MrCere raves on MONSTERS INC!
Hey folks, Harry here with some poor soul that met Quint... he didn't elaborate about the position of the Sea Man's pants at the time, but that's understandable, we all like to forget Quint's... how shall I put this... His libido hanging out there like a Golden Retreiver's tongue out the back of a pick up. But guess what his unsavory sailor tactics have bagged a SeaWorld viewer from San Diego with an impression or two of the brilliant MONSTERS INC! Supreme! Here ya go...
Mr. Harry,
MrCere here. After talking to Quint at San Diego Comic Con. he recommended
that I send you stuff. My computer conection at Comic Con failed me, but
now I have some stuff...
Last night I watched "Monsters Inc." in an auditorium full of parents and
kids and some friends. At the conclusion of the moive I considered the
glorious Fall/Winter movie season kicked off. I will be as spoiler free as
possible.
"Monsters" is the story of two cool working class Monster bachelors &
friends Scully and Mike. They live in an energy crisis monster world fed on
the energy of child screams. Scully is one of the very best there is at
generating screams but its obvious to us from the begining that he a nice
fella doing his job. He walks to the factory (Monsters Inc) to help the
monster community. He is a citizen that cares about others.
The conflict, hence the reason for this movie, comes when a child - called
"Boo" by Scullly - escapes the back of her closet and ends up in the monster
world via fantastic dimensional doorway that I wouldn't mind owning. I
would set mine to some closet in the Playboy mansion, but I digress.
Scully and Mike have the problem of this little child and what to do with
her complicated by their arch-scare rival who just might be even worse than
we think and the Monstropolis's (why didn't they call this Monstrocity?)
energy crisis and even the financial well-being of Monsters Inc (the power
company) itself.
So the problems our blue-collar heros face escalate and the real fun begins!
And make no mistake about it, this is FUN. This film has all the
fantastic/sci-fi fun and adventure that all those horrible, horrible summer
movies tried to have, wished they had and ultimate were so void of. I don't
want to spoil the sence of surprise, and I will not, but the film goes all
the places I didn't think it would. It explores the monter world and the
inner workings of Monsters Inc. (the factory) and it is indeed a wild ride.
It is also just plain cool. Cool enough, that I will not say any more.
The story itself is compeling and engaging, but the voice work by Billy
Crystal (Mike) and especially John Goodman (Scully) are just pure fun
without crossing over into the arena of being too silly or too one
dimensional. There are belly laughs aplenty but along with them the plot
develops and even accelerates. The laughs are sometimes slapstick and
sometimes situational but almost always smart.
I didn't catch the writing credit, but to that person I send my most sincere
praise. Well done.
All that being said, the real genious for me in this film is that, like the
poets have proclaimed life, "God is in the details." The lush visuals on
this flick, the corners and background monsters are where the real genious
is. Every new monster that crosses our screen, including several that
appear in minor roles for the duration, are a great mix of smart/funny/cool.
They are gross and laughable, ridiculous and pitiable.
Mike's girlfriend for instance, appears to be a one-note background
character, but every time they return to her she showcases a new visual
and/or emotional side. The surprises are minor but fun. The sushi bar isn't
populated with a bunch of slugs (although there are a few in the film,
including one janitor) but each character, no matter how brief has its own
little story or characteristic that I, as a viewer, loved. Mike and
Scully's walk to work is a great few moments made up of lots of tiny
instants that entertain and delight.
For me, that was the best part of the movie and the reason I will return to
see it again and drag friends and family along.
If I were handing out Best Picture nominations, SO FAR, for this year, this
film would definitely get to sit at the table with the heavyweights.
Because Shrek was sooo popular and enjoyable this year the two movies will
be compared. I love both, but if I had to pick one...for me its "Monsters
Inc." I hate to say that 'cuse I am a Dreamworks man over Disney everytime,
but with Pixar, there is real magic afoot here. Oh yea, and joy of joys, NO
SONGS!
There is no doubt in my mind that his movie is going to do some giant box
office numbers. I know nothing can really hurt the entity of Harry Potter,
but this film will not leave a void in theaters. Potter will hafta push and
shove teach and every film out of our multi-plexes. Kids, me, adults will
flock to this film. Disney vs. WB. Very interesting.
I am 100% confident this film will be remembered fondly long after this
movie year is over. I HOPE we can say that same for Potter and I really,
really, really hope we can say the same about Lord Of The Rings.
Oh yea...and the Episode II trailer was BITCHIN, but the audience was so
busy still applauding it for 20 seconds that I barely had time to hear that
Darth Vader breathing noise.
Best,
MrCere

I'm really looking forward to Monsters, Inc and THE TRAILER. Pixar knows how to tell a story, and Lucasfilm knows how to tease.
-
Bro,
How can we trust your review when you cannot even get the main character's tag right!?!
I saw an early workprint of the film and I will concur that it is indeed high calibur. An amazing film rivaling Toy Story 1 and 2. Yes, I said it rivals TS1 and TS2. The story structure is strong in this film, mixing excitement surprise, heart and humour. Monsters will tug at your heart strings, it tugged on mine, when the most emotional scene was not even in CG. A work print moved me, a fact most feature's wasting celluoid today are lacking.Come Friday the second of November, you will enter the theater smiling and leave with an even larger grin. Enjoy Monstropolis folks. Enjoy the Yeti, I did. STOLID RHETORIC -
I'm anxious to hear a real review.

Why is it that all positive reviews have to be from a studio pla
by anita_blake
Just asking, that's all. No one here has anything nice to say about anything that doesn't come from some shit art house director that no ones gives a damn about or some foreign flick that all of two people will actually pay to see. You people disgust me with your damn negativity!
-
I'm going to the biggest screen around just to see the trailer. I hope Monsters Inc. is good I guess.
-
How sneaky! Hey, if I saw this film last night, and reviewed it, spelling and punctuation intact... maybe I'D be branded a studio plant too! Now, if the great Famous Players Paramount theatre on John and Richmond can digitally screen Final Fantasy, I'm pretty damn sure they can do it for Monsters Inc. I'm also pretty damn sure about friggin' Sold Out signs too. I am grateful, however, for the fact that my Episode I trailer experience was before Big Willy's 'Enemy of The State'.

Monsters, Inc. is a terrible movie. It's unfunny and panders to the audience. Walt Disney is the worst bunch of money-grubbing bastards ever.
But on another note, "K-PAX" (which everyone has been quick to dis) was incredible. I thought it had some cheesy parts, but on the whole, it was wicked. -

Peter Menzies Jr. will take over the DOP job for Spiderman in it's remaining 5 week shoot.
I'm a film student in Australia where Peter Menzies Jr's father teaches Cinematography. I overheard it in a cell phone conversation between him and his son today. Oh and I cant wait for Monsters Inc. -
but i'm not all that interested in this one....to me, it's a 'renter' at best....Harry Potter and LOTR on the other hand are going to get my hard earned money at least a couple of times over....and hello to essemtee....'John and Richmond you say?"...ahh...a fellow Torontonian!...cheers!

I don't mind somebody calling me a Moron, and yes, its SULLY not SCULLY, but I didn't have a friggin press kit to use as a reference. ANYWAY, call me what you will but don't call me a damn STUDIO PLANT. I really thought the movie was that good and my spelling has nothing to do with it. Everybody has been comparing Potter to Rings and they should have compared Potter to Monsters. They are closer together in release dates and aimed at the same audience. I am no Disney guy, but I do enjoy the Pixar catalog and all your collective bitching can't take away the magic of the movie. Deal with it, and watch it blow up your local movie house.
And, if you have paid attention, I have been here a long, long time. For the record, I don't live in San Diego, I just travel there for comic book conventions. -
Comments...
Lord of the Rings --- I don't get it, to be honest. Ian McKellan in a bad fake beard.
Monsters, Inc. --- I just can't see how they can surpass TS2.
Harry Potter --- It's sad, Radcliffe is simply another studio orphan. "He killed the original Alfalfa!"
Episode II --- It will most assuredly be amazing in parts, a letdown in others. I still like Episode I, though.
As always, I remain... a realist. -
Who cares about Monsters? I want to see the TRAILER!

As long as you bring up "NO SONGS" in Monsters, Inc., I gotta say that the only things wrong with Shrek were the SONGS. So what if the characters themselves didn't break into song (much), and they intentionally made fun of movies where that does happen. But the way they threw in so much alterna-pop of the moment (plus the depressing rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Alleluia" [THERE'S a paradoxical song title for you]) was the weakest part of the movie. And pretty ironic. And hang in there, MrCere. I don't know why some people think anyone who loves a movie is automatically a "studio whore". Maybe because those same people hate everything...?
-
I think it is a given that both Shrek and Monsters Inc. will be nomiated for this new academy award. I cannot wait to see Monsters Inc so I can see who will have the edge in that Oscar categoy. Final Fantasy could get nominated too and so could Atlantis, but neither have a chance in fucking hell to win! I know ho wthe reviewer feels. I too love Dreamworks but I have spot in my heart for Pixar because they have gone 3 for 3 when it comes to giving us amazing films. I'm sure now they will be going 4 for 4.
-
I'm psyched to hear such a good review of Monsters, Inc. I have been waiting for this one for a while...in fact, I scored some tix to the prescreening here tomorrow night...I'll be back to give you guys my thoughts Friday am!
-
That obnoxious one eyed monster from hell has nothing on Frodo.. Frodo and Gandalf are the kings baby, they rule the silver screen along with the Jabba like Peter Jackson they will drool onto you and your pathetic Pixar crapola.. Bilbo Baggins and an Aerosmith daughter in a jar baby! LORT is Rocking the Casbaa and the Cantina and Han never shot first ya Ewokian Pimps!

Seems the theme nowadays is everyone is considered a plant. Could it be that 9-11 has made everyone paranoid? Ahh, how I long for the days of arguing that Lucas is a racist and how Harry is fat! Gimme something good to work with, people. BTW, is BUZZ still hanging around here?
-
Seriously, I don't know about the rest of you but I'm pretty fucking tired of movies nowadays. I still go see them but even the one's that are supposed to be half way decent seem to fall flat. Nothing dazzles or moves us anymore. Now along comes Pixar. Thank God. All you people shouting plant, go to hell. I think this guy is on the level. And I do believe that starting this Friday we, the audience, are FINALLY going to see some movies that have us saying "holy shit that was good. When's the next showing?" It's been such a long time since I've been able to say that. I've also noticed something in the past few weeks. Every talk back, whether it be related or not, as some mention of Harry Potter or LOTR. I think I know why. We here in America need a few movies to transport us someplace us. We need to have that sense of overwhelming fun and fantasy again. I think it's about time that we all hang up our "jaded cynic" hats and just have fun. I can't wait for Friday.

by terry_1978
If anything, it should make us realize how crazy everyone is getting over fear of going outside, opening mail, or anything in general. Some reviewers said people may be uneasy about watching the scenes, but it'll probably be useful in the long run.

Scored some tickets to a screening of Monsters, Inc. tonight and it was fuckin incredible! I can't even begin to describe how cool the animation is in the movie - Pixar has outdone themselves yet again. I couldn't believe how real everything looks...even the hair on little Boo's head. I'm in utter amazement....
