LILO & STITCH Trailer OnLine!!! Pretty Darn Cool!

Published at:  Jan 09, 2002 3:57:45 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I've heard from Sir Etch A Sketch on a phone call about this here Disney flick that it is exactly what needs to come out of Disney right now. It is weird, fun and cool as hell. Apparently it plays like something original and fun as opposed to calculated and bland. Having said that, this trailer is sure to confuse you quite a bit at first, but it has a point. It is very much about putting the image of what the Disney animated modern feature has been... and saying, this is something new and not at all like this. Which is cool. I like that. I've also heard that Dreamworks' SPIRIT is a damn fine film, totally unlike anything we've seen in traditional animation in a long time, if ever. Then there is LILO & STITCH by Disney. What is nice is that both films are not regurgitated standard fairy tales. Both are risks for both studios. Both are attempts to find something else that connects with children that isn't just the same old thing. There are rumors that Michael Eisner is looking to get out of the feature animation game... that he's wanting to turn Disney TV animation... the video sequels into being what represents Disney's Feature and Theatrical Animation department.... Churning out cheap, quickie sequels to classics that they push with a smaller print and advertising buy.... cleaning up on the Video sales and sort of turning feature animation into a Junk Bonds game. MEANWHILE fully developing the feature CG animation into being the real... SHOW-STOPPERS. And I'm not talking about Pixar. Rumor (and I say that again, RUMOR) has it that Eisner is set to screw Pixar a bit due to them not extending their deal with Disney... BUT right now, given the financial woes striking Disney, I can't imagine Eisner being stupid enough to alienating his current golden goose... If he does, I'd love to see Ted Turner structure a big hostile take over of Disney while their stock is weak, so that someone that gives a shit is in control again... or if the glory that is the new APPLE COMPUTER causes 234 million units sold, giving APPLE the superfunds to just take over DISNEY... putting Steve Jobs in Eisner's seat, which would be about the sweetest most wonderful moment in the history of Entertainment. Sigh... a dream is a wish your hear makes... laaah la da dee daaaahhhh...

Hey Harry,

I don't know if this will be news to you, but I thought I might give it a shot. The new Lilo and Stitch teaser is up! It's not much, but you might get a kick out of this :-)

    by toby o notoby

That over 20% of this downloads (and most others) consists of a goddamn MPAA rating followed by a Walt Disney logo? It's kinda okay if they offered a variety of different sizes. But when you're dealing with the slow connection I have at work, it's kinda annoying.

    by clare quilty

    Looks pretty damn good.
I know I'm probably the only one, but what the heck:
Has anybody else noticed, how much Stitch looks like the koala bear from the the french BD "Toto - l'ornithorynque"?
    Quite eerie

    Crank This Baby Up!

    by shub-wankalot

I'm intrigued and amused by the original animated trailer. It holds far more promise than the "Return of Peter Pan" tripe--a thoughtless second-hand mish-mash that threatens to stain my Speedo on the cheap. Oh, the wonderful segue between "Beauty and the Beast" and "Stitch"...very classy, regardless of any scoffing by overzealous critics.

    Colorizing Ted Turner

    by hootdad

I happen to agree with Harry about Turner. Listen, look at this "He colorized classics" thing and understand *why* he did it. Turner was the first to understand the power of the remote. He did many smart things based on this understanding. One, he started shows on TBS at 5 minutes past the half-hour. That way, when people came across his shows while surfing, they were just starting. Second - he colorized movies. Why? BECAUSE HE LOVES THEN! That's right! He *knew* that, if people saw a B&W movie, they would flip by it with their remote. He *wanted* people to see these movies - to love them as much as he does. So he colorized them - not to "improve" them, but just so people wouldn't just flip past them. Hell, I admit it happened to me. I saw a movie that I prpbably would have flipped by if it were B&W - ended up getting sucked in - The Caine Mutiny. Steve Jobs I'm a bit cool on, but Turner taking over Disney would be a dream come true, IMHO.

    My greatest fear...

    by geekzapoppin

My greatest fear is that the behemoth that is AOL/Time Warner will come in and scoop up Disney. Can you imagine what could happen? The horror! It just goes to show you what can happen to an artistic endeavor when money men with no talent take over. Walt, you may have been a racist bastard, but at least you knew how to do animation right!

    The Disney Reich

    by silentjay

I know its just wishful thinking, but there is not one company in the world that could take over Disney. They own more movie studios, more creative rights and more asses than any entertainment company and most blue-chips. AOL-Time Warner may seem like a new big-dog, but they are still the maltese to Disney's rabid mastiff.

I love this trailer and wish there was more of it...at first I thought I had clicked on the wrong link but then Stitch appeared...so cute! Love the fact that they are incorporating some of the old Disney movies into this one...can't wait for this one!

  • What kind of story is this, Harry? You spend so much time on so little. And forget about Disney. This shit is junk. This site is really going downhill fast.

    It's also a little annoying-

    by kent allard

-that Harry always links to the FULL-PAGE trailer instead of the main trailer page. Harry, you may have the T1 connection in Geek Central, but some of us have slower connections and need a smaller size trailer for it to run smoothly. Link to the MAIN TRAILER PAGE, please, and let us choose our own size!

It's about TIME they started advertizing this thing

    by timbenzedrine

Beccause Peter Pan II is just embarassing,'Lilo and Stitch' has got to be one of Disney's best kept secrets, but I can understand why the suits are so reluctant to promote it . It's not a sequel, it's not a retread, the entire look of the film is different from the established Disney "house style". Plus, in an extraordinary move the must be throwing some exectutives into a panic, this story wasn't the result of the usual safe groupthink that produces the usual stuff, the film was concieved, written, designed and directed by the same guy! He's even doing the voice of Stitch! Maybe they are learning someting from Pixar. We can only hope.

    Remember the Magic

    by labrat

2002 Should be a good year for Disney Feature Animation. Lilo is going to be a lot of fun and will be a cash cow for the company. How many folks are going to want a stuffed Stitch? Count me in. In the fall, Treasure Planet will drop and this is an absolutely gorgeous movie. It's Treasure Island in space essentially, but it looks damn good. Of course, Disney has a way of not staying out of their own way so they may pound these films into the PC Disney formula that hasn't worked for the past few years...From what I "know" of these films though, they should both rock.

    Great teaser!

    by cooldan989

I think it takes a lot of courage for a studio like Disney to indirectly admit their movies have been a bit too saccharine, which is what makes this teaser funny. I never thought I'd see the day Disney created a movie like this, let alone make fun of one of their own movies in its teaser. Can't wait! (But if the movie's rated G, I'm not seeing it, because then Disney would just continue to do what they're trying not to do!)

    by blue devil

Disney is one of the most powerful companies on the planet- why aren't they taking advantage of that? They could single-handedly change the way we see animation, but are they? Noooooo. Let's just hope this film is as promising as it appears on the trailer. I really wish they would have taken this approach with Atlantis. It was so close, yet so far.

Monterrey Jack: re: Kida's outfit in ATLANTIS.

    by kiyone

MJ: I agree with you that ROAD TO ELDORADO was grossly underrated, though I personally liked both ATLANTIS and the EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, and you didn't. But your comment about Kida's outfit in ATLANTIS being a rip-off of Chel's in ROAD TO ELDORADO; highly unlikely. From what Mike Mignola and others have said, the character designs and costumes for ATLANTIS were finalized by mid-1997, almost 3 years before ROAD TO ELDORADO was even in theatres. At least someone's claiming that ATLANTIS is a rip-off of something *besides* NADIA for a change! (For the last word on that (non-)controversy, see http://utd500.utdallas.edu/~hairston/atlantis.html or http://www.animerica-mag.com/features/nadiavsatlantis.html , both by NADIA enthusiast Marc Hairston, who would have been about the first person to be upset if, in fact, ATLANTIS had actually been a rip-off of NADIA. _____________________________ Here's an excerpt from Hairston's ANIMERICA article debunking the rip-off claims, that equally applies to the similarities to Chel: Kida vs. Nadia. This looks like the "smoking gun" here: two dark-skinned princesses of Atlantis wearing sexy two-piece outfits. Well, almost. First, the exotic dark-skinned princess is another common stock character from adventure stories (particularly when the dark skinned princess is the person the anglo hero falls in love with). And next, if you're trying to put a female in a revealing outfit but still keep it "family friendly", then the two-piece outfit with bare midriff is the most common solution. Check out Jasmin in Disney's Aladdin, yet another dark-skinned princess of an exotic land wearing a sexy two-piece outfit. (You know, if Atlantis was really just south of Iceland, don't you think they'd wear something a little warmer?))

disney getting bolder and more obscure

    by terry_1978

First Emperor's, then Atlantis...now this...they're becoming more and more like Warner Bros. animation every year...they're finally understanding, I believe. Also, cool choice to not show Lilo and her sister from the front, as it leaves some mystery to their facial designs...what a trailer should be!!

    by kiyone

... Disney has been showing clips since last summer to anyone who takes the tour of the Animation building in Anaheim, so the character designs of Lilo at least is no secret. http://www.laughingplace.com/News-PID504410-504438.asp

    Interesting

    by corky st. clair

This looks like it could be great. Disney lost me with the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I felt that giving the hunchback a bunch of friendly gargoyles kind of ruined that whole living a lonely and solitary existence aspect of the character. Anyway, I actually enjoyed the Emperor's New Groove. I may be biased though since I'm a big fan of John Goodman, David Spade, and Animaniacs. On the subject of Stitch, Has anyone else noticed that he sounds like Nibbler from Futurama? He probably sounds like other similar characters that I can't think of as well. I'm not criticizing, just commenting.
