Cameron Crowe's next film... like SAY ANYTHING'

Published at:  Jan 22, 2002 1:42:27 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... So, the next Cameron Crowe film will be in the style of SAY ANYTHING... Hmmm, does this mean we'll get a character as sublimely perfect as the genius of Lloyd Dobler? One can only give up offerings to the various deity of choice that this be so. Personally I'll offer my sacrifice to AKU!!!

A few words about Cameron Crowe's next movie!

As for Cameron Crowe, the director passed on CATCH ME IF YOU CAN with
Leonardo
DiCaprio to instead work on his own script for his next project.
While
out promoting VANILLA SKY, the director said it would be a complete
180
from SKY and would be more like his earlier projects. "It's a little
bit
like the style of JERRY MAGUIRE," Crowe says, "but it's an ensemble
character
comedy-drama. It's actually more like SAY ANYTHING." He went on
to say
that he's half-finished with the script but gave no hints on when
filming
would begin.

Check it out! It's good stuff!

Hey folks, Harry here... turns out that JM above didn't properly reference the source material. The original story appeared on EmpireOnline!

Hi,

Just wanted to mention that the Cameron Crowe story stating that his next
film will be in the style of Say Anything
(http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=11314) is actually from an
interview conducted by me for Empire Online
(CLICK HERE FOR THE ORIGINAL STORY!!!) If you could alter the
article to credit us I'd be much obliged.

I for one liked VANILLA SKY, thought it was even better than the original, and I think UNTITLED is one of the best movies ever made. If you haven't seen the director's cut of that one, by all means do so. NONE of that footage should ever have been cut from the film. Best Director's Cut ever.

I am thrilled with Cameron's decision to go back to his roots. Vanilla Sky was outstanding, but Say Anything... remains my favorite Crowe film. He just knows instinctively how to bring heart-felt moments across on film.

    by ciwm

The Stairway to Heaven scene is trancendent and it is the one scene that the could not get the rights to the music. Makes you wonder who made the choice not to give the rights; the scene would have made an already amazingly important piece of music seeded that much deeper into the conciousness of Pop Culture. UNTITLED is perhaps one of the best, if not the best, movies I have seen in the past 10 years.

vanilla sky falls back to earth

    by snatch88

Vanilla sky was such a let down. The only way this movie could have worked is if Crowe had put his own two cents in on a new idea that wasn't a carbon copy of the superior original. Why make a remake of an unbelievably original movie and concept just because it's in subtitles. Open Your Eyes was truly great piece of work that stood on it's own with out the help of Tom Cruise or the english language. Vanilla Sky is exactly the same movie, even word for word at times, except for the painful elavator ride in the climax. The only good think to come out of this movie was sweet, sweet Cameron. I'd love for her to swallow my cum. Also, Penelope Cruz has no talent in American films. She should stick to Foriegn films, it suits her much better.

By the way, I would love for you to post another list of 10 movies that are the FINAL list for the Best Picture nominees this year. You didn't for the 2000 awards but it was MIA last year. by abcdefz1

Vanilla Sky was an interesting failure and very brave of Tom Cruise to fuck with his public persona so much. Crowe even has him behind a lavender mask at one point, which is kind of funny. And the sound design was absolutely incredible. If it doesn't win sound editing this year, it'll be a shame. Still, I pretty much loathed the movie. Say Anything is a favorite (released on DVD in March, I think) and Almost Famous is in my top ten of all movies up to now. I walked out of Singles. Jerry Maguire is pretty good. That's my two cents.

    by alecbings

Say Anything is easily one of the best romantic comedies ever made...one of the few times a writer has put a little thought into the process and realized that relationship-centered subject matter doesn't automatically earn the tag "romantic". Jerry Maguire is better than you remember it being, and Almost Famous is a masterpiece unto itself. (I think it's best that we just not mention Singles.) plus the man wrote Fast Times! jeez, whatever this man does, a ticket for it is going to end up in my hand. and has anyone read his book Conversations With Wilder? it's a collection of Crowe's personal interviews with Billy Wilder (and if you don't know who Billy Wilder is, its probably best that you leave here right now and come back in a few years when you've learned something about film.) anyway, its one of the best books i've ever read about filmmaking.

    "I just loved your movies"

    by fd resurrected

Imagine saying that to Cameron Crowe when he's hopping around at a film festival. Nevertheless, I love Cameron Crowe the man (as Rolling Stone journalist and diaryist) and the director. I own the first two of his movies on laserdisc. I liked Jerry Maguire, though, but I don't like DVD very much (although I own Almost Famous DVD) and Sony-DADC laserdisc is rife with laser rot so never owned it. He rules supreme. He knows how to write the characters with humor and heart that the majority of screenwriters couldn't do anymore. I collected the old Rolling Stone articles written by Crowe on tattered photocopy from a high school library. Cameron should go back to his roots to make another variation of Say Anything for the 21st century, hopefully more fresh, humorous and original rather than smaltzy and contrived. Cameron Crowe will always be my idol.

I'm not going to list Cameron Crowe's entire filmography. I personally think he's damn near infallible. "Say Anything" is one of my all-time favorites...if for no other reason, it reminds me so damn much of my own life (except for that horrible tax evasion subplot...(John Mahoney in the bathtub...fast-forward)). Even "Singles" was a good movie...and I see that most people neglected to mention that. I personally get all excited when I see he's at work again. And I, too, enjoyed Vanilla Sky.

'Almost Famous' is one of the greatest movies ever... ever. And I fell in love with John Mahoney all over again because of his role in 'Say Anything;' curled up in the bath-tub... fuckin' beautiful. Whatever Crowe's got, it's worth a look. Out.

    vanilla sky/crowe

    by williamzabkarox

first off i agree with people who say vanilla sky was one of the best of the year! it's very underrated a very sweet/sad film. it makes you think and ask yourself...what would you do in that situation cruise was in. at first the film confused me (like it did in the begining for many)but the last 45 minutes really made it all come together and made those thoughts of the 1st almost two hours of this is a piece of boring shit go totally away! i haven't seen the original that this was based on (it's hard to think it comes anywhere close to this since it was such a small film)but vanilla was amazing and crusie has impressed me with his diversity of roles lately (anyone else notice nicole kidman is also taking some werider roles lately as well?)anways...i can understand people's opinions why they didn't like it but peronsally i felt it was underrated! as for crowe... he's on a huge roll as of late making some really big impressive films (all starting with the success with maguire). almost famous was a great film and following it up with another strong film like vanilla only made me anticipate his next film. say anything was a good little film (with the worlds best and most underrated actor john cusack)and it sounds like crowe is not going for a huge film like the past 3 and opting for more of a singles type approach. should be another good film by crowe and i think one should also be excited about the music for the film as well. crowe does such a great job in his films with the music/soundtrack and it fits so amazinly well in the filsm (expecially in famous/vanilla)and give the scenes so much more and makes you want to listen to those songs because they stick in your head long after the film is over! i don't think we've seen the last of cameron crowe!

How could Abre Los Ojos be better than Vanilla Sky? Because it's the original, therefore it holds the initial magic and original concept. Crowe's Vanilla Sky is a bloody carbon copy no matter what he says about 'making it his own' (in pretentious voice)- ooooh it's got pop culture, ooh it's got Spielberg. The film is just a vanity project for Cruise to make it seem he's stretching his range when in fact his injuries in the film are no where near those in the original. Obviously he didn't want to look to ugly. Vain git.

God I get so sick of people belittling the 'small' films simply for the reason that they are small and aren't big budget Hollywood films. I mean where's your argument? Oh yes that's right, you haven't even seen the film and just because you love Cameron Crowe you couldn't imagine his REMAKE being worse than the ORIGINAL. IMHO Crowe is completely overrated, Jerry Maguire is melodramatic pap, and Almost Famous is an ego trip only rescued slightly by a luminous performance by Kate Hudson (fantastic lady- you can see her mother in the way she acts perfectly.)

Now go and watch the original and then come back with a decent argument rather than your pathetic dismissal

    Rant over.

    by cc dobbler

Almost Famous was only as good as it's cast. Crowe is an amazing director, and his cast was unbelieveable in that flick. They weren't big stars, just good actors. Brad Pitt was originally in mind for Russell Hammond, and I think that would have detracted from the beauty that is Almost Famous. I think that the only star I would be willing to see in this one would be Cusack. I'll see it anyways, just beacause it's Cameron, but the Tom Cruise vehicle is getting old.

    My Conversation With Cameron Crowe...

    by buzz maverik

"H'lo?" "Cam, it's Buzz!" "Buzz! How ya doin', man?" "Not bad. What're you up to?" "I was just making some mix takes. Getting the best cuts of ASIA and TESLA and TOTO and THROBBING GRISTLE all on one tape." "Oh yeah. You gotta have that, say, Cam..." "Buzz, there's something I've always wanted to ask you. It won't effect our friendship or anything, but I have to know..." "Okay, I admitt, I haven't seen VANILLA SKY yet..." "Not that...We're you the inspiration for my wife's song BARRACUDA?" "No, Cam, not unless she was that girl I french kissed at the junior high dance after me and my friend Eriglione smoked that hash oil..." "I forget, Buzz, which Ridgemont kid did you inspire?" "Those guys are all a little older than me, Cam, but if I had to say...probably Spicoli when I was in junior high and Damone when I was in high school." "Well, I'm glad that's settled. Say, do you still have Eddie Van Halen's batting glove? The one he threw into the audience in Long Beach?" "No, I traded it for a case of Becks when Van Halen started to suck." "Yeah, that DIVER DOWN was a weak album." "I traded it when Hagar came aboard. We talked about this before. I liked Van Halen--" "...with Roth and you liked Hagar solo, but you didn't like Van Halen with Hagar. I remember. Neither did I." "So what's your new movie about?" "I tell you if you promise not to tell anybody." "'kay." "I'm just re-releasing SINGLES because nobody saw it the first time." "Smart move. Say could you make me a mix tape." "Sure. What do you like? Winger? Dokken? Faster Pussycat? Poison?"

    The U2 Syndrome

    by jollydwarf

Both U2 and Cameron Crowe sold themselves in the mid '80s on sincerity and urgency. They both got more ambitious in the '90s, each eventually putting out a work ("Pop" and "Vanilla Sky" respectively) that were praised and skewered aplenty for their regurgitation of pop culture and irony. Of course U2 resurrects their 'unforgettable fire' with a more mature take on that original sincerity that earned them acclaim some fifteen to twenty years ago. Now it appears that Crowe is ready to do the same. I'm not surprised. Crowe is more about the glow than the sheen.

    by the_greggins

I cannot begin to express my shock at that comment. HELLO? Are you seriously telling me that Say Anything and Almost Famous were crap? Crowe did an amazing job with Say Anything. Granted, be a John Cusack fan, myself, I'm biased. But I digress. Not the point. Almost Famous was a great film. I pity people with such a warped taste that they didn't like it.
I avoided Vanilla Sky, mostly because I was warned against it. I work in a movie theater and some trusted co-workers called it garbage and told me not to waste my time. But if you can honestly diss say anything I feel really bad for you. What is your idea of a good movie then?
