HERC Revisits ROSWELL_1.1!!

Published at:  Dec 03, 2001 11:14:33 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

November sweeps ended almost a week ago, and the energy has been sucked right out of primetime. “Smallville” is a rerun, “24” is pre-empted, “NYPD Blue” still isn’t as fun as “Hill Street” and “Frasier” will never be half as funny as “Cheers”.

May I suggest!

At 9 p.m., UPN is repeating the “Roswell” pilot for the first time ever, and the installment? Far better than we remember! Funny, and dramatic, and bursting with the teen romance, it continues to demonstate how “Roswell” out-Smallvilles “Smallville” and reminds all of the giant talent that is series mastermind Jason Katims. Plus, there are surprises:

* “Alias’” twitchy SD-6 tech guy turns up in tonight’s teaser as an unshaven witness to Max’s resurrection of Liz. (IMDb reveals the same actor played Glory’s memorable henchman Dreg on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” last season.)

* Richard Schiff, who was just starting his first season as “West Wing’s” Toby Ziegler, plays the seemingly obsessed Sheriff Valenti’s rascally government accomplice.

* "Twin Peaks'" own Deputy Hawk, half-Swede Michael Horse, plays Valenti's trusty deputy! And how cool is that?

Unaware at first that it was a repeat, I plugged “Roswell” 1.1 into my VCR and found myself unable to switch it off.

Herc’s rating for “Roswell” 1.1?

****

The Hercules T. Strong Rating System:

  • ***** better than we deserve
  • **** better than most motion pictures
  • *** actually worth your valuable time
  • ** as horrible as most stuff on TV
  • * makes you quietly pray for bulletins

Whose phaser was set to “stupid”? Whose brain should report to sick bay?

I am – Hercules!!

    Roswell

    by dyslexicheart

I remember enjoying the pilot very much when it first aired. I then did not get a chance to see the show very much until summer reruns but also liked the rest of season one. By season two, I was taping it and still liking it. This year has been as good as ever and it's great that it comes on right after BtVS. I hope Roswell makes it through this season and beyond. If it doesn't then Jason Katmis should get another chance.

    Not a bad first episode....

    by computerguy68

Not 4 stars mind you, of course, as long as the show is not Angel any show can score 4+ with the Herc-O-Meter. >>>>>> Only started with season 2 in repeats this summer 'cause you folks just kept raving about it. Is it just me or does each season seem different? The one big thing I noticed in 1.1 is Jason's acting. He wasn't as stiff and wooden as he is in season 2. I thought you were to get better in time, but he got worse. He is better this season, how was he in the rest of season 1?>>>>>>With the ratings this season, I guess this will be the last season. So Kripto-monster of the week won, and Angel is getting good numbers. The brass at the WB is probably feeling very smug right now. Well UPN IS doing better than last season, but Buffy only has a season and a half left, Roswell is on its last legs, and Enterprise is slipping. They are going to be in trouble in the next few years. >>>>>>In an unrelated topic since Herc didn't mention it, this weeks X-Files was great, too bad I already saw it on Millennium a few years ago. Which got me to thinking, that storyline was not solved with Frank Black. Why not continue it with him on X-Files? They can bring him back as a guest in a mini arc story, get the woman back as well, (she only has a small part on Smallville as Lana's Aunt). This continuing story could be the new mythos for the X-Files crew for the last two seasons. BTW did you catch the phrase about the snake eating itself? Frank Black may return yet!!!

    Katherine Heigl

    by fire_mage

At least you'll get to see Katherine Heigl at her finest! With the newer episodes she seems to have lost her curvaceousness, (note to self, remember to post a pack of Tim-Tams a week to her!)
On the arc thing, yes each series has a focus and it only gets better. It's worth watching if you haven't seen it and watch all of series 1 if you can, really does set the scene. I liked series 2 as everything moved along in a great progression. Can't comment on 3 as I haven't been able to get really involved with it yet. What do others think of Series 3? Am I right to be ambivalent? I've only watched up to the one where Max goes to LA or wherever and I wasn't hugely impressed. They were ok but nothing fantastic. I have a stack to watch over the coming weekend though, so maybe it will draw me in. Any thoughts?

    Frakes...

    by computerguy68

was in the show I saw today, so I would assume that UPN will show the same one on Tuesday.>>>>>>fire_mage, I have thought that this season has been weak. Again I came into this show in this summer on SPACE and saw the whole season in about a month. I really got into the show and was chomping at the bit to get to season 3. However this season hss not been the same for me. It's moving too slow in some parts and too fast in others, (why rush this wedding thing?). Why make the season (2) end with the quest to get Max's son back, only to drop it so quickly in season 3. This show needs to get on track before it gets buried further in the ratings.

    Hooked!

    by skippy

I am so far out of the demographic that Roswell is aimed at, but I have been hooked on it from the first episode. It is definitely a guilty pleasure for myself, yet I cannot look away! (of course the fact that the female part of the cast are pretty hot might play into it!)

Yeah, Season 3 has been a little scattershot...

    by ensign throwaway

But the plot with Max's Dad is really beginning to pull everything together. The last show was probably the best episode of the season (thus far). Oh, and major thanks to UPN for repeating the any of the older shows. I can't wait to see the pilot again--the scene where Max does his mind whammy and Liz sees herself through his eyes just gets to me everytime I see it. >sniff<

    The Pilot

    by gooniegirl

I could watch this episode over and over and over again. Oh wait. I do. Next week's rerun - The End of The World rivals Cry Your Name as the biggest tearjerker. I'm babbling...

Anyway, I just had to throw in my two pennies to the person who said Max's dad was tying things together this season. I think you're absolutely right. In the first season the humans and the pod squad kind of banded together in their fear of Valenti finding out the truth. This season they haven't had any reason to "band" together. Everyone is on their own separate thing and the show works better as an ensemble. Not that we've really seen an ensemble this season, but maybe the powers that be will get some kind of clue. We really need a "bad guy" - Valenti, Hubble, Pierce, the Skins, Tess - and Mr Evans bringing it closest to home - I just think it will really work - if it's given a chance.

    Okay rant over...

    Roswell Ancestry!

    by seth maxim

I'm so glad there showing the first ever Roswell. This episode is the one that got me hooked on the show and made me start taping every episode! I hope that from the reairing of this episode will come a renewed interest in the show for old watchers and new ones, as well as I hope that the producers realize what's missing and find a way to bring us back to the feeling of the first season, not same stories told in new format, but that feeling of Roswell. I don't know how to describe it, but the fans and Jason Katims know what I'm talking about. I still love this show, and I'm not using the word love lightly. It's still a great show, does need a common enemy which is the Evan's father right now which is mind blowing that he would ever be the enemy of sorts, but a life threating enemy is needed, and something else is missing but I don't exactly know what or it just might be suspense, wait that's what it is, suspense. I remember the old episodes use to make me not be able to wait for next weeks episode. But I have faith in Jason Katim's abilities as well who can doubt Riker's( Jonathon Frakes) abilities and faith in this show. Roswell is still one of the few best shows left on television. Long Live ROSWELL!

    Watch tonight and get HOOKED!

    by man-thing

This episode, the first episode is the one to watch and see why this show makes Smallville pale in comparison! It would be a great shame to have Roswell succumb to the ratings that it has been posting this season. A shame that there are alot of people out there who have never seen it, or given it a chance. Years from now when people start getting hooked watching it in syndication and on video and DVD (Attention studio: get those collections on the store shelves!) they'll be so upset they weren't around now it see it unfold. But wait, it's not The End Of The World! Watch the first Roswell tonight and see what the buzz is about, and with a renewed interest and new viewers, we'll be able to see the Roswell saga around for a good while to come.

    The reason we believe

    by parnellbc

This is the pilot that started it all. Hopefully there are many who just saw this or taped it to watch later. This is why so many are so passionate about this show. This pilot makes Smallvilles look trite by comparison. The good news is that season three has given us back the relationships we loved in season one. The Nov sweeps establishing of Mr.Evans search for the truth about his kids as Sheriff Valenti did in season one. The passion of the father, the ever conflicted teens, the confused bystanders this is good drama. I'm ever hopefull that the 'Bilblical Neilsons' will show that many gave tonight a chance. That they will next week as well when UPN shows a popular season two episode. Should these two show promise vs Dullsvilles reruns a pickup for the back 9 episodes should occur. The stories for the remainder of the year should be intringing based on what Jason Katims has hinted.

    Hey ComputerGuy68!

    by naia

First an unrelated - Why does Buffy only have a season and a half left? I hoped it'd be on longer than that, like Frasier seems to go on forever, though I've never really watched that so. >>>>>>>>>> Now then, Roswell. I remember this ep well. I only saw half of it the first time and I've been mad about it ever since. Now I've seen all of it, and it was excellent. I never saw the part at the beginning in the Crashdown, and I didn't see the end either. Finally! I liked (I think it was season 1) better than two or three so far, cuz once they killed the relationships I lost interest. Anyone else? And does anyone know whether Maria will go to NY later?

    Reply to Talkback

  • Remember they introduced Tess in year 2 , and some posted in the past she was the girlfriend of one of the writers or producers. Her addition really hurt the show, and to justify her character, and the character's exit, they may have fatally wounded the series. Now in year 3, the actors are recieving outside offers. 5 have been in outside projects, 3 in HIGH profile projects: "Traffic", "Band of Brothers", and "We Were Soldiers". Call it the "Clooney/Dushku Syndrome." Imagine "ER" and "Angel" with those 2 actors and their characters still around. It is an unfortunate reality of the entertainment industry in the U.S. You can do film or T.V., but if it ain't HBO, you can't do both. And these actors want to do films as well.----later----m

Heart Attack and response to Naia

    by seth maxim

I've seen this episode, again now. My conclusion is that it took my breath away again( the way I say that sounds too gay, I'm not though, no really!). Since it aired tonight I have watched it twice more. By the way to talkbacker Naia, keep in mind that this show is all about heart and what it means to be human even if your not, so most likely she won't go,realizing she loves Micheal more than her music, or she'll go to NY and realize what she truly gave up was not Micheal for music, but true love for love of a hobby, music, then she'll rush to the airport to go back to Micheal in Roswell, but as she heads to the front doors of the airport out comes Micheal(showing fate is involved, then cue emotional music written by Majandra) they pause then Maria rushes into Micheal's arms and starts crying and say's I love you so much then an areial camera moves upward and away from them as background music intensifies as Micheal in turn say's I love you, the end. Well that's how I see it anyway. Knowing Jason Katim's he probably has a reason for reairing these episodes that tie in to this season, genius. Long Live ROSWELL.

    Naia - Re: Buffy

    by computerguy68

UPN only has a two year contract on the show, and I remember reading somewhere that SMG is tired of the show. Think about it, Joss is hardly involved anymore, Anthony S. Head (Giles) has left, some of the stars are now doing movies. The writing is on the wall. Check out this article on msn.com "When good shows go bad" She has some good points http://entertainment.msn.com/tv/features/120101_wanda.asp

  • Thanks ComputerGuy. The article was helpful. She *does* have some points. I didn't know UPN only has a two year contract. ---Could they get another year, do you suppose?--- At least Hush is on next Tuesday. I've never seen it though every review is rave. The subject line is from a Young Dubliners song, btw. They're around on Morpheus. Do you know if there's gonna be a new ep in december? Thanks again for the response and article. Roswells Future and more info for Naia

    by computerguy68

The next few weeks will decide if the show will get a full 22 for the season. Regardless, UPN will probably kill this and SU2 next season. These two shows are not keeping the viewers after Buffy and Enterprise.>>>>>Naia no info on when the next new eps will be on, new Angel called "Dad" next week. Some stories coming up: Ep 11 "Gone" more of the Nerds of Doom, Ep 12 "Doublemeat Palace" Buffy gets a job at a fast food joint, where beef ain't the only thing on the menu.

    Ep: 11. Writer: David Fury.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Buffy is accidentally turned invisible by the supervillains and a new toy of theirs.

Okay so- What does Buffy do to Spike when she's invisible?!?!? (((grins and jumps up and down in anticip...ation))) Do you know? "discovers Spike post-Invisible Buffy events" What events?! >>> I love Xander and Anya bicker time. ( I'm writing this message as I'm looking at your post. Don't think of it as disorganized, think of it as non-linear. :) )
Who's the hero of the episode? Wait, don't tell me. No yeah, do. >>> Lemme guess, Willow joins the dark side. >>> Good for Spike. I'm a big believer in B/S. Anya doesn't revert to demon does she? Not yet right? I'm going on some earlier talkback spoilers that said that'd happen but later. They were posted by Thenser1 (?) I think. Have your heard them? I could find them here wait . . . yeah, it's under "Herc reviews the final Buffy of sweeps!!" towards the bottom. Subject ***Major Spoilers*** there follows a discussion of his (?) reliability where Thenser1 comes out on top. So. Plus they sound really funny. >>>
Thanks again for all the spoilers. If you could email me when you get a chance I would be eternally indebted to you.
