Euro-AICN Exclusive: The Producer of Arzak Rhapsody opens up about the new series, its art, and Moebius
Father Geek here with an AICN Exclusive from France for all our fans of outstanding phantasy animation. After last weeks story on Moebius' French Television series I wrote Producer Alexandre Brillant to find out more, and this is what he sent back to me...

He also had some comments of great interest...
First, you can watch for the opening of www.wolflandpictures.com next
month.
Then, here is some info about the series:
This is the only series entirely conceived, written, drawned, designed and directed
by Moebius (Jean Giraud). Everything in each episode is drawned and colored (on Photoshop)
by him, then animated in Flash 5 (yes !) by the Millimages Online team (one
of the biggest animation studio in France), then formated for broadcast by
Télétota (french video post-production facility). The result is amazing. Why
Flash 5 ? Because it was the only way for us to keep the original designs
intact (excuse my bad english).
Here are some exclusive pictures that no one as ever seen before (I'm a
great fan of your site). Enjoy, it's a scoop.
>
The World Premiere is set for September 1, 2002; and our budget was approx. FRF 3,500,000 to get it going...
Don't hesitate to send me any question regarding the project.
Sincerely,
Alexandre Brillant...
Producer
Also if you type "arzak" on Imdb.com, there is something for you.

Father Geek back... I'm hot to see this! Moebius is one of the great Sci-fi illustrated story tellers, and just glance at those film credits... Costumes for BLADE RUNNER; Production design on TRON; Concept Artist on ALIEN, ABYSS, WILLOW, MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE, 5th ELEMENT and soooooooo much more. This series should ROCK!!!!

Because they would be hugely successful and introduce alargely negligent American generation of children and adults to his fantastic work.
-
Because I severly doubt he would get the artistic freedom he seems to have on this project, sad to say. These pictures look fantastic and I hope that someone imports this series, not changing a thing- no dubbing of voices,no new music, nothing. Could we see the first televised series that was completely subtitled? I wouldn't mind at all.
-
They've got the perfect platform for stuff like this. Cartoon Network has so much potential, they really should show more serious animation (Bakshi's LotR, more anime, Princess Mononoke, just to name a few). I would really like to see this series get some play in the U.S. I don't know if it's as big a deal to keep the subtitles, though. It seems like they usually do a pretty decent job dubbing animation as opposed to live action. Princess Mononoke is a great example of a foreign piece done well with dubbing, but then again they had Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Crudup and Claire Daines (among others) doing the voices. I'd love to see what a series done in Flash looks like, sounds like a great idea.

Animating with flash 5 for TV sounds very interesting.
-
animating in flash 5 is extremely disappointing. and no i don't need to reserve judgement.
-
Flash 5 will work brilliantly for this. I've used to it to create animation for TV, and the results were quite nice. As with almost any tool out there, it all about the quality of the user. Sure, any dolt can download the program for free and throw together a real crap lousy animation and put it online, but we're not talking about someone like that. I'm looking forward to this show, the design should be really amazing, and I have confidence that the animation will look as good, or better, than almost anything out there. You'd be surprised at the varied of use of Flash, from video games to television to kisok interfaces. Oh by the way, Verhoeven rules - http://www.mad-dutchman.com/cw/

Even Moebius rip-offs look cool, so this real deal will be sweet. Judging from the artwork, this is one flash cartoon I will be downloading. That and the one you can find at www.mad-dutchman.com/cw/------------------------------- BTW Citizen Toxie is worth checking out. I saw it at a test screening here in Manahattan. The best part was the temp-track use of "Duel of the Fates" during the fetus fight scene. If only LucasFilm wasn't so litigious. Oh, and Kerraddock is a crap-lousy man-animal.

A few animated TV series have been made using Flash up here in Canada, probably mainly to save money. One was Mr. Hell (the full title was something like 'Aaah, It's The Mr. Hell Show!', a co-production with the U.K.; it aired on The Comedy Network here and will soon finally debut on Showcase Next in the U.S. Another more successful series (though Mr. Hell has its moments) is John Callahan's Quads!, a co-production with Australia, which airs on Teletoon, sort of our Cartoon Network equivalent (though it's not nearly as good as Cartoon Network). Quads! has been nominated for several industry awards; I'm not sure if it has won anything, but it's probably the best adult animated series ever produced in Canada ... not that that's saying much. Anyway, neither show has anything in common with the look of Moebius' artwork, so I'm unclear on how his stuff will jive with Flash.
-
Nice. It's probably true that they're using flash to save money, it's not as elegant as some of the other software progs out there, but it's like 1/10th the cost -- and that's the cheap ones. Plus finding someone who can do the more rudimentary stuff is easier and cheaper. The more I think about it the more I'm excited by the Moebius project, from the little we've seen so far, not only does it keep the cool style, but I really dig the color palette. btw Some Dude, laugh now, but know that all your armies and all their advanced technology couldn't put up a measly five minute fight against the Gas Drones of the Home Office!
-
My all-time favorite from Moebius.
-
Well that was the latest word on it, I have heard. Just check corona or http://www.davidfincher.cjb.net/. In the end, I guess it won't see the light of day before 2005. The truth hurts, eh?
-
I just thought of another ... aren't the newer episodes of Home Movies (on YTV in Canada and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the U.S.) animated using Flash too?
