Today... Is BUTT-NUMB-A-THON Day! The Greatest Film Show On Earth!!!

Published at:  Dec 08, 2001 1:41:49 AM CST

Hey Folks, Harry here 12 hours away from BUTT-NUMB-A-THON!

This year celebrates this fat carcass of a boy turning 30 years young. It's been one of those "Tale of Two Cities" years for me. Professionaly it has been my strongest year. Health wise it has been a bad year. But on the other hand, the new health problems have finally made me realize that enough was enough. My moment of enlightenment if you will. By BNAT 4 I'll be 100 lbs lighter, I'm already 45 lbs depleted. Even at BNAT 3 I'll be chewing on lettuce and steamed chicken. Ah, and I like it!

However, the richness and sweetness that I'm going to share with that amazing audience at the Alamo Drafthouse tomorrow beginning at noon and going to (and perhaps past) noon Sunday... Well, it really is going to be something I believe no one in attendence will ever be able to forget.

I have 4 films that have never been seen by a public audience before. This is the best line up that I've ever had. Might very well be the best BUTT-NUMB-A-THON that I'll ever throw. It would take a lot to top it, and if what I'm hatching for 2003 works out... I'll bag this year and sell it cheap next year, cuz this Pimp has a big line-up of delights that can be had at $10 for a double dozen 360s of a dial.

Will the audience feel the pain? Oh... Yes and No. Like this year, their brains will be elated, their asses will know agony.

Of importance to you. If you can get to the Drafthouse EARLY EARLY this morning (Saturday December 8th) and can get in the first 7 spots... You have a chance (A CHANCE) of getting in. Tim has told me of a couple of cancellations. I don't know how many seats we'll have, but I do know that due to holiday troubles, fears of planes and alleged crimes against the nation committed by known ticket holders... They've had to bow out.

NOW... The doors open at 11:15am Saturday Morning. 15 minutes before showtime - 12 Noon, empty seats will be filled by those standing outside the Alamo Drafthouse. And the show should (TIM WILLING) start at NOON!

Now, you're probably wondering what I'm going to show. Well, I'm not going to say... In fact some things that are being shown will never be revealed due to death and lawyer threats. HOWEVER, in the past I have created a list of films that I recommended watching today to create your own Personal BUTT-NUMB-A-THON for you and your friends.

This is not what I'm showing, but it is somehow related in a weird Freudian manner to what I'm showing in this order...

1. IT CONQUERED THE EARTH

2. THE PROJECTIONIST

3. BUCKET OF BLOOD

4. THEM

5. THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH

6. BRIGADOON

7. WIZARD OF GORE

8. ALICE IN WONDERLAND (XXX)

9. LITTLE CIGARS

10. THE KILLING FIELDS

11. BIRTH OF A NATION

Like I said... There is a slight relation between the films I am showing and would be a fun list to show sometime... perhaps in the future.

Well folks... it's 12:33am now... I haven't got long to sleep, and I have an eternity to be awake... Well my friends... If I see you at the Drafthouse tomorrow, we will have bloody fun. If not, I hope to see you there in the future, because that is where we'll be spending the rest of our livesssss....

Well I flew in from Mexico City last year for this, butt failed to get tickets this year. Butt I do know some of the audience members in this scene. To the left of Harry from our point of view is a green Kubla Khan his nephew, to the right is Sister Satan his sister, next to her is former Euro editor Edgard, right above the headgeek is Annette Kellerman, way up top is Latin-AICN's Coffin Joe Jr, The sickly dude with the plasma bottle is Hercules the Strong, and the guy in the brown hat is Editor of the Weekly Recap Elston Gunn. That's all I know. Happy Buttday Harry!!! From your buddy Indio Fernandez.

    Getting ready for bnat

    by the tao of joe

Well, apparently no one wanted to hang out with this north carolinian. I spent my entre day in austin yesturday alone. What does that say about you Austinites? I mean really, if you guys ever wanted to see a film being made in north carolina, as many in fact are, i woukd be more than willing to chill with any of you. But seriously, austin is all right. It is sort of a rusty burg on the outskirts though. Seriously, I thought Mel gibson was going to jump out and beat the shit out of some people, MAD MAX style. I guess its because I come from RALEIGH I GUES TO EVERYNAN THERE IS A KIND OF PLACE THEY CALL HOME. A post apacalyptic warzone is just not my kind of place. The alamo was great, caught a showing of mr. sinus theater 3000. It was this group of people who did sort of a ns3k deal, with improv singing in the middle. They watched christmas specials, and it was hilarious. THEY REACHED THAT POINT IN THE SHOW WHERE I laughed to the point of dizziness. No joke. WELL< its time I had some breakfast, and taken a shower. I hope to see some cool movies and people at bnat,

    Birth of a Nation

    by mcvamp

I get the feeling that "Birth of a Nation" is Harry's Lord of the Rings equivalent. "Nation" was the most spectacular and powerful film of its time, and despite the insanely racist overtones, it was considered the first true landmark of cinema. Call me crazy, but even though he hasn't yet seen it (or so he claims,) I think Harry is hoping that to have the same impact. Is he setting himself up for disappointment? Nah. No matter what happens, in the end, they're only movies, and whether they're good, bad, ugly, or just mediocre, there's always something to talk about afterwards. I hope "Fellowship" kicks all of our asses. Then, I hope "Attack of the Clones" kicks all of our asses. And then "Spider-Man"--then the "Matrix" sequels--then...

    BNAT movies rocked!!

    by captain fantasy

Everyone has to see the Majestic if you are a lover of film. Damn this movie blew me away, but probably not as much as Vanilla Sky did... Holy shit guys, if you liked Total Recall and Fight Club, you have to see this movie NOW!!! It's great..! Very unexpected for me to like this film because I pretty much am sick of all the people that were the stars... but they all were fantastic! As for all the people saying that LOTR was going to play for sure, unfortunately it sadly did not. But I think the replacement movie (silent, from the 30's... VERY RARE) was an excellent replacement. But the whole night was worth it getting to see the most beautiful print of King Kong I've EVER seen (Harry said it was from the official film master from the studio vaults and damn was it awesome!) Happy Birthday Harry! Thanks for everything!

    by kiyone

It was preempted on the East Coast by football, but I have Bell ExpressVu satellite, so I was able to watch it 3 hours later on the Seattle Fox affiliate. It was hilarious, though the plot twist ending reminded me of a certain episode of Red Dwarf. I also watched a brilliant episode of the Simpsons today, but it was a syndicated rerun from season 4 (the one when Homer quits drinking); the new episode of the Simpsons was quite awful. Geez, if an NFL game is going to run long, why can't they suspend play for an hour at 7 p.m. Eastern and then play the rest during the Simpsons, so that we wouldn't miss anything worth watching?

BNAT: A list of films and reactions.

    by vegas

First of all, I have to say that this BNAT was just absolutely wonderful. As much fun as I had last year, the choices for the films this year blew BNAT 2000 away. The sequencing was perfect, the introductions were the best I've ever seen for any films ever, and the way Harry just played the audience like an instrument...brilliant Harry. You would have made William Castle proud. Anyways, the festival started off with FIEND WITHOUT A FACE, a wonderfully hokey 50s sci-fi flick about killer brains, the kind that only come from coal-burning "atomic" plants on United States Air Force bases in Manitoba. Noted for the character name of Major Cummings. This was followed up by THE MAJESTIC, easily far and away my favorite film of the night. Frank Darabont made us all cry, and it was the perfect film to get everyone into the spirit of just loving movies, as if they weren't already. This was followed by the little-known gem entitled ROCK ALL NIGHT, starring a young Dick Miller (the old guy in GREMLINS) as the coolest motherfucker on earth. Dick Miller's favorite movie, it turns out, is KING KONG, a beautiful print of which was shown immediately thereafter. Again Harry, your gift for sequencing these films is above all comparison. After we watched King Kong, we all took a nap, and I personally dreamt about old Beatles albums. Then we all woke up. After waking up, we watched CABIN IN THE SKY, an old musical that although very good, was my least favorite showing of the night. CABIN IN THE SKY was followed by BLOOD FEAST 2: ALL U CAN EAT, directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis (sp?), his first effort in a quarter of a century. Seriously, I cannot recommend this film highly enough. The subtle plotting evoked an atmosphere of creeping malevolence, quite like that in Chinatown, and the characterization was so rich yet so gradual that each person was renedered indelibly in the mind and ranked with such screen luminaries as Charles Foster Kane, Vito Corleone, and Max Fischer. We then had a contest for free dvds in which people had to re-enact scenes from Cameron Crowe films. This contest was indisputably won by Cpt. Muffy, whose bravery and confessional courage must be applauded. We then watched THE TERROR OF TINY-TOWN, an all midget western. I repeat, this was an all midget western. The festival concluded with what I believe is the greatest film of all time. One that blew all of my expectations away, and judging from the trailer, how could it not? The action in the trailer was so astounding, so explosive, that one could have absolutely no doubts that the film itself would deliver. After much deliberation, I can say the hype was warranted. STUNT ROCK is indeed the best film ever made. It had stunts. It had rock. It was...STUNT ROCK. Harry, wherever you got this film needs to put this fucker out on dvd, NOW. And that dvd had better have that trailer. What a way to end the festival, by making STUNT ROCKERS!!! out of all of us. Harry, I salute you and your festival, I had a blast, and I cannot thank you enough for putting my Saffy on the list. I don't get to see her nearly enough, and that was just the best gift I think I have ever gotten, and all I can say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Now, if you will all excuse me, I am going to begin a letter-writing campaign to the makers of STUNT ROCK!

    The Majestic

    by toranaga

BNAT was lots of fun. Gotta say though, the Majestic was for me, hands down, the worst film of the whole thing. Pretty sad, since Darabont showed in his intro how big of a geek he is. Man, that guy had such childlike enthusiasm for film, it was cool to see. But unfortunatly, The Majestic was terrible. I havent seen a movie in a very long time that was so obviously trying to pull my heartstrings. You could just smell the sappy music cue comeing a mile away. But then again, it was almost always there. Sappy, sappy, sap-a-sap, crappy-crap. And everyone who says this is Jim Carrey's breakthrough role...what? Isn't that what everyone said about the Truman Show and Man on the Moon? I thought he was much better in those movies than in this. I thought there was way too much over acting in this movie from everyone. My final thought about this movie is that, very much like the Truman Show, many people will ballyhoo about how great this film is and Oscar this and Oscar that.Butafter it is skipped over by the academy and everyone is done bitching about how it was robbed, it will be all but forgotten in 6 months. I would have much rather watched Pirates of the Sierra. And anyone who says this was the best film at BNAT, man, open your eyes! There was much better. Well, everything was much better. In closing, the only thing left to say is STUNT ROCK! STUNT ROCK! STUNT ROCK!!!!!

The POWER of Stunt, The GLORY of Rock: The Majesty of STUNT ROCK

    by pallando blue

My God, you nailed it perfectly on the head, Vegas. I didn't think it was just my drained constitution that made that particular cinema experience a lifelong memory. Good Lord. Fucking STUNT ROCK. What a climax to an amazing festival. My head is still swimming with it all, as I sit here at work 2,000 miles away. (Only half an hour late this morning!) I so want to prop one foot on my desk here, work the air-mike-stand, and wail "STUNT ROCKAAHS" in that same screech (followed by a stage explosion) that Robert Plant, Rob Halford, and Chris Cornell can only dream of. *** One or two brief bits Vegas left out. Even before "Fiend Without a Face" started, Tim... ?? damn, forgot the last name, Not the Drafthouse owner Tim, he's the Kiwi who runs the... shit! That film festival, The "Truly Disturbing" or "Weird and (Something) Film Festival" that's been promo-ed on AICN before, please, someone fill in my blanks. [I still can't think straight! Head full of STUNT ROCKING!] Anyway, the BNAT began with Tim's birthday present to Harry, a good clean print of some high-quality '60s lesbian porn in 3-D. As Tim explained, it was Harry's present, not ours, so only Harry got 3-D glasses; we got 4-breasted ghost women talking dirty and moaning. A most pleasant time was still had by all. Harry's audible review: "Best, Film, Ever." *** Later in the night, there was a late-70s Oscar-nominated claymation short, "Mountan Music," which seemed to be a biting commentary on the hazards of modern musicians abandoning their folk-country roots for the self-indulgences of bloated prog-rock. Timely, and timeless. I hope Emerson, Lake & Palmer saw that. *** Anyone who's seen The Terror of Tiny Town would have to agree that "Barbershop Penguin" would be a killer AICN handle. Also, I apologize for not remembering his name [brain still reeling--from STUNT ROCK! STUNTS! ROCK! STUNT ROCK!] but one of the actors in TTOTT (and The Wizard of Oz!) visited us for a great talk and Q&A after the film, and signed autographs after. Thank you, sir! However, he had no insights regarding the penguin. *** And same goes to the makers of "Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat"! Thank you all for your appearance, Q&A, and anecdotes--I will take your advice. I will never visit a slaughterhouse. Ever. *** Tailenders if you're reading this, I am ducking back into hiding until the 20th or so. Sweet Crapping Manwe, this place is CRAWLING with shit I can't read! (On the front page alone! The Tail End may be no more!) But I had to pop up here and say THANK YOU to Harry and Tim, and everybody involved with BNAT-3! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! All attendees should give another big round of applause to the staff, who worked their asses off for us! Thanks, all a ya! *** Hey, Vegas, where's that petition?

    by monkeykungfu

Anthony from www.isff.co.nz played the 3-D short.

Trailers: I didn't know how anyone could top the trailers from Lady in the Cage or They Called Her One Eye... but the trailers for The Killer Shrews, Scratch Harry, and Stunt Rock were killer.

I'm still processing the movies we saw... I'm like Buster Keaton in Sherlock Jr. only like Buster Keaton in that movie who hadn't slept in 5 days... Cabin in the Sky was the only movie that felt outta place... though I imagine most of us might've never seen the movie had Harry not shown it... I'd wish they'd have played something like Time and Tide or Chinese Ghost Story or perhaps even Shiri.

Coolest moments of the fest had to be people yelling out throughout STUNT ROOOCCCCKKKKKAAAAA or STUNNNTT ROCKKKKKEERRRRR see also: STUNT ROCK! Oh and of course Frank making whomever was filming him run like Olympic hurdler madman over some parking lot bump-things as he made a mad dash to show everyone where Porky Pig did his famous studio door thing.

What were those vids playing during the breaks?

    by hibergeron

Question for Harry and/or any BNAT3 attendess who might know:

Anyone know the names/titles of the videos that were playing on screen between the films? Specifically:

-The x-rated Star Wars-esque parody with the Dragonball Z Goku , Sailor Moon, Chewbacca-lookalike running around the death star and engaging in illicit sex with pretty much everything, including the trash compactor.

I must see this with sound and in its entirety!

-What wass the cool-as-fuck clip shown after Blood Feast 2 - with the live-action puppets sword-fighting and doing wild-ass kung-fu and throwing fireballs and shit. I wanna see this too.

The live-action puppets doing kung-fu and shooting fireballs sounds like the Taiwanese film "Legend Of The Sacred Stone", hyped by Harry & Co. about a year ago or so here on AICN. The DBZ/Sailor Moon/Star Wars XXX parody is almost certainly "Star Ballz", a film that attracted some fame recently because George Lucas has taken legal action against it.

    How BNAT3 changed my life...

    by electric tsunami

Well I'm putting an end to my lurking and have selected a moniker that I can only hope that I live up to.

Since attending I've already scored tickets to a press screening of The Shipping News tomorrow and I've got word on a free preview of The Royal Tenenbaums hosted by Wes Anderson (in Houston Saturday night at the MFA).

This is becoming like a celebrity roast with its own traditions: porn, premieres, and film figures. Scratch Harry...

Remember when the front page was frozen for three weeks with a picture of Pee Wee Herman on it? I remember refreshing my browser over and over again only to return to Mr. Reuban's grinning face, learing maniacally back at me. Good times.

    Someone's pulling our collective leg

    by archdiver

If we are to suppose LOTR was STUNT ROCK, how can one poster write so much praise for it, yet state that THE MAJESTIC was his favorite? I mean, if you got secret sneak peak at the biggest film event of the millenium (at least so far), how could a Jim Carrey flick top that? And none of the trailers were what I would call 'explosive.' Enthralling, enchanting, exciting and few other words that start with e, but not explosive. I think they're fucking with us... but I've been wrong before...

Do not underestimate the power of Stunt Rock...

    by gurglesnap

I'm sorry, but if you weren't there, you simply cannot understand the primal adrenaline that flows during a viewing of Stunt Rockers. I know. I was there. Seat 513. I expected my butt to be numb, but when it was all said and done, it had instead been stunt rocked. Harry is a tricky fellow.....
