MINORITY REPORT Trailer Online

Published at:  Dec 07, 2001 1:06:13 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here. Spielberg's MINORITY REPORT Trailer is aces awesome. Now it doesn't show much, but what it does show is a striking visual style and a hint of what is to come. The screenplay from Scott Frank for MINORITY REPORT has been rumored by a very close source to be brilliant. It is hard hard hard science fiction and miles better than the draft which everyone has had for eons now. Though while watching the trailer I did have a flash of LOGAN'S RUN cross me noggin... Am I alone? Of course, I turn 30 in less than a week, time to renew...

It does look cool, but I have heard from some effects house people that it was not looking so great. And what is with the all blue look? Did ET Boy say, hey the Matrix was all green, let's do ours all blue. That will be neat. We shall see. FOTL rules.

Next year is shaping up to be a great year at the movies. With movies like Black Hawk Down, Blade 2, Spiderman, LotR 2, Harry Potter2 and now... Minority Report! I have to admit that I wasn't very excited about this movie until now because of my experience with AI this past summer. Spielberg doesn't normally disappoint, but I just had a bad feeling about this project. The script reviews have been mostly negative and Spielberg hasn't convinced me that he can tackle sci-fi very well (Close Encounters not withstanding). Cheers to a great year at the movies next year!

    by roderick jaynes

You can't tell alot from the trailer, but what we see looks interesting. The cinematography looks beautiful. I can understand why they are using the blue filter. It gives everything a sense of coldness that is often associated with the future. The plot is very good, we'll just have to see how they handle it. But really, you can't expect it to be bad coming from a guy like Spielberg. I hope they surprise us with the ending. Either the actor with the largest part other than Cruise set him up, or he will end up commiting the murder as a side effect of being accused of a future murder (Hollywood does love its irony).

It looks cool but I'm not getting a sense of "must see this now" from the trailer and I don't like the tag and the "oneliner" "Everybody runs" why would they say that when at the beginning they showed a guy getting arrested with no resistence. Although I did like the scene with Tom's eyes all wrapped in gauze, I do want to see what that leads too. just my impressions

"Spielberg hasn't convinced me that he can tackle sci-fi very well (Close Encounters not withstanding)"

Thats like saying Scorcese can't do boxing movies if you don't count Raging Bull. AI was flawed, but it was still better than 99 percent of the other Sci-Fi crap floating around the Hollywood shitter.

Looks good to me. Even though I didn't love A.I., I thought it had some greatness in it, just not all the way through. It's just cool to see Spielberg back doing sci-fi films. The only thing that worries me is that this film might be Spielberg's first 'journeyman' work, in that, while it does have a distinct visual style, I don't really see the Spielberg stamp yet. Maybe that's a good thing. Who knows, but I'll reserve judgement until I see the actual movie.

Does Spielberg have an eye fetish? First it was Haley Joel's eyes in the A.I. trailer and similarly with Minority...he has a close-up of the phycic's eyes with blurring light around it!

But that movie looks really interesting! He can definately direct action!! He won't go kiddie with this one! I hope!

Somebody mentioned that there's not Spielberg "stamp" yet to be seen. Well, it's because the Spielberg-thing these days is not that easy to point out. Spielberg-bashers jump at any chance to prove that he's a hack: A.I. was too sentimental! It wasn't, it was downright cruel. A.I. production design looked dated! The Flesh Fair or what was it called was a bit madmax, granted was a bit weak, but otherwise A.I. looked great. Anyway, the thing is, look at the performances in this guy's films. That's the stamp. The whiz-kid has became actor's director in this age where everybody tries to be the whiz-kid for the new decade. Minority Report looks promising and the idea of "future cops! is awesome. Thanks once again mister Dick. Now somebody film VALIS.

    by arzak

Because it looks the way A.I. should have looked. That shot of Cruise getting out of the "pod" has 2001 written all over it. You don't use a Kubrick treatment as a practice run, you use it as a chance t o sweat blood and create something NEW and UNFORGETTABLE. Why wait to be stylistically daring until AFTER you are filming a so called homage to Kubrick. Despite a few amazing images A.I. just felt like HOOK in the future, ie. claustrophobic, tacky and smug. Minority Report actually looks like it could be Spielberg's best movie in years, with him giving genre material and popcorn movies the respect they deserve to be made with. Temple of Doom (despite it's obvious annoyances) was the last great popcorn movie Spielberg made because he wasn't dividing his mind between "serious" films and "fun" films.... he used to merge them both and that's what made him a great director in the first place.

I mean, it would just as easy to send them a "Don't Kill So-and-so" e-mail or even show up at the scene and just say no. At least in cases where it's a spur of the moment anger thing that won't be reproduced. Or, could they send him a warning, maybe, and if he still was gonna do it then arrrest him? While the trailer looks good, I'm not getting my hopes up. I haven't been happy with the way he has ended his films, as of late. He is a different filmmaker than he used to be. Close Encounters and ET both ended on a downer, after the inevitable separation of the characters involved, and it was realistic.
At that point in his career he didn't feel the need to tie everything into a pretty bow at the conclusion of a film.

    Unbreakable was an awesome movie!

    by neovsmatrix

IMHO, Unbreakable was one of the best movies of last year. Definitely my favorite movie. It's best not to get any preconceptions about a movie, especially when you're not the one making it. You're supposed to let the filmmaker take you to where he or she wants to go with the film. That's what great filmmaking is all about. A film that just goes in one direction and can be utterly predictable in terms of what it's about at its very core can still be a good movie, but generally not a very great or remarkable movie. Unbreakable was great and remarkable IMHO. By the end of the film, you just realize you're actually watching a character study of comic book characters, instead of an action-packed movie that gives you thrills one minute but the moment you walk out the door it becomes just one of many comic book movies. Nothing spectacular or special about the latter. In any case, I'm interested in seeing Minority Report, but I don't have any actual hopes or desires for what the movie should be. And any person who gets what movies are about, IMHO, should try to keep from doing the same. Sometimes you'll be pleasantly satisfied if you predict what kind of movie it really is. Other times, it'll just cause you to be hateful of the movie even though it doesn't deserve it.

Speilberg will come through as usual

    by tylersandrew14

I'm real tired of people putting down spielberg's A.I, and putting down Spielberg period. The man is a genious, and has contributed some of the best pieces of cinema, and most inspirational to the public. I am hoping to one day be as great as him(I'm only 14.). After all he got me into movies with Jurassic Park, after that well I kinda knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. You know what, Spielberg continues to inspire. Recently with AI. That film was so filled with compassion, messages, and thoughtfulness... was slightly overwhelming. Maybe A.I wasn't perfect but it was art, genuine, raw emotion ran through the viens of that movie, and thats what makes art. I cried 45 minutes straight through the movie, I coudn't stop the tears, it had this undertone of extreme sadness, but was so filled with love, and totally changed my thoughts about this world and the people that live on it. It filled me with hope. And this comes from a boy who loves action movies, The Matrix, Fight Club, and A Clockwork Orange are just some of my favories. To appreciate a movie like AI you must be a person with SOME intelligence, and not be a some fuckin spielberg hater, jeez man!! He is a GOOD person. He deserves all of his respect. Could you find a better man to be so rich, with all the assholes out there with money its good to know good people have got it to. So stop talkin crap you bunch of idiots.

The look of this trailer confirms my fears. While I'm glad Spielberg is trying new things (and furthermore I've nearly blown my load over the fact that finally, FINALLY he's returned to SF film and really kicked some ass with AI), this just doesn't look like anything other than a better directed version of "Total Recall."
Ridley Scott or the director of "Arlington Road" and "Mothman Prophecies" (Mark Pellington, is that right?) should be given a Philip K. Dick story. SPIELBERG needs "Foundation", "The Caves of Steel", or "Stranger in a Strange Land."

Interesting premise, engrossing atmosophere, and fast action could make this a very, very, very entertaining movie.

Not sure about all this criticism with Speilberg over A.I.

I think Ebert got it exactly correct in his review (three stars): Greatness and miscalculation fight for screen space in Steven Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," a movie both wonderful and maddening. Here is one of the most ambitious films of recent years, filled with wondrous sights and provocative ideas, but it miscalculates in asking us to invest our emotions in a character that is, after all, a machine. [end quote]

Tom Cruise will not come not to "top form" after this; he is already the world's biggest movie star (and under-rated as an actor, I think).

Steven Speilberg is one of the finest director's around (obviously).

    by llghtst0rmer

Straight up. I haven't seen any other film this year with as much imagination, as much scope, or as much cinematic "flavor" than AI. Perhaps LOTR will give it a run for its money (when Peter Travers says it's the best film of the year, it's at LEAST worth a look, I say.) But at this point in time, AI has been the only film this year to really make me sit at the edge of my seat or even feel moved at all. I loved Memento, and I would certainly give it my vote for Best Screenply this year, but as a film on the whole, AI has thus far been unsurpassed. (Again... *my* opinion... it doesn't mean much outside the world of "me.") As for Spielberg, I'd say he seems to have brought the dramatic impact he crafted with Schindler, Empire of the Sun, and Amistad and re-incorporated it into the action and excitement of the big-bang blockbuster movies he made his name on. (If only Jurassic Park and Lost World could've benefited in the same way, huh?) So with all these factors at work, I can't friggin' wait to see Minority Report. If it's half as intriguing as the trailer seems to promise, then Spielberg may be the next name I'll be adding on my list of favorite directors. Does everyone else think I'm nuts now?

It's good to know some young people are still concerned with things like virtues and goodness. I think it's people like him that will keep the world from becoming what we're all afraid it will. (And I'm with you on Jurassic Park, dude. Maybe not the film itself, per se, but what it did for you. Sounds like JP for you was like Star Wars for me; it gave you the desire to create new worlds, am I right?) And he's got a very good point regarding Spielberg and his money. Would you rather see him with that kind of dough, or, say, Puff Daddy instead?

  • Did my fellow talkbackers read Ken Turans article in the L.A.TIMES.He tries to account for his complete lack of understanding of FIGHT CLUB,REQUIEM FOR A DREAM,etc.Roger Ebert ,David Denby and the NY TIMES critics have also done something similar, attacking what they cannot comprehend.I think the heart of the matter is not GenX v/s Boomer, but more Kael v/s Sarris.I think the people in the Kael camp(pun intended/unintended),the so called 'paulettes',are now coming to terms with the inherent fallacy of the way in which they view films.I think that the glib style of reviewing that has come to characterize the landscape of american film criticism has begun to unravel. You must understand that the quality that Ms.Kael' students borrowed from her most, was the hip and/sarcastic style that she brought into vogue.Examples could be A.I,Freddy got Fingered this year, which most film critics in the U.S took apart without even giving the films a fair hearing. All of them were acolytes(if not in body then in spirit)of Ms.Kael.Sometimes i wonder if the critics(if they can be called that)are writing their reviews in order to honour the memory of Ms.Kael, who passed away recently.I hope that i dont come off sounding rude but most critics today are like sheep who flock together to praise/rip apart a particular film. Its this herd mentality of theirs that turns me off most.I think the bane of American film criticism has been a tendency to overvalue the screeenplay at the expense of visual command.Mr.Sarris tried to change that mindset but he ended up being isolated by the bullies of the Kael camp.Is it any wonder that the few critics who stand out amongst the rabble(Jonathan Rosenbaum,Ray Pride,Dave Kehr,Armond White,Jonathan Hoberman)are all hardcore auteurists. This is where the auteur policy's inherent nobilty comes to mind. The people who went with Sarris (their number, right now,may not even reach double digits)took no ideological or other biases with them when they went to a film. They treated each film on its merit and in certain cases tried to give the audience a glimpse of the monumental effort and artistry that certain directors brought to their films.
The so called 'boomer' critics all fall into the 'paulettes' category. They are unable to empathize with the younger generation simply because their way of looking at films is wrong. They managed to fool their masters at prestigious newspapers and the general public for 30 years because nobody can really come up with an argument against such shallow thinking that panders to the mediocre-est common denominator(Hey!If it looks hip and it doesn't make anyone think too much,it works!).One can find it anywhere,Lisa Scwartzbaum,Owen Gleiberman,Peter Travers,Anthony Lane,Todd McCarthy, and the above mentioned worthies as well as most other major newspaper film critics.I was particularly angered by Schwartzbaum and the other 'film scholars' saying that they had never read the LOTR trilogy. In any other profession that would constitute rank unprofessionalism and a valid reason to fire the individual, but here the critic is encouraged to not do any sort of groundwork so that his/her view is similar (panders)to the lowest common denominator.Harry you are not doing true film fans a favour by foisting upon us the views of such pedestrians. All people can do is stop reading such tripe. The auteurists on the other hand have coped pretty well with the changing times because they dont look at whether a film is 'sexy' or 'kitschy',but at the artistic merits of the film. The paulettes give free passes to some of their favourite film-makers(something which they accused the auteurists of doing). If a certain movie promotes smug liberal values then its automatically deemed worthy of a 4**** rating.Jonathan Demme toiled throughout the 80's,making great films, without so much as an encouraging peep from these guys. But the moment he made a cold hearted, manipulative movie like 'The Silence of the Lambs' he was given an oscar(which seems to be an award for the best mediocre film of the year). If Oliver Stone makes a film most reviewers talk about his politics rather than the film. When Martin Scorsese makes flat out classics like Casino,Kundun and Bringing out the Dead all these critics can do is compare them to his lesser works like Taxi Driver or Raging Bull. For them the 70's,the decade in which they wiped the floor with the auteurists, never ended. If Steven Spielberg makes a movie about the Holocaust or about heroic American soldiers in World War 2,his movie is deemed 'an instant classic'.But if he makes a really inventive movie like A.I,Amistad,The Lost World or even The Last Crusade he is chastised. That last movie is the closest anyone has come to making a non racist, adventure movie. Its also the beginning of his best period, regardless of what the critics(paulettes) say.The Walsh-like dimensionality that he was beginning to achieve towards the end of The Temple of Doom and that he was working towards in The Empire of the Sun reaches full bloom in the film.Spielberg's films are given respect, but Spielberg the film maker is never given any respect. He is called mawkish, manipulative, etc when,in truth,he is one of the most humane film makers ever.I predict that the negative reviws that were given to A.I will come back to haunt each reviwer who gave one.Just like Marnie or Vertigo or A Touch of Evil or Rio Bravo it will be honoured and looked upon as a great film 40 years from now.No critic in the Kael camp recognized the satirical value of the Lost World, although they were quick to praise the 'realistic special effects'.These critics now give more importance to the movie budget and the making of the film than they do to the film itself. If i needed that i would watch E!-Entertainment television.Oh!whats that you say?E!'s Todd Newton is now reviwing films!!Good. Now no one can tell the difference between these pseudo-critics and their baser imitators.

    yours sincerely,
    Vinod aka SHIVA

    Uh...

    by cubbie fan

Well, first off, Spielberg's last outing, "A.I.," was a success. I mean, it may not have made a ton of money, but there wasn't a movie like it this year, or in a long time. I heard that Spielberg was directing a movie called, "Minority Report," and Tom Cruise was going to be in it. When I heard what it was about, I wasn't sure what to think. I mean, the plot didn't grab me right away. Then, the teaser comes out. People have said this about "A.I.," but Spielberg has NEVER done anything like this before. Nothing even close. This is a sci-fi film, but with a huge twist. It's a cop movie about the law. The images are very blue, and it looks like a dark thriller rather than a sci-fi film. I mean, it's all about people comitting murder, and being arrested for it. Believe me, Spielberg is doing something COMPLETELY different. "A.I." was weird, but it wasn't something that we kind of haven't kind of seen before. But, I remain optimistic because, well, it's Spielberg. With Cruise as your star, you have a good start right there. I would like to see this movie work, but.......

I would love to be a film director some day, and I respect guys like Spielberg. He has made some great films in his career, and he's popular for a reason. I think that if I, a 16 year old guy and see that he and other directors are genuises (Stone, Scorcese, Kubrick) you all can to. Iron Man

    by dyslexicheart

Steven Spielberg looks to have done a good job with this flick, as long as he doesn't launch another brilliant online game like the A.I. cloudmakers one. Because that game was far more exciting than the movie, which I didn't think was terrible but I was disappointed. I hope someone makes a movie based on the murder of Evan Chan, it could be good. Speaking of movies that should be made, Joss Whedon's IRON MAN would be the most ass-kicking comic book adaptation in the universe. Look what he did in 2001 alone: Wrote and Directed three of the most powerful, original and exciting hours of television ever with "The Body", "The Gift" and "Once More, With Feeling" episodes of BtVS. He also penned some great comics in Fray and Angel.

but Tom Cruise is the fucking man. Recently, at least. While others in his income bracket have become full-fledged embarrassments (Ford, Travolta, Schwarzenegger), this guy's made all the right moves. A lot of it hasn't panned out, quality-wise (Eyes Wide Shut, M:I2), but all his recent choices have been solid. M:I2 raked it in, he got the Oscar nod for Magnolia, The Others was a sleeper hit, and the Nicole/Penelope thing was a good trade. Both this movie and Vanilla Sky look to continue the trend.

    Teaser Trailers

    by reindeerflotilla

I thought it was a pretty good teaser for MINORITY REPORT - but then again, as it's just a teaser, I don't have much in the way of expectations. As they're just a snapshot of what is to come, I'm surprised that there are some people who believe that they can judge exactly what the finished product will be like. Look at PHANTOM MENACE - great trailers, shame about the movie. Or GONE IN 60 SECONDS - terrific trailer, 400% better than the film ! BTW, I also rate AI as the best film of 2001 so far - yes, it was infuriating at points but it still had an strong impact on me.

Tom Cruise was the death of Mission Impossible

    by aggregatescore

That's right, he destroyed its soul. The genius of the original series was that it wasn't Bond or the Saint, it wasn't individualistic it was an absolute team show (a la A-team). Each episode, you saw the mission from four or five different view-points, and all the cast had equal weight (admittedly the black guy always seemed to end up doing the engineering behind-the-scenes roles, but he was given as much time on screen as any of the others). The best bit about the 1996 film was the opening mission with Tom, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Emilio Estefez, Emmanuelle Bearte & Jon Voight. This was clearly intended as a direct transposing of the series's style. Now that film worked because it showed what happened to Cruise as a renegade agent afterwards. HOWEVER YOU CANNOT DO A SEQUEL IF YOU ARE THEN GOING TO MAKE IT THE TOM CRUISE SHOW. MI2 was basically a bond film. Cruise was infinetely more famous than his 'team' (all 3 of them), and so the mission is only ever described from his point of view. In addition he appears virtually invincible, and at no time does he look like he's going to lose. Thandie Newton is a standard Bond girl (and a pretty passive one at that); Anthony Hopkins is the 'M' role; that Australian guy is just the native' contact Bond always gets; and Ving Rhames does Jack Shit. The transformation of what was a fantastic ensemble T.V series into a mere vehicle for Cruise's ego is one of the saddest things I can remember. And the worst is that there's no way back now. Tragic.

First off, what the hell do you know about Puff Daddy? ("Would you rather see him with that kind of dough, or, say, Puff Daddy instead?") I'm curious to kow why you think he is such a bad person and Spielberg is such a good person.

Second, have you seen movies like "Donnie Darko," "Monsters, Inc." "The Man Who Wasn't There," "Amelie," "Sexy Beast," "In the Bedroom," "Mulholland Drive," or "Moulin Rouge?" All impressive movies that were released this year. Put me on the list of "AI" bashers. I thought it was a well-intended flop with more holes in logic than the average popcorn movie. That last 30 minutes was pure torture. I got the message, Steven, you don't need to hit me over the head with it (and I enjoy most of Spielberg's work.)

    The Psychic Menace

    by harry head

This is a Philip K Dick story and most of his stuff was written in the 50's and 60's so ofcourse it is going to have those classic sci fi elements in it.

Total Recall's story revolved around psychics and I don't think that story ever seem dated or corny. If it's going to be a story just about psychics without any imagination or ingenuity yes that could be really lame. Star Wars incorporates mystical powers and science really well, I think this film will do the same, as Total Recall did.

And it's obvious some people just don't like the idea of someone being arrested before they actually commit a crime...but this is a story about the powers of law enforcement in an advanced society; fifty years ago you same people would have balked at using "DNA" evidence against a criminal.

I think good science fiction just portrays a vision of the future and doesnt preach about it; it tries to show a systems faults and strengths, if you actually watch Robocop and Starship Troopers without listening to what Verhoven "really" was saying about the right wing ideas in those films, you will see that the films themselves don't preach, they show you the good and bad about the ideas portrayed in them.

    Spielberg can't do Sci-Fi?

    by private ryan

What the hell? You can't say "Close Encounters" notwithstanding. It was brilliant. What else has he failed at in the sci-fi department? AI? Get off of that movie's back already. It was defiently flawed, but at times brilliant. The last ten minutes were awful and unnecesarry. But the rest of the film was fantastic. What about ET? Jurassic Park is sci fi. The genre he does best is probably science fiction, and he is one of the best directors to ever work in the genre.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I love science fiction. alongside "magnolia," Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" is my favourite movie of all time. making those two my two favourite movies of all time (just didn't want any confusion there). other absolute favourite movies of mine include Alien, Blade Runner, E.T., and Star Wars. they are all incredible motion pictures. and what i consider to be the best in the genre. but on the outskirts of that top five, labelled as runners-up are A.I. and Close Encounters. i mean, I LOVE THOSE MOVIES. but they're just not quite as good as the others i previously mentioned. HOWEVER... in my opinion, A.I. is Steven's greatest achievement as a director, as well as his second best movie. his BEST movie and SECOND BEST achievement as a director would be E.T. that may sound confusing, but it really isn't. his direction of A.I. is, quite simply, inspirational. the scope of the picture, the shots, the direction of the actors... it's all there in TOP FORM. but E.T. has just a little something extra as an overall movie, which elevates it to my top five favourite sci-fi pictures. but A.I. is still VERY close behind. man... practically everytime i come on here to post something short, it turns into this big long deal. i just can't help it. either way, getting back to business... what's my point? just that along with Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, and George Lucas, Steven Spielberg has made one of the GREATEST SCI-FI PICTURES EVER. as well as two VERY CLOSE, VERY BRILLIANT runners-up. and now he's following up A.I. with a kick-ass-looking summer blockbuster sci-fi picture starring none other than Tom Cruise. in short, i'm fucking excited.

I was just saying I'm glad some kids still find goodness worthwhile. You don't think we live in a culture where the only way to be cool is to not give a fuck about anything or anybody? Maybe I've misjudged, but I was under the impression that self-centeredness and indifference to everything not "Me" was the order of the day lately. If Tyler isn't the exception to the rule that I thought he was, then I'd say things are looking up for the future. And thank you for raking me over the coals for complementing someone, dude. Philip K Dick Rocks!!!!!

    by skippy

Phil Dick is truly one of the most imaginative and intelligent authors who ever put pen to paper. He was definitely ahead of his time when he wrote. Minority Report was only a short story of his but involved concepts so dense that I had to read it several times before I truly could wrap my head aorund his ideas. On the surface the film version might appear to quite obvious but let me say that it is much more and when you leave the theatre you will most certainly be thinking about it for some time! by superninja

The atmosphere in the film had me from the first moment. A wonderful realization of film noir and the future. Then I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Phillip K. Dick is one brilliant author. He captures the future so completely that you believe it is a reality. Which is the same feeling I got from watching Blade Runner. However, in terms of a cinematic experience, I prefered the changes made to the Dick story. Ridley Scott's version was more entertaining to me. Anyone else agree?

    by merkin muffley

Those of you looking for plot holes and calling the "future crime" gimmick lame (which it would be if that's what the film was really about) have to realize this is a film about fascism in the name of public safety and security and how out of control things can get when we willingly(?) sacrifice our freedoms to keep the streets safe. Sound familiar? Get over the potentially silly high concept "hook" and you can see that this is dealing with much heavier material than a made for cable b movie. This is probably more Brazil (without the humor) than Blade Runner or Logan's Run. But what the fuck do I know?
