HERC Reviews The X-FILES Opener!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
X-FILES 9.1 FAQ
What’s it called?
“Nothing Important Happened Today.”
Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz.
What does TV Guide say?
“The ninth-season opener continues to probe the mystery of Scully's baby, William. Integral to the storyline may be guest star Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), who makes a provocative entrance in the two-part episode as a woman involved in the death of an EPA official. The premiere also introduces Cary Elwes as FBI A.D. Brad Follmer, an old flame of Reyes who advises her to abandon Doggett and his investigation of Deputy Director Kersh (James Pickens Jr.). And Follmer isn't the only one questioning the case, as Doggett learns he's missing not only key evidence but also key allies.”
How long has it been since Mulder kissed Scully?
A matter of hours.
How long till Lucy Lawless shows up?
She appears about 30 seconds after the fade in.
Why is her entrance provocative?
She’s wearing a skimpy black number. She takes a drive with an EPA official she just met. She begins rubbing his thigh, then rams his leg down on the accelerator. Watery death ensues.
Is she suicidal?
No. It appears that Lawless’ character (let’s call her Aquagirl) either can breathe underwater or is very good at holding her breath.
Lawless still using that American accent?
She is.
Any other intimations of nakedness?
Lucy Lawless’ body double wanders around naked a great deal. And we get a lingering gander at Agent Reyes’ topless torso early in the first act.
Now that Duchovney’s off the show, is the “falling Mulder” still in the title credits?
No. The title credits, in fact, have received likely the biggest makeover of the series history. The music seems to have been redone. There are updated photos in the FBI idenification cards. And the sequence ends with a spooky 11-year-old standing alone in a field (representative perhaps of Scully’s baby in a few years?).
Hmm. Any new signs that Scully’s baby might be some kind of alien clone?
Scully notices that the mobile above the baby’s crib spins in a slightly mysterious manner. Is the baby telekinetic? Are outside forces making it rotate?
Who’s in the title sequence these days?
Gillian Anderson. Robert Patrick. Annabeth Gish. Mitch Pileggi.
Any other changes?
The “previously on” recap has been moved to after the teaser and title credits.
The big news?
Duchovny’s off the show, but Mulder isn’t exactly. His offscreen presence is being kept very prominent, one imagines, in anticipation of the recently announced movie that will reunite Mulder and Scully.
Offscreen presence?
There’s a figure showering in Scully’s apartment. If it’s not Mulder, Scully got some ‘splainin to do. Later, when Doggett learns that all evidence of last season’s parking garage melee has disappeared, Doggett heads to Mulder’s place to find it empty and abandoned. When he goes to Scully, she only says that Mulder’s “gone. He’s just gone.”
Besides Mulder, what other key allies is Doggett missing?
Skinner, who urges him to drop the case. Skinner fears for the safety of Mulder, Scully and baby if Doggett doesn’t halt his investigation of Kersh.
Does Scully know where Mulder is?
She likely has an inkling. When Doggett points out that it makes no sense that Mulder would leave Scully and the baby unprotected, she replies, “It makes sense in its own way. It’s all I can tell you.” When Doggett asks why Scully no longer trusts him, Scully points out that forces that tried to kill Doggett, Skinner and Mulder last season are still out there, “they are unstoppable, and they are inside the FBI.” Scully remains otherwise tightlipped.
Do the Exposition Boys, er, the Lone Gunmen turn up?
They do, as a favor to Doggett. They seem to have fallen on hard times! Langley is especially blue. They turn up some info on the EPA guy.
Are they in the company of Jimmy and/or Yves?
Of course not.
What’s good?
There’s plenty of twisty plot to keep us interested. And happily, the skeptic role Scully used to fill has for once been eliminated. All four of the leads seem to need no convincing that very strange things continue to be afoot.
What’s not so good?
The characters on the “X-Files” remain some of the blandest on television. Perhaps if they weren’t always so purely reactive…
How does it end?
With a cliffhanger. Doggett has an unexpected encounter with Aquagirl.

The show is as bland as Irish Food after Lent.

Although Mulder is gone and I am completely against the idea of the show going on without Mulder I'll still watch. With news of the new movie I will need to keep up on the plot (and the arc still interests me).
-
The majority of the reviews trashed this season and whats funny is these same critics praised last season. They've obviously woken up and realize that 1013 and Chris Carter are one trick ponies.
This show has become a pathetic farce and anybody who continues to support this crap are insane. By supporting this show, you're saying "Hey, I don't care if the writing sucks, I don't need continuity, I don't need the show to make sense, I just want my weekly fix."
This show used to be better than that. And what happened to the fans that cared? My wife and I will NEVER support anything 1013 does for what they did to this show. And as for the movie, why pay for crap when you can get it for free? -
So what if its a little crappy? I watch TV for fun, not because its High Art. Good Lord, the way some reviewers talk you'd think they were paying for their TV shows or something.
-
Surprised to hear about the bad reviews from other critics, I pulled up my local paper's take: "The opener is craftily written (by series creator Chris Carter and executive producer Frank Spotnitz), solidly acted and moodily photographed." What did USA Today, NYTimes, Chicago Tribune say?
-
...was the most enjoyble thing about last season.
Even though The X-Files preformed Fonzi's water-ski trick with the marine mammal two years ago, it will still be remembered as one of the greatest television shows ever made, and I'll still be watching it untill CC finally gives up the goast.
I hope the movies will be good, like Star Trek> -
but I would rather watch classics like "Stretch", "Tooms", "Beyond the Sea" (my favorite all time ep), and the ep with Giovanni Ribisi as that boy who was zapped by lightning, wasn't it called "DBO" or something since his name was Darren? Oh, and the vampire ep, and another favorite, the "Clyde Bruckner" episode that won an Emmy (for writer Darren Morgan) it's also the one where the character Clyde see's Mulder's death from "auto erotism"....(!?). Oh, and there's "The Calusari" - about cock roaches (good one, to!). You know I can go on simply for the fact that this show has produced many, many really top notch episodes. It's very sad to see it now, a shadow of it's former glory.
-
I have to admit I got lost a long time ago. The show just got too comlicated with it's plots and conspiracies, and I just didn't pay close enough attention to follow. I felt a small ache in my heart when the season openner's credits rolled (it's not the same without David D. aka Mulder's pic). I used to be soo into this show, not I just have it on for background noise. BTVS has become my favorite show, and I have a feeling Alias will be what I will be watching, and X-Files MAY be taped. I think it's about time for Chris Carter, to just let the dream die. Finish it off with another movie, I can't say it will be a HUGE hit, but one last hoorah should suffice. Also, why was Langley's face all BLUE anyway? I never got into The Lone Gunmen series, so I have to assume it had to do with the last aired episode.
-
I used to love this show. I mean really love it. X-Files produced some of the finest moments on television. Smugbug listed a few of its finest hours. And, as I read his list, in light of what the show has become, I couldn't help feeling a little sad ... almost nostalgic for what once was. I still hold a faint hope that it may recapture some of its magic. But with its complete lack of continuity, multiple unresolved plot lines, and now the introduction of a NEW CONSPIRACY!!! (Mystery chemical in the drinking water), somehow I doubt it will be able to pull it off. BTW ... What happened to the Andromeda reviews? I know it's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but ... And did you see Romy in this week's ep? ... is it wrong to lust after a starship? --Be seeing you.

As someone that has loved this show and never missed an episode I am saddened to see how far this show has fallen. The first episode now that DD is gone and this is what they put on to try and keep their audience?
I can't fault the actors. They all did their parts. The story was just got awful. These mythology stories are always a jumbled mess of questions with little or no answers. The best stories this show ever produced were stand alone scary stories. If they are gonna keep these mythology stories coming then they need to sit down and watch last seasons Buffy to see how to do a good job of moving a plot line along to a decent conclusion.
Also has anyone else noticed that this web site runs so crappy now? It seems like for the last 1-2 months this site has gotten SSSOOO SSSLLLOOOWWW. -
Was this the best season premiere ever, No. But did it suck or signal the death of it either, NO.
This opener is a two parter folks. As with most two parters the last hour is where the most answers are. Granted w/this show sometime the answers just generate more questions. For those who think this was rushed, poorly paced, or whatever consider this. Within the show its been 48 hours since Scully gave birth in the great Georgia outback somewhere surronded by supersoldiers or aliens or both. Mulder as departed for reasons to make since later, or so its alluded. Even with Mulders physical presence gone his essence is going to be felt. With the recent news of another movie I'm of the opinion we'll see him again come February and/or May sweeps. Why? Well it would answer where he's been and doing that would benefit Scully more than being there. It would also make him an active FBI agent again allowing him to do the movie. This is all pending contracts for the movie I'm sure.
I'll stop for now, its probably too long for some short attention spans to read through anyway. -
Since the movie, its obvious the writers had no idea on what direction to take this show.
A good writer should have a blueprint and have emergency measures in place when an actor wants to leave the show.
And you just can't keep taking these little detours along the way. They should finish what they started instead of doing it half ass.
Endless plot lines that never fully finish, which are never concluded can only be endured for so long.
And the casting of Lucy lawless was merely a stunt. If they were truly serious, they could have made her character's appearance not look like it was Xena.
And turning the show into a Law And Order: X-Files Unit ensemble will not change the fact that the show is past its peak with the writers only doing so much just so they can continue recieving their paycheck. -
If you get this offended over people lamenting the quality diminishment of a show they once enjoyed, then I shudder to think what you're like in real life.
Its just a TV show and even when I loved it back when it great, I didn't care if people dissed it.
People are entitled to their opinion.
And the general consensus among many is the show has not evolved but devolved.
-
Seeing the trio tonight made me very sad that the Gunman show didn't get renewed. I really enjoyed that last year. One of the better shows on TV. Oh well, I guess the network execs and general public know better than me. Whatever. And tonights premiere was a little bland, but I still like Doggett and am holding out hope that Cary Elwes will bring something new to the show. Am I the only one who doesn't like Monica Reyes though? Yeesh.

I'm not a hardcore Mulder fan but I read the facts. DD's lawsuit was similar to Steven Bochco's and Alan Alda's lawsuits.
It was about getting one's fair share.
And the gossip on the net, is there are other circumstances to Duchovny's departure. -
""The X-Files," entering its ninth season, is now a
card-carrying member of the living dead, a zombie. It walks and talks, but it's

Good thing Michael Straczynski never worked with Chris Carter
by thorne76
Their styles could never blend together.
Straczynski at least plans things out and knows how to end a story.
-
Are you sure about that auto-erotic asphyixiation (sp?) thing? I always thought you were led to believe that Clyde was talking about Mulder but was actually talking about himself. I've only seen it once, but wasn't the final shot of Bukman dead with a plastic bag over his head? Doesn't that indicate he saw his own death? Anyone? Anyone?
-
I think I was more in love with the idea of the show "X-Files" than the reality of it. I still remember in the beginning how there was going to be definite "closure" to the whole conspiracy arch. I was overjoyed, here was a show that would last for its contract, wrap everything up and go out on top. I remember watching the first few seasons, trying to pick up all the clues, being annoyed when it was a stand alone episode that didn't advance the conspiracy. I remember thinking, "I wonder how CC is going to pull all of this together in the final 4 or 5 episodes..." As much as I hated the thought of the show ending, I couldn't wait for it all to be sorted out.
I liked the idea of having a show where the characters knew as much as the audience. How could you not like Mulder and Scully, when they were at least close to the intelligence of the audience? Not like the Law&Order where the guy they pick up 5 minutes into the show CAN'T be the murderer
Alas apparently it is not to be. Instead of wrapping everything up and going out as one of the most creative, well "crafted" shows on television...the show, and the idea has fizzled. destroyed by contracts, by sweeps stunts, and by the loss of the story. I haven't watched it regularly in a season or so, and I feel betrayed by the creators. I guess it takes a show like the Sopranos to have the guts to go out when the stories have been told. -
TV, that is...it's the Fox Network's utter inability to produce new hits, save "Malcolm in the Middle," that's led to the forced extension of "The X-Files." When they finally get a show that SHOULD be a hit, "24," they have no idea how to promote even aided up an updraft of great critical buzz, and it ends up fourth (!) in its timeslot. In an ideal world, it would've ended two seasons ago, but as long as it's the No. 2 drama for the 18-35 demo, it's going to stay around. That said, although this season premiere was turgid and stuffed with utterly bland scenes and dry exposition and some dumb dialogue ("It makes sense in its own way," "You know something!", etc.), this show is still better than most of what clutters the coaxial wasteland.
-
For any drama to work we have to have some CLUE as to the characters' motivation. We can have mystery and head-feints INSIDE a general plot we understand driven by characters we understand, but the whole goddamn thing cannot be completely up in the air. I submit that the only character we remotely understand in the first ep is Scully, and that is a reach. She wants to protect her baby, we get that. But otherwise she might as well be from the moon, gliding around in her black pants and fitted-blouse with that zonded-out twitchy-eye look. Oh, but this time there is a baby on her shoulder. Christ, she even glides mournfully over to a screaming infant! How much better would it have been to see a realistic new mom Scully: frazzled, beat, and terrified. Scully could answer the door for Doggett, weapon in hand screaming at him to disarm. "Give me the gun mother fucker!" she'd yell, only the last part would be drowned out by the wailing baby. How different and out of the formula that would be, then we could get onto the Basil Exposition part of the show with a little jolt signifing that real human emotions are at work. But no. Same old, same old. At this point we need some girl-on-girl action with the hot bitch Agent Reyes and Aquagirl or Scully or her mom or some damn body to keep this mess remotely worth watching.
-
So the X-Files which had a well written suspensful season opener is over with but that peice of trash Buffy is still agreat show according to so many of you? Did any of you see the musical episode of Buffy? That episode alone is reason enough for the show to be cancelled. I apprecitae maybe some of you have certain preferences that might lean you towards enjoying musiclas but damn, buffy was horrible. No one could sing and it was an outride stupid show. If you want to talk about a show being past its prime, lets look at Buffy. She died twice, had a mysterious little sister show up and now are doing themed episodes. Now this is a show way past its prime. A show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer should not be taking itself this seriously.
-
The mythology eps have been hit or miss at best since the fourth season. They're interesting in that often the biggest changes will occur in them, but other than that, they're quite tedious. I think Chris Carter has a talent (or at least used to) for shaping the overall picture, but when he writes an episode it almost always disappoints me. I intend to reserve judgment until we see some stand-alones. I will admit that I am worried about how humorless everyone is in the show. I'm not looking for the comedies from a couple years ago, but at the end of last season, when Mulder returned, his attitude injected some life into the show. Reyes needs to be more different from Doggett.
-
CelticGuy: Buffy is good because a)it has a wicked sense of humour,
and doesn't take itself overly seriously all the time. When was the last time we had a funny X-files ep?
b)the writers understand the concept of continuity
c) the characters have well defined and different personalities
d) the story arcs have conclusions
I used to like the X-files, but it jumped the shark long before DD left. The season premier last night bored me to tears.
The only reason I watched it was for Lucy Lawless. And I gave up and stopped watching before it ended. -
It's over folks, stick a fork in it. It's done. Alias rules.
-
The same ones over and over and over. Buffy dies and comes back, seen it already. Buffy falling for a vamp and so unsure of what to do, seen it already. A big bad guy will appear adn the whole season will be behoind much mayhem til the seaosn finale where they face off, seen it almost every season now. Buffy used to be witty and I did enjoy it when it was a light weight fun show, now its laughably bad, even before the singing debacle. Buffy tasted heaven then returns to earth, is this a funny episode? No and frankly how can they transition form all the death and sadness into any kind of fun and hijinks without betraying what has happened previously? They cant. The show should be a lighthearted fun romp, not hard core drama like they are poiorly attemping to make it. Angel is still agreta show and has teh heart of what buffy once was. I agree X-Files is not as great as it once was but after watching buffy so far this season, i will take the worst that Carter has to offer before I take the best whedon does. Until X-files does a singing episode I can still enjoy that show. Buffy has become a chore to watch and usually I just flip around and watch maybe half of it.
-
I watched the first few episodes and while the opner was enetertaining it went very downhill after that. The concept of the show is so unbeleivable that I cant help but laugh at it half the time. Plus if Syd is supposed to be such a great agent, how come I have seen her get her ass kicked like 3 times already. Plus they need to make up their mind if they wanna be an action show or a felicity rip off, much of the friend stuff just seemed so out of place. Plus all you people that are bashing x-files saying its run its course, how many more episodes can they milk out of this concept? Its already getting kind of stupidly rediculous where one of these elite agencies must really be extremely dumb.

I think the early ratings say alot about the state of the show
by xenia30
From Mediaweek
" On Fox, an approximate half-hour NFL primetime overrun
(10.6/17) at 7 p.m. led into positive season opening levels for
King of the Hill (8.2/12), The Simpsons (10.4/14) and
Malcolm in the Middle (10.3/14) from 7:30-9 p.m. Less
significant was an 8.5/11 for the ninth-season opening
episode of The X-Files at 9 p.m., which dipped a considerable
21 percent in rating and three share points in the second
half-hour (9.5/13 to 7.5/10). X-Files retention out of Malcolm
was a could-have-been better 83 percent."
-
I have loved this show since season 1, and I have to say the show is so far gone now its not even interesting anymore. The whole damn "mythology" is 1 step forward, 3 steps sideways. All characters act mysterious and refuse to reveal helpful information for no other reason then the script pacing demands it. Whereas Joss Whedon and company have Buffy firmly under control and consistent, The X-Files is introducing elements and characters seemingly at random. I don't even know why Dogget was at the Water Treatment Plant at the end because the phone rang and rather then calling the person back, I cared so little about the show I talked to them.
The spruced up title sequence was kinda cool, the rest was "been there, done that."
Duchovny leaving may have been the smartest thing for him in the long run if this premiere was any indication. -
"Whereas Joss Whedon and company have Buffy firmly under control and consistent"
When exactly di dthis happen? During the movie? the show? when she died the first time or second? When she is a happy go lucky slayer or the sulking moddy slayer? This show is about as inconsistent of any show I have ever seen and talk about mello-drama. Real character development when willow is pining over Xander than bam, she is a lesbian now, real developed.Lots of mystery and suspense in buffy too right?
I really thought she was dead, I didnt know she would come back again. Please, Buffy can be enetrtaining at times but its not this fantatsci amazing show many of you make it out to be.So fdor anyone who saysd there is no suspense or mystery left in x-files, tell me where it is going. I know I can sure as hell tell you what will happen on buffy next week and for the most part of this season. If you want to know, just watch any of theirother seasons, it will repeat yet again. -
1) There is a working bible for Buffy.
2) Joss Whedon plans everything in advance
On The X-Files, the powers that be have basically made it up as they went along since the movie.
What happened to the black oil?
What happened to the artifcat?
Gibson Praise? And look at the crappy way they closed the arc about Mulder's sister. This show can't even properly finished what it started let alone start new plot points.
-
working bibles eh? Have you seen this working bible? No? so your assuming fomr an interview or something there is one eh? Plan for the show eh? So changing networks shouldnt change anything right, like the angel/ buffy dynamic. Problems are solved, well maybe because the problems are an episode long each time and buffy wins. But once again I am sure I will get a reply saying how wrong I am without addressing the repoetiveness of Buffy and not mentioning how unwatchable that muscial crapfest the otehr night was. It was unwatchable and really just cemented the fact that Buffy will never be taken seriously.

It's like they hit the reset button on all the characters...
by gboybama
Nothing they do or say makes any sense in context. Where's the memory? And it's supposed to be just a few hours after the last episode?
-
There is no consistency to Alias. You claim that having her get beat up makes it realistic? Becaus ein a sitaution like that they would beat her up not put a bullet in her brain right? The show seems to want to be taken serioulsy but when they have opne heart surgery going on in the back of an ambulance to remove a time bomb form some ones heart. Or how about breaking into a place in stealth so you wear all black and just let your fire engine red hear flapping in the wind, that wouldnt stand out. And the evil organization that would kill Syds boyfriend but not her and still trust her? That does not add up. By the way nothing is more annoying then talk-backers who tell you whats annoying about posters or those that quickly gl;ance at a post and reply to it without thinking or realizing that their post is either invalid or makes no sense but they feel the need to defend their show at any cost.
-
When I was reading the Avengers right after Cap, Iron Man, and Thor left. We've got Hawkeye...
In a sense the series is starting over. I hope it survives the harsh public opinion.
-
Just thought I'd return the favor Smitty1976.
I'm not a big hardcore Buffy fan but I can read beyond the name of the show and see the metaphors and themes.
Its not the best show out there but the writers make an effort to make the characters consistent, and they practice continuity.
You do know what continuity is don't you?
Had The X-Files had an adequate foundation to build upon and emergency plans to incorporate if an actor left the show on his own accord, they wouldn't be in the mess they're in.
And no, I don't watch Alias, I watch L&0: Criminal Intent, which is the most interesting of the 3 shows IMHO. -
Its obvious this show will be in its last season. The real test will be next Sunday.
If the show was good, then the ratings would 'not' have dropped in its second half hour. Its obvious people are waking up to the fact that they are being manipulated.
This all goes back to what the poster Valeriann said. TV show only have so big of a lifespan.
And rewriting the show into an ensemble "Law And Order: X-Files Unit will not change the fact that the show is past its peak". -
"Had The X-Files had an adequate foundation to build..."
OK thats whay Buffy had a feaure film made out of it that made over 50 million dollars right? Oh wait , the buffy movie was a friggin joke, the X-files movie did make over 50 million though. Not too shabby for a show with no foundation. And as for having an actor leave, you think Buffy will go on once Gellars contract run sout? You think she will sign on for more? No way, shes gonna be running for movie stardom and what contingency plan do you think buffy will have then? And for the record I like Law and Order: CI, but I think SVU is better so I catch CI when its on USA later at night. -
Well if you had any knowledge of the trials and tribulations of the Buffy movie, you would realize Joss has said before the first episode of the TV show he wish it had not happened. The studio screwed with it to the point where even he had trouble recognizing it.
I do find it interesting though that someone who dislikes Buffy so much knows so much about the "musical crapfest". I mean, I know if I hate a show so much, I wouldn't be watching any of their episodes. And if I disliked a show so much and did still watch every episode I would think I was a very lonely, sad individual. And if I hadn't watched the "musical crapfest" but thought I would comment in it still, I would still think I was a lonely, sad indvidiual.
At least Buffy makes sense, something X-Files can't claim since very early on. -
Last season, I felt, was quite good. If you remember the season before that, it sucked. It dragged, it was boring and uninvolving (save a few episodes, most notably the "Cops" parody). I think they revitalized the show, briefly, by adding Dogget and taking away Mulder. It gave the characters something to strive for, something to really go after. But now that Mulder has been back and gone again, I think it's time to shut the show down. What's wrong with just putting out a movie every few years? Odds are all these ideas concentrated into a tight, compelling 2-hour movie would work a hell of a lot better than dragging them out over the course of a season. Course, I could be wrong, and this season might rock. We'll see.

What a moaning bunch of gay boy bitches you are. Fucking moan moan moan. X-Files beats all other shows hands down - go and wank to Buffy if you want, I want good stories and excellent acting which the X-Files provides year after year.
Heres to another 9 years. Quick you wankers! Buffy is wearing a tight dress! Yowsers! -
Can things get any worse?
-
the ratings may be down, but there's only so much you could do with characters like Mulder and Scully for nine years, a refocusing on Reves and Dogget could give the show a shot in the arm it needs. BUT, if its still on the air when the new flick comes out, it could hurt the Box Office tremendously. Still, it was slick X-Fileish as always, and by throwing in two new leads, this could be an interesting way to continue the series without dragging out the old leads to make it seem like the same old shite.

Those that have a problem with part one(this I stress) of the opener need to reevaluate some things. One, since when was everything on TXF ever explained right up front. Two, we have new characters whose are going to be explored more througly 5-7eps down the road. Three, a mythology that is inventing itself new to us with this "water contamination". New characters new myths. Then of course it has to attempt to overcome all the "Mulders gone hand me a tissue the shows dead" folks. Come on now this isn't the first time a show has been kept up w/o a founding cast member. You can go allllll the way back to like "Bewitched" and the Darren swap. Moving forward to "Cheers" and replacing Shelly Long with Kirste Alley. Heck even sooner was STVoyager adding Jeri Ryan and dropping Jennifer Lien. Granted its only three examples but its what springs to mind. They all had varing degrees of succees, the point is they succeeded. With new of a second X-Files movie I'm of the mind that DDuchovny and CCarter will make nice work it out and we'll see DD back by Feb and or May sweeps. We need to cause A)It can wrap up additional loose ends and B) Serve as a spring board into the second movie.
I watch Buffy and love it. The only true comparison IMHO is that both are long running shows and when that happens it becomes formulaic(sp).
I've been watching Alias and find I like it. Several reasons A)Its fun televison. B)There is much to explore in something new. C)Its formula is yet to be laid open or event discovered by the writers which means its like your old favs Buffy and X-Files were before they got established. I'll be taping Alias but watching X-Files. Mark my words talkbackers for all those who think Alias is the best thing since FIRE in 4/5 years the same folks will say Alias is dead and boring bring on sometning new.
As much as I like the Mulder/Scully dynamic its the conspiracy I really dig. As long as the new leads have some passion about the truth I'll watch.
Long Live the X-Files. -

anybody who wants this show to last another 9 years is insane
by raingirl
All good things must come to an end eventually.
The X-Files should have ended when it was on top. The longer the show drags on, it will only be known as the show that didn't know when to quit. -
...and I had been a faithful "X-Files" fan since the beginning of Season Two. I actually liked most of last season and even parts of the season before ("Triangle" was one of my favorite episodes they ever did). But "The X-Files" without Fox Mulder is like the search for the Holy Grail without King Arthur. The show was always about HIS quest for the truth, his search for his sister (I will never forgive CC for the lame-ass resolution to that story). Plus, as a 'shipper, I got the ending I always wanted out of the show--Mulder and Scully kissing, holding their baby. So it's over for me.
And as far as the whole "Buffy"/"X-Files" thing: I like "Buffy". I liked "X-Files". The musical episode of "Buffy" was amazing--one of the most fun, fresh things I've seen on TV in a long time. It reminded me of how "The X-Files" used to have a sense of humor (episodes like "Jose Chung" and "Clyde Bruckman") and poke fun at itself. -
Ok, look- the X-files isn't dead. It's still an entertaining show. I was entertained enough to not even notice that the hour was almost over when the cliffhanger came. Past it's prime? Unarguably. The show doesn't as much suffer from continuity holes as it suffers from having become so complex that no person who doesn't eat breath and sleep the show can actually remember everything they've done. I've been watching it for years now, and it's all become one big jumble in my head. And, of course, the fact that we have yet to be actually FILLED IN to what is going on- we've just been given partial answers about parts of the conspiracy. Without mulder, it's suffering. But, it's still worth watching. Even if it will never be wrapped up in one neat package (much like things in real life), it's still a show that is capable of creating suspence and drama without degenerating into sappy melodrama.

I have been with The X-Files from the very beginning, ever since Mulder had his first glimpse of Scully's ass in pink underwear. Wooo hoo! I have loved every episode, from the worm man to the bug man. I would love to see it go as long as possible to give some new characters a chance to go in new directions. For the past 8 seasons there have been ups and downs. ****But I don't see any reason why pathetic and jealous so called former fans of the show would bash it for some crazy reason. What's this crap I hear???? >>>>>"Mulder's gone, end the show." "The ending for the story of Mulder's sister was told wrong, screw the show." "Eight years is long enough. It's dead." "The show is full of holes." "Alias is better."(NOT) "I don't understand it anymore." If you don't understand it, catch reruns on FX. If you don't like it, don't watch. >>>>As a loyal viewer of The Files, I do not give up on the show because of over-analyzations. Some of you who complain and bash the show just because you are sick and tired of it are correct for your own reasons. But you won't change a damn thing complaining about it. So that leaves the question: "Why take the time to post hateful remarks about the show when you are still watching it?" If you don't like what's going on, don't watch it and SHUT UP. You talk the talk, but you don't walk the walk. Oh, Alias sucks, and I don't watch it.

its like a new spin off in a way. Im gonna realy get in to this. I feel let down but the X-Files not wraping up some plot points. But this might be a great season of tv for the X-Files. -Duty
-
ok, let me just say i am a t.v. junkie. example: i saw two days of the superfriends marathon on boomerang, literally. i'm not a from the begining fan of the x-files so i don't have the big emotional investment. i look forward to more episodes. i like doggett and reyes. scully has to be the backbone. i liked the way she kinda took the mulder role and john took the scully role. its not the same show but i'm not going to give up yet. one last thing buffy is a great show and just because people like it doesn't mean they want to "wank off" while watching. oh yeah one last last thing the "xena chick" is also known as lucy lawless. peace to all.
-
Sorry if you don't like the complaining Bud, but just to let you know its not going to stop.
This once great show has become a sad joke and it deserves every bashing it gets. -
I don't know if its their lack of education or if they just don't care. You'd think they want the show to have the same standards of quality the early seasons had.
And they better get used to the bashing, the longer these drag this show on, the more ridicule it will get. -
After it was over I tried to think of what it was about the episode. Oh, yeah. They've done this story before in several different episodes and this time it's Dana's kid instead of someone else's. I expect they'll be bringing in more "name" actors until the series ends since they can't think of any new directions for the story. At least the credits are new, but by the end of the season they won't seem to be anymore. I think I've gotten another hour of my life back.
-
Scully's hair sure got alot longer in 48 hours.
-
Jeez, I must be the only one who liked the opener and most of all
will GIVE IT A CHANCE. It amazes me how psychic a lot of you are, since you seem to know already that every episode of this season sucks. -

I think it's good enough for now, but they have to do better
by lobanhaki
I wish they would take more care with the appearances of the Lucy Lawless character, because she's coming and going, it seems, without much logical motivation for being able to take out her targets(how would she know that the EPA guy would be where he would be? How would she know that agent Dogget would be where he was?) They need to be writing things with a sense of the audience's need for discovery, additional to their need of logic, because the first will never work properly without the second.

can go take a "swim" with AquaGirl at the deep-end of the pool, if you get my drift. WAAA-Waaa-waaa, David Duchovny ain't on da show no more! So what, let the guy have a life. Of course he was great as Mulder, but I think the show's got spunk enough to make it without him. WAAA-Waaa-waaa, this first show was too complex and leaves too many loose ends! It used to be cool to complain that entertainment was "dumbed down", instead we now complain that too many brain cells are required. Also, it's a two-parter guys and one that is supposedly starting the new CONSPIRACY ARC. That's right, we finally get some scraps as to who those "bump necks" really are. WAAA-Waaa-waaa, the show is a) dead, or b) past its prime, or c) bland! All of this based upon a single show?!? It seems to me that this opener had at least the same going for it as did last years opener. Or was it the fact of Mulder shouting "Scuullleeeeee" that really got your motors running. Yippee, Mulder was still in the show, pardon me, but, LOL.
You guys disgust me. Nothing but fair weather fans, I say! I LIKED the new season opener. I LIKED seeing Mitch Pileggi finally getting an FBI card and some up front recognition. I'm LOOKING FORWARD to seeing what they've come with to fill the Duchovny void. I'm ALSO GLAD I can tape Alias so I don't have to choose. GO Chris Carter, GO X-FILES! -
TV Shows only have a certain lifespan. This show is not prepared to last forever. IT NEEDS TO END before it becomes an even bigger embarrasment.
-
Long time X-files. Been watching since the pilot. THis show is DEAD! Whoever wrote that review about the show being "a zombie" is right on. Chris Carter fucked it some up.. Duchovny and his prima donna attitude fucked it up some more. Finally, Fox network, with its greedy attitude, fucked it up some more until it's now an muddled, unfunny, uninspired, un-thrilling mess!! As for the clueless fans still hailing this "shell of its former self" show.. Take a look at the first 4 seasons of the show and compare with the last two seasons. Alias is the best Sunday night show and the one I'll be watching. Buh-Bye X-Files.
-
Okay, so as I live in the UK I haven't seen the new seasons of Buffy or The X-Files, but the whole point of tv shows is change - they don't stay the same forever! Buffy had some really deep episodes in Season 5, and despite all the changes in Season 8, The X-Files still had the sense of mystery, and hello, continuity! The episode with the alien babies, linking with Seasons 4 and 5, Krycek etc. The whole point of The X-Files is to imply, to suggest, not give it all to the audience. And as for Buffy, like the X-Files it expermients with the boundaries of tv. Just wait to see where the writers are going before jumping to conclusions.
Yeah David Duchovny's gone, but that leaves space for the other characters to develop. -
And sorry but if you think Season 8 had continuity, you're wrong.
Sure they used characters from The Pilot but it wasn't even good continuity. The rest of the time they make it up as they go along and that does NOT make innovative writing. -
Mulder's abduction, the seach for him, the consequences. The problem wasn't and isn't continuity, it's time. The show has been around for 8 years and it's starting to wear thin with the audience. Like anything, it eventually begins to lose it's appeal, and that's what seems to be the problem. Plus, having the movie and then continuing the series wasn't a good idea. They went too big, and now people are disappointed that it's still not at that level. I agree that it's not as good as it once was, but it's not because of the writing or continuity, it's because the whole idea of the show is wearing thin with the audience. And just because it's not as good as it was, it doesn't mean that it's worthless now.
