Reshoots

    by alpha

Everybody knows that the film has had numerous reshoots thats no secret. If you remember the original release date was supposed to be December 21 but it was pulled. You wanted some sort of proof hunt around various movie news websites for mentions of reshoots. Heres one about the re-edit from Coming Attractions " October 5, 2001... Miramax has decided to pull Gangs of New York from its December 21 release date to an unspecified day sometime in 2002. Inside word is that the studio feels the movie's cost (close to $100 million) and its low chances to receive Oscar nominations in a crowded holiday season are enough to delay the picture and give Scorsese more time to re-edit the film." The unwatchable mention was in a column by one of the semi-gossip writers (it might of been Wells). I'm not saying reshoots are a bad thing and as I said it may well turn out to be a masterpiece (the studio execs had kittens when they saw Apocalypse Now) but certainly late last year the studio intended this "Miramax will now devote its energy to hyping The Shipping News instead of GoNY." now given The Shipping News being less than a inspiring success you have to assume that the "unwatchable" quote may well have been the feeling of at least one Mirimax exec. All I'm saying is that the studio wasn't happy, reshoots and re-editing have occured and dont get overexited until the film comes out. Remember Phantom Menace people got so hyped up that the finished product was always going to struggle to meet their expectations and when it was only an ok film people reacted with alot more bile than it probably deserved. Lets just sit back and hope for the best with this film (Scorsese rarely lets us down.)

I don't have to "hunt around various movie news websites for mentions of reshoots," because I didn't make the claim. YOU did. I'm well aware of EVERY and ALL stories, articles, and reports on GONY and have found NOTHING that backs your claim.

Jeffrey Wells NEVER had such a quote in his column. What he actually did was quote an industry source who claimed that the FOUR-hour early rough cut way back in September was "long and labored."

No "unwatchable" quote exists, alpha. You gotta prove it.

BTW, as to "re-edits," Scorsese said at the lecture he gave at the Gotham History Festival that 9/11 WAS a factor in the Christmas release postponement. The climate of the day was making him consider more "delicately" his editorial decisions. He didn't want to rush. With the extra time and the apparent ferocity of the finished product, the delay seems to have been a good thing. From the review, it appears Scorsese didn't tone the film down too much and has kept it unflinchingly honest.

Just bacause I haven't kept it bookmarked and whos column it was in doesn't jump to my mind instantly doesn't mean that I didn't read that word, I said it might of been Well's column probably because I recalled the negative quote you found. Just because its written in a column doesn't make it true, but if it is true it would of only been one Mirimax execs opinion anyway. In both my posts I have stated that the finished product may turn out to be a masterpiece. You seem to want to defend the film so much that your unwilling to accept the truth of the films situation. Simply put Mirimax execs obviously had some problems with the film (they could be idiots who knows), and a decision was made to put the film off by 1/2 a year. In the end until we see the film we really wont know whether its a work of art or a piece of crap, I'm hopeful for the latter and fearful of the former. As I said in my last post execs had kittens when they saw "Apocalypse Now" and most people agree its a masterpiece so just because a exec found it "unwatchable" or as the quote you found said "long and labored" doesn't mean it wont be brilliant (although Leo tends to make my skin crawl). Just calm down, relax and hope for the best. I will say one thing though any film with Scorsese as director should at least have something to recommend it even if it turns out to be all you have hoped for.

    Is Amsterdam Vallon a Jedi?

    by eugene o

Why not? The name is as silly as any of those STAR WARS names (Wedge Platypus, Mace Vindaloo, Schroeder Kimchee...).

I will see this movie, but...

    by silver_joo

... it seems to have an aroma of 'Heaven's Gate' about it, the Cimino flop. I don't know. Critics will probably love the thing, but I am not sure the masses will. For something with so much pedigree, behind the camera and on screen, despite amazing reviews, if it does not do the business, then people will deride it. A shame really.

    Sounds good so far....

I sure hope this review is the real deal and not some plant, but, hey, it could be just that. Nonetheless, there is some sort of press screening this weekend, apparently. At least according to Army Archerd's latest column and a couple of other sources who contacted Miramax. Now why do you suppose Miramax would want to get this thing out in the open, so to speak, if it really sucked? I can't think of any good reasons. Usually when a studio feels they have "bad product" on their hands, they don't screen for the press/critix until the very last moment, if at all, these days. My guess, if this is true---Miramax strategy to get good word of mouth going on product they think has potential legs; to build an audience several months before it opens. It's called "marketing" boys and girls. And Gangs, being a period piece and all, needs as much word of mouth and strong marketing as it can get to recoup it's big budget. That said, I'm getting excited.

I tend to agree with you. Studios dont give press screenings unless they are trying to acheive something. Hopefully they are doing exactly what you said and trying to get critics excited. It does seem strange to have a screening so early though (about 4 months). It could be that this is a longish cut and if the reaction is negative they may trim a few scenes and if its positive they'll go with what they have. Normally they would do that through audience screenings though. I'd tend to agree with you that they are hoping to generate a buzz about a film in advance since its a really unusual time to release a period drama.

the reason this came from a plant-

    by heywoodfloyd

when the guy says "fuck all you whinning fanboys". he's supposedly writing an email to harry, but the way he's already defending himself against the readers implies that he knows for a fact that harry will post it. scorsese is definetely the world's best living director, and i hope this obliterates the relative mediocrity of his recent career--bringing out the dead, kundun, etc. the second best film he ever made was raging bull--check out any of the fight scenes if you don't believe me. "you never got me down ray, you never got me down." or the farm animal noises on the soundtrack in the scene where jake beats the shit out of his brother in front of his family. you'll never see anything that eisenstienian in a hollywood film for the rest of your lives so enjoy it. however, goodfellas is not only his best film, it is the best film ever made. film snobs who go to the theater looking for art love it and rock heads who go to the theater to see gangsters beating the shit out of people also love it. that dichotomy is what makes it the best film ever made. by anyone. better than any film that peter jackson will ever make. better that citizen kane. i'm serious.

No problem, alpha. I called you magnificent, didn't I?

    by arnzilla

Yes, I doubt you when you say that you "read in someones column the word 'unwatchable.'" You may have read it in AICN Talk Back. But if it was anywhere other than a forum like this, I would have read it myself. Isn't it possible that you read it in this or another forum by a poster who was also misquoting? I've read misquotes about Jeannette Walls' column on movie boards. Maybe it had to do with that. Thus far, I've read only TWO columnists who ran negative quotes regarding the quality of the film: the aforementioned Wells quote and Walls who quoted someone who quoted DiCaprio as allegedly distancing himself from the film. I don't want or need to defend a film, alpha. I want and need to defend factual truths. "The truth of the films situation" is that it wasn't finished in time for a Christmas release for one reason or another, or perhaps a combination of several. I thought it might not be finished way before 9/11. I've been whining for months and months that Marty can't edit a film in less than 8 months, especially a three hour epic. He has NEVER done it.

Want to know why they really pushed it back?

    by 007-11

We all know wasn't 9/11, but do we all know the real reason? I think I do, Oscars. Think i'm full of shit? Maybe, but look at the huge brawl for Oscars spotlight thats going on right now. There were more astoundingly good movies this year than you can shake a fist at! Imagine throwing this potentially great film into the mix! It'd be a bloodbath the likes of which we haven't seen since Saving lost to Shakespeare. Not to mention the Oscar hungry Leonardo, he wants it bad man, I know it. He lost for Gilbert and wasn't even nominated for Titanic, he wants an open playing field and this year wasn't giving in. The Best Actor category has so many contenders this year that it'll leave a lot of people behind that any other year would have been a top pick. Thats just my interpretation, I could be wrong

Once Upon A Time In New York

    by david aaronson

Im sorry guys But I think this film may be in trouble. From what ive heard its more to do with scorsese's lenghth of the film, Weinstein has made him cut the film twice(which suggests scorsese is contracted to deliver a two hour or at the very least a two and a half hour movie. I dont think the two of them were on the best of terms anyway with Weinstein unhappy at Scorsese going over budget,Scorsese in turn was pissed at Weinstein from pulling the movie from his xmas oscar shot.(Did he really through a tantrum and a mobile phone at one particularly heated production meeting?) I hope im wrong but this movie is starting to sound very similar to the battle Leone had with the Ladd Co.over Once Upon A Time In America, and we all know what happened to that film!
