HERC Reviews ANDROMEDA 2.4!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Andromeda 2.4 FAQ
What’s it called?
“Pitiless As the Sun.”
Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to former “Xena” supervising producer Emily Skopov, whom one hears has already moved on to “Farscape.”
When does it air?
We’re told most markets will debut it today, Saturday, Oct. 27.
What does TV Guide say?
“Trance goes missing just as an onboard traitor puts the Andromeda at risk for being attacked by an alien race preying upon cargo ships.”
What is TV Guide not telling us?
We finally get some solid clues with regard to enigmatic superhottie catgirl Trance Gemini.
Isn’t this the episode with Cancer Man?
“X-Files” vet William B. Davis plays Trance’s alien interrogator.
Any surprises?
Following the season-ending Magog attacks which totaled the Andromeda’s command center, the bridge set has been redesigned – and is now way cooler. Also, though much of Earth history has been muddied in the chaos of the last 300 years, Harper has a working knowledge of the 1977 Disney fantasy “Freaky Friday.”
Do “Andromeda” characters continue to use terms like “This sucks!” “I rule!” and “Butt-kickingly amazing”?
They do.
How is Trance trapped?
Her captors, the Anari, suggest that having an outworlder like Trance visit might help the locals overcome their long-held xenophobia. Capt. Hunt agrees because he wants Trance to spy on the shadowy Anari.
What do the Anari want from Trance? (HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD!)
15 years ago, someone who looked like the male version of Trance caused a civil war that wiped out half the Anari race, and then disappeared. The Anari want info on this legendary menace, and they also want to know how to kill a member of Trance’s race. (Keep in mind that Trance’s race remains a mystery even to her crewmates).
Did this destructive male version of Trance use Jedi mind tricks to foster this civil war, or did he do something more physical?
The Anari do not reveal how Gemini’s twin caused the war.
But surely they don’t think Trance is like her counterpart! She’s so cute and perky!
The interrogator describes Gemini’s twin as “Almost childlike, playful. He had an innocence that was so inviting. It was the perfect disguise. No one was capable of predicting the level of chaos and destruction he was capable of.”
What’s the biggest thing we learn about Trance?
Anari scans of Trance “are unable to detect anything remotely like life signs as we know them.” She can also effortlessly escape restraints, and seems resistant to all attempts to kill and/or torture her.
Is Trance a robot, like Rommie?
At one point, Trance claims that she is “fake” and not a product of evolution. But how much truth is there to anything she says, we wonder.
What’s with the promos where we see hundreds of galaxies in Trance’s left eye?
This isn’t explained explicitly, but the general impression one gets is that Trance comes from a shockingly old and powerful race. “If my kind wanted to destroy you, it would take a lot less than a full scale assault,” she says at one point. “I do not know who that was, or what he wanted, but most likely he was just bored. When you have seen and done as much as we have, the universe starts to seem a little small and stagnant, so you learn to make your own fun.”
Is Harper still impregnated with deadly Magog fetuses – Magog fetuses which will eat him alive the minute his Magog-repression drugs cease to be effective? We ask because he seemed almost cheerful during that heist episode last week.
Harper still has the Magog larvae cuddling his heart and liver; he’s just trying to have a positive attitude.
What’s good?
Adorable Laura Bertram, who plays Trance, demonstrates again that she can carry the show when given an opportunity. Trance’s mix of truth and lies facinates. The squid-like Pyreans (not to be confused with the Pyleans, who menaced Cordelia and Fred on “Angel” last season) are a nice change from the endless parade of humanoids. And Trance’s story dovetails most gracefully with the concurrent shipboard story.
What’s no so good?
Throughout the episode, Harper repeatedly squanders opportunities to reference both “The North Avenue Irregulars” and “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo.”

Shit like Andromeda gets reviewed but zero Farscape? Farscape is the best SciFi ever. It just got renewed for season 4 and 5, get some coverage AintitCool.
-
... but where are Link Hogthrob and Miss Piggy?!?
-
That the reviewers already have a lot on their plate and just don't wanna review another show?
I agree Farscape is a great show. Probably the best SciFi on TV right now.
Could it also be that if you got off your ass and showed that you can consistantly supply reviews of Farscape aintitcool might put you on? Why are so many people wasting talk back space to review the reviews these days? If you don't like, don't read. Or god forbid offer some useful feedback in a positive way. Shit, shut up or get off the pot.
Good point about there not being any new shows for a while so what would they have to review? heh heh
-
I may be mistaken, but wasn't this the same series that had a spacecraft *towed out of a black hole*? If that's "hard science" what's fantasy?
-
First, I'm a fan of both shows for completely different reasons. Farscape really holds my attention with it's characters and sets and ongoing threads. Andromeda entertains me with the actors and the encapsulated plots. I think they're both good, REALLY good but for completely different reasons. The bottom line for me is if had to choose one I'd pick Farscape because I think the writers have a little better idea what they want to do in the long run and there isn't a s developed of an arc on Andromeda. However, Laura Bertram is absolutely lovely and I'd have a tough time giving up her and her character's tail. Not tail like rear but..... Oh hell, you know what I mean. Not that her rear is bad, it's good. I just.... forget it. Zubalove Out!

I know it's a bit of a budget production... but It's time the makers of Andromeda , put up some cash ,for decent make-up.In this day and age , that six foot fruit bat guy , just isn't acceptable. In his fur fabric pyjamas and rubbery mask ,he looks like something from Lost in Space! When packs of Magog are running around ..It feels like I'm watching Blakes 7.Only that guy who looked like a rat in a velvit coat and wig was worse!I'm not the worlds biggest farscape fan , but at least that show has some impressive character make up design.
-
I never did understand why only the pilot gets to sick down while everyone got to stand around having to hold onto things to keep from falling to the floor. That's gotta be murder on the feet! Oh, and on the fellow who claims Andromeda is "based on hard sciene" -- LMAO. Isn't this the show that had a ship PULL another ship out of a BLACK HOLE with TOW CABLES???? LMAO.
-
No, worse, the pilot station is now some sort of stand-up contraption. Not at all the most practical thing, especially when someone is slipstreaming often, which they claim to be pretty tiring.
The new set looks cool, but lacks a bit of sense for practical design. Contrast that with alleged interest naval engineers had with the bridge on TOS, which was explicitly designed to appear practical and ergonomic (its circular design allows a good view of every station, etc). The split screen foward display is an improvement though. -
At first this bothered me, but when you realize that the alternative is inevitably corny made-up slang, it's quite tolerable (at least more tolerable than that alternative). It sure beats Star Trek where it seems that any slang or vernacular was thoroughly beaten out of the English language, or at least is suppressed for the sake of professionalism in Starfleet. The idea in Andromeda is to appear much more informal, which means using slang, and that only really works if the slang is contemporary, otherwise it just sounds dated or phony. Same goes for Harper's "ancient" cultural references to things that should have been long forgotten. Made up ones would just seem phony, and lack the impact that comes with knowing what he's talking about
-
Wait for next weeks show. I got it off the bird Thursday and there is much to see of Trance Gemini's tail.
Faker -
Thanks to the fellow who let me in on Andromeda's lack of seating. What's THAT about? :) -- To the Afrosheen fellow, nice dancing around, dude, but it's obvious you screwed the pooch and is now trying to cover for it. Andromeda is the show that's so "far out" from real science that it's not even funny. Oh, and please, don't blame "limited budget" on the bad designs. The whole show is just NOT that imaginative, let's just admit it. Character designs are Godawful and acting is even worst. Holy cow, where did they get these guys, from a bake sale?
-
I hated the first season, but I still caught every episode, mostly because the quality of weekend science fiction is... well, piss poor. Now, the show is still cheesy as hell, most of the makeup and special effects (other than the shots of the various ships) look like they were done in someone's garage over a long, boring weekend, but with the introduction of the Magog arc, and the (semi-)answers about Trances past, I'm starting to enjoy the show. Granted, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but at least now I'm willing to admit it.
-
I must admit, the Magawg (sp?) do look a little on the cheap side. That was hilarious, whoever posted that above.
I watch Andromeda like I watch V.I.P. - if it's on, and I'm sitting in front of the tv, I'll watch it. There's still something missing I think, but I couldn't tell you what. At least it's a trillion times better than EARTH:Final Conflict.. that show always seems to be on at gawd awful hours and it's SOOO boring... Or my personal fave, that fake-o highlander/buffy show with the guy from Renegade... Lamas?
***Sorry I got of the subject***
go andromeda go! -
i hate to get into convention geek mode *ie: those who know WAY to much about sci-fi characters & irrelevant facts* but that wasn't cancer man, that was cigarete smoking man in this andromeda eppy.
cancer man is the guy who ate malignant tumors on the x-files, is now on e.r.,
if you are gonna be a sci-fi geek, you gotta get the facts straight herc :)
