JUDGE DREDD coming back for a double helping at a screen near you'
Hey folks, Harry here... A couple of days ago we received a story about a possible director's super cut of JUDGE DREDD on DVD, but I've been hearing word that that may indeed be false... Still waiting for definitive word, but today Variety is telling us that there is movement to make a back to back JUDGE DREDD series of films. To kick off the franchise again.
This does not mean Stallone will be back. HOWEVER, if he did come back, I would hope we would be seeing a far better script and zero comedy relief, which was just terrible in the original. Variety said:
"The first picture under 2000 AD's pact with independent producer Shoreline
Entertainment will be "Judge Dredd: Dredd Reckoning."
The project, which will see the hero losing confidence in the corrupt legal
system, will be shot back-to-back with the second picture under the deal,
"Judge Dredd: Possession," in which Dredd has to face up to the moral
dilemma of having to kill his partner when she is possessed by Judge Death.
"We are reinventing the franchise by taking it back to the edge and style of
the original comicbook," said Shoreline principal Morris Ruskin, who will
serve as a producer. "If we could get a good strong Judge Death story out of this... that would kick ass like hell. Please get great folks to write these and direct them. No shortcuts. I love the comics. For about two years I wore the little DREDD shield pin on a levi jacket of mine... Big nut for it, but that movie hit me like a bad case of the liquid hersheys. And that was no fun!

Embarrassed to be first, I have to say this is not a very good idea. Actually, it sucks.
-
pardon my french, but they would be better off burning money than to waste it on that franchise....Why don't they instead remake Cutthroat Island and follow it with a sequel to Town and Country?
-
Joy of Joys, Dredd may yet wriggle free from Stallone's grasp as his career continues into freefall.
Judge Dredd was always and remains one of the most subversive and hard ass characters ever (excluding the great Marshal Law). This was the man who was bred to dispense the Law, who lives in Rowdy Yates Block (attaboy Clint) and convicts parents who don't rat on their kids!
The whole 2000ad stable recently was bought by Rebellion games, who had brought us Aliens vs Predator, so I can only assume that the new management has begun agressively marketing their properties. The comic has more then 25 years on the clock, with on average 5 strips per week, by some of the UK and Irelands best writers and artists- Moore, Ennis, Bisley, Gibbons, Dillion and more besides have gotten their start there. thats a deep well of ideas to draw upon. I only pray that lame ass "I knew you'd say that" is dispensed with.
Btw, if you thought you saw Dredd before and reckoned it was a bit unoriginal- bear in mind that the writers of both RoboCop and Demolition Man had done variously done treatments of the character and aknowledged his influence...tsk -
More of Judge Dredd? Who cares to really see this?! The movie blew. The comic blows. And even though Harry says the director of the film got screwed with making the film, I believe the only way this idea would have been good for a movie is if it stayed as an idea for a movie - nothing more. Please, Hollywood, isn't there anyone original working in your city any more with a good story?
-
But I need a free pop-up killer d/l type thing...I've seen them talk about in these talk-backs before and I figured i might as well ask...thanks...
Oh, and if they do it right the new Dredd movies could actually be pretty good... -
Mmmmm.....Hershey's.

Dredd was very much based on Dirty Harry,Robocop was very much a futiristic Dirty Harry.Soo he came the closest to being Dredd{The *anything to say to the kids , Robo?* ...*Yes , Stay outta trouble!* bit was exactly the right note. However weller had our sympathy because he was horribly killed and turned into a , brutal cop.Dredd on the other hand likes it that way. He's as much a brute and a bully as a anti heo.Unless they show Mega city one, taking some real chaos{the Robot wars or The Dark Judges, unleashing hell} so that Dredd up the front, saving civilians and losing judges all around him. Then the whole film comes across as the flawed attempt to make viewers root for a fascist. What I don't want to see is more endless scenes in the Judge Council chamber. That first movie was chock full of 'em.It couldn't have been more tedious.Plus they took the whole deal wayyy too seriously. Finally who's going to play Dredd? We don't want Stallone back again, in his gold cod piece and designer spandex catsuit! He needs to be like that medic in saving Private Ryan. The one whos going along the line of wounded on the beach , saying *low priority*...*He's gone* etc.Hech even the police force in the Fith element seemed more like Judges , than the bunch of spandex covered ponces from Stallones movie.
-
While their at it why not make a sequel and a prequel to the Streetfighter movie. Jeez...See this is what pisses me off. Their are people out there that bust their asses trying to get their ORIGINAL screenplays/projects of the ground and once AGAIN they are planning to make a flick no one asked for as far as i know. Now since they they are going to make it any way...PLEASE do it without Stallone. I'd rather see this turned in to an animated movie. With the team that made the excellent "Blood-The last Vampire" helming the pic, it would be great. Now this could work but for now all the odds are against this project. On the other hand i do Think that Judge Dredd deserves a second chance. DO it GOOD this time.

You've got to be f***ing kidding me. This has all the potential of those steaming-turd-made-for-cable RoboCop movies made last year. Meanwhile, the WATCHMEN project will probably never see the light of day. Figures.

The first movie was really good. I get so pissed when I hear people put that movie down. It's always the same thing. "We weren't supposed to see his face". oh, who the fuck cares? So we saw his face. BIG DEAL!! That movie was GREAT. It was really true to the comics other then the fact that you saw his face. Stop whining about it. It was good. People (comics fans especially) always have to jump on something and find a reason to hate it. I know a guy who manages a comic book store who hated X-Men because Wolverine's claws came out from between his knuckles instaed of out the back of his hand like in the comics. I say quit the STUPID nitpicking and give shit to the movies that deserve it like The Others and Jeepers Creepers. Now THOSE movies were shit!
-
I actually enjoyed the movie. I never read much of the comics. But what I did read was OK. I thought the movie was entertaining and not bad as post apocalypse sci-fi. The SFX were not bad either. But then, I also liked Waterworld, so what the heck do I know. Flame away...
-
This could be good news. Rebellion have really pulled out the stops to reaffirm 2000ad as the UK's, nay the galaxy's greatest comic. The Dredd character is capable of so much more than that lousy Stallone offering - Look at the recent Doomsday for Dredd / Mega City One TPB's for a hint of what could be. Not sure about the DVD special edition of the original flick though...
-
A Judge Dredd movie just won't be the same without him! ;)

THAN I'd know they're on the right track. You know who might be a decent Dredd? Clancy Brown. But I guess he ain't a BIG H-town name therefore won't be on the list.
-
C'mon, find me one Dredd fan who wouldn't camp out to see that.
-
IF this is actually treated like a Judge Dredd movie, instead of a Stallone movie like the first one was, then this has the potential to kick seven kinds of ass. IF this is made, I hope that the writer(s) actually come up with somthing coherent and rational, or in the case of the Dark Judges, rational in it's irrationality. As for who should play Joe Dredd, I also think Clancy Brown is a good choice, but for some reason, I want to see Sean Bean take on the roll. "The crime iss life... the ssentence iss death."
-
A bit off topic, but has anyone seen Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon's movie "Phoenix"? A fantastic little crime flick about a degenerate gambler who also happens to be a corrupt cop. GREAT cast: Ray Liotta, Anjelica Huston, Anthony LaPaglia, Daniel Baldwin, Brittney Murphy, Giancarlo Esposito, and the one and only Piven. It's really, really good and convinced me that Cannon can direct when unencumbered by Stallone or the running and screaming stylings of Jenniffer Love Hewitt (the poor bastard also directed "I Still Know, etc.") I only mention it because its one of my favorites and got zero press and went direct to video and cable. If you haven't seen it, check it out.
-
They could build the greatest Sci-Fi flick ever and no one would know because of piece of crap that Stallone put out. Dredd is forever tainted by the first movie. Don't even bother with a second one unless you are going to ANIMATION. Anything live action will be too much of a painful reminder to us shell-shocked folks who saw the first one. We'll be getting flashbacks from the commercials.
-
Sorry about that...My freiend will have a seizure when I tell him. He loved the Stallone version though. I'm setting it to Incendiary.
-
Ok...ok...the first film was like a pretty girl with the personality of a walnut - nice to look at but no character. Yes, its an uphill struggle given the first film, yes convincing a comic-literate public that all should be forgiven...BUUUUUUT, if they script it right - start with the Dark Judges story for heavens sake! - and cast it with actors (Michael Ironside? great idea. How about Ron Perlman?) it could be brilliant.

I think a lot are missing the fact that they aren't remaking
by daredevil
If the first movie version of Robin Hood or Dracula had sucked, would we complain when someone made another movie version? No, because it would be someone taking the source material and making a completely new movie that has nothing to do with the other one. Personally, I'm glad to see someone making a different version of Judge Dredd. I'm so glad that they are making another Ocean's Eleven. Why? Because the first one had such a cool concept, but was so bad. I'd also like to see a new Punisher and Captain America because the last ones that were made were pretty poor imitations of the comic books. Same with Judge Dredd, considering they took the names, some of the situations, and the look of the comic and then made a straight up action movie with a little standard comedy relief. Judge Dredd should have no overt comedy, just the underlying satire and social commentary. Paul Verhoeven has been pretty good at doing those style of social parody sci-fi movies like Robo Cop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers (the best part of ST is the hilarious media propoganda and commercials.)********************************************I agree with what someone else said, Clancy Brown (Kurgan from Highlander) would make the perfect Dredd, since Eastwood is too old to play the part now. (Personally, I didn't mind Stallone in the part, I just think that sticking him in another one would associate it too much with his version.)
-
Just to clear this up in advance: I'm a regular 2000AD reader and a huge fan of the comicbook Dredd. I also loath and despise the Stallone flick for the witless, clueless mess it was. Is the world ready for another Dredd flick? I dunno - they'd have to jetison everything that was wrong with the last attempt, so that basically means starting from scratch. No Stallone, no Rob-'Effin- Schneider [sp?], no "Ah Nude Sayat" and a story that actually makes some kind of sense.
Oh, and spare us the Versace spandex and cod-pieces too. That was *so* 1994.
Still, it could work if they don't compromise on the satire and black humour that makes his comic exploits so distinctive. Like one of the other Talkbackers, I suspect that this would work better as either an animated film or a TV series - bearing in mind the lush production values on shows like Farscape, that last notion isn't quite as outlandish as it once might have been.

If this movie does get off the ground, get the story written by Garth Ennis or Alan Moore. What more would attract fanboys to a theater (let's sweep Robocop 2 under a rug ,though it was kinda cool). In fact, I have to agree that Vin Diesel might actually make a great Dredd. What do ya think?
-
it never ceases to amaze me how stallone gets ripped on. you guys simply don't know what you're talking about. when stallone signed on, he thought that he would be making a hard-edged, satirical film - something akin to the comics he had read and enjoyed. a week or two into shooting, he approached one of the producers and said, "Don't you think this kind of funny?"
the producer replied, "Well, it looks good." stallone is very willing to take risks, the money-men are not. -
Ah, laddies, gather 'round and I'll regale you with useless memories. I only had a chance to buy a couple of Dredd comics from the cheapo comic bins over the years. To this day, I still have and intermittantly re-read this one Dredd comic entitled "Chopper" or something, about this illegal skysurfing contest. Not very much Dredd in the actual story. And know what? I rate that particular issue as one of the best comics I have ever read. Fantastic, suspenseful story and art that wasn't about Dredd at all.
I couldn't wait to get my hand on another Dredd comic, and the next one I read had Judge Death in it. What a let down.
Presuming my first issue was an abberation, and my second Dredd comic was the norm, I don't look very forward to movies that get "back to the edge and style of the original comic book." -
I say to bring back Stallone to play Judge Dredd. He did a fine job in the lackluster Disney version directed by HACK master Danny Cannon. Stallone should play a older grissled Judge Dredd. This time he doesn't have to be clean shaven. Get a director that can handle the character and violence...namely Paul Verhoeven. The guy even made Robocop which was half based off the Judge Dredd character. Stallone and Verhoeven would equal magic. Danny Cannon was the real person that destroyed the first DREDD movie.
-
I always thought it was blasphemous that they didn't get the song "I Am the Law" by Anthrax (the band) for the soundtrack to the first Dredd movie. So perfect...
Anthrax
I Am The Law
Fifteen years in the academy
He was like no cadet they'd ever seen
A man so hard, his veins bleed ice
And when he speaks he never says it twice
They call him Judge, his last name is Dredd
So break the law, and you wind up dead
Truth and justice are what he's fighting for
Judge Dredd the man, he is the law
DROKK IT!
With gun and bike he rules the streets
And every perp he meets will taste defeat
Not even Death can overcome his might
Cause Dredd and Anderson, they won the fight
When the Sov's started the Apocalypse war
Mega-City was bombed to the floor
Dredd resisted, and the judges fought back
Crushed the Sov's with their counter-attack
DROKK IT!
Respect the badge - he earned it with his blood
Fear the gun - your sentence may be death because...
I AM THE LAW!
And you won't fuck around no more - I AM THE LAW
I judge the rich, I judge the poor - I AM THE LAW
Commit a crime I'll lock the door - I AM THE LAW
Because in Mega-City... I AM THE LAW
In the cursed earth where mutants dwell
There is no law, just a living hell
Anarchy and chaos as the blood runs red
But this would change if it was up to Dredd
The book of law is the bible to him
And any crime committed is a sin
He keeps the peace with his law-giver
Judge, jury, and executioner
DROKK IT!
CRIME - The ultimate sin
Your iso-cube is waiting when he brings you in
LAW - It's what he stands for
Crime's his only enemy and he's going to war -

by abking
Someone posted this under the other Dredd topic so I cut and pasted it here for everyone to read and know the truth. Here it is: ***Regarding Paramount SE

The long post above was most interesting...I knew some of the facts , but not all.It goes a long way to explaining , just why the Dredd movie ended up , such torture to sit thru. Not sure about any of the choices for Dredd other talkbackers have mentioned.Clancy Browns a mean looking dude , but a bit too bulky really{Dredd was really sinewy in some stories}Michael ironside is an interesting choice..I'd never have considered him.Vin Diesals built for the part..but hes got a lispy voice and comes across as slow , rather than a gruff ,fast thinking type. How about Christopher Walken! It sounds mad, but the guy looks like, hes the result of a genetic experiment, and seems pretty cold.As for the earlier post that commented that , fanboys always moan about something..In this case Dredd showing his face.Well that was a whole differant ball game.. from Wolverines claws moving two inches. Not knowing what Dredd looks like, is part of the characters whole mythos Theyve kept that up since day one of the comic. For the movie to just piss that away in seconds ,{they couldn't even waite till Dredd was on trial to remove the mask}was one of the many reasons that film tanked. For some reason the makers of that pile, seemed to think that Dredd's {complaining!}fan base, were totally unimportent...and that there was a huge audiance beyond that , who needed the film tailored to them.In essence they pissed off the fans..and no one else was interested anyway. It was hard to see who they were making that film for. Finally a Dredd film done right ,needn't cost that much a few shots of mega city and off he goes into the cursed Earth to track down Fink Angel or Chicken Head.Think mad Max 2 with more bikes and gunnplay.
-
Not the suck ass crap with Stallone, but the original comic. Was tailor made for a younger Eastwood, but maybe they didn't have the effects abilty then, but hey, Mad Max was cool. Anyone notice a resemblence between a certain Mad Max and Dredd in the cursed earth?
A new Dredd film with a good script based on original story lines (not Hollywood we gotta modify it otherwise the American public won't understand it shit), better costumes (leather ala Max, instead of girly spandex and gold cod pieces - what were they smokin when they dreamt that one up?) and a decent actor in the lead. Who said "Clancy Brown"? Excellent idea. -
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Never gonna happen!
-
That image used on the Brit poster for Mad Max2 of Max , battered and dusty with one eye closed , was just how Dredd Needs to be translated to film. Not shiny spandex and a gold posing pouch! The shoulder eagle and pad on Stallones costume , appeared to be held on ,by a big black bikini top in the movie?????!!

To who ever it was who said Dredd showing his face was no big de
by the shrunkenhead
Ofcourse its a frikin big deal if you had any idea of the Dredd mythology you halfwit, and its especially insulting to be presented with the dopey gurning mug of Sly Stallone. It's the same bursting of the balloon that would occur if Yoda whipped his todger out and started moonwalking around the Jedi Council chamber to the tune of Whitney Hustons 'I will always love you'. It's fucked up and has blatant disregard for the integrity of the source,so don't get me started. Oh you have. Shit. Anyway the only way you're gonna see a decent Dredd is to CGI him, jettison any hint of a love interest and emphasise that the fact that he'd shop his Grandmother for farting (if he had one).
-
I don't think the box office of X-Men warranted this kind of barrel scrapping. Then again, I think there's an Ant-Man movie in development. I see it now, Bruce Campbell IS Quasar.
-
Which there is...alot of potential with the story and the characters...but drop stallone and find someone who is actually a good actor and bump up some of the stuff that was cool in the first one and there we go! I can hope cant I?
-
I mean come on, they totally made the first movie!
-
Okay, I know I'm not a Dredd fan and I don't care if they try for another movie or not, but I loved the evil robot in that last movie and I thought it sucked big time that it did nothing but look mean! Damn that it never spoke with James Earl Jones power! Even though it was little more than a Disney ride feature, it goes up in my Evil Giant Robots hall of fame right next to Robocop 2 and Maximillion. Sure those came from bad bad movies, but how many good movie have evil giant robots?
-
make Rogue Trooper and Strontium Dog too, as long as they use original story plots.
-
Someone mentioned him up above, and I just wanna know-- How come no one's ever even kicked around the idea of adapting THAT comic? I'm talking about the original mini-series, not all the crap with Pinhead and whatnot that came after. As a revisionist superhero epic, I'd say it ranks right up there with The Dark Knight and Watchmen. Sure, it would be prohibitively expensive, has zero name recognition, and the built-in fan base consists solely of Judge Giant and me, but it could kick the most serious kind of ass.
-
Yeah , he was pretty cool.It was sad though , that they obviously couldn't think of a way to make him walk .That shot of him fighting judges in the alley , was crying out for a bit of Phil Tippet magic! The only other good thing in the film was Mean Machine>They should have ditched Fergie and had Mean, run round with Dredd{In some sort of Saving Pa and the boys related truce}You could then, have had a scene of mean in hand to hand combat with the ABC robot!...Im making this up as I go and it already sounds better ,than the real shit that was served up.Oh and if any future movie feature judge Anderson..it should be Renee Zeelweger.I dont think shes right for the part ,I just want to see her ,in a leather judges outfit.

Keep his helmet on, hire Clancy Brown tp play Dredd and Gilbert
by monkey_king
Clancy Brown would be great as Dredd. He was great as the Kurgen and in the films Buckaroo Banzai and the TV(although short-lived)series EARTH 2. Give him something to do other than voice work. Gottfried would be great as Death. Wonder who could play Psi Judge Anderson. The list of 'flighty' yet 'strong and hot' starlets goes for miles when attempting top cast this role.
-
As much as I'd like to see a Dredd film done properly, I'd like to see an ABC Warriors film even more! Do it CG so you can do really cool robots (can't think of any other way you could do Mongrol or Mek-Quake anyway), and set it in the 'Black Hole' era so you can have Hammerstein being tormented, Joe being cool, Deadlock having his own sinister agenda, Blackblood betraying the team and Ro-Jaws eating shit (hey, it's what he does!). And none of Pat Mills' khaos-anarchy-Gaian earth mother horseshit that infected 2000AD like the clap either - let's have some war robots kicking ass! Spread the word!
-
Many users said Sly had a ridiculous costume, but I think it's different: Sly looks somewhat ridiculous!
Nevertheless the original movie had a few cool designs and some cool scenes, but that's not enough. A better movie would be welcome, but mediocrity like the first one is not what cinema needs. -
I think this could be great. Im sure you are all going to crucify me for this one, but I actually enjoyed the movie...OWW OWW NOT SO HARD...NOT THE FACE NOT THE FACE!! Ok...perhaps i should elaborate a bit. I enjoyed the movie for what it was and didnt look at it as JUDGE DREDD. It clearly wasnt JUDGE DREDD because JUDGE DREDD is a badass and Stallone...to date...is not. Except in Get Carter...he was pretty bad ass in that one. Anyway...even though it wasnt the real JUDGE DREDD, it was fun and I still watch it everytime its on TV...I MAY EVEN TAPE IT SOMEDAY...SO THERE!! I hope they do bring the franchise back to the bigscreen and make it more like the comic and make the REAL JUDGE DREDD. Play off the first one like it never happened if thats your preference. As for the JUDGE himself, how bout Russell Crowe eh??
-
Quaequam blag, that's an inspired casting choice! And it'd mean I wouldn't have to genetically regress Nick Nolte to the age of 35 to play Dredd. Which is nice. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out http://www.2000ADonline.com and open yur minds, Earthlets...
-
Fantastic news! Can't see it happening though. If they do it I want to see John Cleese as Dredd. Seriously.
-
An inspired choice! Who ever suggested it first should be hired immediately as a casting agent. I also like the notion of Ron Perlman playing the part - a real-life "Old Stoney-face" if ever there was one. DOC NOOKIE - Borderline - The Comics Magazine http://borderline.mediahall.co.uk

The best thing in the Dredd flic was the make up job on Mean Angel. The make was done by Chris Cunningham, who, as anyone who has seen an Aphex Twin video (Windowlicker, Come To Daddy) or the Bjork one (All Is Love)will realise that he is the man for the job. The bloke used to draw for the comic 2000ad for crying out loud and is probably chomping at the bit to correct the mistakes he saw the shower of twats around him make while filming the first Dredd flic. Oh yeah...and any new Dredd flic has got to have the following, proper bikes, walter the robot, Boing (tm), Psi Judge Anderson and the coolest Judge ever...Judge Omar (the haunting of sector house 9). Drokk!..right im all geeked out now.
