Hi, Harry
Happy Thanks Giving!
I just got some new photos from the locations of Zhang
Yimou's martial art epic HERO.
Leung Chiu-wai and Maggie Cheung, worked together in
Wong Kar-wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, plays two
assassins, Broken Sword and Flying Now. Along with
another warrior (Zhang Ziyi or Bai Shiqian ?), they
were on a doomed mission of killing the king of Qin
(Chin), later The First Emperor of China, who was
campaigning against six other nations in an attempt to
unify China. This scene was shot near Dunhuang city of
Gansu Province, where the Silk Road passing through.
Jet Li plays Silencer (or No Name ?), the king's most
loyalist warrior. Desperately to eliminate every
single threat for the king, he was after Broken Snow.
Shot in Jiuzhaigou National Park in the east end of
Tibetan Plateau, of Sichuan Province,

"Silencer (or No Name ?), the king's most loyalist warrior. Desperately to eliminate every single threat for the king." Wasn't that the role of the "Shogun Assassin" (or Lone Wolf, either or,) before the ruler went nuts and decided he wanted him dead?

This film WILL BE the next Crouching Tiger, guaranteed! If HERO
by kampbell-kid
After seeing Zhang Ziyi in "The Road Home". I fell in love with the actress Zhang Ziyi even more so than after I did in CTHD. I've been following this film for awhile and the films cast just gets better and better all the time. Now Donnie Yen just jumped on board as the villan and hasn't fought Jet Li on screen since Once Upon A Time In China 2!! Woohoo!! I'm blowing loads of joy for the trailer of this film to come out. Episode what? Attack of the who?! :)

I apologize for that previous post. My tourettes got the best of me...

LCW and MC are two of the most bankable stars in HK cinema, hopefully, they will get a career boost in this movie. JL has not been "himself" since he came to hollywood and it shows, all his releases have SUCKED big time. and that chick ZZY,she was good in "the road home" as well as CTHD. but her RH2 cameo sucked as well as her role in the HK movie "the legend of ZU"..all these stars need the vision of foreign, especially asian (face it, they know angles and shots better than most directors in hollywood, and they don't mind experimenting, check out TH's latest movies...), direction to get the most out of them, the directors in asia runs EVERYTHING and there are no middle man messing with them like they do in the US. Too many cooks spoils the soup, that's the problem in US. that's why they put out mostly bland products that appeal to the biggest masses for maximum profit, nothing wrong with that, but then, movies cease to be an art form, it becomes a commodity, the value's just not there anymore. i think that's why we all flock to sites like this one and vent our fustrations at the movies being discussed here. yeah, geeks are in all of us, and yeah, we understand how the world works, but at the same time, we aspired for the movies to be more than commodities. hopefully this movie as well as all the ones that we all care about will come out not just entertaining, but a true work of art that 10 years from now, we can watch the movie again and still be enchanted. can anyone actually say that about most movies that comes out? Pearl harbor anyone? or Lara Croft? or Mummy 3? they were all just events and will soon be wiped from our memories just like WWW and those damn meteor and volcano movies...

im obviously the best

Long time reader of AICN, but this is the first time I've talked back. I had to get in something regarding Hero. I've been following the development of this film for a while. Every time I look at the list of the cast and crew, I drool like dog. I love Tony Leung Chui-Wai and Maggie Cheung, and their chemistry in "In the Mood for Love" was incredible. I am glad Jet Li is finally making an Asian film again and hopefully he'll stay away from all of these Hollywood bullshit movies for a while. As for the crew, it's like a who's who of Asian cinema today. Zhang Yimou is probably the best living Chinese director. His work is always visually grand and he knows how to tell a good story. I've watched some of his less recognized films like "Not One Less" and came out very satisfied with what some might say is a very bland looking film. Anyway, the rest of the crew is very impressive. Chris Doyle is probably one of the most stylish and innovative cinematographers working today, yet I hope his camera stays still for this film unlike his work for Wong Kar Wai. Emi Wada the Academy Award winning costume designer for Kurosawa's "Ran" works here in recreating ancient Chinese wardrobes and battle armor. The art director (can't remember his name) is the same person who worked on Chen Kaige's "Emperor and the Assassin," a film that I totally fell in love with because of the breathtaking sets and costumes. As a matter of fact the story parrallels Hero, they're about the same subject; the failed assassination attempt on the first emperor of China. Hopefully, Zhang will make a better film than Chen Kaige, a film that will take martial arts films to the next level, that of the grand epic in the traditions of Kurosawa, Lean or de Mille. This will be the true successor to Crouching Tiger.

Yeah, it is mostly incomprehensible, but the cast list is mouth-watering and Chris Doyle's cinematography (not to mention Sammo Hung's fight choreography) make this an absolutely immersive, lose-yourself-in-it's-mystery masterpiece.
-
I liked the film, but it is very incomprehesible. You would have to watch it many times to get it. But as always, I watch WKW films for the atmosphere, mood and interesting visuals. Tony Leung's blind swordsman is one of the best characters ever and the most interesting story going in AOT; he should get a film of his own. I hope his character in Hero is similar, they do actually have the same look.

but doesn't this look a bit TOO Hidden-Draqonesque? Desert location, running on the water, Ziyi...I thought I was looking at production stills from CTHD. Still, when it hits the multiplex (Yeah right - I mean the shadiest possible arthouse grindhouse in town), I'm there!

Shalom.

He made more good films than anyone else in that decade, and he will continue to do so. I don't care if this film is too Crouching-Tiger-esque, if it is made my Zhang, it must be good. "To Live" was the one film other than "Breaking the Waves" that elicited an emotional response from me after I hit 16.

Hooray

You say that asshole, then you don't give any reason why? Come on! Just once! I would loved for one of you loser fanboys to say something with a little bit of constructivism. Come on now! It's not that hard!

Well, if she's in it, I have to see it. Hell, I suffered through Rush Hour 2 just for her! By the way, she could read the damn phone book for 2 hours and I'd pay 9.50.

Okay, I'll bite. Here goes. 1. It's boring. I fell asleep it was so dull, unemotional, lacklustre and ho-hum. 2. The wire-work was very average. You could see them wobble, fer chrissakes. 3. The kung fu was very so so, except for the dojo scene (don't give me grief about Japanese words, I'll call it a kwoon if you like) which was actually very good. The bar fight was a bit ripped off from "Warriors Two". 4. Ang Lee managed to make a beautiful actress look old, tired and ill. Don't give me any "visual poetry" crap either. 5. Chow Yun-Fat? Since when has he been a martial arts star? Give him a gun and he's a grade A a$$kicker.
6. All the idiot reviewers who saw this film and suddenly decided they were experts on Asian cinema, and had seen enough kung fu movies to even suggest it was the best ever made. -
It's quite pretty. You can take your girlfriend to a martial arts movie. It actually conveys the spirit of wuxia fiction to the screen (ever read any? then try it some time). The dojo/kwoon/ninja high school scene is actually very good. Dark Cloud. The ambiguous ending which lets you take away the story you want to carry with you. It has paved the way for more Hong Kong Asian cinema to be accepted by the mainstream. It's teaching lots of people (not just Americans) to read subtitles.
