That wondrous trailer for MONSTERS INC

Published at:  Nov 27, 2001 7:44:41 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with a trailer for MONSTERS INC... Now usually trailers for movies already in release... just not all that interesting, but the folks over at PIXAR.... well they just, they know how to tickle all the right spots and bring a good deal of joy. This new trailer plays less like a trailer and more like a theatrical cartoon... albeit a too short one, but it is closer to that than an average run of the mill trailer.... And it also shows that Pixar spirit of never throwing in the towel no matter what is in release opposite them. Of MONSTERS INC and HARRY POTTER, I'd choose to watch over and over again.... MONSTERS INC... I'm just wired for Pixar. Those guys have my number.

They so understand animation. Here, having these characters play charades... the very nature of charades is to tell a story visually, without words... What they do with it here... if you haven't seen it... Well it is a delight you shouldn't miss...

Whoa! what an excellent idea... to promote Monsters Inc. with Harry Potter. A pure stroke of genious... I love those guys at Pixar, they're like big kids. Love that Star Wars refrence.

    "The Sound Of Music!"

    by elliott ness

That trailer was hilarious! Those guys at Pixar did it again. Too bad Europe has to wait for this movie until the end of February, by that time I will already have pre-ordered my special edition DVD. Perhaps Disney is too chicken to really compete with Harry?

    I thought

    by cincy vigilante

that Monsters Inc was just okay. I did not think that there were two levels of humor, one for adults and one for children. I think Toy Story and Shreck both did this. However my eleven year old loved it and thats what matters.

Is ROB BOTTIN really directing FRANK DARABONT'S script for S

    by the tall man

I've got a pal who works at CASTLEROCK and he said that Rob "THE THING" Bottin was seen in an office discussing directing Frank Darabont's script of Stephen King's THE MIST. The reason he was assuming it was this discussion is because they were looking at the monster designs that were drawn up ages ago for that potentially great flick. This actually sounded plausible to me since Darabont has moved on to "loftier" projects and is gearing up to act as Producer on a couple of projects including DOC SAVAGE. Also, Bottin had long ago left the FREDDY VS. JASON project so his directorial debut is still up in the air...now THIS would be an awesome project for him to first sit in the chair. Rob Bottin directing and assumedly overseeing the FX of THE MIST?! KILLER! Can anyone please confirm or deny this beautiful, beautiful rumour!

Thanks in advance! The Tall Man

Rolling on the floor laughing my silly ass off!!!!

    by wardog

This is fucking hilarious! And it's nice to see Pixar giving a tongue-in-cheek nod to the latest 600-pound gorilla on the block even when promoting themselves. I really must get a DVD player now because when I finally buy Monsters, Inc. I will play it every single evening just to lift my spirits--tapes just don't last at that rate. This movie is funnier than Toy Story 1 & 2. I just hope they can always stiff-arm the House of Mouse during the creative process for future projects at Pixar. Disney always seems to turn gold ideas to manure these days. Has anyone seen that idiotic trailer for Snow Dogs yet? CGI-enhanced-in-acting huskies. Give me a fucking break.

looks like another computer generated hit. A lot of slap stick Warner Bros. type skits. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up with Monsters Inc.

Now that's the way to do the trailer

    by silvio dante

No mr.Voice, no overexposure plotwise but AN IDEA. Sure, the film is already out and there has been a trailer and a teaser out before tgis, but it's global market and Monsters, Inc, has not opened in most of the places on this planet of ours. Pixar has not yet let me down - TS2 was an instant classic(sic!) and it's not just "you know, for the kids"!

    Fantastic idea

    by juggernaut125

I love this trailer. It blows me away because the guys at Pixar pretty much said, "Hey. Let's make a trailer for the movie with a scene that's NOT EVEN IN THE MOVIE!!" That's a lot of freakin' work to promote a flick that's already out. And yet it's such seamlessly great fun, you almost forget that these two characters aren't real actors. Pixar, you rock. (Plus, it was funny too.)

Trailer is cute and funnier than the movie

    by the_pissboy1

Why couldn't the film be this creative? Monsters, Inc. is to Pixar what Hercules is to Disney animation. It's a subpar, mediocre, flat, featureless waste of film. Can the animation, save for Sulley's fur, be any more banal....the backgrounds look like they're stolen from Scooby Doo cells. And there's maybe three laughs in the whole film. Sad, sad, sad that the people who made one of the greatest animated films ever, Toy Story 2, can generate such bilge.

    talk with John Lassetter (sp?)

    by edward_bozzard

Yeah, i went to a BFI thing in London last week, where Johnathon Ross interviewed JL, and one of the audience questions was concerning this trailer.. Apparently, there is rather a funyn story attached to it, in as much as Warner's got word of this trailer, and were all set to get the lawyers on to Disney, and greta a big fuss.. The guy in charge of the project at Disney said chill guys, watch the trailer and then comment...Apparently they were so impressed that they ordered the trailer to be placed with all copies of Harry Potter. He said the guys at Warner were on the floor laughing

This is just a lame copy

    by custer27

Have you ever heard about the student animation short movie called CHARADE? Jon Minnis was a student at Sheridan College and he won the Oscar in 1984. That trailer is just a lame copy of his work. Do your homeworks Harry.

    Charades

    by flipthefrog

Absolutely right. The Trailer is a complete gag-for-gag ripoff of a cell animated film from about 15 years ago entitled "Charades."

It's actually funnier than the MONSTERS version.

Pixar should be ASHAMED of themselves for this sort of plagiarizing.

    Unoriginal concept, funny execution.

    by magnolia-fan

I've seen this basic concept done many times. Scene: A game of charades. Plot: Character A cannot guess what title/person/thing/action Character B is trying to express, no matter how obvious Character B makes the clues. Then, when the roles are reversed, Character B guesses instantly. It's not an original concept. I doubt this trailer was a rip-off of any particular film. There are only a very limited number of possible comic outcomes for a game of charades. The execution is what's important, and it's pretty funny, especially how Sully is able to materialize the broomstick, owl, glasses and thunderbolt out of thin air. ___________________ Something bothered me about the tagline "Now showing at a theatre near you. Really near you. Like, maybe, right next door.", but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until now. Then it hit me. Pixar (jokingly) wants you to leave the theatre showing HARRY POTTER to walk over to the theatre in the multiplex showing MONSTERS, INC. My problem with this is that in most multiplexes these days (my favourite multiplex, Montreal's Paramount being an exception), you get your ticket ripped at the entrance to the multiplex, not the individual theatres. So, even if you do skip out of HARRY POTTER to see MONSTERS, INC. instead, you've already paid for the HARRY POTTER ticket, so Warner Brothers, not Pixar/Disney, would still get your money. But they are just kidding, so it's probably best that I don't overanalyze this too muc.

    Unable to save file...

    by magnolia-fan

When I downloaded the two ROYAL TENENBAUMS trailers (another Disney/Touchstone film, so the official ROYAL TENENBAUMS website gives you the same rigmarole to view QuickTime trailers as the official MONSTERS, INC site; you click on "View New Trailer" and another Window opens up, asking you what resolution QT file you'd like to see), I was able to save the files pernamently just by entering "Temporary Internet Files" with ACDSee (it's easier to browse "Temporary Internet Files" using ACDSee than it is with Windows Explorer), sorting files by size, and moving the trailers (always the largest files) to another folder. However, when I try to look for the MONSTERS, INC trailer, I can't find any files larger than about 100Kb in any of the subfolders in "Temporary Internet Files", even though I have not closed the window with the trailer on it (so it must be somewhere on the hard drive). Nothing resembling a QuickTIme file comes up if I use Search to search for all files larger than 1000Kb modified in the last 24 hours. And the way the Web site is set up, I can't right click and save the file from the link to the file. Did Disney add something to the file to prevent it from being saved after you view it?

This trailer got HUGE pop when I saw it before Harry Potter!

    by tall_boy

the audience just freaked. I really got a charge out of it (even though I was slightly ticked that the Ep.II trailer wasn't infront of this. this trailer and the LOTR one I had seen for the first time made up for it)

    Oh, bugger.

    by tbrosz

When I saw "Harry Potter," it had neither the "Star Wars" trailer OR this "Monsters Inc." trailer. Nuts!! BTW I had no problems downloading and saving right off the QT display...apparently some studios aren't being hardasses about us downloading their stuff onto disk anymore.
