Jodie Foster up for a cameo in RED DRAGON'

Published at:  Nov 21, 2001 9:01:29 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... This should be treated completely as a RUMOR... A RUMOR! This is not yet confirmed, but given that she has Ted Tally back as the screenwriter, and that this film isn't as bloody and dark for her character, she might very well set out to play the young Ms Starling. True or False? Time will tell...

I have some news I know you are going to be interested in.

A close, reliable source tells me that little Ms Jodie Foster might be doing a cameo for Ratner's "Red Dragon". Expect an announcement shortly on whether or not she says yay or nay.
Nothing more than a hi and bye in a corridor - but Foster is open to the idea; and loves the script.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is also really interested in playing the part of the photo journalist; previously played by Stephen Lang in Manhunter.
I can tell you the opening to the movie is sensational, this is the busy end of Hopkin's possy - he will only be with the studio for 2 weeks work.

Call me "Dialling DeLaurentis"

    Shenanigans! I call shenanigans!

    by darth gravy

Not only do I detect a disturbance in the bullshit-o-meter, if my memory serves correct, Starling wasn't in either Manhunter or Red Dragon. And, considering that RD takes place a while before SOTL, what's the cameo? She's in a tour group passing through Quantico? "One of these days, I'm going to be an Eff Bee Eye agent and stop serial killers," says Clarice, the braces-wearing, pimple-specked young girl? Please.

    I just want to say...

    by jackburton

Too many gimmicks and stunt casting won't save this film...A great director *might* be able to (sadly it only has a decent, by the numbers one in Ratner though), a top drawer script would be a definite plus (Can Tally really manage to avoid cliches and gimmicks long enough and overcome the ardent familiarity of the subject matter to deliver a real knock out story?), but at the end of the day even with the likes of Norton, Keitel, Hopkins et al and all of the above I just don't have much of a good feeling about this one. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong and it will rock against the odds, and if not there'll always be (the still superior in my eyes) Manhunter to fall back on.

    dumb

    by shad0wfax

But won't Clarice be only *just* in the FBI Academy? Sure, Crawford noticed her but only prior to Silence of the Lambs, not a good few years before, which is when Red Dragon was set.
I think it's another dumb move, just like remaking a good movie with this (probably) modern follow-up, just like getting a severely aged and (even more) portly Lecter back to play a YOUNGER Lecter.
    Dumb dumb dumb.

    by paul allen voiq

What the hell is this crap these days with old actors playing their younger selves. 10 years gos by with no intresrt in The movies now when everyone is all old and shit not only do they want to make new movies with tired rehashes of what are now nothing more clasic sterio-types, they are all" playing their younger selves" Sorry but I not gonna by it. Did not buy it with HIGHLANDER 4 (CRAP) Just get new actors for christ sakes. Oh and James Earl Jones is gonna sound real scary when hes 80 years old doing the YOUNG AND POWERFUL Darth Vader. Becauses some other hack waited 20 years to get over his writers block.

  • how the hell will they pull of Hopkins? Now this? Whats up? Who will play the RED DRAGON??? THE ACTUAL LEAD MONSTER THAT IS ONCE AGAIN PUSHED TO THE BACK? Poor Francis he ain't as sexy as Hopkins.

  • But noooooo. In typical Hollywood "treat the audience like complete fucking 'Deliverance' hillbilly morons" style, Dino's house of let-me-snort-coke-off-your-tits filmmaking is trying to capitalize once more on the success of a movie that was overrated to begin with and turn it into a franchise for a new "horror" hero. They're trying to turn Lecter into the new Jason or Freddy. What's next? Friday the Red Dragon? A Nightmare on Lambs Street? Why not just have John Carpenter direct it? His track record's been REAL great lately. God, I fucking hate Hollywood.

    foster as director

    by cityofnight

i wonder how she'd fare as director of RedD... i agree, she is unforgiveable for disrupting the time/space continuum that is Hannibal's universe. I hate Kristi Alley for the same reason. Ungrateful whores! But Foster has talent... no denying that... she shouldn't have a cameo b/c that's hype for the sake of hype, not character for the sake of story. Ratner is the wrong man for this. He should quickly go do RushH3 b/c there isn't enough Jackie... This time, they go to Africa so they can visit Tucker's Roots.

    Worst Rumor Ever

    by testgiver

right. It would be so worth it to try and make her look younger than she did in SOTL (makeup, cgi?) for a cameo. Plus her and the producer are having a tiff. Plus, her character would have nothing to do with the story.. Starling would be in college somewhere at the time, right? Jodi looks good, but not college age.

    by no. 41

All the great scripts and cameos and actors in the world can't change the fact that this is purely a for-profit exercise...as soulless a corporate product as a can of Coke. Just ask yourself this: where would this project be if "Hannibal" had been a flop? You got THAT right, binky...NOwhere, that's where.

    The NYPost outed Jodie today

    by kittykitty

big coincidence this gets posted the same day Page 6 outs Jodie as a lesbian. If it's true it's 1) because she needs the money badly and 2) to detract attention from the outing story

this whole film sounded wonky to me but I have to say with Hoffman and Keitel, Watson, Norton not to mention Hopkins, I'll be there. How are they going to de-age Hopkins? CGI? Then they'll probably do the same for Jodie though I agree if there is a Clarice it should be Julianne, Jodie let the side down by passing on Hannibal.

And if anyone belives this RUMOUR (as it is has been pointed out at the top) GET A LIFE! C'mon, where on earth would Clarice Starling fit into this? by shad0wfax

I've said this before, but I'll say it again.
One thing I wish the Hollywood assholes had done - rather than this shoddy remake with a patchwork of unsuitable actors, and even making less of the original story than Manhunter (which was excellently doctored from book to film, the literary ending sucked major ass) - I wish they had did a prequel to EVERYTHING. What about Edward Norton and Harvey Keitel as the younger Will Graham and Jack Crawford as they investigate the Lecter murders? How about flashbacks then from Lecter's past, of Mischa, or Russia, of his changing personality? How about the dinner party where he serves people human entrees? How about Graham going over the edge in his hunt to find Lecter? I wish, only wish though, that they HAD done this, rather than Red Dragon.

    Page Six

    by kittykitty

The Marisa Hargitay item (I guess that means she's Jodie's "date") is in today's Page Six. Yesterday's listed Jodie as one of Hollywood's power lesbians who used a turkey baster to get pregnant. They didn't beat around the bush (sorry) either and said it right out so they aren't scared of being sued. Er, Happy Thanksgiving, er, yuck. Turkey day. Well well well.

I don't think that Jodie being "officially" outed will change much really because I think people have known for years anyway.

    in Foster defense

    by 4starsonlyplease

You can put down Jodie Foster all you want, but she made the right move not taking on Hannibal. Why take a great role and belittle it. Regardless of opinion, she made Clarice believable in SOTL. Unrelentless, yet vunerable. She conveyed fear well. I don't give a shit what anybody says, but Hannibal lacks the elements of fear the SOTL gave us. Clarice became too rough around the edges for me. Moore could have probably pulled the part off if the story was better fleshed out. Hannibal was just a slasher film with character that we've come to endear/fear. I enjoy the idea of Hannibal being a love interest. That was the element that saved the film from being a complete turd, besides Gary Oldman. I saw SOTL on it's opening day. The reactions of people in the theatre was a treat in itself. I've never seen such a nervous, anxious crowd. People were freaking out. I remember coming out theatre at the local mall and going to a Penn Station for dinner. Just seeing the red meat hit the grill was all of a sudden unappealing. My friends had the same reaction. This was a movie that affected us. Hannibal on the other hand, made people laugh everytime Hopkins said okey-dookey before he slaughtered them. Some cheered every murder. The tone was completely different. I give actors/actress credit when they pass on lesser projects. I for one hope they lay these characters to rest.

    by mascan

If they can cast Hopkins in a role he's about 15 years too old to play, why can't they do the same thing with Foster? This movie is shaping up to be nothing but a multi-million dollar, two-hour-plus publicity stunt to promote itself. Once you've seen the trailer, just go and rent MANHUNTER, and imagine the new cast in those roles, and then tell me if it will really be a better movie this time around. What a waste of time, money and talent.

    who and what the hell?

    by mr_muffin_man

Brian Cox was the original Hannibal in Manhunter. Anyway, though I still have yet to see it, he's the lead in L.I.E. I hear it's damn good. I also hear he's VERY creepy in it. No doubt probably a little cheesed that the role that he originally played will be remembered as played to perfection by Sir Hopkins. Yeah, I guess I would be too. Of course, I doubt he'll be up for any awards for L.I.E. like Sir Hopkins. In a perfect world, he would be. Oh well.

BTW, who the fuck is Ratner and why haven't I heard of... Ratner? Doesn't matter, still no Micheal Mann.
