Roger Avary on RULES OF ATTRACTION!!!
Harry here, with an interview that Clint did with Roger Avary about RULES OF ATTRACTION. I find it disturbing that Roger forgot to mention that I was one of the people that asked him to fuck me with his Oscar statuette... Hell, we've all been yelling "FUCK THE OSCARS" for so long, I just wanted to know what it'd feel like. Besides wasn't it Madonna who said she'd never let a man fuck her if he didn't know what it was like to be penetrated? ANYWAY (as I hear screams from Talkbackers below) Here's Clint and Rog...
Today,
I interviewed Roger Avary about the upcoming RULES OF ATTRACTION, here's the guts of the interview.
Firstly, how's filming going on RULES OF ATTRACTION?
Filming is complete. It was an extraordinary shoot -- unusually smooth. Everyone turned in magnificent performances and there really was this vibe that we were all here to do something special. I've felt blessed, or charmed, on this film because everything that should have gone wrong went right. For a movie made with so little money, we did amazing things. I'm more proud of this film, and my experience on it, than anything else I've ever done.
Christian Bale opted not to return to cameo as Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) - did you replace him?
Yes. I'm sorry that Christian didn't want to reprise his role, but in a way I'm happy about it. My movie and Mary Harron's movie are two very different creatures from two very different Universes. I thought it would be cute to have Christian there -- but in the end my Patrick Bateman exists for very different reasons than Mary's did. In the end it was for the best.
And was there any thought on putting Clay from LESS THAN ZERO in there?
During the writing stage I toyed with the idea of Clay and Blaire returning to campus (and I would have used Andrew McCarthy and Jamie Gertz). My notion was that Clay was now a studio executive and they were visiting his magna alumni for nostalgia. I wrote several variations on scenes with Clay and Blaire, but they always seemed extraneous to the story I was telling. And my script was already long by Hollywood standards -- so I cut them.
Tell me about some of the more racy scenes in RULES?
The Dressed to Get Screwed Party from the book proved to be one of the most exhilarating days on the set. Unfortunately I had walking Pneumonia that day and couldn't enjoy all of the nakedness running around.
Looking back How Much did PULP FICTION help your career?
Let me put it this way, I've had women ask me if I would fuck them with my Academy Award. Imagine what it has done for my career.
You met Quentin (Tarantino) at a video store in the 1980's. Did you use to dream up movie stories even back then?
Yes. Most of our great ideas began behind the counter of that store. Most
of those ideas have yet to surface so that the public can enjoy them as much
as we did.
Do you prefer to write or direct?
I prefer to direct because you get to interact with people. Writing is just something I need to do to get the movie made. It's just a tool to explain to people what I see in my head.
How do you think the events of September 11 will effect the industry?
I couldn't tell you how September 11th will effect the film industry -- the film industry is too fickle and unpredictable. I can tell you that I don't believe in extremism, in any direction.
Best and Worst talent to work with?
The best talent to work with is talent that trusts you. Trust is what filmmaking is all about.
How do you relax?
With either movies, or yoga.

Can't be any worse than the image we're constantly getting of his naked fatness being covered in rose petals can it?

I take temporary leave from my lurking to say that this is my favourite book, and Hollywood better not fuck it up the way it did American Psycho. I work in a big chain bookstore, and the thought of a-thousand-and-one clueless assholes buying 'Rules' as a result of seeing a Hollywood-ized version of it is too fucking much. Deal with it. Rock and roll.
-
I liked American Psycho quite a bit, in fact. I thought Christian Bale's performance was note perfect.
And as far as Rules of Attraction sending a multitude of clueless people to the bookstore, I have to wonder why you're so intensely against that happening. I don't think anything that causes somebody to open a book and read can be all bad. Give them some credit: they're trying *not* to be clueless anymore, after all. -
Piece of cake: you can, or you can't! This gift, to be a real good cockmeister, was given to you by GOD. If you don't have it ... BUMMER ... you can't learn that. Then you are just doin boring in/out stuff.

Sorry to anyone who came in late there, but go get Quint's (?) set report and all will be revealed, in a matter of speaking.

...so I'm certainly glad it never came anywhere near your asshole, Harry. But seriously, I interviewed Roger for a book of interviews I've been working on for several years back in '99, and I must say that he is one of the genuinely nicest people I've ever met in my life. (He is certainly nothing like Quentin Tarantino--sorry, Harry.) Roger even allowed me to take a picture with him in his house in front of a large French subway poster of KILLING ZOE, with me holding the statuette. Now how many filmmakers do you suppose would have done that? (Again, certainly not QT.) I for one cannot wait until RULES OF ATTRACTION comes out as I think Roger is a true talent who, unlike many of peers, has never gotten a swollen head from success. And, having read Roger's DALI script, let me say that I hope and pray to the film gods everyday that he someday gets the chance to make that film.

Rules.. is probobly my favorite book, second only to less than zero. I didn't mind american psycho all that much, but then I never read the book. However, i did see the film less than zero and I was beyond dissapointed. I can only hope(and looks like they won't)that they(hollywood) doesn't screw up, yet another extraordinary piece of literature, and turn it into a barely mediocore slice of melodrama
-
Less than zero fucking sucked and was only slightly saved by a guy who knew more about drugs than anyone else who worked on that movie, thats right raise your hand Mr.Downey Jnr.Anyway Rules Of Attraction is a good book and Roger has my complete faith.P.S does anyone know when its suppoesed to be coming out?

Filming "Rules Of Attraction" is a piece of piss - if Avary really wants to try something challenging, try Easton Ellis' "Glamorama". Never have I so enjoyed a book that made my ears bleed.
And knock Harron's "American Psycho" as much as you like, but Guinevere Turner...

Film for the louche gentleman of leisure -
I have just finished the first part of Glamorama. Now Ellis is probobly my favorite writer. Tell me it goes somewhere please. I want to stay with it, but it is getting harder. tell me there is a payoff. The writing is of course great, but that is a given for ellis. It has to get better than this right?

MCB: I'm very protective of my favourite books, that's all.
seanbateman1985: You should definitely stick with Glamorama. About halfway through it goes into totally fucked up-suspense thriller land, but the payoff's definitely worth it.
Also, is Avery setting his 'Rules Of Attraction' in 1985? He mentioned at one point that he was thinking of having Clay and Blaire 'return' as adults; is he taking into account the fact that the two of them attended Camden at the exact same time as Paul/Lauren etc? Or am I just being insanely nit-picky about this? -

Are you kidding me? Rules is without a doubt Ellis' least interesting novel, with boring interlooping "cutting edge" stories and unitentional plastic characters not nearly as enjoyable as Ellis' intentional ones, such as Bateman. You pseudo intellectuals need to stop thinking you're smart because you read a book that's being made into a movie and actually check out some other novels in the "literature" sections where you work and visit occasionally for the lastes video game and Japanimation magazines. Rules of Attraction? Please....

he never said!
-
Brett Easton Ellis'novels should never be near the phrase
"extraordinary literature." The film American Psycho is a world above anything he has ever written. Look at Less Than Zero, that did a good job of staying in line with his book, and the film was Shit! -
... an unwatchable movie made from an unreadable book.

I walk past the freshman dorm and look in. There is a poster of Madonna on a girl's wall. I weep for our generation. I light a cigarette. I slept with the girl who has the picture of Madonna on the wall. I was going to sleep with Madonna but I am the only male character in an Ellis' novel who isn't into being penetrated, even going so far as to outfight those three freaks that night in jail to avoid it. Madonna lights a cigarette. Some guys from NYU are looking for the dressed to get screwed dance. I give them directions to Paul's room. He'll screw them. The girl with the picture of Madonna on her wall lights a cigarette. Seniors are cooler than freshmen even though there's only a couple of years difference in their ages. Harry lights a cigarette. He should hang out with Franklin, who Sean calls Frank. That boy from California is an idiot. I stay up all night wired on crank. The guys from NYU, Franklin, Sean, the boy from California and Roger's Oscar all light cigarettes...
