You've Heard about CGI Bruce Lee in his new movie DRAGON LORD, now see tests!
Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know, my reaction to hearing, "They're making a new Bruce Lee movie with CGI Bruce Lee called DRAGON LORD," was: COOL! I know I'm supposed to be horrified and angry and repulsed.... But here's the deal... Before STAR WARS for me, was BRUCE LEE. There were 4 major geeky cool things I was into before being brainwashed by Milius, Lucas, Spielberg, Miller, Carpenter, Donner and the rest of that bunch... My first love was GORGO. My next love was THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Then there was BRUCE LEE and the song "DIG DIG" from Snow White. I remember the day in my life that I found out Bruce Lee was dead. I was at the Austin Fantasy FilmFest selling 8x10 stills of Star Trek, Harryhausen monsters, Logan's Run, Dr Who, Bruce Lee... and someone was buying the Bruce Lee still and I told him, "I can't wait to meet Bruce Lee, he's my hero!" and this cold heartless bastard told this 4 year old Bruce Lee geek.... "BRUCE LEE IS DEAD!" I actually began crying. I didn't know that movie people could die.
Well, the 'Lee Estate' has decided to move forward with Bruce's post-life career. His wife and daughter are going to bring Bruce Lee back to life on screen.
Now, maybe it is because I've already seen Bruce Lee in a new movie this year once already. In SHAOLIN SOCCER, the goalie for the Shaolin team.... DEAR GOD! It is Bruce Lee. It is just about the most scary likeness I've ever seen in a film. And the scenes with him as the goalee are some of the frickin best action work I've seen in a mule's age.
Personally, If I was Marvel Comics and Steve Norrington, I'd hire 'Bruce Lee' to be a certain "Master of Kung Fu" in their film. Because that would just be the damn coolest thing ever.
All I know, is I'd rather watch a fake Bruce Lee in a movie than a real Jean Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal.... know what I'm saying?
Below were two tests that the company doing this did over a year ago. I'm sure they've gotten even better. Here ya go...

Hi Harry
Dunno if you've seen this but the BBC are running a story which says a film
is being made using CGI to recreate Bruce Lee. The film is to be called
Dragon Warrior and financed by ShinCine Communciations. The link to the
full story is
here!
I'm not to sure I like the sound of this Bruce is a legend and shouldn't be

no no no no a thousand times NO

If you never told me this was CGI i wouldn't have spotted it right away, especially at these sizes. Good deal.
-
I hope to god these people come to their senses and end this project now. If they need a Bruce Lee use the goalie guy from Shaolin Soccer,he's a dead ringer, but I still think it would be a shame if this thing flies.
-
These are years old...where did you get them. Are you sure they're tests? have they been working on this for 5years? Cuz that's abou when I saw them.
-
Bring back the dragon! Or get Jason Scott Lee to make action films....
-
I honestly saw these (or clips exacly like these) years ago on the web somewhere.
there is also a clip where Bruce is talking about "being formless like water",
and another with him stretching and kicking.
The clips were excellent and i wouldn't mind if i series or film was done but i'm sure it was a student who did them about 2 or even 3 years ago.
i may just be a crazy, mistaken, old brit though. -
It's pure Final Fantasy feat. Bruce Lee. Jar Jar was better.

That bastard Clouse ruined GAME OF DEATH for everyone.

Yes, they are quite old... But then the folks that were working on them back then said that their dream was to digitally bring BRUCE LEE back to life in film. The work that they have been doing for years now is a part of the upcoming projects, but using the latest lighting and skin advances in the digital form. But yes, these are OLD TESTS, I reposted them, to remind people of where they were YEARS ago.

Using CGI to finish a film is no different to using a vague lookalike in unconvincing dark glasses for Game of Death. Likewise, faking Roy Kinnear in Return of the Musketeers with some back shots and a voice actor. There have been several films where dead actors are resurrected to play themselves by doctoring old footage. I can't think of any, but I know I've seen them. I can think of the recent "duet" between Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill. My point is, I might find it distasteful and an insult to someone's memory, but so was the misuse of historical personalities in "Titanic". Just because its CGI doesn't make it any different to using another actor. Tasteful or not, you'll always offend someone.
-
With today's computer farms for number crunching the rendering process, how long will it be before the actor is dispensible. The up side, I think, is the ability to make Sci-fi that could not have been dreamed of a decade or two ago. It also means that you will be able to put the actor in places they have never been. I can see a hell of a savings by not having to go on some locations. What next?

Ok, if there is one thing the K-doc know's it's Hong Kong Action movies. Kung Fu, Gun Play, I know them all. I have made a career out of seeing them and at one time was such an expert that I had my own TV show called Friday Night Fu. As a so-called "expert" in Martial Arts films, I think this is quite possibly the worst idea in the history of bad ideas.
There is a spontainious quality that Bruce Lee has in his movies. A special form and flow. Nothing CGI can ever compare to that. In every scene he has ever shot on film, you can look at it and know that it was scripted, rehearsed, choreographed, etc. But after 100 times of watching it, it still looks like he was improvising, making it up on the spot so he could actually kick major ass on some real thugs. It always looks like they found a gang of Hong Kong punks who thought they could take out the master and told them that they would give them 100 bucks and their name in the credits if they would like to try. It still looks fresh every time. And I swear to God, that even though my VCR isn't broken, it actually looks like he gets faster each time I watch it.
The problem I have with CGI, besides not being able to duplicate the above mentioned things is that this is just not the way Bruce Lee should be remembered. His legacy and his previous works are reduced to a cartoon. A pale copy of its original form. It embarrases me that his family would choose the Yoko Ono route and go for the money instead of honoring the man they called husband and father. If the CGI version were for a childrens show (like the Jackie Chan Adventures, but with plot) I would have no problems with it. But it is not.
Bruce Lee was about movement. Without form, like water. Why reduce it to a mechanical, form based style. It does not honor the skills or the man. -
I agree this is a travesty. I am a huge Bruce Lee fan - During the 70's when other kids were seeing Bambi,my Dad used to take me to a theater that played Martial Arts flicks all day on Saturdays.
I can thing of anyone I admire more than Bruce Lee.....
The people who did this need to die a painful death.I hope the Lee Family can do something about it. -
This is from a Maya demo 2 years ago!
-
Approximately 2-years ago, I saw the demo CD for the program by Alias/Wavefront called Maya. This is the same CGI profram used in all the big Hollywood movies for the past few years. The demo had an entire segment of a CGI-created Bruce Lee, with his actual voice dubbed over it. This may very well either be a hoax, or an actual project spawned from that demo.
-
If I have to see people resurrected in CGI, it should be Madeline Kahn and Cleavon Little. Wait, that's blasphemy to. How about Andre the Giant? or Harry Hamlin, wait he isn't dead.
-
Anyone who thinks that the concept of a Bruce Lee CGI movie in and of itself is a "travesty" or a "disgrace" seems to be ovrreacting. If the script stinks, the final cgi is lacking, or the voice work sucks THEN and only THEN will it be an insult to the memory of Bruce Lee. This could be a fantastic leap forward in terms of cinema and a fitting trubute to the legend -- why not give it a chance?
-
Look how well it worked for Brandon in The Crow. Made him a star after his death with a fitting send-off. That's probably what they're thinking. Of course this is totally different since The Crow was almost done when Brandon died.

by cooler-than-thou
I agree with everyone that his likeness should be left alone. This is an absolutely evil idea.
-
Everyone is always looking for that next step in cinema, and maybe these people are on to something. They have the approval of the family because they are confident in movie's script. I would think they have a little more sentiment to the memory of Bruce Lee than some of the naysayers out there. They don't want Mr. Lee's legacy tarnished any less than you, so give it a chance. The family did....

Bruce Lee Back in Game of Death
07/18/2000
Over twenty-five years have passed since the tragic death of the master of
martial arts Bruce Lee, and fans all over the world still continue to
mourn over the loss. In a new remake of film "Game of Death," fans will
have the opportunity to watch the reincarnation of Bruce Lee on the silver
screen. The forty-five minute 3-D animation film which is titled "Bruce
Lee's Final Battle - Game of Death Finale" will also include an animation
production feature, behind the scenes footage, and of course, the makings
of the impressive special effects.
In 1973, Bruce Lee died during the filming of "Game of Death," and was
unable to see the realization of his vision. At the behest of Lee, martial
arts experts from all over the world were invited to participate in the
making of "Game of Death." These experts would guard every level of the
feared 'Tower of Death' while Lee would attempt to scale the tower and
rescue someone.
The backdrop for the story occurs in a Shaolin Temple where Bruce preaches
about the 'will to fight' to an attentive gathering of monks while he
reminisces about the final battle at the Tower of Death.
Over half a year and 3 million HK dollars have been spent of the new
renderings of "Game of Death." The most incredible innovation has been how
realistic the renderings of Lee are. The hair, eyes, and skin are
particularly very accurate. The actual sets have been recreated, such as
the bathroom, to an incredibly realistic detail.
Finally, for the first time, exclusive footage will be made available to
the public. Footage from Mr. Cheung Yan Peng's experpience with working
with Bruce in Italy during 1972-1973. A large collection of previously
unviewed pictures will be made available.
Unfortunately, only Hong Kong city goers will have the pleasure of seeing
"Bruce Lee's Final Battle - Game of Death Finale." The film will be shown
at the Convention Center. Here is the information:
Time : July 19-30 10:00am-9:00pm (fund raiser on opening night)
Admission: $20
Location : Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center Auditorium 2
For more information call : 2771 7093

Actually, the tests were not as bad as I thought it would be. It's strange, that's for damn sure. Almost as odd as seeing the postumous Oliver Reed CGI in Gladiator. If the Lee family is for it, who am I to say its wrong. I guess as long as the project is good and they can pull it off, I'd go see it. Does this mean another Ernest movie is not out of the question?!!
-
If the Lee Estate gives it their blessing, than who are we to tell them different. They have more at stake than just our idyll whimsy.
I have the full cgi movie of that promo and it was very good. I only had 1 problem with it, the realtive speed at which Bruce moved for any series of punches, kicks, throws, whatever was blaingly fast and in that promo, it was really detailed but there was no perception of that furious speed. As a technical support specialist, I know that with the ramp up of Moore's law that faster CGI processing is indeed possible and probably inevitable. -
A friend of mine had these at school 2 years ago. LAME.

When it comes to portraying a real person (even a deceased one) in a 3 Dimensional world. You are talking travesty. It can't be done in any realistic sense of the word. Final Fantasy didn't succeed either. The characters are souless. Trying to make the characters look realistic like that cannot be done by today's technological stance right now. In the future? Possibly. The Toy Story characters had more soul because they were not based on realism. These were ficticious creations that are not constrained to normal physics. This Brucle Lee project will end up looking like a long Tekken Intro. Law. eat your heart out.

hey Guys - This CG Bruce Lee has been around for ages. I have made it available on Morpheus. Go get it and share it. It is 1min 32secs of pure Bruce Lee CGi action. It is 13meg, so make sure you have a fast connection freaks, or get cut off. Search for BRUCE LEE COMPUTER and go for it.

I went to the Art Institute of Atlanta majoring in animation and these were viewed at the school nearly 3 years ago. There's also one of him doing moves and playing with numbchucks (sp)

This stinks as bad as having a CGI Martin Luther King giving his "I have a dream" speech to hawk cellphones. It's a shame that the families of these estates have no respect but just want to make more money.

this is the worst idea i've heard in ages!!! Beyond BAD!!!!
by a goonie
first off, those tests were horrible. i'm sure that Bruce will look better in the final movie, but still, that was definitive BAD CGI. it just looked horrible. there wasn't a single redeemable factor at work in that animation. now, onto what Harry said... Harry, you made the point that you would rather see a FAKE BRUCE LEE in a movie instead of a REAL Seagal or Van Damme. fair enough. i see what you're getting at. but that's still beside the point. just cuz you'd RATHER see this one thing instead of having to watch one of two washed-up stars try to act and kick their way through a movie, DOES NOT MEAN THAT WHAT YOU WOULD RATHER SEE IS A GOOD IDEA. for example: i would RATHER watch wet paint drying on a wall instead of having to sit through the horribly bloated Ralph Fiennes-starrer "Sunshine" again. BUT... that doesn't mean that watching wet paint dry is a good idea. nor does it mean it's something i want to do. it just simply means that idea "a" is slightly more appealing to me than idea "b." I just think that this is a horrible idea. let the real Bruce live on in his own movies. and let the legend live on in movies like Rob Cohen's "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story," which i thought was like the greatest martial-arts movie ever when i saw it as a kid. now, that said, i DO understand where you're coming from, Harry. my first loves/passions when i was a young kid were He-Man, Dinosaurs, and Godzilla. i was obsessed with that stuff. in a BIG way. i imagine that those four things you loved so much were to you what the three things i just mentioned above were and are to me. but personally, i feel there are better ways to pay tribute to Bruce than to (poorly) animate him and stick him in a movie.

BRUCE LEE: A WARRIORS JOUREY is the what DRAGON the Bruce Lee st
by monkey_king
John Little is doing all of Lee's fans a service by releasing all of Bruce's writings finally. I'd still love to see a published version of his script and notes from GAME OF DEATH and THE SILENT FLUTE. Bruce was one of the truly great philosophers of the 20th century, as well as being one the greatest fighters. Let's get the BRUCE LEE'S 'GAME OF DEATH' going already using the footage that was found 2 years ago by Bey Logan and using Donnie Yen as the stand-in for Bruce. Sculpt a perfect likeness of Bruce and then animate it using a sound-alike, do a CGI face over Donnie's and finish the friggin movie as Lee intended. Whoever owns the recently released 'lost footage' is doing a disservice to all of us by not letting them complete the film as Bruce wanted. Keep Robert Clouse away as well. God knows he ruined the original by using 'discarded' footage Bruce never approved in the first place. THE SILENT FLUTE deserves another chance as well. Bruce even wanted to play a Monkey King type character in that as well.
-
I know you're all entitled to your opinion and I respect this site for that, but seriously you're jumping down this film's neck before more info is brought. If Linda and Shannon (wife and daughter) approve then they must have faith in what's being done then why not give it a chance. And to you naysayers please bring this into consideration think about after he had died (sorry about the bad childhood experience there Harry). Every Hong Kong studio had something or someone that dealt with Bruce. Remember those bullshit movies with Bruce Li, Bruce Le, and my all time favorite Dragon Lee!!! They really bastardized a man better a legend who transcended martial arts film to a fucking respectable genre. So even though I am late with this posting I hope some one reads it and not get all pissed off but see some light on the subject. LONG LIVE THE DRAGON!!!
p.s. I wonder if Brandon will show up?!! -
I grew up on the memory of Bruce Lee. Nothing will ever compare to Fists of Fury or Enter the Dragon. As cool as this may sound its tragic at the same time. the man was a legend let him rest in peace.
-
What part, exactly, in Gladiator has the CGI Oliver Reed? I would like to see it for myself. I know he died before the end of filming, but I didn't know they technology-ed him back into the finished film. Intrigueing.

Harry's right, these are old, but it means that they are going to be pretty advanced now. No dickhead is going to make a CGI Lee if it won't look as good as it possibly can. Anyway, this will be a great companion piece to the CGI Turtles shit going down in Woo land. Is that really happening? Brucey looks better than Spiderman does now!
-
You might be able to get the look of him but not the essence of who Bruce Lee was. It all seems to me to be very bizarre and morbid. I was so creeped out watching those little CGI animated clips of Bruce Lee. I really can't explain why thouroughly. I guess it might be because there was no spark of life in those silicon rendered eyes. To me it's like staring at a ghost. It's just not a living breathing human being. What's next? A totally CGI rendered Al Gore for the next Presidential election? I guess that wouldn't be too bad though. The CGI Al Gore would probably have more personality and life than the real one.
-
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!! this is the seventh sign of the apocalypse! there is no safe refuge! CGI Bruce Lee! CGI Bruce Lee! WWWWWWTTTTTTTTFFFFFFF?
Are the other actors going to be CGI as well? OOOOOO MMMMMM GGGGGG!Forget it i don't even want to know! First Atomic Bombs, then Cloning human beings, and now this.....this horror. I'm dead serious... this is the stuff of nightmares...the neutering of a gender...the jizz of smurfs...we're not supposed to SEE this! UGGGHHH! I'm STILL freaked. End This NOW. Humanity WILL pay the price through Jerry Lewis CGI and Shirley Temple CGI and David Hasselhoff...real life movies... NOOOOOOOoooooooooooooOOOOO! My GOD man, what have we become....? -
Well...that's what it looks like. The Dreamcast may not be dead fater all. :)
-
This is from the Fist of Fury review: 'I remember the first time I ever cried for the loss of a star was when I was a kid, and I came out of the Capital Plaza theater having just seen ENTER THE DRAGON and I looked up to my parents and said, "I want to meet Bruce Lee!" and them telling me that "Bruce Lee Was Dead". I think that was the first time in my life where I realized that the beings on screen had mortal coils that could sputter and die. '
YOU JUST MAKE THESE THINGS UP TO TUG AT THE HEARTSTRINGS, DON'T YOU? DON'T YOU???????
-
these animations are made a few years ago by an amateur Bruce Lee fan in HK, it's been out on the net for YEARS!!!so long in fact, the site's already been shut down!!!
-
Do they have an exact computer simulation of his brain? Of course not. So it won't think like Bruce, it won't talk like Bruce, it won't create original choreography and philosophy like Bruce.
It won't fight like Bruce, because no one knows exactly how he would fight in a new movie. A real martial artists evolves and learns, and Bruce had a long way to go. No one knows how Bruce would have evolved. And if they make him say something Bruce wouldn't say, do something Bruce wouldn't do, then that will be a crime.
They had just as well make a cg Einstein and have him say, "e = mc squared, e = mc squared..." -
Bruce Lee was a very accomplished individual, but his perceived greatness has expanded each year since his death. What people now worship about him is barely what he was at all. Few people know what his true accomplishments were.
Personally I think the Kung Fu flick should move on without him.
-
Those were done back in 92 I think with Maya version 1. The whole clip included Lee doing some of his more famous moves. They were a mock up of an actual intview that was done with Lee. It is amazing though to see the interview and the animation side by side. I used to have the full movie file. You can find it on morpheus though.
-
That stuff is at least 3 years old. It was floating around CGI graphics circle for years. It looked like the CG was copied from existing live action Bruce Lee footage(interviews and films). Some of it is really cool, but it didnt seem it was meant to pass for real.
-
I can't believe the creator of this site is getting worked up about a cartoon bastardization of Bruce Lee. If you were such a fan, you would appreciate the fact that this is nothing but slander. I'm sorry that it is difficult for you to let you childhood memories go, but this is just sad.
-
These look like the tests shot from that animated Lucozade commercial they used him in a year or two ago. Same type of animation, isn't it?
-
i think that the bruce lee cgi should be more digital and not so robotics and thene it will be perfect
