Image from Paul Thomas Anderson / Adam Sandler PUNCHDRUNK LOVE thingee

Hey folks, Harry here with a behind the scenes picture from the Paul Thomas Anderson drama with comedic influences featuring Adam Sandler. This is one of the great unknown films of 2002. It has one of the most talented and curious directors working in film these days. It also has Adam Sandler, who at best has been inconsistent. He's never really been anywhere near the greatness of say... Tom Cruise in MAGNOLIA or Wahlberg in BOOGIE NIGHTS or... well, you know the characters and actors as well as I do. Ultimately you have to just have faith in PTA till he shows otherwise. Personally, I have faith in him. We'll see.

Double Whammy here....Check out this on the set pic of the top secret
PTA/Sandler film [I still think the combination is very, in a word,
bizarre.] Fall 2002? We'll see.

My faith in this project is restored

    by clare quilty

I had my doubts about this movie, but after seeing this, I know everything will be just fine.
Sandler actually seems to be reading the script.

    Adam Sandler

Sandler is probably the most consistent actor of this generation. Too bad he is consistantly awful.

    Sandler is awesome

    by nflrefugee

He makes hang over movies. The kind of flicks you want to watch on a Saturday morning when you just want to lay on the couch recovering from the night before. No heavy lifting involved. Besides I met Sandler after a show he gave at Umass way back in '92. Nice guy. PT Anderson is one of the most innovative directors out there, this should be memorable.

When my multicolored galaxy of uppers, downers, screamers, laugh

    by the feral kid

...I mean, have you heard the things. Funny thing is, he's got a great vocabulary but once he says "fuck," he's got to string it together with an incomprehensible array of "shit"s, "goddamn"s, and more "fuck"s. He's a funny guy. And just watch the behind the scenes shit on the Magnolia commentary, the fella needs a horse trancquilizer. Anyway, "Sydney" ("Hardeight" what have you) is one of my favourite films hands down and there are only a couple of screen writer/directors out there with his ability to create such amazing dialouge. Others - Todd Solondz, the Coens, uhhhhhhhh, and that's about it. Oh, and the Scorsese dilemna, again, listen to the audio commentaries. PTA tells you what shots and techniques he's stolen but that's like saying that every Noir is a Hawks or Hudson ripoff. The man has taken and learned from one of the greats - and he does it well and he has come into his own. The camera has a musical type rythm to it, just like the dialouge. It flows. And it works. This film has a great cast including Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and ... THE GUZMAAAAAAAAAN!! If you want a summary, go to IMDB. I'm looking forward to the possibilities of one of the best young directors (he's 31!!! HOLY SHIT! - just around Scorsese's age when he hit it big with Taxi Driver) around, one of the BEST SCREEN WRITERS (Schrader, Coens, Solondz, etc.) with a great cast. KICKASS! Does the title entail any inclusion of Radiohead or their music into the final product (Punchdrunk Love) or was the "knuckle" added to avoid a tussle between York and Anderson (that I'd pay money to see)?

Is the title supposed to be an allusion to Radiohead?

    by mr. anderson

There's a Radiohead song called "Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong," so is that where the title comes from, or is "Punchdrunk Love" a more common phrase than I thought? At any rate, I'm still totally baffled by the Sandler/PTA combination. It's either a step up for Sandler or a HUGE step down for Anderson. We shall see.

Despite my disappointment in his movies and CDs, I'm actuall

    by basic alias

It'd be easy for me to trash him if I thought he was an asshole or shamelessly, blatantly evil like Jerry Bruckheimer, but everything I've seen and heard suggests that he's a pretty decent guy who just wants to make flicks with his buddies. I think the problem is that he's never been properly challenged as a writer or performer. You gotta remember that Sandler learned to write on SNL in the ninties. How was he supposed to learn about character development, plot twists and clever dialogue when everyone around him was creating hollow, one-note characters with catch phrases substituting for jokes? The fact that his own one-note characters were consistently entertaining (admit it: you liked Operaman, too) is something of a miracle. I'm hoping that working with a great filmmaker like P.T. Anderson will encourage him to experiment more with his own work, maybe lead him to create an ensemble film instead of the stale vehicles he's been putting out. In the meantime, will someone please ask to him to STOP PRODUCING MOVIES WITH DAVID SPADE AND ROB SCHNEIDER?! PLEASE?!

    by maxcalifornia.

Just can't do it. I don't have the strength within me to fork over money to watch Adam Sandler for two hours. Sorry PT, gonna skip this one. I'll be there for the Brock and Chest exploitation flick though.

WTF are those things on the table?

    by mascan

Looks like toilet plungers without handles . . . a fitting metaphor for most of Sandler's movies so far . . . but with PTA behind the camera, I'm willing to wait until the first screening before I rip this film a new asshole.
