Talk Back Fodder For ATTACK OF THE CLONES! Quint Chimes In!!!!

Published at:  Nov 02, 2001 3:51:50 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here. I have not yet seen the ATTACK OF THE CLONES teaser that is supposed to be out on MONSTERS, INC. today. No, I am not against seeing it, nor am I not excited to see it, but let's face it the real trailer is coming on HARRY POTTER, so excuse me if I don't rush straight out in my imbalanced state to see a trailer that I know will inevitably find its way online in one pirated form or another very shortly. Which Lucasfilm will immediately hit with cease and desists and threats of legal actions, but inevitably the trailer will end up being hosted by some anonymous server on some island ruled by Col Kurtz in the headhunting clans of some forgotten tribe.

I will probably hold off till the insane crowds die down and I can hobble my way painlessly to a very early Monday Morning screening. Having said that, the descriptions of this first trailer have not been being felt as being a complete mind agog of coolness, nor have they been being described as something tired and trite.

The main criticism that I have heard is that the teaser is less than inspiring. However, that for anyone that loves STAR WARS, that you watch with great excitement because... well it is Star Wars. However, that is just the opinions of the folks that have written me so far. I figure you have your own opinion about this first teaser for ATTACK OF THE CLONES. I assume your legs carried you to that first screening this morning and that you are about to dish out your every reaction to having seen the second coming. I do have a warning though, I have heard from some folks that claim that their theaters got a memo asking to pull the trailer from in front of MONSTERS, INC. And I have heard that a couple of folks didn't see the trailer. As is typical, I'm sure some disappointment and removals are expected.... As heck, I'm sure the underage projectionists of the world already have the trailer available for purchase on Ebay in 35mm seeking a fortune, but not realizing that Lucasfilm inevitably has folks ready to cancel their auctions with legal actions.

So... In a nutshell, what did you think? Here's your talk back to think about it....

Now QUINT has signed in with his opinion on the trailer...

Ahoy there, squirts. 'Tis everybody's favorite crusty ol' seaman, Quint, here to give you my opinion of the Episode II trailer. I had seen Monsters, Inc twice before its release and neither time did it have the trailer attached. Being the geek I am, not to mention the Star Wars whore, I hit Monsters, Inc again this morning to see the trailer. Now, I had just seen Life As A House and had one fear alleviated. Hayden can act. Good. Great. But how was Ep. 2 going to turn out as a whole? Was Lucas going to take the fan criticism he got for Episode 1 to heart or was he going to stay the course?

Get to the point, I hear you folks saying... How was the trailer? OK, OK... jeez... The trailer, as a teaser trailer, does its job. It tells us, the audience, nothing, but shows us enough captivating images to whet our appetites a bit, get us hungry for more. I'm not going to go in and describe the trailer shot for shot. A great many people have already done so and you can just go out and see it for yourself anytime you want. I am going to tell you what I liked and didn't like about the trailer, though.

What I liked: The tone of the film. If the trailer represents the whole film tonally, then we're headed into some dark, dark territory. Nearly every shot in the trailer is darkly lit, shot at night, etc. The CG seems to be handled better. I never would have believed I would say this, but the CG Yoda looks damn impressive. Hell, it's head over heels better lookin' than the puppet used in Episode 1. Jango Fett looks badass. Obi-Wan floating in a futuristic Bacta Tank looking thing is cool as hell. The new locations. Unlike some others that have seen the trailer, I like the city in the ocean and don't think it looks overly CG. I loved the shot of R2 in a room with laser beams all over the floor. I love seeing 3PO whole again. I love the crispness of the HD 24p Camera. It didn't look pixilated or digital. It looked like super sharp film.

What I didn't like: In terms of content, I can think of nothing that rubbed me the wrong way with the trailer. That shot of all the clones marching into a spacecraft was well done, but wasn't anything we haven't seen before. My only beef with the trailer is it doesn't get the blood pumping, the adrenaline rushing. The Episode 1 teaser got all of our hearts pumping. It also gave too much away, so in effect the fact that this trailer is a real, honest to God, teaser might be a good thing. It did what it intended to do and that was show us the tone of the movie and give us a small taste of the bigger meal to come.

I, for one, am psyched about the movie. Sure, it could still suck, but the more I see and hear, the more my fears are alleviated. It isn't Lord of the Rings cool, but you have to remember that Star Wars was Lord of the Rings cool almost 25 years ago. Lord of the Rings has the whole angle of we're watching movie history unfold, that this film will be watched, the phenomenon surrounding this film studied, for many, many, many years to come. LOTR is pushing the limits of technology, of cleverness with effects and character by a young director and young, upstart effects guys. Um... Lucas and ILM anybody?

We haven't seen the definitive Lord of the Rings movie yet. We have seen the definitive Star Wars films. All in all, I just wish people would let these movies exist together without having to feel like allying with one of them. "Fellowship is going to kick Attack of the Clones' ass, man!" "No, Lucas is God! Lord of the Rings will suck!" We should be hoping for both of these films to be as good as they can be. After all, who wants to watch a shitty movie? Have a little hope, people. It looks like Lucas is taking Star Wars a bit more seriously this time out if the trailer is any indication.

    by barrowwight

I am more excited about LOTR than some dribble from my once favorite writer/director. Jar Jar put a seemingly trite, dampening feeling on my whole Star Wars infatuation and now I'm just as thrilled about Episode II as I am about scorpions crawling on me and stinging the whole of my body. Lightsabers are cool, but Midichlorians are an unjust insult to SW fans.

Allow me to elaborate on my theory...

    by leonard shelby

Star Wars sucks because it is a completely stolen story idea to start with. Star Wars sucks because the entire storyline is bookended by Phantom Menace and Return of the Jedi, two major pieces of shit. Star Wars sucks because Lucas insists on writing the piss poor dialogue. Star Wars sucks because it has turned into nothing but a marketing gimmick, and it has lured all you poor saps to go and see a little kids movie just to get your Star Wars fix.

...Leonard Shelby sucks because he's prejudging a movie's "value" to adults, based on the fact that it's animated, and was distributed by Disney, when in truth, it will probably be one of the top ten movies made this year, quality AND box-office wise, PERIOD.

I understand your criticism, I mean Phantom Menace pissed us all off, no matter how die hard Star Wars Junkies we are. You should go to theforce.net more often though. Lucas is releasing the trailer via online off the official web site on Monday. Also, it will be broadcast on almost every major news org. on Monday night as well. I feel your anger, and yes George is a shitty director period, but he gets lucky (A New Hope). Anyway, this film will not be a let down like everyone is expecting.

Just saw it, not too shabby

    by anghus

Just came back from the theater where some cinema buddies of mine screened the trailer for me. Let me first say that i am a casual fan at best. Ive seen every SW movie twice, once when it first came out, once during the special edition re-release, so my nipples dont get hard with anticipation like some people when the words "Star Wars" are uttered. They are good, fun films, nothing to fashion your life after. It was good. If there's one thing Lucasfilm is good at, it's generating a buzz. As much as i've been told that this film will be 'darker' and 'more adult', i still cant shake that lingering Phantom Menace doubt, i mean that trailer was bad ass too, but when you watch it again on DVD (the trailer) you cant help but feel bamboozled. Lets hope the same thing doesnt happen this time. I heard one person at the theater say "thank god its (the trailer) atatched to a good movie, last time i had to walk out once the trailer was over and wasted 6 bucks." If you pay 7 bucks (or more in larger cities) to watch this trailer, then do us all a favor: find a brick and smack yourself in the face. Im almost tempted to go to theater tonite and count the amount of people that walk out after the trailer is over. Im sure it wont be that many, since it is a Pixar film and not a sappy afterlife-romance concoction, but im sure there is some guy who will part with a fin and some change just to see this, and that scares me a little...

    very short

    by bokonon

The trailer looked good, but it is VERY short (hence, teaser trailer). It starts off as a blank screen with Darth Vader's breathing heard in the background. There is no dialog. It cuts to a montage of shots of Yoda, Obi Wan, Anakin (much older), etc. A couple light saber scenes, but all really short shots. Some music plays (very eerie music) so maybe it will be a darker-themed movie. Anyway, it was good, but really short. I have to agree w/the article: wait for this trailer online and for the real one in Harry Potter.

Get a load of the CGI Yoda...ILM has outdone themselves. Yes, it's very short, and it's not worth shelling out the cash just to catch its few seconds on the big screen, but if you're going to Monsters, Inc. anyway, it's definitely a bonus.

    by dortmunder

I was fooling around with LimeWire (file sharing program in the vein of Napster) and stumbled upon what appears to be a full-fledged trailer for AOTC (NOT the teaser trailer everyone's talking about). I have no way of knowing whether it's legit or not, but it sure looks it.

One thing I noted about this trailer is that there is a brief shot of Christopher Walken (wearing contacts to give his eyes an "alien" look), whose involvement in the film had supposedly been ruled out, no?

I've e-mailed Harry and Moriarty about this, in the hope they could find the file themselves and verify its authenticity, but I haven't heard from them yet.

If you use LimeWire, try doing a video search and see if you can't find the file I did.

    by jedigoalie

Why the fuck has it been pulled in some places? Monsters, INc. was worth the time, but not seeing the trailer and then having the idiot manager shrug as to why it was pulled really pissed me off! Anyone know why this happened? Is it specific chains?

    Reply to Talkback

  • Just saw it. Good thing I have fairly good command of my eyelids and was able to keep from blinking because I would have missed it.

Altogether, I believe that it was probably 45 to 60 seconds long, has 5 or 6 interesting wide shots (Boba Fett (or his Dad, whatever), Nice shot of thousands of clones boarding a ship, and some city surrounded by water.)

I too wait in anticipation for a beefier trailer in front of the drivel that will be Harry Potter.

In any case, see it if you're in San Francisco at the AMC 1000 on Van Ness on their digital projection room.

...And DO STAY FOR MONSTERS, INC.

It is really fun and funny and cute and I don't go for that shit ever.

I had fun and enjoyed beautiful, bright digital purity.

    Fanboy: A Definition

    by mikesal222

fan-boy (n): 1. A person who pays $9 to see a 30-second trailer of a movie that isn't going to be very good in the first place, and then runs out of the theater before the main feature even starts, unperturbed by the fact that Lucas is now a little richer, and they are a little more debased.

    by sparticusmaximus

The importance of this first trailer was to introduce the LOOK of the new film....and let me tell you (I swear no exageration)it's visuals made ESB look light hearted. The breathing and drumbeats really added to the ominous mood.....And I can't imagine any SW fan not loving that beautiful shot of Anakin and Obi-Wan, lightsabres blazing moving down an eerie corridor....it looked like something out of a horror film. And theres more to FUCKING come!!!! can anyone say YIPEE!!!!!!!

Just got back from seeing Monsters Inc. Very cool movie, amazing effects. Anyways, I was amazed to see that LOTR was also attached, WOW!!!! It looks so great up on the big screen and sounds great in THX. The Star Wars trailer was last...just breathing, very short, and didn't impress me in the least. Actually it makes me not want to go and see more. There is this one water scene...jesus christ, it looks so god damn fake it's insulting. Anyway, the lightsabers looked cool, Padme looks hot...but other than that Star Wars sucks a giant ass! LOTR will rule forever!!!!

    What is wrong with people?

    by quint

I saw the trailer twice today. The trailer isn't cut in the same pulse pounding, adrenaline pumping style as the Ep. 1 teaser was, but it instead acts as a real teaser. It's there to give us a small taste of what's to come. I like that there's no narration. No voice over saying, "These thingies you're looking at are clones and they're pissed off..." God help me, the CG Yoda looked better than the puppet used in Ep. 1. Jango looked cool. The army of clones was cool. Natalie Portman was hot, as usual. Ewan looked awesome, especially in that high tech Bacta tank lookin' thing, 3-PO and R2 looked great... I can't understand how those who bitched about Ep. 1 being too light and kiddie can bitch about this trailer. It's dark. Most of the shots in the trailer take place either at night or in some place dark. The HD looks fantastic. I was really worried the movie would look digital, but what they show us in the trailer is fantastic, crisp and clear. After seeing Life As a House, which confirmed that young Mr. Hayden can act, and this new trailer, I, for one, am truly excited to see Episode 2. It looks like Lucas learned from his mistakes from the last film... Of course this is just a trailer and a few select shots don't make a movie, but I like the visual style he adapted for Attack of the Clones. Like any of you care anyway, but them's my two cents.

    by rabid_republican

People calm down. Everytime I come on here to check on the progress of AOTC, I'm reminded of that recent Onion headline: "Two Movie Fanboys Argue Over Films That Haven't Come Out Yet". Now I'm gonna go out on a wild limb here and suggest George or at that the very least his little marketing toadies have listened to the feedback on TPM and adjusted AOTC accordingly. Personally, while I agree with the sentiment that Lucas is well past his prime, I have not lost face in his legend (I speak of the universe, not him as director or producer). Furthermore, I'm going to suggest that Lucas past his prime still has more to offer than most the trash pumped out by Hollywood these days. So for cryin' out loud, enough cynicism already!

In that time, Harry would have a link to the trailer on this page. But now we get a "I have not yet seen the ATTACK OF THE CLONES teaser that is supposed to be out on MONSTERS, INC. today." Uhmmm... someone like that calls himself "Head Geek"??? A "Head Geek" who hasn't seen the new Star Wars trailer yet?? Hello? Am I the only one who thinks this is a total contradiction??? Instead, Harry asks the fans to bring in the news that you would usually expect from this site.

    by mpg

Now that I had a chance to vent, here's my opinion about the trailer: I am going to keep it to myself. Am I the only one who thinks that it is totally useless to discuss a Star Wars trailer? In my opinion, the TPM trailers ruled. I watched them again from the DVD, and they are still great. The problem: They were much better than the movie. So at least I am not going to discuss any Star Wars trailers. In May, you'll get my opinion on AOTC (not that you give a damn about my opinion). ;) I just hope it's going to be a good opinion. But nothing about the trailers until then!

    The Teaser rocked!

    by pajamo12

I reminded me of TESB. The mood was so sinister. After the logo, complete darkness then Vader's breathing then one image, Natalie. The sound and image tells us all what this is about: a woman. Then a rush of images, a very cool CG Yoda, a concerned Mace Windu, an Obi-Wan in search of...something, an unpainted C-3PO also looking off the screen, RD-D2 looking right at us, a cool ship, kinda like a shaped like a horseshoe whizzing past some city. Hundreds of droid soldiers boarding a ship. An embrace, a kiss, darknesss, heavy precussion drowns out Vader's voice and then a sharp flash of two lightsabers one Red the other maybe Blue and then the title. For a teaser it's brilliant. I only hope the film comes through with it's promise a non-light-hearted affair. Oooh, the May 17 seems toooooo far away... (in a glaxay far far lol)

Good on you George, and yes all you people will come on and say but TPM was utter crap and a kids film... And I would agree mostly with it. But this is DARK, DARK, DARK. Its gorgeous and fantastic. Roll on MAY. I hope these forums get taken up with people slating this before its released, because I would like you to come back after seeing this and say the same. Looks like old George listened to a lot of you haters and has produced what looks like the DARKEST film so far in the Starwars series. George will have the last laugh after all, this is tremendous. It May only be a 30 second teaser but the visuals of it makes it look as if its something from a deep thinking Sci-Fi film. Oh And WATTO's hat is pure great, the best character from TPM is back with his hat. I must stop typing but this looks and has a feel to it that is sensational. Come on doubters, wait until Monday and download it and then see the 2 minute trailer on the 9th November and then come back and try to slate it. WE HAVE A CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That's a funny post, Basher...

    by eternal

I'm not a disgruntled "fanboy", or a Hollywood exec, and believe me, most Star Wars fans would like to "glorify" the saga once again, but if Ep2 sucks as bad as Ep1, then it deserves to be torn apart in just the same way. I do think that George has learned from his mistakes and will deliver the goods with this one - even he can't screw up to such an extent twice (can he?!). Still, there's no reason why Ep1 should have turned out the way it did, and if he'd used his head instead of his ass, no one would trash Star Wars at all. I hate TPM and always will. No matter how good Ep2 is, it will always have to suffer the indignity of following Ep1, and that pisses me off bigtime! Btw, you ruined what little credibility you had by stating that LOTR & HP are "crap" and "silly". Comments like those only show that you're a biased SW fanboy with not one iota of regard for any film other than what Luca$ shits out of his fat ass...

Hey, they ALL look cool to me! Why must it be one or the other? Why must you hate LOTR to love Star Wars, or vice versa? While I'm at it, why is Ep1 the 'worst movie ever made'? It's actually a lot better than most of its genre, it just didn't live up to the original trilogy. That doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Can't anybody just enjoy something for what it is? A large majority of you who are complaining probably bought the DVD! P.S. - Thanks to the cool dude who just posted pics from the trailer!

    It's a teaser alright

    by ru486

This teaser trailer follows the old showbiz rule to leave 'em wanting more. Portman looked hot. Yoda looked pissed. There were some quick shots of eye candy, and it was over. The Jango Fett shot was the one I want to see more of. Well it got ticket sales up for Monsters, Inc. and that may be the ultimate goal from all of this.

Can anyone help me on this question?

    by 1649

Does anybody know who the main bad guy will be for Episode II? It's not Maul (Of course), it's not Vader (of COURSE), it's not Palpatine (he's more subtle in his actions, not the fighting type). My guess is that it will be Jango Fett.
But try to take a look at the featurettes on the official website. You will see Obi-Wan fighting with air which must mean that he's duelling with a CGI-character! Spookiest of all: He gets his ass kicked!
So everybody, who do you think the big bad wolf will be?

The teaser will be available on starwars.com on Monday. They just want it with Monsters Inc exclusively for the first weekend to boost sales. As if Disney and Pixar aren't rich enough.

    NOT THE TEASER TRAILER

    by pishkapa

'k so this is really ticking me off 'cause I'm trying to download the teaser trailer from Morpheus and I keep coming up with the fan trailer that someone made about a year ago even though the file says -YES THIS IS REAL - OFFICIAL TRAILER.

I saw a post on here about someone saying they saw the same trailer and talking about it like it was real. THIS IS FAKE FOLKS!!! HELLO THE GUYS WITH THE LIGHTSABERS ARE WEARING KILTS - IT'S FROM BRAVEHEART!!!!!

I loved this trailer when it first came out because it was obviously the work of a fan but to believe this is real is ridiculous - it's like the argument I had with this guy three years ago about Spinal Tap being a real band. How can you not see that these are shots taken from other movies. If nothing else the shots of R2 and C3PO are obviously from the first trilogy.

This shouldn't bother me so much but if people don't start questioning what they see and hear on tv, then eventually we'll end up blindly backing a redneck president in his campaign bombing innocent people in some Middle Eastern country and not care because CNN will convince us that we're the good guys and the evil doers must pay.

But, of course, that will never happen.

The reason why we're all keen on this trailer is not because we think it might be great. It's because we are looking so damn much forward to the real movie. Personally I kinda get the shivers from just putting small bits of information on episode II together in my head. Well, maybe it's because I'm a bit freaky but I guess that most ultra-fans are. It's all about expectations!

I don't know about the rest of you nutballs, but I am looking forward to EP2. I am also looking forward to Potter and LOTR. I hope that every damn movie I see between now and EP2 rocks. Why do you people want movies to be bad? Why would you wish for something to be bad to make something else look better? That doesn't make any damn sense! All you dumb bastards who are saying LOTR is gonna be so good that EP2 is gonna suck comparativly, why wouldn't you want both movies to be excellent? Do you enjoy going to see bad movies? For the love of God people, just be a little freeking optimistic will ya? Sour puss chumps. Also I need to address the moron above who said something like: "how good can the CGI Yoda be if you can tell it's CGI and not the puppet?" Are there realy people this goddamn stupid in the world? Who dresses and feeds this drooling idiot? Doe's he honestly think that ILM tried to make the CGI Yoda look like the puppet? No matter how great a puppet looks you are still gonna know its a fucking puppet. Why would they want to make the CGI look like the puppet, when they can just use the puppet if they want too? Same goes for CGI. You are gonna be able to tell Yoda is CGI because...oh yea, aliens like Yoda don't exist in real life, so if it isn't a puppet it couldn't be anything other than CGI, now could it? I am so sick of people saying that stuff looks fake in Star Wars movies. For Christ's sake your looking at stuff that doesn't, and never will exist in the real world. What does the Yoda look like in real life? What the fuck are you comparing it too? Boy the real Yoda sure looks better than those puppet and CGI versions! George Lucas sucks!

Until you start presenting some evidence, and not just an opinion which you label as "FACT" and expect everyone to believe, I'm going to continue to believe the evidence that LOTR is highly anticipated. Go into a book store and you'll see dozens of different copies of Fellowship of the Ring covering an entire table! It is one of the highest selling series of all time, my friend, and those numbers aren't faked. In fact, it is second in sales only to the Bible. Like I said, you're in denial, and that's a FACT backed by evidence.

heres my story: i saw monsters inc. just now, and im happy because it was fun and really creative. also, the clones trailer was fun.
(remember the word "fun"). so i venture back home to my computer to my fav site to be utterly appalled at (some) of the so-called fanboys who actually bicker and debate innane and mundane points. stop being silly and admit the fact that we grew up with star wars and that franchise is what spawned things like this web site and our love for movies and the fantastical. so the phantom menace wasnt all that and all of a sudden lucas is deemed "fat" and a "rich bastard". you know what ? "LUCAS DOESNT OWE US JACK SHIT. he has already given us utter happiness in the original trilogy and some of you have the audacity to criticize him because of jar jar? because jake lloyd couldnt act? GET OVER IT. i was let down a little bit by TPM but it was great to see a new star wars chapter on the big screen, and you know it. i applaud lucas for trying his hand on his beloved franchise. he is having "fun" doing them. and star was is about the audience having "fun". i would rather watch jar-jar say stupid things if it meant feeling like a kid again. star wars is his gig, not yours and mine. stop acting selfish especially when you KNOW you will be in line with me for episode two. i think we all forget that we are older and more mature (some of us) since the days of the original trilogy. imagine if it were reversed and we grew up on episode 1,2, and 3. would we mock the title "the empire strikes back" ? would a giant slug called jabba sound childish? REMEMBER THE CORE IDEA OF WHY PEOPLE LIKE US EVEN VISIT THIS SITE AND WHY WE LOVE FILM...and stop being so selfish...you should feel lucky we even have an episode 2 to discuss...
    alright...

    Re: That fan-made trailer...

    by fitzy funk

I've seen it, and it has been out for awhile. I believe Christopher Walken's shot is from Sleepy Hollow and NOT from The Prophecy 3 or whatever. And Hayden's shots come from that television show he starred in called Higher Ground, or something like that. Someone needs to verify that, because like Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, "I don't watch tv." As for the REAL teaser trailer, it was short, composed mainly of quick shots, and didn't explain much of anything. In other words, it was a perfect TEASER. To make any judgment on the finished film by this trailer would be absolutely idiotic (esp. knowing how cunning those Lucasfilm marketers are), so I'm just going to end here.

Well..I was just checking out all the film websites seeing if the new Teaser was online. To my dismay I saw zip...so with a little revulsion I decided to check out this talk back....I avoid ain it cool whenever I can. I think the talkbacks are filled with talentless hacks who have nothing else better to do that be little cynical boys and girls. I mean I've seen films that I thought were complete ass....like Battlefield Earth...but most of the time I just keep my mouth shut. Let me get to the point. George Lucas has more talent in his pinky finger than any of you wannabe film critic/makers basement bedrooms at your mothers house. Did I like Phantom Menace..hell yeah...did I think it was the greatest film ever made...hell no..but I admire the work. It takes a lot of balls to take a man's film and edit it so you can enjoy it more...(yes this goes out to the Phantom Editor...why don't you make your own damn movie then fuck with other peoples work). And yes I do like all of Lucas' films...I think he makes great stuff...so does Coppola, Speilburg Kubrick...all of them...see I love film..I love going to the theater and enjoying a movie. Even shitty films I enjoy. Why because it is an art form. I hope Lucas makes a mock Episode III and just has ever character look like Jar Jar just to piss you guys off. It's funny to see you guys talk shit to each other knowing that in real life you guys would just cower like pansies...I mean grow up and get some dignity will you..and stop watching movies too..because you fuckers kill the whole reason that films exist in the first place...ENTERTAINMENT.
Stop jerking off to the Hot Topic Catalog and go out and make something ...a film ....but knowing you jagoffs it will probably be a Evil Dead ripoff. better yet...I can see you guys taking the Spider-Man DVD and editing the WTC attack in there so it would have some continuity. Fuck this place..I'm going back to C.H.U.D. this place is full of squares.

  • And that is a mighty fine thing to say for a trailer. It has some fantastic imagery, Yoda is animated so well you may not even realize he's done that way, and the tone is nice and creepy. It's not worth buying the entire ticket for (though Monster's Inc. is), but it is worth seeing. We've become a second-hand movie society, and I promise you that you will not see a proper science fiction movie on this scale for quite some time to come, because very few people have the balls, the patience, and the love of the art to pull this kind of filmmaking off, and unfortunately these aren't the people who are given movies to make.

    by ewem

Virtually everyone agrees that those TPM trailers were amazing! With Williams's music playing and the fast paced of the cues...those trailers really were better than the movie itself.
It's going to be interesting to see if that's the case here. This is just the first teaser. Wait until a few more months when the next trailer comes.

You see Jango Fett flying, Legions of i think Stormtroopers marching into ships, probably abunch of young clones in front of some computer screens, Mace Windo, ObiWan & Anakin with Lightsabers drawn, a Silver 3PO, And some other stuff but it was to fast. But you did see Natalie Portman, and believe me, i'm still seeing her!! Anyway, the 1st teaser trailer was wwwwaaaaaayyyyy better, this one just makes the true fans excited. I am so sick of all you idiots out there who try and build a life around attacking Episode 1 !
It was a very good movie. Flawed- like every film is- but no where near the garbage a lot of you make it out to be. So maybe it wasn't what you wanted- it wasn't your film! It was George Lucas'! And I think a lot of you attack it because you're afraid to admit you liked it. "Ohhh! What would all the others think if I didn't agree with them? If I didn't attack Episode 1? If I dared to have an original thought different than theirs?" Then you put on your Jar Jar Binks jammies and go to bed like the children you are. And dream about whatever movie the "cool guys" say is going to be great while they bash everything else. There is room for a lot of good movies out there- whether you're interested in them or not. So leave be! And May the Force be with you.

    George's Genius

    by stevesabol

I find it amazing that George Lucas can take such a talented cast (Sam Jackson, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, and Wean McGregor) and make them just... so... awfully bad.

I saw E1 in the the theater and I was definitely blown away by the world Lucas creates. He's a master and imagining and realize a complete and total reality. But come on... he makes James Cameron look like a dialog genius!

A friend bought the DVD... it was painful... absolutely painful. I read an interview with Ewan and he said in order to become a jedi he and Liam decided all they had to do was furrow their brow and look down. And poor poor Natalie. The boredom just drips off her performance.

And Sam. I forgave you for Shaft because you were just too damn cool in it. But Quinten isn't writing this script. There's no AND YOU WILL KNOW MY NAME IS THE LORD in this script.

I go back and watch the old Star Wars and I don't feel like the kid watching it anymore. I've grown up and my tastes are a litle more sophisticated (but not by much). When Luke bleats "but Uncle Owen... I wanted to go to Star Force Academy" or whatever he says it's just horrible little brat whine.

I guess I don't understand. I want to have the same reverance as you guys do. I want to be amazed. But... Lucas is just such a horrible director. How do you get past that?

Peace between Star Wars and LOTR?

    by mpg

Ok, it seems that in every Star Wars talkback, there are some Star Wars fans who bash LOTR, and some LOTR fans who bash Star Wars. The same goes for every LOTR talkback. Am I the only one who noticed that?? There are some people here with common sense, who have repeatedly said that they would want all of these movies to be great. How does it hurt anyone if all of these are great? I think that the LOTR bashers are just Star Wars fans who are bitter, because TPM may not have turned out the way they expected, and the Star Wars bashers are LOTR fans who are insecure about the success of LOTR. I know, I may be wasting my breath here, but can't we at least attempt to show that common sense still prevails in these talkbacks at least _sometimes_?? Can't we just kick these notorious SW/LOTR bashers into their virtual balls and tell them to fuck off as soon as we see one of their brainless posts? No, I don't care if people compare LOTR with Star Wars or attempt to describe which one is going to be better. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I just hate those fucking morons who just blindly bash one of these movie series without any proper arguments at all, as in, "Movie A is going to suck like hell, because it is not movie B!!!" Sorry for having to vent, but this is really slowly starting to piss me off. I don't expect intelligent conversations from AICN talkbacks, but some level of intelligence should be expected from someone who is able to use a computer and post a message here.

swabbing the blood away from my clown suit...

    by andrew

ok...let me see if this makes sense...i'm like this clown that does gigs at birthday parties for little kids, right...and i figure i have time to finish this party i'm at and hit the road to catch the infamous EPII teaser on Monsters, Inc.

So i wrap up the funbags with ease and hop in my car. i start changing while driving down the road because i'm meeting a group of friends there and so...yes.

anyways, i get to the end of the street, and realize there's a little kid from the party in the backseat of my car, because i throw my suit over my head and hear a juvenile giggle when it lands on his head.

Thinking it was a child deliquient up to no fun, i frantically turn around, allowing my foot to slam on the brakes, which causes the unknown body covered in clowness to slam the back of my seat, and begin profusely beating its head with my fist. The laughter turns to cries, which turns to screeching, which turns to silence. i then, step out of the car and open my trunk, which carries my party accesories along with other essential items in traveling. in this case it was a speared shovel. i open the backseat and jab the shovel into the motionless body, causing the excessive suit and several layers of skin to wrap around the rustic metal. I pull the body out and continue beating the head into the thick asphault until it appears safe for me.

to make a long story short, i ended up missing the damn teaser because i had to drive the dead body back to the party and explain to the parents why their son ruined my highly anticipated evening. Damn them...

    maybe i'll see it tomorrow.

    by von bastard

I have not seen it yet, I will tomarrow. But, why are we freaking out already! How can we tell if Yoda is CG from a few frames? Well, I will tell you, he moves, a lot more. You can tell that Yodas movement has been freed up and he can react more naturally. I for one am not going to freak about an all cg yoda. The one shot in Phantom was done great, and they will only improve on that.

Let's all have a good time with these, how often do we get like 4 huge series at once: Star Wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, Matrix. It boggles the mind. We are lucky. Stoppind shitting on things that you all jerk off to at night. It's like beating yourself up. If you told me ten years ago we would have 3 lotr picts coming out in the middle of the star wars rebirth I would have lost my mind.

Okay, just for fun, I'll do something I've never done before, and that is bash Star Wars a little. Howaboutthis? Lucas might actually be Boss Nass. Big butt, fat face, sits on his throne, and does not carrrrrre (shack jowels and slobber). His son could be Jar Jar (who DID name the fool, after all). But in the end, it's not Anakin, Obi-Wan or even Amidala who gets credit, but the big fat producer who just signed his warrior's paychecks. Did we actually SEE Boss Noss in the battle? At all? It's Lucas directing his movies. He does not carrrrrre (more slobber) about the fans, he nosathinkso. Da dink day all so bombad. Buy your teekit and begone! I could go on, but it's not really fair. Lucas is one of my favorite artists, yes, ARTIST, and while TPM may not have lived up to our hopes (and the hype), it wasn't that bad. After all the great memories Lucas has given us, let's give him another chance (or two), okay? Now I'll do another taboo, and bring up the true star wars, Potter, Rings, Jedis, Agents, etc. They ALL rock! Potter will be magical and fun, and LOTR is solid because we know it's story is solid. Now, I'm looking around here, and I realized that I have a foot-tall Obi-Wan statue on my desk, and a Battle Droid sitting on my monitor, but I have NO Tolkien stuff anywhere. And yet I still say that LOTR will be better, not because Star Wars is lacking anything, but because Tolkien is just that damn powerful! Now, before anybody wants to blast me in Talkback, consider this--three years ago, we knew LOTR was being made BEFORE we saw TPM. How many die-hard Starwoids would have said Phantom Menace would be superior then? Probably most of them. Well, guess what, you ate crow! Do NOT judge a movie before it's released. Have hope, be objective, even be critical (it keeps the film-makers in check), but for Gods'-Yoda's-Gandalf's-Foghorn Leghorn's sake can we just enjoy the feast of films that is coming? And if anybody wants to challenge me on this, go ahead and post your silly Talkbacks, but I've got a better challenge--how about we let MST3K watch Clones, Potter and Fellowship and see which one they can make the most fun of? Now THAT would make for impartial judging. Now something to stir up the zealots--"May the Ring be with you", and "May there be one Force to rule them all".

    Attack of the Clones

    by alexanderdelarge

I just saw the ATTACK OF THE CLONES trailer, and I must say that in my opinion, those thirty seconds of images were by far more interesting than the rather underwhelming glimpses we've had at LOTR so far. Why do I feel the need to share this with you? well, we're all geeks aren't we? the point of talkback is to bicker about movies we've not seen yet and predict which one will be good or which one will be shit, generally choosing wrongly, by the way. It's all about taking sides. But after all of this stupid nonesense I have one thing to say : I think Lucas is a genius and he has outdone himself (at least visually) with what I've seen of Episode II. And Peter "Frighteners" Jackson be damned, he's an interesting filmmaker but I have little interest in watching his epic, especially now that they seem to have gotten big heads about it.

    Peter Jackson...

    by herbchambers

...a young director? Not quite-- at age 40 with several major hollywood projects behind him I don't think we can call Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson a visionary new filmmaker on par with Lucas (at the time he made "Star Wars"). Don't get me wrong though, I'm a fan of Jackson's work-- especially "Heavenly Creatures" and "The Frighteners." But to compare LOTR in legacy to "Star Wars" is, at the least, premature. Granted I do not know much about LOTR, I have not read the books, and haven't been following the production-- I'll see it when it comes out, but I'm a thousand times more ready for "Attack of the Clones," despite the whole Episode I mess.

    Lucas is a genius?

    by mpg

Uh... ok... let's watch TPM again... let's just take one scene... Anakin and Qui Gon are running to Amidala's spaceship, as they encounter Darth Maul. Anyone with an IQ high enough to peel a banana wonders, "Hey! Why are they running??" This is the work of a genius? Nope, it's the work of someone who doesn't give a damn about story flow. Watch the TPM DVD, and you will find the scene that explains why they were running. It doesn't make sense without that scene, but for some reason, Lucas decided to not include the 10 seconds. Just one of many many many examples in TPM. Lucas WAS a genius. Star Wars:ANH was the work of a genius, Empire Strikes Back was the work of a genius. Return of the Jedi was the work of someone who has noticed that his movies are actually worth more on the merchandising market than on the big screen. TPM was made by someone who has a great story on his hands, but who wastes it's potential and creates an "entertaining" movie, when it could have been magnificient! Lucas should produce these movies, but he shouldn't do the screenwriting, and he shouldn't direct ("Action", "Faster", "More intense" - he even jokes about his own ineptitude). I WISH he will find his genius again for AOTC. I truly WISH! Because if AOTC is going to suck, Lucas doesn't even have to start with Ep3. Star Wars is the greatest movie series of the 20th century. I'd hate to see it go down the drain in the 21st.
---------------------- Having said that, nobody is trying to steal any of Star Wars' greatness for LOTR. Like I said, that can only come from someone who is still bitter about TPM's failure. But if you want to talk about greatness: LOTR was great before Star Wars even existed.
------------------------ And to Mercier. I'll try to talk on your level: How wude! Yousa in big dudu! Ouchtime! (yes, these are quotes from a movie made by a "genius").

    trailer all over??

    by mpg

Nope, the trailer that is "all over" is the fan made trailer. I actually find it extremely amusing that there are some Star Wars fans who are so brainwashed that they would look at a fan made trailer with some really silly stuff (and some stuff from TPM and other movies) without recognizing it. Some people are so sure that AOTC WILL be great that they have lost their ability to look at anything that even smells like AOTC with any kind of objectivity. That is sad, really sad.

I like it. It's simple and subtle with absolutely no Jar-Jar in sight! The breathing sounds of Darth Vader's respirator sent a chill down my spine. I think any true fan of the series will be satisfied with what appeared on screens across America today. Also, I like the fact that we finally get to see a bounty hunter use that cool looking rocket powered jetpack without falling into a pit containing a giant man-eating monstrosity. age 6, star wars came out, loved it. age 11, jedi came out, loved it, but star wars was over indefinitely. age 12, started reading THE HOBBIT and then THE LORD OF THE RINGS....worshipped it. Early 20s, Star Wars comes back in style via comics and novels....awesome. Special Editons do great....kick ass. LORD OF THE RINGS movies announced...initial skepticism replaced by real belief these will be great and do justice to the books. Age 30...anxiously awaiting both, and not hedging one against the other. Analysis....there's room in my life for BOTH. And lest we forget, Lucas read LORD OF THE RINGS as "source material", and I think that P. Jackson would probably call himself a star wars fan and certainly acknoweledge the place of star wars in the history of cinema, up to and including the fact that their success made LOTR possible. Suggestion for everyone else: go see the movies (SW and LOTR), read the books (SW and LOTR), but shut the fuck up. thank you.

What a great time to be alive

    by lugnut

What a great time to be alive for movie buffs. Wow! Or to be more precise - WOW!! Simply put, the Episode II tease was chilling. It left me breathless. I literally didn't breathe for the entirety of the tease. Understand that I am a huge fan of the series, but am not a fanboy. Big distinction there. Having said that, I loved this tease. I loved the look. I loved the tone. I loved the stripped-down simplicity of it all - just images and that Darth hiss. And wow, those images! That's what left me breathless. I mean, Christ! We're seeing new views of the SW universe up there on a movie screen! Historic and beautiful and chilling to witness! There's been so much written over the last 3 years about the return of the SW universe to theaters near us all. The 16-year absence. The continuation of a real dynasty. The legion of diehards worldwide, and the multiplying number of young fans. We read any little scrap of news with the greatest anticipation, and then we finally got to see those incredible trailers for Ep. I. You know where you were when you first saw the words, "Every generation has a legend." You remember the crowd cheering the sight of the Lucasfilm logo. And you remember the sheer awe of seeing brand-new SW sights up there on the screen. And then another trailer. And another. The months, and weeks, and days leading up to that joyous moment when you got to tell the kid in the box office, "Yes. One for The Phantom Menace, please." And here we are again, baby! I'll admit my excitement hasn't been all there the past year. May 2002 meant Spider-Man to me, not Clones. But as we're drawing closer, I am getting seriously stoked. How fun is this! We're down to the final months, and we're treated to never-before-seen images and sounds. The whole country will be counting down somehow, whether it's in Taco Bell commercials, or on The Today Show tidbits, or in Entertainment Weekly articles. We get to be kids again, waiting for that Christmas in May when we get to finally unwrap the new installment. Under it all, there's a shred of disappointment, realizing that all of this cannot last. We've loved SW for 24 years now, but in 4 years we will have seen the last of the saga. No more new stuff. I mean, how great is it to indulge the fantasy of Lucas mustering the time and energy to carry out his initial vision of 9 episodes?? No, we'll get this anticipation for 7 months now, and again in a couple years. Then it will all be over. The story will be told, and the film cycle will be complete. But it's been fantastic while it's lasted. What a great time to be alive for movie buffs, to witness this excitement first hand!

I believe you had the following to say: "Some movies have to be crap. That's how we know when we've seen a good movie." Sadly you are correct in this, and it's a shame that bad movies are made...but it's an even BIGGER shame that you actually WISH and HOPE for movies to suck. Your so insecure in your love of Star Wars (a franchise I love myself) that you feel the need to prop up your fragile ego by calling certain movies "shit". Movies that should by all means be awsome. If LOTR is a great movie then it's a great movie, and no matter how good or bad AOTC is, it won't change that - and vise versa. If you want to see a bad movie so you have some basis of comparison, go see something like Corky Romano. Oh, and dumbass, who the hell cares about download records? For god sake there's about 500 million people worldwide that have web service now that didn't back in 1999 when TPM was released you dumbshit, of course the record is gonna fall.

    It's Not The Same...

    by jollydwarf

The real life 'clones' out there seem to be...trepidacious. And with good reason. But I saw the teaser a few hours ago, and I must say that there was something disturbing about it. It really looks like Lucas wants to convey a strong degree of bleakness and impending doom in this film. Which is good and necessary, I think. I have no way of knowing how good or bad the film will be, but if it fails, it will be for reasons different from those in Episode I. The shot that resonates with me the most is the one with Obi Wan seemingly unconscious, floating in that energy sphere. It just says "Shit is gonna go down here." No matter what, it was over waaaay too soon. Incidentally, the "E.T." trailer shows the guns changed to walkie-talkies, and I didn't think that "Monsters, Inc." was 'all that'. Impressive, but not particularly inspired. It wasn't smart enough to be a film for "grown-ups" in disguise, and it wasn't frivolous enough for small children. Hmmm...nevertheless, the trailers AND the movie are worth the full admission price. But not one or the other. Diamondbacks in seven. Yeah, right!

I loved the teaser too... but STAR WARS has been around the minds of the pop culture generation a bit more than LORD OF THE RINGS recently. FELLOWSHIP may never wrestle the crown away from STAR WARS but I highly doubt that was ever the plan anyway. I think everyone is just happy to see a faithful adaptation of a classic story hit the big screen. This is a big deal for them, maybe not for you... but it is for them. I don't think LOTR can ever top the Lucas franchise in terms of bottom line profits and fanboy popularity... but I do know that Tolkein readers of all ages will be out in full force on December 19.

Oh..... but this teaser did more than that....It gave the audience the first indication of AOTC's unique FEEL: An Ominous sense of DREAD....That would be the best way to describe it. The TPM teaser did not evoke this. ....We had humour with Jar Jar's hijinks, little Anakin piloting a ship, a fun looking pod race, etc..... We all like to think that we matter. We would like to think we all matter, on a individual basis, to a man who we'll never know. We would like to think, that the anonymity of the internet makes us some kind of superhero, who can battle for right behind some kind of mask, or the perfect juvie delinquent, able to wreak havoc without consequence on the uncool. We've heard from the media the power of internet buzz, and told ourselves that we as a group will matter. But if the studios can treat all the millions of other people with callous disregard for so much of their experience, why is ours essential? The likelihood is, there will be both distinct and common audiences for the upcoming fantasy films, which we need not name. And these audience will be huge. Why? Because at some point, some author, whether it was Lucas, Tolkien, or Rowling decided they were going to give the audiences out there an immensely detailed set of worlds that the author would do their damnedest to make real for their arrival, worlds to which they could escape to because they could immerse themselves in there. Some films, some people can get along without it, or pretend they can, but the majority of the people out there are looking for somebody to provide them with legitimate, unforced ways of expanding their world for a while. As for us, we are merely another part of the audience, and we will only factor in if we buy a ticket, or somewhere down the line follow in the footsteps of those who have told these good stories.

The Styler has been reading talkbacks for two years without actually taking part but this idiot Mercier has brought JT Styler out to kick several shades of ass. I'm calling you out Mercier. To be frank Mercier, just what is your problem? Firstly, it seems to me that you are all over these LOTR/ Star Wars talkback due to your extreme lack of anything approaching a life. Do you have nothing better to do than to bash LOTR? Can your feeble mind not handle anything more than one movie at the same time. The Styler hopes and expects that both AOTC and LOTR unleash the monkey upon the worthless cine-ignorant masses of society but to perpetually slag of Lord of The Rings only tells me that you have obviously no idea of what it is to be : A fan. If you did, you would engage in constructive criticism and not full scale battle. The JT for one was not impressed by TPM but have faith that AOTC will not suck. Will LOTR outgross TPM? No. Will it be better than AOTC? Based on TPM, I'd have to say yes. However this is an opinion and if you are a man, you will heed the warning of the Styler and you will back the fuck up before you get smacked the fuck up. PS. An intelligent debate is something you should try some time because at the moment you said like a annoying little twat who deserves the wroth of the Styler.

Since the release of TPM the opening of megaplexes (theatres with 16 or more screens) has taken off. Most megaplexes have 3 or 4 auditorioums playing the big movie of the weekend guaranteeing anyone who wants to see it can. So do you think Lucas will pull the same stunt as last time and only allow theatres to have 2 copies of the movie so it sells out every show opening weekend?

basherkills - a master of kindergarten logic

    by mpg

Ok, just read the following quote, but be careful, if you have any sense of logic, it will make your brain hurt: "The point I am making is that anyone with half a brain can deduce that LOTR is crap without even seeing the movie. This stems from the fact that there is a terrific effort to push the thing by comparing it to SW - SW being the benchmark by which all movies of this kind must be measured." ------------------------------ Ok, first of all, there isn't a terrific effort to push the movie by comparing it to SW. It's us fans who are doing it. Not the studio execs. A few actors have said it will be bigger than SW, but that's hardly a "big push". Someone obviously has quite a warped view of the outside world. Second, let's have a look at this logic(?) again. So if you try to compare the new movie X to Star Wars, it _automatically_ means that movie X sucks? Ladies and Gentleman, yes, that is what basherkills is saying. He even claims that anyone with half a brain can deduce that. I can even agree, but we have to say that _only_ people with half a brain can come to such a conclusion. If the press ever picks up on people like that as being the typical Star Wars fans, I will burn my Star Wars collection (and trust me, it would be a large fire).
--------------------------------- But my favorite is from TheEnigma: "Yes that is right, I do not fine Hobbits cool. Sorry, just not down with little furry footed dudes."
I truly hope that it's sarcasm or otherwise it's a proof that most Star Wars fans tend to forget the Ewoks (Freud would have something to say about that). My web recommendation for today: "http://www.digiserve.com/eescape/closet/silly/50-Reasons-Jedi-Sucks.html". Enjoy. Like I said, A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back were the work of a genius, but ROTJ was already on the path down to TPM. -------------------------------- Having said that, AOTC has a good chance to be better than ROTJ and TPM, and I hope that Lucas takes that chance. But TPM also had a good chance to be better than ROTJ, but Lucas wasted that one, so I'm sorry if I try very hard to be pessimistic, so I can be pleasantly surprised in May. Yes, the teaser was great (there, I said it!), but the teasers and trailers for TPM were great too.

"Now, common sense dictates therefore that any report of LOTR having downloaded more trailers obviously comes from nervous producers, because there is NO WAY that it's true." ----This is probably the most ignorant and stupid fucking thing I've ever seen asserted on these Talkbacks - and that's saying a lot. Basher: The reason LOTR holds the record for tailer downloads over TPM is that there are more people on the 'Net now than there were when the EP1 trailer was first released. By the same token, the EP2 trailer will break the record currently held by LOTR. It's simple fucking elementary school math. The bottom line is that there are an enormous number of LOTR fans online who have huge anticipation for this movie. LOTR will NOT make more money than Star Wars. But it will make huge money, and it could easily - without breaking much of a sweat - be better in quality than anything George shits out between 1999 and 2005. And this is from someone who desperately wants the next 2 Star Wars to be great. Get your head out of your ass, and quit looking for the black helicopters.

This is a perfect teaser trailer which many of you seem to wish for. I mean, you get some really cool shots without it telling you the whole movie...just a taste. I really enjoy the sinister feel. Just Darth Vader's breathing, drumbeats, and NO DIALOGUE. This, for me, really harken back to the days of the ESB trailer, the one that ended with Darth Vader's head looming in the starscape with only his heavy breathing fading slowly to an echo in the background. I've had a few nightmares about that trailer when I first saw it. Good Job,Lucas, may the movie live up ro this.

The edge goes to LOTR, but it will probably suck too

    by muldrow

Looks like Lucas attended the Fincher school of directing over the summer. Boys and girls, just because the images are highly contrasted does not mean this is going to be a dark film. Fight club was an abomination, a laughable joke of an atrocious film which wanted to be so much better than it was. Look how that was shot? If Lucas wants to make AOTC dark, he should concentrate on the performances and subject manner, not the fricking CGI and the new digitial projector. Who gives a flying Lewinsky, about all that crap? I will laugh when Yoda wields a lightsaber. Episode II: When Muppets Attack. Lucas, stop the insanity! And for christsakes, does everyone in the Star Wars universe have to be related? In a galaxy far, far away...much like the state of Mississippi! If Boba Fett is even related to Anakin I am going to go apeshit. Stop the inbreeding! My camouflage is perfect. I am Muldrow.

    Geekier Than Thou....(Wampa Won)

    by tensticks

Taking a cue from something another talkbacker said, I'm just thinking what a great time it is to be a geek....in the next few years we have 2 Star Wars movies, 3 Lord of the Rings movies, an ElfQuest movie, more X-men, a new Battlestar Galactica, a new Babylon 5 movie, a watchable Star Trek series and by all accounts a worthy Star Trek movie in the pipeline, and rumours of new projects from the worlds of Rocky Horror, Dr Who, Evil Dead and Twin Peaks (plus new albums from Rush and Roger Waters!), and lots of cool DVDs. Wondrous!****But what amazes me most is that rather than be grateful for this bountiful geekfest that will be laid before us....is that people can still post their angry pseudo-intellectual fan boy ranting holier- and hipper- than thou critic shite and expect anyone to take it seriously....someone should make movie about THAT. Oh wait...JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK viciously and accurately skewered forums like this...so how can you all do it now with a straight face???

I don't see why everybody has to agrue over which will be the better film or why most people feel that if one of them is great the other has to completely suck. I'm not worried about whether AOTC or LOTR is better. I am much more worried that they will both suck because if they do then I have gotten myself excited these past years over nuthin. I am calmed however by the interviews with Christopher Lee, who as SW fans know is Count Dokuu(sp?) and LOTR geeks know is Saruman(sp?). In the ones I have read Lee says that LOTR is truly cinematic history in the making and will be the biggest/one of the best films of all time. But then again Lee is a huge LOTR nut. If only he'd calm my nerves over AOTC, then I'd be happy as a pig in shit. Either way I am a life long fan of both sagas. Here's hopin that if we argue after AOTC is out over which was the better film it is because they were both kick ass!

    Trailer Park

    by cajun lightning

Someone in an earlier post brought up the trailer for Empire Strikes Back. As a wee young one who fell in love with the first three films on video rather than in the theater, that would be very interesting to see. I think there should be a DVD of nothing but original trailers from landmark films, or at least a special on the Discovery Channel devoted to such things. If our culture has gotten to the point that we review previews, then I think there would be some interest besides my own in a project like that. In the meantime, the original trilogy on DVD with cool extras would be nice. Including the Star Wars Christmas special on there somewhere, or at least the show stopper What Do You Get A Wookie For Christmas When He Alreay Has A Comb?

How come most of you aren't talking about the trailer???

    by jeff batt

This site's supposed to be about the SW trailer. I would have like to hear more people talking about it. I haven't seen it yet because I'm taking my nieces to see it next week. Of course, I'll be able to see it on Monday without having to go see Monsters Inc. And all you people who think that the LOTR tralier is better, well, I don't see the big deal with that one. Maybe once I see that tralier on the big screen I'll think differently. I also think that most of you are crazy about thinking LOTR will make more money than Star Wars. True, 50 million people have bought the books but it came out 50 years ago and people who bought it the 1st time around are in their 60's and 70's. Beleive me, they won't be in line opening night. Plus, this movie is way too dark and hard to follow for young kids who would have to show up over and over again to approach any of the SW movies. It's just not gonna happen. Beleive me, I'm going to see all the SW movies and all the LOTR movies but LOTR just doesn't have the kind of broad interest SW does. The characters aren't funny or particularly interesting (OK, I guess short people with hairy feet are kind of interesting) plus, everyone already knows the story where as with SW, we're just guessing. And as for SW not being origial, well every writer in the world has been influenced by other writers but the world that Lucas created is just as original as Tolkien's, if not more so. LOFTR will make about $200 to $250 million each but will not approach SW numbers.

the teaser, LOTR, and all that shite

    by kneelbeforezod

First off, Monsters Inc. is a great movie. I loved it more than Toy Story & Bug's Life, but nothing can surpass Toy Story 2.

The trailer... simply amazing. My only complaint is that people were still filing into the theatre i was in, and the lights were still on. Some of the darkness was thus negated, but i still got the gist of it all. Basically, this reassured my faith in the tone of the movie. This is not light hearted by any stretch of the imagination. This is the direction that the saga needs to go, and Lucas is taking the proper steps. CGI Yoda just looks slightly different, not bad. It will look better than a puppet in the final analysis. All the other shots, frickin amazing. We're in for quite a ride my friends.

LOTR... well to be honest I am not in any way, shape, or form interested in seeing this. I have nothing against it, but it simply does not appeal to me. But I can tell you my opinion on your opinions is this: i think that those praising this film to the high heavens must realize that ist is going to be huge among this, the i-still-live-in-the-basement fanboy community. outside of us talkback posters, how huge will this film be? The thing about star wars is that it is accessible, and it is a core element of our pop culture. It has invaded our very national consciousness! LOTR is not exactly accessible to the kiddies, and just doesn't seem as interesting the general populace. It may be an extremely high-selling series, but how long has it been out to sell that many copies?!?! also, i believe someone mentioned how popular it must be because of all the "fellowship" books he sees on the shelves... well not to be picky but they ain't sellin that well if they're still on the shelves!

    All right, i'm done.

    by jdravnos

Come on Basher. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean that when others disagree with you they are lieing. I mean I can't stand boy bands, but unless the N'Sync manager cloned thousands of young girls to fill seats, it's rather popular. Everyone I've talked to loves the trailers for the LOTR. Now AotC will do well, and I honestly can't guess which outsell the other, but LotR's will do good buisness. About half my friends grew up reading the novels, and even though you think them long and boring, most people really enjoyed them. But then again I'm sure you think I'm some producer trying to sabatage Episode 2.

    by bregalad_

morGoth is right (again). Anyone remember the true talent we used to see in the TB? There was the snarky "LaneMyers" and of course the supreme snark "Eternal"; but at the top of his game, the funniest absurdist of all "Pisso the Clown." Ah, how fondly I recall the golden showers he would send upon us all. I laughed until my diaphragm was up to my larynx. Nowadays we have ill-conceived dreck like "Mercier" (who doesn't know anyone that read LOTR because no one in his trailer park can indeed read). ----- HO HUM ----- Yeah, I'm Old School, so Harry, bring back the good trollers of yesteryear!

    What a country...

    by jlf175

Where we can sit here and talk about this sorta stuff thanks to others protecting us in distant countries. Go Army..

With that said.. I am admittedly a fan of Phantom Menace. Was it great high art. No.. neither were the other star wars movies. It's an entertaining series though.

Personally, I think that there are two things that are important to my understanding of Ep1 and then why I like it.

First, it's an introduction of characters and people and places similar to how plays set up the story. Was it a great setup. No, but we were shown the key players and what their early motivations are: Jedis, Palpatine and all those in-between and what their motivations are or are hinted at. Whereas in 4,5,6 we're thrown right into the middle of the story to piece together the missing parts.

I think, though some might find my lack of faith disturbing (cymbal crash), that once these first 3 episodes are finished and then you take the whole series together (much like you watch a play from beginning to end), a greater appreciation will be felt for all 6 parts. Even if the first part was a little slow.

Plus, come on, let's keep in mind that I was about 5 when I saw Empire and Star Wars for the first time so I'm not as much in awe of the Star Wars mystique. It still is meant to appeal to youngsters and if I as an adult get caught up in the fun, then all the better.

I get the impression that between episode 1 and 4 things go really bad. Perhaps even something cataclysmic in episode 3 since episode 4 is called, "A New Hope" (both for the jedi and this distant galaxy).

Anyway, that's just my 2 pennies.

    Yoda was CGI?

    by terry_1978

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the brief glimpse of him last night. No, I'm not saying this because ILM-created images give me a hard-on, I literally thought it was a more advanced Muppet version they had created...it's basically a shot of Yoda looking behind his back upwards at someone or something...he looks extremely realistic in the shot, and if you didn't know it was CG created, you would really think it was just the Muppet.

    Looks amazing

    by boba_fett

Check out my name. Think I'm psyched for this movie???? FETT!!!!!!! I have seen Mandalorian armor in action, my friends, and it is glorious. The images from the AOTC seared themselves into my brain and kept popping up throughout Monsters, Inc. to distract me. True, this film could suck. It's possible. We all know the trailer for The Phantom Menace was one of the greatest ever, but the movie didn't quite live up.

Still, I'm optimistic. There's less Jar-Jar in this one, we have an Anakin who is confirmed to have strong acting ability, and we have MAKEOUT SCENES WITH NATALIE PORTMAN! Here's hoping that Episodes II and III, the LOTR films and the Harry Potter films are all great (I think Harry Potter has the best chance in respect, since the books are basically being directly ported to the screen). While we're at it, maybe the Matrix sequels and Spider-man will be good, too ;). There's always a chance.

INTERNET DRAMA QUEENS REVEALED! Find out about the CIVIL WAR bet

    by []d[][]v[][]d

Evidently, there is some sort of civil war brewing between theforce.net's staff and their own messageboard forums, commonly referred too as "The JC" or "JCN" or "JediCouncil.net". JCN moderators want to break off from theforce.net and start their own website using theforce.net sources (most of which are former AICN sources) and take along it's traffic and messageboard members. What does this half to do with AICN and Starwars? Well you will notice on the subjectline's URL contains leaked threads from "private areas" of JCN and a spinoff ezboard. In these leaked threads, some AICN talkbackers are featured such as: GunsBlazing, FatboyRobers, and our beloved darthpsychotic. And dont forget the Jedi Mission Plo-Koon and Ki-Adi run, that's right bitches MORE JEDI. And I hope you Star Wars fans know about LURTZ!! LOL. He's basically the bad guy, the MAIN BAD GUY, the one who DOESNT EXIST in the books. Oh, yeah, he has face paint and carries a sword (double bladed?) for the climactic battle that again...DOESNT TAKE PLACE IN THE BOOKS. LOL...in other words, LURTZ is the Sith Lord for this fim. LOL. As for the AoTC "trailer", lol

    by crazycactus

What AoTC "trailer" are we talking about?

A dozen 2-3 second clips with Darth Vader breathing is a pretty sad excuse for even a "teaser" trailer.

Didn't get me excited at all. In fact, the opposite occurred. I was giddy with anticipation once the Lucasfilm logo hit the screen, but was flat 45 seconds later when it ended.

Each clip barely let you see what was there in the first place. Bah!

The LoTR:FoTR trailer on MI was a lot more impressive and even had a smattering of Gollum in it: a lovely "Precioussssssss". Gotta love it!

    Here am I!

    by the hierophant

Yes, I'm a die-hard LOTR nut. And yes, I think the LOTR movies will be wonderful, to say the least. But that in no way prevents me from being excited about AOTC, though many of the jabbingly caustic remarks here make me ashamed to in any way associate myself with such a brattish and conceited crowd of self-centered fuck faces. It also seems funny to me that when the TB for the most recent LOTR trailer came around, practically everybody there was saying stuff like, "Oh, you can't judge a movie by its trailer" and, "Don't you think it's a little early to jump the gun?" Yet now, many of those same hypocrites come right back here and proclaim from one 30 second teaser (yeah, that's right; A FUCKING 30 SECOND TEASER) that, "AOTC will kick LOTR's ass" and, "There's no way Lucas could fuck this one up." Well, guess what folks??? He can. And if TPM is any indication, he will. Now that doesn't mean I'm no longer a fan of SW. I am. And I probably always will be, despite how hard I'm coming down on some of you assholes. But please, realize that this is only a teaser. Yeah, you heard me right. IT'S ONLY A TEASER. And Georgie has yet to prove that he's beyond his ROTJ and TPM slump. So until I see AOTC with my own 2 eyes, I remain cautiously anticipatory, at least as far as AOTC is concerned, and hopeful that each of you idiots will take the time to use a precious, God-given instrument before you post on this TB--your brain.

Plus it's actually the Trekkies who can't get laid not the Star Warriors. Chicks love the Yoda... Seriously though... Anyone who thinks "getting laid" is all there is to having a girlfriend has not only never had sex buthas never had a girlfriend besides Rosey Palm. Plus you bemoan the fact that we have nothing better to do then come to AICN and discuss the Star War trailer while it seems you have nothing better to do then come here and bitch about us which is rough 529 times more pathetic. So I think we ALL know who is the one who is really in need of a life. Although that name alone is a dead give away... "Magic Ninja" Now THERE'S a chick magnet net handle if I ever heard one. *rolls eyes*.

    This is hilarious...

    by jon snow

Watching the insecure Lucas worshippers trash LoTR because they fear that it might actually be everything that TPM wasn't - a good film. Very amusing. Personally I love Star Wars and LoTR and want both movies to be awesome. But guess what? Nobody here knows if they are going to be any good. If trailers were an indication of great a film is, then Episode 1 was going to be the next Laurence of Arabia. Sadly, we all know (even you Lucas butt kissers) that TPM was a dismal effort. Even LoTR might blow chunks. UNTIL THE FILMS ARE OUT, WE DON'T KNOW SHIT. The hot shot know-it-alls who like to trash films they haven't even seen makes me laugh. I've never seen such insecurity. You Star Wars apologists should be nervous. I hope LoTR is the great movie event of our generation because that would rain on your little Lucas led parade.

Which writer to get for Lucas's dialogue problems

    by successor

David Mamet. He'd be perfect for the job. Imagine if he had written some of the dialogue for Obi Wan in a New Hope:

"Luke. Luke. The Force, Luke. Use it, m****rf***er. M*****rf****r, use it. G**damn it...the Force, Luke. Use it. The Force. Luke, use the Force. The Force, you stupid f**k! Use the f**king Force before I shove it up your a**!"

I don't have any emotional investment in LOTR as you seem to think. I just hope its a good movie. You on the other hand seem to have a really big emotional problem with it. Here are some of your quotes: "LOTR is shit. I don't even have to have seen it to know this." "LOTR is crap. Same goes for Harry Potter." "Nothing can ever change this fact. LOTR, HP, all crap - sincerely." "It's time to glorify Star Wars again." "Now, common sense dictates therefore that any report of LOTR having downloaded more trailers obviously comes from nervous producers, because there is NO WAY that it's true." --Why do you find this so hard to believe when there are something like 20,000 people a day worldwide getting access to the web? There are more people on the web (and more people with broadband access which was virtually nonexistent to home consumers) than there were three years ago when EP1 trailer was put on the net. Do the math. Here are some more of your quotes, I think it is obvious you need medical help..."SW is on another level. Accept it, and stop talking about your shitty LOTR. The books are long, extremely boring and stupid and there aren't any dragons in it so be quiet. No cares about that shit." Well you asked me "I can't understand why you personalize this so much! What do you have a stake in the LOTR franchise?" I don't have a stake in it. I just said I hope its a good movie, why would I want it to fail? I like to be entertained. I also hope AOTC is good too. Hell, if I had a choice I'd never see another bad movie as long as I live. You on the otherhand seem to have a very personal grudge against some movies that boarders on the histarical. You need help dude.

That's about all I can say. I mean I like the fact that it's going to be a dark episode - Empire being my favorite and all. But it's just... well it's just kinda there. I know some of you think it's cool that they aren't telling you nothing about the movie - but my god, you could have Darth Vadar breathing and a title card saying "this is a Star Wars movie" and almost get the same effect. But I do hope this will be a very tight flick - no one could tell right now, it's not showing itself off as much as Harry Potter and it's doesn't have "I'm going to kick serious ass" written all over it like Lord of the Rings but hey, no matter how much you possibly hated The Phantom Menace you're only full of shit if you don't admit that you are the least bit interested in seeing the next episode of the Star Wars saga. Because, after all, it's Star Wars...

  • Sorry, I just wrote that in caps to just get your attention. But I just want you to know that 1. you can't declare yourself a king of TB, especially when hardly anyone is responding to anything you say. And that is because of 2. you are trying too hard. Like I know you want to just get in a serious debate with me because, after all, I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan, making me a good target. But that's your problem right there, you are making it more than obvious that you want to get a rise out of someone like me. So therefore, there's no real purpose to get in a heated discussion about LOTR and AOTC with you. So seriously, if you want to be this 'king of the talkback' that you so badly want to be - don't try so hard. I mean if you wanted to get a rise out of people, tell them you don't understand how the special effects are blowing peoples minds away in LOTR because they look so damn cartoony to you, but not Comodore 64ish - it's so obvious when you say that that you are either full of shit or full of sarcasm. I'm just being honest man, you suck at what you do. You're like that fat kid on the baseball team that always tries to steal bases, but just can't do it because your fucking weight holds you back so much. In other words, just stop trying.

    by mpg

Really, you know nothing at all. That's no news to anyone here, but perhaps some people like the cheap laughs that you can get from watching a troll being taken apart. So here we go. First: There are no literary critics who acknowledge LOTR? Uh... you don't know the quote about the world being divided into those who have read LOTR and those who are going to read it? That's a quote from a literary critic. Second: Lurtz is not the main baddy in the movie. Duh. Where do you get your information from anyway? Weekly World News?? Third: The climactic battle you claim is not in the books actually isn't in the movie. If you want to bash LOTR at least do it right and stop making stuff up. To quote Mercier: "but I know too damn much". Well, obviously not. Lurtz kills Boromir in the movie, that's the only fight he's in (hardly a "climactic battle"). And that fight is in the books. Too bad, Mercier, isn't it? Ask your kindergarten teacher to read it to you again! But this time, pay attention! Fourth: It's not "Hobbits vs. Jedi", but "Hobbits vs. Ewoks" or "Hobbits vs. Gungans". Get yousa facts right! In both case, the Hobbits win easily. Fifth: It's not Williams vs. Enya, but Williams vs. Shore. You know damn much? Nah, you know damn little. Where you got the idea that Enya is doing the soundtrack is beyond me. Weekly World News again, or the Cartoon Channel News at 9? Sixth: An imposter setting you up as doof? Mercier, you ARE the doof of the talkbacks, how can anyone set you up? Looks like you're getting paranoid!

    by captain drew

Ok... I admit that Jar Jar was annoying at times, but his character was as important to the star wars universe as any other and deserves a fair shot at becoming cool in Episode 2 doesn't he? I don't think Lucas should make him a minor character in this movie just because we don't like him! What kind of a world are we in when WE dictate how the creator creates??? It just doesn't seem right. It's HIS vision... not ours. As much as I personally didn't care for Jar Jar, I cared for the ewoks even less and they are still an extremely important part of the Star wars mythos. I never thought I'd say this but... I hope there is plenty of Jar Jar in episode 2. By the way, The lord of the rings trilogy is going to be too cool to exist. I hope the next two star wars flicks can measure up.

Star Wars / LOTR -- the good, the bad, the ugly...

    by lost-ark-1

I'm new to this forum, so hello all. I stopped poking my head into forums a long time ago because of the pungent odor left by the ranting posts, strewn about like little rat turds, from little children like this Mercier fellow.

(side note: I mean really, does anyone over 15 say "schooled" anymore?)

But I digress, I agree with others that the whole lotr v. sw thing is about as ridiculous as an east coast/west coast gangsta shootout. I mean, do we have to wait for Lucas to take a gunshot in a drive by from a disgruntled gang of basement nerds who melted down their Frodo pewter figures into bullets?

I hope to God above that they both will be incredible movies. I hope that Lucas truly took the criticizm to heart and made this tale a tad darker.

Just as I hope that P. Jackson has found the proper tone to tell what has the potential to be a mouth watering movie extravaganza of a jaw dropping trilogy that has could very well be the first real fantasy movie and revitalize that genre.

Where am I going with this? Bottom line is can we steer this little cyberspace ad hoc committe back to the real issue... HOW WAS THE TRAILER?

    p.s.

Can't we all just come together and mutually hate true festering fecal nuggets like BATTLEFIELD EARTH and DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS?

Star Wars Vs LOTR revisited & the CGI Yoda

    by jmyoda

TO all you LOTR fans who bash SW: GET A FUCKING LIFE! To all you SW fans that bash LOTR: GET A FUCKING LIFE! ... Ahem. With that said I'd like to say I love the Star Wars Saga. It's my favorite franchise and ESB is my all-time favorite film. I have a Star Wars collection that would make most you guys cream your shorts. (We're talking lots of vintage, including a complete set of vintage 12" dolls) I also love LOTR. It's my all-time favorite book trilogy. In essence they both kick ass. I am excited as hell about FOTR. The trailer was sweet. I am also excited about AOTC after seeing some shots from the trailer. However I have worries about both. I'm worried LOTR will stray too far from the book. I have worries about AOTC. I'm worried Lucas will roll out the lame ass kiddy shit he gave us in TPM. Not to say TPM is a bad movie. I find it very good. Just not as good as the OT, even ROJ is a few shades better. However I hope Lucas has learned from his mistakes on TPM and now that he has gotten the attention of today's kids will elevate the style and feel to what he did with the classic trilogy. I original in no way wanted to see a CGI Yoda but now I'm thinking it could be what Yoda needs. Oz kind of half-cares anymore. They had to cut Yoda's screen time in half because Oz would only work on TPM for a limited time. Plus I was less then impressed with the new Yoda puppet in TPM. The sculpture was awesome but the final puppet just didn't have the magic the ESB puppet had. Just as long as it's done by someone who A) has studied Yoda's ESB performance backwards and forwards B) can do CGI as good as Watto and Sebulba C)isn't a cartoon happy like whoever did Jar Jar, Ben Quadronaros and the announcers... Then we could have that old Yoda magic back. I can't wait to see him bust his Jackie Chan-meets-Crouching Tiger moves on Chris Lee (who by the way is the chief villain in AOTC for those who don't know) That's gonna kick so much ass if done right.

    Legitimate critics who liked LOTR

    by lazarus long

I know this TB is cold and stiff, but just wanted to dispute one of Mercier's weaker claims. Let me preface this by saying I am not against either of these films, but I would probably have higher respect for the Star Wars FILMS because its original form is cinematic, whereas the LOTR films, however great, will always be adaptions of the previous (and certainly superior) literary form. Mercier stated that no legitimate critic could appreciate LOTR as literature. Let me remind you that on the actual first page of my copy of Fellowship, there's a quote from ESTEEMED and HIGHLY RESPECTED IN HIS OWN RIGHT poet W.H. Auden, who wrote aout Fellowship for the New York Times Book Review back in the day: "No fiction I have read in the last five years has given me more joy than Fellowship of the Ring". To suggest that Tolkien is unworthy of critical respect is a little naive, especially when several other genre writers have been accorded the same. Philip K. Dick is certainly no one to scoff at, and if he wasn't writing about Orcs and Hobbits, he was writing about a multitude of pulpy alien creatures and concepts. And by the way, when you are claiming to be the King of TalkBack, it's best to respond to all of the points made against you, not just the ones you have witty comebacks for. Amateur.

Sorry, bitches, missing the point again. I was even going to say "And dont mention Auden." Auden is remembered as a great poet not critic. But you see, the point is, the big time critics Kenner, Bloom DONT give LOTR canon status, but again, bitches you MISS the point. Is LOTR a good read, yeah, its not bad. The point is, its not part of any CANON (note Auden was a homosexual Englishman, something Sam and Frodo...ouch!) when talking about significant literature. Oh, I know bitches, its sold, its sold, but then nobodys read it but you bitches, and we all know sales numbers dont mean squat, right, LOL. Do you now understand? The point is, LOTR is fantasy and so is Star Wars. You want to talk kiddy? by wilko185

except when mercier harps on about how AOTC will kill every other film at the box office. THEN they're important ;) Or does he mean people buy books without reading them? Apologies for veering off topic, but really, mercier keeps begging to be kicked.... LOTR has never been popular with "big-time literary critics" (see www.prospect.org/ print/V12/10/mooney-c.html without the space). But even Harold Bloom, who wouldn't "shelf" LOTR as mercier puts it, has edited a couple of books on Tolkien. I've never heard of "Kenner" (unless you mean the guy who wrote Bored of the Rings?) but I'm sure he's in the Bloom mould. And they're right not to admit LOTR to their "canon". LOTR isn't really a 20thC literary novel at all. It's an epic saga, romance, whatever, but not a modern novel. That's why they just don't get it. Mercier doesn't get it either, if he thinks LOTR is just whimsical, and fantasy is just for kids (or that childrens' literature can't have depth). (BTW what's a "legitimate" critic? I guess Auden was an illegitimate critic, because he didn't agree with mercier. one of the last century's most "legitimate" critics (on Old English lit. anyways) was JRRT himself. I bet he's spinning in his grave over Bloom's disapproval ;). Of course, the canonical status of the book is irrelevant to the merit of the LOTR films, which is in turn irrelevant to AOTC, so back to the topic at hand: AOTC will rock! (maybe)

Sales dont mean a thing, but as usual it needs to be spelt out for everyone -- all the LOTR bitches talking about how LOTR is going to set a new standard in filmdom, lol, well, anyway, to do that, I mean, to just make it happen, you obviously need numbers. If you're going to be the "new" trilogy that smacks Lucas and Star Wars around (remember, bitches, youre the ones who said this was happening for the last umpteem years) you need a large fan base. Therefore, you need sales. So no, the fact that the Star Wars EP1 DVD broke sales records left and right (how, right bitches? I mean, I thought eveyrone hated that flick?lol), that Ep1 broke box-office records (how did that happen, I thought you whiny bitches hated it?), the fact that Star Wars games are on all the new consoles, the fact that the trailers are hitting with all the right films adds up to this -- people to make that fan-base you bitches think LOTR is going to get. Strike one, you dont have the kids. Oh, see, again, you can talk about how this and that is a kiddy film and that youre pile of Lurtz is some golden egg thats going to change the world, but then guess what -- YOU NEED THOSE KIDS. LOL. Figure it out, its REALLY NOT THAT HARD. So, you see withOUT those kids this holiday and JUST PERFECT timing to have the films open up AFTER everyone's done buying gifts for the holidays. Dont matter, right, bitches? LOL, yeah, well, trust me, if you had LOTR action figures and video games with the kiddies this year (oh, I know the figs are out, I see them warming sheleves daily), in other words, if they KNEW what it was enough to get it on a Christmas list, youd have some kind of off-center fan base. But as it is, they didnt even get the timing right. LOL. Why? Because they knew that little boy in the broom-stick would SMACK their asses. OUCH! Now, I need to know who is writing the Fellowshop novelazation? LOL. If that doesnt SMACK of Hollywood -- Tolkien is going to be rewritten so that Liv Tyler's scene and LURTZ can make their appearances lol... I guess those'll be the books people read, too...lol. Oh yes, you have been SCHOOLED by the KING of Talkback....

    by gost

I think that both LOTR and AOTC are going to be great. Lord Of The Rings will be better only because it's something new and fresh. All you people who have been bashing star wars are ass holes. If you all remember lucas said that the first one will be light and happy, and that he didn't know how a 90's crowd would take it. He also said the movies would get darker and darker. This is nothing new. But both are going to be very good.

Basherkills just stepped into a big pile of poodoo

    by mpg

Basherkills, if you weren't already, I'd say that you just turned yourself into one of the biggest laughs to ever appear on a talkback. Let's look at this quote: "There are no audiences for the movies Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings." In the UK, Harry Potter has just broken the pre-sales record for Phantom Menace. Duh. If there is NO audience for it, then who is buying these tickets? But oh... right... you are going to say it's all a big conspiracy. The studio execs are buying the tickets. They don't have a problem with loosing millions of Dollars as long as they can claim that it's bigger than Star Wars. ------------------------------- And at some point you'll have to explain to us where that idea comes from: "I have never ever seen anyone make a movie with the express intention of challenging George Lucas to the degree that the makers of this thing have." Oh, ok... show us the interview where any of the makers of LOTR challenge Star Wars. Now? Where? Too bad, you can't show it, because you made this up. Mercier is a bad troll, but you're even worse, because at least he's not making up ALL of his arguments. Poor Mercier, he can't call himself King of the Talkback, and you're even stealing the title King of the Trolls from him.
------------------------------ But I can see why you think that LOTR is bad. You say the book is boring... that sort of gives it away. You're just some semi-illiterate guy who can't sit through a book of more than a hundred pages. If Star Wars was a book, you'd hate it too.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Mercier, really, I'd even enjoy you're messages if you didn't lace them so much with cluelessness. You know, the best trolls are the ones who actually know what they are talking about and drive a point home with that knowledge. First: No, Lurtz is not going to make it into "The Two Towers". Who is being schooled now? Second: Yes, Enya is going to appear on the soundtrack on _two_ songs, one of which only appears in the ending credits. You said that Enya is doing the soundtrack. Nope, she's only doing vocals on two tracks. It's Shore who is doing the soundtrack. Third: You said that NO literary critic gives LOTR good grades. Now that people have given you some examples, you try to evade them by saying that they don't count. Also, how many literary critics have acknowledged the Star Wars novelizations as world literature? Now? How many? If you want to compare Star Wars and LOTR, you either have to compare books with books or movies with movies. Otherwise you're making the same mistake that the Star Wars bashing LOTR-maniacs are making (yes, I happen to be a Star Wars fan who hates these guys as much as the LOTR-bashing SW-maniacs). Well, looks like it's back to troll training for you.

It is okay to be excited about all of the franchises. The AOTC trailer was to short to show me anything to form an opinion. I am not a film, and english major, so I basically have nothing but my thoughts that are based upon knowledge that I already have. So how would I know if something sucks or not. It doesnt take a educated person to figure out that this merceir is an ignorant person who feeds of LOTR fans anger. His vocabulary consists of female dogs and excalamation points! What a maroon, I do not understand some people. We are all geeks. It is Sunday morning and we are discussing movies on a internet message board. Oh man I need to get outside LOTR ROcks, HP is really fun, and Star Wars happened in a Galaxy far far far away. That is all I have to say about that. Were is breakfast?

AOTC may well be a very good film.
LOTR may well be a very good film.
HP may well be a very good film.

There is no way to judge these things without having seen them. That is common sense. One may speculate about them but no-one who has not seen them can be definitly sure about it. In your case however you seem to have decided that you will love the former and hate the 2 latter regardless of what they are like.
but just answer me this, ever had a girlfriend? or a boyfriend even? (I don't judge)

    by woolver

First off the trailer. That sombitch was short but it rocks, cannot wait to see the full one in front of Harry Palms. Second of all who gives a fuck about LOTR anyway. I have asked everybody I know if they were going to see LOTR and they didn't know what the fuck I was talking about. Granted I am not one of those FANATICS that read the books or played dungeons dragons when I was a kid but to compare HP and LOTR to STAR WARS is a fucking joke. Come 20 years from now who the hell is going to remember HP or LOTR? the answer: NOBODY. SO you HP and LOTR fans get ready to get your ass handed to you by AOTC.

    by jon snow

I just realized the root cause of Mercier's irrational dismissal of LoTR (or anything non-Star Wars). The man is scared. Scared that AotC might be as crappy as TPM. Scared that LotR might be so good that it may become the next Star Wars type phenomenon. I've read his posts a few times now, and beneath the cocky bravado there is a sense of deperation lurking there. He realizes that the Star Wars machine is in danger of being surpassed. Right now, this is just speculation. Even the self-proclaimed messiah Mercier doesn't know how good AotC and LotR will be. But the mere possibility that LotR MIGHT be incredible has him wetting his pants.

Trollers are just jerks. There's no such thing as a good jerk. Oh wait, yes there is... I believe the ninja-druggie knows all about that. }}}}{{{{ This subject makes people turn evil. Why don't we just set up a talkback where all the people who want to bash Star Wars can continually do so, rather than posting in every Star Wars related topic just to let the world know Once Again that they -Hated Phantom Menace- (tm). Anyway, Being an evil clone myself, I enjoyed this trailer. I'm offended by the lack of evil clone footage, but will take the small sampling they've tossed to us as a promise of more evil clones. And just to satisfy the "evil" part of my contract, I'll have to say that people should be nicer to crackwhores, man! Why do crackwhores get all the bad press? Basher lets make this nice and easy for you...

    by castor777

First off, I just want to give you a point that no one else seems to be making. Something quite a few Star Wars fans know. See George Lucas, like everyone, needed some inspiration to make something like the Star Wars series, it's not something that comes out of nowhere. And what does Lucas say inspired him - well the light sabers and their duels were inspired by The Seven Samurai - the action and tone were inspired by Saturday matinee series - and the epic and scope of it all was inspired by Lord of the Rings. I just want you to really know that Lucas has said this. So when you're sitting there talking about how great Lucas is compared to Jackson and how Star Wars shits over Lord of the Rings, just know that when the film premieres - George Lucas just might be sitting in attendance. Secondly, yes there is no lie about the amount of trailer downloads - LOTR is the king of trailer downloads. Why you don't believe that I don't know. The Phantom Menace came out 3 years ago - do you have any fucking idea how much more people are online since 3 years ago? I had just got my computer up and running 3 years ago - a lot has fucking changed. And the words 'Lord of the Rings' are quite well known words - if people haven't read the books they've heard of them - and obviously they'd like to at least take a peak at what is being made out of them. Which is another interesting fact - since the books were published they had sold over 100 million copies and have been published in the most languages out of any fictional books; since the release of the trailers and marketing of the film they have gone up 400 percent since the past year. No fan base for these movies huh? Blow me you idiotic son of a bitch. And before you continue to talk shit about the film, why don't you just take a good look at the trailer again. Seriously, take a good hard look. Ok, done that? Now what rings true about this trailer? It's a trailer for an epic we see, one with tons of visual effects (oscar nod), one with swords, bows, and axes being shown (sound effects nod, sound editing nod), one with lots of action (editing nod), one looking much like the world we had pictured when we read the books (art direction nod), one that looks absolutly beautiful (cinematography nod), one with music by Howard Shore (score nod) and songs by Enya (song nod), one with one of the most well known characters in literature history (Sir Ian McKellen acting nod), one which is making tons of publicity because the director is making all three films simalteneously along with writing and producing them (directing nod) (adapted screenplay nod) (best picture nod). Sure, it probubly won't be up for some of those, but I can assure you that you will hear about Lord of the Rings all over again come March at oscar time. And another thing, if you really consider the books boring - how far have you actually read? Honestly? Cause if you read all three books I can't imagine someone not excited about Return of the King. Because, truth be told - if they get it right it could very well be a cinematic masterpiece. But you didn't get that far did you? Nope, didn't read any of them? Yeah, didn't think so. In the words of Will Hunting, "fucking people baffle me."

    by mike frenzy

Most exciting thing Ive seen in the theaters since The Phantom Menace. I absolutely loved it. I was waiting in anticipation for the teaser, I kept crossing my fingers and praying every time the green screen came up. When I finally saw the 20th century FOX logo I was still skeptical but when I saw the Lucasfilm Ltd logo I had no worries. I quickly "shhhh"ed everyone in the audirnce and they became some what quiet (they were all little kids) the shots were flashed before me as my insides swarmed with happiness and delight. I mumbled things to my brother when the solar sailor, Jango Fett, and Yoda all came on screen. When the title screen flashed I let out a triumphant "YES!!!" and then parents in the audience appaulded. I think they clapped for the movie and for my enthusiasm for the movie. I'll tell you this . . . I CAN'T WAIT.

oh and Monsters Inc. was good too . . .

London's Daily Chronicle article for Harry

    by withnail&i

London Nov 4 (Reuter) -- An Oxford don has sensationally panned last century's most popular work, branding JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings 'an error-ridden pot-boiler' it emerged today. Oxford professor emeritus of humanities, David J Hickling, launched into the searing critique on one of his own univeristy's most prominent former dons, just as Tolkien's hobbit heroes are set to do box-office battle with JK Rowling's young wizard Harry Potter. 'I know his work has given many readers a lot of pleasure over the years, but it simply doesn't stand up to the critical spotlight,' said Hickling. 'For a start, this supposedly 'other world' uses the Roman calender to measure time. I don't recall the legionaries ever having to defend a place called Middle Earth,' he sneered. 'Even if we judge the text in terms of its own context, it still falls apart. The logical errors are endless. For example, the plot hinges on the destruction of 'the one ring'. It is a task entrusted to the vulnerable hobbit heroes, who must endure the familiar travails before their heroic task is completed and evil vanquished. 'Yet, creatures who inhabit this world include friendly giant eagles, who can carry people on their backs! 'Tolkien could have saved his 'good' creatures a lot of time and bother by simply delivering the ring, via eagle post, to its destruction in Mt Doom.' Prof Hickling was speaking on the eve of the UK release of the Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which also came under attack. 'JK Rowling is very limited. I would let my five-year-old daughter read her books, but I would expect her to have outgrown them by the time she was seven.' Post-production work is completed on the first film of Tolkien's trilogy, the Fellowship of the Ring, whic is set down for a December 19 UK release. Critics are expecting a close battle between the two fantasy titans for the lion's share of the lucrative Christmas box office spoils.

    clarification

    by woolver

Just wanted to clarify my earlier post. What I meant by AOTC kicking ass over HP and LOTR is in terms of popularity and box office and not in quality. Even though I don't know much about LOTR or HP im still going to check both out because i have heard good things about both. Yes im a huge STAR WARS fan but that won't stop me from enjoying the other films on their own merit. I was just trying to point out that in terms of fanbase STAR WARS in my opinion is more popular than LOTR and to compare the two in terms of that would be futile. SEE YA

LOL, or as someone tried to call in an ENYA (LOL!) Talkback -- "High Fantasy." You know, Woolf, Stein, Pound, and Tolkien...LOL, uh, sorry bitches, nope. And BECAUSE you bitches ALWAYS need this cleared up beyond lucidity : nobody is saying LOTR are the worst novels or are bad fantasy. Has Tolkien been ripped off? LOL, yeah, mainly be Peter Jackson, but the point bitches, is you try and put LOTR in some "high fantasy" (LOL!) category as if wizards and hobits are more intellectualy stimulating than Jedi and Sith...Do you follow yet? • I was under the impression that this string was about the star wars trailer, but obviously not.

A side note about LOTR (if not interested fellow talkbackers then skip this one):

IT is canon. Being canon has nothing to do with a group of pissly little critics giving it a thumbs up. It has had a huge impact on every single fantasy novel that ever followed it.

I have traversed my way through a small hill of fantasy novels and LOTR created the friggin genre. As well as inspiring every damn rpg game out there.

If you set your gage to follow critics then you are even worse off that I thought.

So stop acting like such a child. You've "schooled" nothing. In fact maybe you should finish high school before you let loose another string of inane posts.

    by wryan

So, what kind of climate DO you expect to have up your own ass? I would imagine that once inside, you really would need that whip to get back out, on account of your unusually large head. May I ask you some more question? Thank you: you have been very adamant that Darth Maul and Lurtz are similar characters. I will be the first to agree. I thought the same thing initially. While moderately similar in talent and purpose, they are very different as well. While there is no character with the name Lurtz in the book, the idea is there. The race that Lurtz belongs to IS in the book (as well as the "face-painting" that you oh-so-cleverly alluded to earlier). No, Lurtz does not carry a double-edged sword, or whatever you were alluding to. By the way, the pre-production on this movie goes back about five years so the idea of the character could easily have been envisioned already before Lucas got to it separately. You seem to know so many details about Tolkien's book and life and sales and whatnot, I have to wonder if you are really a closet ringer pouting his way to ass-like levels of despise here at TB. One final note, your sprinkling of the words bitches and LOL into your posts shows that you have command, not of TB, but rather a fifth-grade vocabulary and education. To everyone else: I know that I should not have even bothered with this asinine twit, but I was bored so what the hell, right? I have high hopes for both films.

For Mercier, TotTB (Troll of the Talkback).
Background: I'm a LoTR dweeb, read the trilogy eight times (so far). I'm a SW geek, saw a New Hope five times on first release. That being said.
Re: Liv Tyler getting a larger role than in FoTR the book. Who the fuck really cares? It implies some story distortion, but so what. 2 hours and 50 minutes won't be enough to do totally accurate justice to FoTR. I hear she shows up to challenge the Black Riders at Rivendell (instead of Glorfindel), ah well doubtless Glorfindel doesn't make even a cameo, and probably Tom Bombadil is missing too, disappointing, but within the limits of artistic license. And finally wrt to Liv, a few more screen minutes for her would sit very well with me thank you =). Re: Lurtz. You go on and on about this guy. What is your problem? Does he really get much screen time. So he's the guy who offs Boromir? So what! So they decided to give the Uruk-Hai soldier a name. Big Deal! I doubt he'll be on screen for more than a minute or two. Re: LoTR being critically acclaimed. Perhaps you should go back and do some '70s research about how critically acclaimed SW4:A New Hope was when it first debuted. I now turn my cyber-buttocks towards you, Moon over Miami, buddy.

    Lame Trailer

    by spooky31

This was a pretty weak trailer, so I'm going to have to wait to see more to be able to judge what kind of movie Episode II is going to be.
I mean this trailer was about 30 seconds long, and with all the fades to black during the thing, I'm willing to bet we only saw about 10 seconds of actual footage.
I did notice a few things though: first of all, all those kids at the computer consoles (possibly clones-in-training)...boy did that look lame!
The CGI Yoda looked pretty goofy too...what's wrong with using the puppet again for close-ups, George?
Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel once commented that the more special effects and less dialogue you see in a movie trailer indicates the quality of the movie that is coming out...the Episode II teaser doesn't have one line of dialogue...maybe because, like Episode I, this one is going to be all eye-candy and no substance.

SW vs LOTR (From the teacher's lounge)...

    by falcon-1

Okay, the only reason I even mention Harry Potter is because it will probably still be showing in the theatres when FOTR comes out (probably at the discount movie houses by then). I really don't think it should even be mentioned in this "contest". Let's get to the meat of the arguement: Is Star Wars better than Lord of the Rings? Or vice-versa? Fact: both stories parallel each other in that they are created in a universe completely away from ours. Fact: Both stories center around an unlikely characters who, through perseverance, become heroes. Fact: both stories deal with magical/mystical themes; both are on different ends of the spectrum: SW leaning more toward sci-fi, LOTR leaning more toward fantasy. Fact: While Tolkien has taken a lot of critism for his prose, anyone who's read the FIRST SW novel would know that Lucas isn't the greatest writer the world has known either (deal with it Mercier). I would be remiss to not mention that while LOTR in it's entirety is very well known throughout the world (I believe I've read where it has been translated into 23 different languages), SW, while equally univeral in it's appeal worldwide, is NOT complete. We do not know what Lucas has in mind for Episode III (or II for that matter). There were many of you calling Lucas a hack after Ep. I came out ("Jar Jar!! What was he thinking?") Until 2006, we really won't know if Lucas' creation could as a whole be even compared to Tolkein's LOTR; Given what we've seen to-date, I would say the jury's still out. The first three (Eps. IV thru VI) were outstanding. They set the standard for Sci-Fi/Fantasy films. Ep. I (which I liked, btw)reintroduced us to that universe but had a reputation to live up to which it couldn't. Until I see Jackson's interpretation of Tolkein's work, I don't think it would be fair for ANYONE (including defrocked Kings of Talk Backs) to say either film is better than the other. But, from a literary standpoint, there's no contest: LOTR has and will continue to have a greater impact than SW. Honestly, though, my overall opinion is why do we even have to draw these comparisons? Can't we just sit back and injoy the next four years of what we all hope will be great movie-going experiences?

    Basherkills...impressive, most impressive

    by mercier, kotb

I'm enjoying how you're schooling these bitches. Almost as good as our good friend withnail&i that posted what some Oxford critic had to say about Tolkien...LOL, like I said, TOO EASY. But seriously, I LOVED Basherkills points -- you bitches all fell in line as soon as you heard this was going toe to toe with Lucas, and you bitches practically invented that whole concept! LOL. YOU ARE THE PEOPLE who've been reigning down pissy-rants about CGI (please dont make me list how CGI LOTR is, every damn villain is CGI) TPM was as well as all the "We're gonna knock Star Wars out." LOL, well, is it just me or a movie that opens on what, December 23rd? that's a few scratches above Dungeons and Dragons is also a movie that's not going to be around much past its opening day gross? What I'd like to know is HOW you bitches just ASSUMED there was some built in fan-base for this? Oh I know, the book, right? I mean, I love all those Fantasy movies that do big biz. That Discworld flick is such a blockbuster. LOL. See bitches, Discworld and I'm sure Asimov sold millions -- nobody gives a rip. So in the end, you get a movie that bastardizes the book, and that's chock-full of WEAAAKA cgi and this is supposed to bring about world peace? That IS how you spoke of it, right? LOL. And is it SERIOUSLY 2:50? LOL! Oh, i bet you bitches think that's great, but I hate to tell you, when everyone else finds out its that long, the only place they'll be sitting is in the next theater over, giving POTTER another view. Afterall, it has the AOTC trailer on it. And most of you have been SCHOOLED by the KING of Talkback. (VWOOOM! AOTC Trailer - NO JAR JAR!

    by cindroid

Some comments on seeing the teaser at Monsters INC, I was caught completely off guard. When I saw the Lucasfilm logo, I thought Hey, cool. The two 9 year olds with me were saliavating (sp). Quite a different feel with no traditional STAR WARS lead-in / music, etc... But the best part, so far, no friggin Jar Jar. Cindroid Out...

The KING is only going to say this one more time...

    by mercier, kotb

I dont know how many times I've said this, but SIGH, but subjects are slow to learn...I NEVER have said that Lucas is a great writer. I NEVER said the Star Wars novelezation was better than LOTR. The point with LOTR is this (Im going to TRY and make this simple for you bitches) you bitches talk about SW as a kiddy flick, and LOTR as "high fantasy," as if its inellecutally stimulating to read about Hobits and Orcs as oppossed to seeing Jedi and Sith...LOL. Ok, now this equation does NOT say Jedi and Sith are better, are you still with me? I doubt it, but I'll continue, but the point is the world at large doesnt see a difference between an Orc and a Gungan, got it? It's ALL FANTASY. Cue the purpose of literary criticsm -- no literary critic of any merit will put LOTR on a level other than fantasy, JUST LIKE STAR WARS MOVIES. Ok, here comes the hard part -- in other words, WHAT WERE YOU BITCHES BITCHING ABOUT FOR THE LAST UMPTEEN YEARS? Do you get it yet? The same goes for the CGI, lol.. GOLLUM, BALROG, CAVE TROLL, ENTS, SHELOB, ORC ARMY -- ALL, REPEAT ALL - CGI!!! Does this mean CGI is BAD? Not to me, bitches, here's where you ALWAYS miss the point -- the point is -- if CGI was so bad (according to your bitching during any Star Wars talkback over the last 4 years while weve been warned about the juggernaut lol, LOTR) then why arent you bitches up to your arms in hell-fire right now looking at whats coming? DO YOU GET IT YET? Lol, and the resounding sound comes in from the Shire, "Duh...what? Lucas sucks." Sigh...alas, you still have been SCHOOLED (even though you're too ...simple to yet realize how, apparantly - I mean, 100 schoolings SHOULD do it) by the KING of Talkback

  • So your statements about Jackson cashing in on a pre existing franchise is a really warped view of the movie business. And my friend, Lucas and Jackson have conversed.. what about? I dunnno, but they aren't on bad terms. So why should you be? Lucas even stated that he couldn't understand how Jackson could even attempt this trilogy- MEANING the phenomanl amount of work and skill required to pull it off. Why can't you appreciate the possibility that all these coming up big budget movies could be fantastic? It seems that all you star wars and lotr dorks are just full of hatred... why? What the fuck has Jackson/Lucas done to you guys to get you so upset? We had a similar discussion in film class last week where we came to the conclusion that when one gets passionate about a certain piece of art, they become VERY narrow minded. Add that to the fact that some of you dorks probably had screwed up childhoods due to being so warped, then well... welcome to AICN Talkback.

    by kizeesh

My dear BasherkillsRrite You seem to fail to understand that the majority of what you say is nonsensical rubbish. Saying that the download records are all falsified does not constitute an argument or even a valid point as it is only your paranoid notion of reality.
Also seeing as you evidently don't know anything about LOTR, have never read it and know nothing about the PJ-made trilogy, perhaps you should just give up on trying to slate it, as no-one will accept the opinion of someone who blatantly shows his own ignorance with every (badly parsed) sentence.
    oh and here's an example:

Oh don't worry, Basher, the third one is already made. Yeah, it's on it's way to a direct to DVD release next year with The Two Towers after New Line looks at their profits. LOL. But you bitches won't complain, right? LOL. I mean, isnt the director's version going to show Orc heads gettin' cut off!? LOL. WOO-HOO! "They'd be rated R" you can tell all your friends "if it was in theater with the Orc getting its head cut off!" Cue one girl, off in the faint distance, overhearing your conversation and walking in opposite direction -- quickly, as you continue with "H'yuck! No Clonetrooper ever got his head cut off WITH blood," as your buddy cleverly interjects, "I wish they'd cut Jar Jar's head off," and the two of you merrily find purpose in life from watching a CGI scene full of orcs losing body parts, blood spraying on the screen, while you nibble on some Burger King, give an offhanded look to your Alysa Milano poster, and reassure yourself that all is right in life -- Lucas never showed blood like this, and as we've learned from Matrix fans, nothing is cooler than people dying and blood a-squirting, right? I mean, if that doesnt say everlasting truth and higher aestheic plane than SW, I dont know what does, right bitches? Oh bitches, I CANT WAIT until those DVD's hit! The official site covered the trailer as well as quicktime did you fucking moron. On top of that they have theonering.net that does more daily updates on Tolkein and the movies than any other site I have ever seen. Oh my god, it's like an elementary kid saying Lake Placid is the king of all movies. Where did George Lucas say talk about his inspirations? Go out and fucking read any interview about Star Wars where they talk in depth with George Lucas. And about the 400 percent issue, it's funny how the Tolkien's are worried right now because it looks like they could actually live to see a time when every house hold owns the book. Dude, I did lay it out nice and easy for you - I gave you nothing but facts until I told you to rewatch the trailer and you totally overlook all of them. Grow up you stubborn son of a bitch. And by the way, if you haven't seen the trailer than how the hell are you predicting it's going to bomb? That's like me saying 'Confessions of a Dangerous Minds' will bomb even though I know absolutly nothing about it. But you don't see me saying that do you? You know why? Because I don't pretend to act like a foolish little brat who's mommy wouldn't give him a candy bar so I sit and whine about it over and over again. And the same goes to you to Mercier. I'll say it once and I'll say it again - you will never be the king of talkbacks. One line of dialogue almost ruins the whole thing...

    by ewem

As much as we hate Jar-Jar and many of us agree that TPM was the embodiement of what can go wrong with movies today: Cold, heartless, soul-less, money making machines based around a CGI jerkoff... the whole Star Wars saga almost gets ruined by the mention of the midichlorians. You never try to explain magic! That's what made the real Star Wars movies, the Trilogy, so special. The Force is just the Force. Period. This midichlorian thing was the worst poor man's Star Trek BS I have ever seen. Even fans of TPM that I know cringe and have to agree with me on this.
I hope in EP's 2 and 3 and whatever else gets made that this little...detail is never mentioned again. Plain stupid.

  • Half the people don't care about Jackie Chan, but he just made Rush Hour 2 that made over 220 million. Half the people don't care about Pixar but they have the highest grossing film this weekend. Half the people don't care about James Bond but he has the longest running franchise of all time. And whether you believe it or not, half the people don't care about Star Wars - but Episode II will be the highest grossing film of next year. These are all movies, just like Lord of the Rings. So now, what is your point? There may not be millions and millions of people who will flock to the screen when Fellowship comes out, but there are well over 100 million that have read the books - and that's about equal to the amount of people that have viewed the Star Wars trilogy. That is comparing literature to film but you get the point - just because you act like you don't care there's obviously a whole shit load of people that do. When you come to that realization, than you will go through the first step of growing up. Then in a few years to come you might actually hit puberty, but I don't think someone like you can mature that much, Basher.

The movie is coming out in just over a month, and what kind of mainstream hype have i seen? NONE. ZILCH. Mericer,
your sophomoric posts, replete with souless, empty "laughoulouds", petty homophobic profanity and lessons devoid of substance do nothing but betray your real fears. You reluctantly realize LOTR is an upcoming masterpiece, WETA's effects are ILM quality, in some cases surpassing them with the MASSIVE ORCS & THE CAVE TROLL. PJ has wowed the world with the coolest thing to be seen in years. The kick ass cave troll with the big hammer is right up there with the Jurassic Park T-Rex and Harryhausens Cyclops. That thing rules ! The footage of this sequence received standing ovations by critical crowds at both Cannes and SIGGRAPH. WETA is comprised of many people from outside NZ, some from ILM, some DD, some Disney and they are doing 1st class work collectively.... The original story is a literary classic of a sincerity and quality that you will never EVER be capable of in your lifetime. Your foul reactionary posts holds no weight and are fear induced. YOUR LESSON MERCIER: wait and see this movie before you condemn something you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT.

I saw the trailer the other night. Nice CGI. But I'm still a little jaded from the first movie to be really excited about it. I'm sure it'll garner huge bucks regardless though.

Though this is totally off topic, some idiot above keeps ranting about literary critics slamming LOTR. Well, here's some more fodder pulled off barnes and noble's site:

    J. R. R. Tolkien is best known to most readers as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, regarded by Charles Moorman in Tolkien and the Critics as "unique in modern fiction," and by Augustus M. Kolich in the Dictionary of Literary Biography as "the most important fantasy stories of the modern period." From 1914 until his death in 1973, Tolkien drew on his familiarity with Northern and other ancient literatures and his own invented languages to create not just his own story, but his own world: Middle-earth, complete with its own history, myths, legends, epics and heroes.

By the way, Harold Bloom also detests Edgar Allen Poe. He's kinda in the minority on that one so perhaps we shouldn't take his criticisms as the word of God.

    Later,
    Scott

Huh...well, could that be because Poe is "Best loved when a teen and best left as a teen," as TS ELIOT might say? LOL, in other words, for todays bitches, the gothic kids or people who write really shitty poetry? They dig the Poe and swear by the Raven...oh wait! Same people that are going to be filling the aisles come December, right? And yeah, surprise, surprise, BandN have complimentary write ups on the books they sell! WOW! Novel (king of PUNS?)concept, huh? And for the billionth time, the point about the books was as a wholte, they are fantasy, like Star Wars films, so trust me, you're not one rung on the hipness ladder because you know who Boromir is. WHIP-TASH! (the sound of Indy's bullwhip signalling my departure) and you have been SCHOOLED by the KING of Talkback

    by siebling

I hope both of these movies rock! We need excellent entertainment and I certainly hope both 'Fellowship of the Ring' and 'Attack of the Clones' prove to be wondeful entertainment.

The wonders of truly amazing cinema are the most important thing...let's hope that we have several movies over the coming months that can transport us all into a realm of exuberance and amazement.

    by momojojo

Shut the fuck up first of all! What is with all the anger and nay saying. Let's see you create a film like TPM or an array of characters like Jar Jar. It is George's to do with as he pleases, if you don't like it, don't go to the theater, you piece of shit. BTW you are a repetitive moron as well. Just so you know...go jerk off to HP!

    by scottbell

I hope both LOTR and the new Star Wars will be good. I just have my doubts with AoTC as TPM was really shabby. Mercier - you have something against Poe now? Bloom had some valid points, but Jesus, you sound like a middle schooler bitching about how Joyce is hard to read. I'm fast becoming convinced (as many before have pointed out) you're Harry acting on these forums to generate some excitement. There's really no other way around it; nobody has as much tenacity and sheer hardheadedness to act like a total ass for this long. I don't even know why I'm even giving you a second thought. This is like trying to have an intelligent conversation with a talkative parrot.

Cockmunch buttfuck, shitty shitty, fuck fuck. *shew* OK I think I've caught up with everyone else now. While we're off topic go to www.worldwidewacky.com for a good show with classic halloween songs. yeah I know halloween is over but it's a good listen anyway. Back on topic... For the record the CGI Yoda is da bomb. Natalie looked hot as she always does. I could swear when she came up on screen I heard a voice in the back row of the theater say "Dude, I think I just filled the cup". BTW Monster Inc is worth seeing even if the trailer isn't playing. The Pixar guys are Gods. Shrek is still a hair better though. Harry is just in denial with Shrek for obvious reasons.

He won't bet me because he thinks that the numbers are rigged. Where do you think the numbers come from? They don't come from the studios rasin sack, they come from the MPAA, from the theaters man. Why would they report false numbers? Come on man, show some seeds and bet me. You've been blabbing up how bad this movie is gonna suck, prove you've got a pair. I bet you $100 US dollars that LOTR will do $500 million combined domestic and international. Everyone is watching for your reply.

Episode II: Attack of the Clowns

    by pisso the clown

"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate...leads to Golden Showers." With these words, Star Wars fans across the country will see the big screen debut of this happy little clown. Yes, folks, Darth Pisso will be basking the Jedi in his potent Golden Showers this spring. Mace Windu and Yoda will be feeling the rancid warmness of my magical Showers as they flee, helpless in the face of the mighty Sith (or Pith, as I will be renaming it). It warms this happy clown's heart to hear that he has been missed all this time. Yes, my heart is warm just like my stinky pee. Pee is funny. May the Forced Urinary Jokes be with you.

From the Daily Sneer for Harry

    by withnail&i

Eriador (Reuter) Nov 5 -- Wizard denies blame for collateral damage.
Fresh from saving the world from 'a dark fate worse than death', the wizard Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings faced harsh questioning about his conduct in JRR Tolkien's famous trilogy.
At an often heated press conference held after the Return of the King, Gandalf, also known as the Grey Pilgrim, Mithrandir and the Grey Wanderer, denied responsibility for the trilogy's excessive body count and the wholesale slaughter of innocents, which occur at regular intervals throughout the tale.
The sorcerer also denied exposing the lovable but diminutive and frail hobbits to extreme danger in their journey to 'the dark land' to defeat 'the dark Lord',
and claimed the pyschological scars sustained by the hobbit Frodo were 'his own stupid fault'.
The increasingly cross conjurer was particularly incensed by Guardian reporter Polly Bunting's suggestion that his own neglect and mismanagement, particularly
in the early stages of the campaign, led to hundreds, if not thousands of unecessary deaths.
'That's an outrage,' said Gandalf, who has no surname but is part of a mysterious race of super beings known as 'the Valar', who are sworn to fight the 'dark one'.
When asked why he simply didn't use his friends the eagles to hover over the 'dark mountain' and drop the ring into the 'dark flame whence it came', the maddened mage had to be restrained by his friends, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, fellow characters in the novel, who each play key roles in defeating 'the armies of darkness'.
And a spokesperson for ASH, the anti-smoking lobby group, needed protection after she challenged Gandalf, a lifetime pipe smoker, to set a proper example to the vulnerable youngsters who read the world-famous trilogy.
The enraged enchanter produced his pipe and lunged at ASH public promotions manager Noleen Drayton, shouting that for all he cared he would gladly thrust his three-bowl-a-day habit right up her gluteus maximus.
    Developing.

I find your lack of brains disturbing...

    by the_sentinel

I could swear the average age in here is 12. Don't you people ever grow up? I suppose asking for a civil discussion about the teaser for "Attack of the Clones" is completely out of order.

As for myself; I know I will thoroughly enjoy the experience of seeing both "LotR" and "AotC".
