Father Geek here with the current Euro-AICN Column. First before we get to Robert, Grozilla and ratbert here's a couple of pieces that came directly to Father Geek here at Geek Headquarters in Austin, Texas... Here is a review of LOTR: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING from Switzerland...
Beware! DJ gets carried away and reveals alot about the flick, sooooooo you may not want to read his review if you don't want to see spoilers...
Hello there,
just stumbled over your web page and the review of
that Norwegian guy .... Koola was his name I suppose ?
As chaotic this guy's review reads, but I can only 100% agree to it.
I have seen the movie in a special premiere here in Berne,
Switzerland, on December 12. And I am still dazzled.
If I did a brainstorming and had to take the first word that comes to
my mind to describe this movie, it would be Keannu Reave's line
from "The Matrix" .... BOOOOOAAAAAAAH !
You folks out there who you have not yet seen this film, I doubt you
are able to imagine what this movie is like (OK, if you read the book
you may have an idea on how certain things might look like ... ).
You remember the first time you went to cinema as small kid ?
You remember that it felt so special, so magic ?
That's the feeling I had when I came ot of the movie, as if it had
been the first time again that I have seen the wonders of cinema.
ME ... me, who I am so hard to be impressed about anything ...
, Star Wars Episode I ??? Give me a break.
The story is dull, this childish Jar-Jar Binks creature spoils it totally.
Special effects ??? Yeah right, as if we have not seen that before.
The sword fights won't fire me, I am too good. I know that. He knows that.
I know that he knows are a bit different, but so what ? That's towards the end
of the movie, but so what ? Nothing to be impressed about.
The Fast and the Furious ? I drive a 300 hp sports car myself.
And I swear, my driving style is crazier than what they show there.
So this movie was nothing to be impressed about. How boring ...
For some strange reason I some time ago became member in a special
cinema club here ... I became a "CineCard" member. This "CineCard" club
from time to time organizes special premieres for their members.
And on December 12, they showed "Lord of the Rings" exclusively for us
CineCard members in selected cinemas across our tiny country.
So my brother and his wife, both fanatic about Tolkien, asked me to get
them cards for this event. So I used my membership there and organized
us cards for that evening. I thought "oh well, yet another CGI fest ...
yet another movie with scenes I could render myself on my workstations
anytime I wished to do so ... this sure as hell will be boring for me .... "
I could not have been more wrong.
To make one point clear right from start: This is not exactly the film
to the book.
Many things had to be changed or left away .... and yet the result is
*FANTASTIC*.
Boy, was I impressed !
* * * S P O I L E R W A R N I N G * * *
It all starts with Cate Blanchett's majestic and imperative voice where
she tells
the story of the rings. And while she tells the story, we see brief
scenes of the
events that she is telling us about .... the nine rings that were given
to the high
kings of men, the rings that were given to the dwarfs, the rings that
were given
to the elves ... and the one ring Sauron made for himself. The one ring ...
to rule them all, the one ring to find them, to bring them all, and in
Darkness bind them.
And then ... the epic, apocalyptic battle that takes place within the
first five minutes
of the movie !!! This truly *IS* the mother of all battles. Take
BRAVEHEART,
add the knights in EXCALIBUR (1984) and the epic of GLADIATOR and you're
not even close to a 1/1000th fraction of what you are going to see there.
The battle scene there is *HUGE*. It is mankinds last stand against the
evil forces
of Sauron - and it shows. The only thing that came to my mind when I saw
the human army getting slowly but surely overwhelmed by the many waves of
Orcs that were running towards them, was: "OK guys ... RUN LIKE HELL !"
Even before I could finish that sentence in my mind my breath stopped
(my heart
had stopped pounding the moment the film started ...) ... who the hell
was this
tall black knight with the devilishly formed helmet ... why is everybody
staring at him,
why does everybody stop fighting and make room for this guy ....
and why the hell is he wearing that glowing ring ... unless of course he
is ... Sauron !!!
Oh man, the next second when you see humans and their body parts flying
across
the screen you realize just how ridiculous Darth Vader as "Dark Lord" is.
What did Vader ever do that we have seen, that would qualify him to be
"dark"
let alone "pure evil". OK, he strangulated some of his officers in "The
Empire strikes back",
and then what ? If you want to imagine what a "Dark Lord" really looks
like,
imagine a 2.5 meter tall black knight with devilishly glowing eyes and
an even more
devilishly formed helmet (twisted horns on it's top, truly making it
look like some
sort of Devil's crown ...) whacking with his giant sword at the rows of
human soldiers
in front of him, sending their bodies (and what's left of them) flying
across the big
screen and the survivors screaming in panic, trying to run away ... when
they get
mowed down too by this incarnation of pure evil ... and then the scene
where the king's
son runs to the smashed body of his now dead father (was the first to
get mowed down),
and this giant black hulk going after him to finish him off ....
If my heart had still be beating I think I would have had an infarct
right there !
And the desperated look in the prince's face, when he grabs is father's
smashed
sword and tries to keep Sauron at a safe distance ... and by sort of an
accident
hits Saurons finger on which he wears the ring ... and WOOOOOFFFFF !
Sauron and his Orcs with him go down in an infernal fire .... BOOOAAAAH !
And all this just in the FIRST FIVE MINUTES of the movie !
The next few scenes take place in the Shire, where the Hobbit's live and
from
where the Frodo's journey with the ring starts. And what a journey this is !
The Hobbtis are innocent and naive creatures. After that heart pounding
battle
one might even call the next following hour "boring". I mean those
Hobbits, they
are nice fellows, sure, but they are also childish (not that much as
Jar-Jar Binks
to give you a comparison ... but still ...) but it lies within their
nature. It is exactly
their naivitiy and their childish innocence that makes them ideal for
carrying the ring.
That's something you have to bear in ming throughout the movie:
Whoever gets in contact with the one ring will be seduced by the dark powers
it has ... the more powerful someone is, the greater is the dark side
within that
person, and the easier it gets for the ring to seduce that person.
This is something that truly shows off all the time: The ring's seducive
powers.
You can see it, clearer than in any Theater play or movie I have seen so
far,
how the characters are struggling not to let themselves be seduced by
the ring.
Especially Sean Bean be mentioned here, his character Boromir losing his
sane
mind to the ring and getting obsessed with it, and then realizing in
horror and
disgust that he just has switched over to the dark side is a must see,
especially when he manages to get his act back together again and in a
glorious
comeback rushes to the battlefield to save the very same comrades he just
betrayed and ... ultimately, pays the price for his treachery and like a
Samurai
sacrifices himself for the cause, but not before sending a far greater
number
of Orcs dead to the ground. What a scene !
His final scene, where he lies in the arms of Viggo Mortensen and apologizes
for having been seduced by the ring, had everyone in the audience
producing tears
in their eyes ... even me. And I thought I could not be impressed, huh ?
I skipped a lot here. Also worth mentioning is the angelic appearance of Or the scene in Lothlorien, where we meet Cate Blanchett as Galandriel, Also a must-mention: The battle scenes in the dark dungeons of But there are not just battles. There is so much more. The longer I write on this mail the more difficult it gets to keep things in And I thought I have seen it all and nothing could impress me anymore. I actually don't like elves, dwarfs and all that crap. I never liked But there I was, I arrogant little moron, thinking that this would be Not only that I liked this fairy tale Peter Jackson put into the movie, And now I am totally bedazzled and cannot believe that I got to wait This is gonna be a tough year. Reports in the Irish press claim that the sexy 19-year-old Dublin singer and actress is being head hunted by Warner Brothers for the movie, which stars Keanu Reeves, Lawrence Fishburne and Carrie Anne Moss. The reports claim that Sam will take over the role left vacant by the tragic death of the RnB star Aaliyah, who died during the summer in a plane crash. Aaliyah's character Zee was due to have a small role in Matrix Reloaded, and had a major role in Matrix Revolutions. It had been rumoured on the Web that Aaliyah had not filmed any scenes and had only practised some fight sequences. Sam is due for her first bout of film stardom next year when the long awaited Reamworks/Warner Bros The Time Machine comes out across the world. The singer is currently working on her singing career and is hoping her latest single "Lately" makes it into the charts at the end of this week. Michael Caine is to star in a new movie in Ireland according to reports in the Irish press called The Actors. The film will be made in Ireland's Ardmore Studios at a cost of 5 million pounds and will be co-produced by the Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, the man behind Interview with a Vampire and Michael Collins. The film is expected to be directed by the Irish playwright Conor McPherson, who wrote the script for the Irish movie I Went Down, which was the movie that gave Brendan Gleeson his first big break. The Actors will put Caine back working with Jordan's film firm The Company of Wolves Production Company for the first time since the 1986 movie Mona Lisa. The film will be made around the same time in Ireland as Intermission a new Irish drama, which looks set to star the Irish star of Harts War Colin Farrell. Acclaimed Irish film producer Noel Pearson is to make a film based on the life of the late Thin Lizzy lead singer Phil Lynott and it will star Holly Hunter. The mother of the famous rocker Philomena Lynott has spoken to the Irish press about how happy she is with Pearson's choice of actress to play her. Irish actress Elaine Cassidy, who recently stared with Nicole Kidman in The Others, is to play a young Philomena Lynott while the world renowned actress, Holly Hunter, is to play an older Philomena in the £10 million pound movie. Speaking to the press in Dublin Philomena said she was overjoyed at the choice of star who will play her. "I'm chuffed. Both of them are beautiful women and I've been walking around with my hand in the air since I heard." The name of the actor chosen to play Phil Lynott is being kept secret and it is rumoured that he is a unknown stage actor from Dublin. Liv Tyler as Arwen. The scene where she appears first is an orgy of light
and grace, when she steps out of this mind blowing halo effect and with her
tender voice says .... "Frodo ..." (aaahhh, I wish she could do that
again and
say my name instead ....
and she too gets seduced by the ring for a short moment, but manages to
resist and remain the good angelic Elve she is .. and not turn into a
Banshee (which she does for a brief moment ... was pretty scary).
Moria ... OK, the cave troll is clearly a CGI creature, but you very soon
forget about this, the battle is just too intense. Have a look at the
trailers
that are floating around in the internet and you might get an idea about it.
Spectacular. Imagine yourself be locked in a cave, with nothing to defend
yourself but a sword and a bunch of angrily screaming Orcs rushing into
the room where you hoped to hide from them ... Remember what I said when
Sauron first appeared ? "RUN LIKE HELL".
Only, in a cave, there is no place you could run to ... it's either them
or you.
That's my idea of a claustrophobic nightmare, and Jackson gives you
exactly that.
The battle is intense, and what you see on-screen are not Sean Bean or
Viggo Mortensen playing their roles and fighting a battle in which every
moment
and every movement has been planned in intricate details by a choreographer,
what you see are Boromir and Aragorn, Legolas and Gandalf, Gimli, Merry,
Pip, Sam
and Frodo fighting with the courage of the desperate to get the hell out
of this trap
into which they just stepped. There are two types of battle scenes in
cinema:
"Aaaah, nice choreography" ... and "Choreography ... wtf you talking
about ???
this thing is for real !!! Either they fight or they get skinned alive
.... "
As you can guess, the battle scenes in LOTR belong into the latter category.
For you romantics out there, there is a very very romantic scene between
Arwen (Liv Tyler) and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), where they both speak
Elvish ... they almost whisper it and it sounds soooooo infinitely sweet
and poetic.
It is this scene, where Arwen offers Aragorn to give up her Elvish
immortality
for him .... she'd rather share one life with him than all of eternity
without him.
Can there be a sweeter way to say "I love you" than that ???
And while she whispers these words we hear Enya's angelic voice sing
a ballad (title nr. 10 on the movie soundtrack, called "The Council of
Elrond"),
the scene is so infinitely sweet, poetic and romantic that it again almost
breaks your heart. I saw lots of couples in the audience holding hands
during that scene, even one couple who seemed to have an argument
going on before the film started (thank God they shut up during the movie
or I would have fed them to the zombie-like Uruk-Hai monsters ...),
this scene litterally oozes poetic romance and love. I can imagine
William Shakespeare rotating in his grave at 9000 rpm just to get out
of there for a short moment to see this one scene which could have been
taken from Romeo and Juliet .... "I'd rather share one life with you than
all of eternity alone without you ..." A sentence to be remembered.

Hi people. The Harry Potter storm, after devasting many countries worldwide, hit this week in Italy and France. In my country the young wizard collected 11 billion lires (more or less $5M) in its first weekend, marking a new record and erasing the Hannibal precedent one. Even in France, as you can read below in the Grozilla reportage, it was a huge hit.
I just hope that here LOTR will make at least the same scores, even if it will be released only from january, 18. More than Lotr and Harry Potter correlated news, we get in this column very important stuff about movies such as Matrix (2 & 3) and Ali and people as George Romero, Ingmar Bergman, Michael Caine and Holly Hunter. screens here. Knowing that the wizard kid is on more than 850 screens, that
Atlantis hit almost the same number, that the hobbits will surely get at
least the same, this means than quite half of the french screens will be
dedicated to three films for some time. Knowing that each year the number of
releases here is increasing ( 521 in 2001, an average of 10 by week!), that
also means unfortunately that some "smaller" films can't reach most of the
average french cities. I live in one of the five best equipped in terms of
screens in France and even there films like Larry Clark's Bully (released in
France on dec 12th) couldn't hit any screen. Paradox: this film is the one
who gets most coverages by weekly and daily newspaper this week! By some
simple deduction you could imagine how many "fragile" films will never be

a huge fan of some John Hughes movies from the 80’s, but since, nothing but
lousy stuff). Anyway this american virus seems to spread in France: on dec.
26th will be released some new breed of comedy, a kind of American pie à la
française. It’s called Sexy Boys and is indeed as trash (even more) than its
model. But as useless too. As I'm asking myself about why filmakers are
interested in this kind of comedy here we get a few words from the director,
Stephane Kazandjian and some of his cast:
made as a feature. I was told it wasn’t personal enough. I started to write
another one about pals of mine from the time of high school. I transformed
it on a teenage comedy , the kind made by americans. I had two wishes :
speak about my pals and tie it to some genre who didn¹t exists in french
cinéma. I grew up with that kind of films and wanted to do it with french
actors, french situation. I didn’t grew up with fondling love of Citizen
kane but with stuff like Karaté kid, Back to the future, John Hughes films.
This was my introduction to cinema without asking myself if this was a noble
genre or not, that’s what made me love cinema. For my first feature I wanted
to find back what I felt when I was fourteen, discovering those films. Sexy
Boys isn’t a marketed film just a genre film. When you deal with genre,
you’ll always deal with its codes.
from the heart . I’m maybe a bit retard but what’s in this film talks to me,
makes me laugh. I never thought it in terms of "well, that’s what kids
wants to see now, I have to do the same ". Nowadays I go see stuff like
American Pie or Kevin Smith’s, and I’m enjoying it. Sexy Boys ain’t a
message film but just a film about some generation with some guys reflexions
: what’s to be a guy now : having a dick sized like Rocco Siffredi’s ? Get
laid with the most of girls? or Obtaining a Ph.D ? No more, no less.
That’s the kind of questions late teenage guys ask themselves these days.
subject. That because I knew the guys inspiring the characters I was
writing. It was more like a chronique. The first title was Twenty-something.
Man, you can feel the difference with Sexy boys !
I realized by rewriting it again and again that all I wanted to mean in the
first draft was still there, and maybe in a more efficient way.
I learned that doing scenes for developing the characters doesn’t always
bring more to the subject. Today, I like films like the Farrelys ones ; I
wanted to go in that way without erasing my purpose. I prefered build my
script from a structure imposed by my producers and stuff it with what I
wanted to say, instead of making some film led by the pretentious feeling I
was an auteur.
it?
film thinking: well, what haven’t done the americans that I can make ?
In France we can joke about stuff they can’t but I don’t wanna make films
pro or anti-american way of life. Sexy Boys isn’t a cut & paste from
American pie, more its adaption in the french way of life. One part of the work
was to find how to adapt on our ground the Campus where all those movies
stands. Making some of our high school habits looking like american campus?
It would have been real dumb. Better searching what this kind of place
allowed in terms of characters, of narration. That’s why, for example, my
characters are older than thay might have been in an american teenage
comedy.
taken from your older generation
up some references that can resonate to it, like this cameo from Sylvia
Kristel or this Bonnie Tyler song in the soundtrack. It wasn’t interesting
to stick on the 2000’s, I didn’t want to use only Britney Spears or Daft
Punk’s titles for the mood.
moronics…
the shyness and sense of decency at that age, you’re always moronic. That’s
just because we don’t know shit about sex, because we’re trying to deal with
it. Looking back when I was fifteen or sixteen talking about sex, I was
definitely dumb. This film could have spoken of other subjects like Aids
or unemployment, or the fact we are the condom generation but that wasn’t
the purpose. We wanted to make kids laugh. In his point of wiew, we showed
people partying, getting drunk and talking about sex. But that’s for sure a
true side of our generation!
like you and Teenagers is that the firsts don’t need to identify themselves
with characters. At this age you’re supposed to be an adult. Teenagers need
marks. They don’t need to analyze this film and just pick some " pensée
unique " from it. Maybe one guy will get out of this film with some hint of
how to deal with his sexuality. And maybe it could be the right one.
view than a female one? Would this film has been more provocative if told
from a female point of view?
eighteen than boys at the same age. I started asking myself about those way
younger. Of course we could have made jokes in this film about size of
breasts instead of size of dicks, but sexuality for a girl is definitively
not the same than for some guy.
express some taboos. Some stuff could of course be shocking for some people,
but it’s anyway far less rude than what we actually done when we were
teenagers. Made for a femal point of view, this film could absolutely not be
made the same way. It would have needed to be written, acted and edited in a
different way. How to talk in movies about masturbation of orgasm for
teenage girls? Audience isn’t ready to see female teenage wanking and
having pleasure from it in comedy.
That's all for today, see you next week

Man I'm really not at all sure about the whole accidentally cutting the ring off of Sauron's finger and then all the bad guys melt scene. That's just too Mummy Returns. And I didn't even know Bergman was still alive!!

Big Sean Bean fan now....it's official.
-
The Sharpe series is very good, if you can get past the really horrendous electric guitar incidental music in the first few episodes. Bean has a lot more opportunities to stretch and pull from a wider range of emotions. It just gets better as it barrels along, although I found the Waterloo episode to be a bit of a disappointment. Nice jacket though. Sharpe's Eagle is really good, and so's Sharpe's Sword. And Sharpe's Battle. Sharpe's Gold is definitely the only really bad one. I would have just skipped it if I had known. I think he married at least two of the women he co-starred with on that show.
-
I'll never forget the first time I laid eyes on Liz Hurley's breasts. I'm sure they were in Sharpe's Rifles. Fantastic knockers really.
-
Why not just paint Britney black and put her in the Matrix?? Mumba has not proved herself worthy to star in the Matrix Sequels.. Haven't these been already made in Australia so how can she be in them???

"Special effects ??? Yeah right, as if we have not seen that before"
You are a dingus.
I am aware that LOTR will likely be a very good movie. But stop with sucking of so much cock. Its almost embaressing reading this stuff.
Yeah sure the FX in TPM were nothing special. Give me a fucking break. It still pisses all over just about everything else CGI in every movie since it was released.
So you hated Jar Jar, so did most people. But it was 3 years ago. You've gotta let some things go.
Oh and I'm all for female comedy masturbation scenes.
In fact I demand there to be at least one in every new film released. -
The Thin Lizzy frontman needs to be played by a high profile actor in order to get bums on seats... This could be a great movie if it really captures the age and the buzz in Dublin at that time.
Lynott is Legend... -
is not only that you have to love LOTR, you have to hate TPM too! Does this guy thinks that saying that he is hard to impress, actually is of any interest to anyone? since when the fast and the furious is something impressive? this guy pretends to be a been-there-done-that about evrything to justify his love for the movie and is just laughable. if you tell me you love it just plain and simple I would actually believe you. no need to say evry four lines how hard and tough and mature you are. because you arent. "I arrogant little moron" I agree. LOTR will be awesome btw!!!

In recent years Bergman has lived his cinema life trough others - notably Liv Ullman but I think there's still enough demons in there to make him come backfor the big screen...Phil Lynott biopic? Greatness! Roisin dubh!

Do we really live in a world where Romero can't scrape toget

If it wasn't for LOTR opening so soon I think I'd have to take my own life.

Nice how he worked in a pointless reference to "The Fast and the Furious" so he could slip in that HE has a 300hp car and HIS driving style is way crazy! What exactly does LOTR or TPM have to do with the Fast and the Furious? Oh and I love the fact that he could create the same effects in the Phantom Menance. Just give him a workstation. Whatever. Review the film, not your ego.
