VANILLA SKY trailer in gorgeous Quicktime!

Published at:  Oct 10, 2001 1:46:08 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. I'm pretty nervous about VANILLA SKY right now. This is one of the films I'm absolutely most wanting to see this year. The types of film goers that read this site, and that went to the test screening for this film... Loved it, save for one fella.... However, I've heard that the test screenings did not go particularly great. This is where my nervousness is at unrest.

VANILLA SKY is not like the previous films in Cameron Crowe's film history. The source material is far darker and stranger and plain bizarre than any that he has worked with before. This isn't supposed to be an easy ride, a coast down a hill... This movie is supposed to challenge your brain... shake up your perceptions and leave you a bit dazed. This isn't a movie that everybody is supposed to 'get'.

PULP FICTION bombed like hell at its test screenings.... The cookie cutter audience didn't care for it, but it kicked ass for the rest of us. I've heard rumors that there is a lot of tweaking going on with the film, Cameron told me in an email that he's experimenting with different options right now... trying out different things, and ya have to trust his instincts... but then, this isn't a movie like those that he's done before.

This is his first film based on a pre-existing work, everything else he's done has originated completely from within that skull of his. This started in Alejandro Amenábar's skull. Cameron did rewrites to the script, but this could be his most tough film to finish as it might not feel as completely him as his previous work... Then again, he may be working to make the film more from him than Amenábar... which makes sense. But I find myself trying to imagine Frank Capra shooting an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Of course in history when different directors have stepped out of their own 'typical' body of work to make a film in a different genre... we've seen some remarkable work... Like when Howard Hawks made his science fiction film.... Or Robert Wise, who could make SOUND OF MUSIC, WEST SIDE STORY and at the same time do films like BORN TO KILL, DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and THE HAUNTING.

Like I said, I can't wait to see this film... because honestly I have no idea what the final film will be like... it is very much a work in motion at the moment. Here's the trailer...

This is not the trailer I was shown as a "test" over the weekend

    by maxwelll demon

Thanks so much for the lambasting on the other "Vanilla Sky" talkback people. For the record, I DO NOT prefer tell-all trailers in the mold of "The General's Daughter." This new quicktime trailer is not the same piece of film I was shown by the testing center "droogs" this past weekend. The version I saw literally lasted 30 seconds. It began with the eye opening, progressed instantaneously through the Cruise/Cruz stroll through an autumnal Central Park and then dive-bombed kinetically into a series of blipvert "action" shots - including the rolling car accident and the skidding stop of Cruise atop some high-rise. The spot I saw literally looked and felt like a late marketing campaign shorthand television ad - like a spot you'd drop into the commercial breaks during some MTV award show. In the spot I saw, there was zero attempt to explain or hint at the plot - it merely showed lots of shots of the actors faces and lots of zoom-zoom, crash-em-up action shots. This quicktime trailer is infinitely more interesting. Although with the crowded Christmas season this year, I have my doubts as to whether "Vanilla Sky" will win over audiences.

    Hard to tell for me...

    by sk909

I am not sure what to make of this. I have never seen the original, so I do not know what to expect at all. Maybe I should go out and rent it, maybe I should not and make this Vanilla Sky my first experience with this story. My gut reaction is that this looks a little bit syrupy. Everyone says it is supposed to be dark, but sometimes I hate the whole 'open your eyes' thing when it is done in art. It can easily slip into condescension. I almost hate to say it, but... here goes...I think all of our eyes are wide-f--kin open right now, after 9-11. I hate to let that interfere with my enjoyment and opinion of a film, but, I said I would give my gut reaction, and that was my gut reaction. Sometimes it is easy to suppress everyday life in one's mind and just go with the flow, other times it is not so easy. Anyway, I hope it is cool, cause God knows we need a few cool movies to make up for all the lousy ones that have been out over the past two years.

Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes)

It appears that Crowe is sticking in terms of general structure of the film extremely close to the original film Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes). By having Pen

Songs in the "Vanilla Sky" trailer are as follows (in the order they are heard):
    1. Loop, "Mondo 77"
    2. Peter Gabriel, "Solsbury Hill"
    3. Chemical Brothers, "Where Do I Begin?"

    This movie isn't that great

    by egocentric

I mean, I saw Open Your Eyes a while ago, and it really didn't seem that great. In the genre of twist movies, this twist was a little lame. I think Cameron Crowe does great work, but this story isn't very smart.

MattHat, I want to shake your hand.

Man, it was killing me all day trying to figure out the song at the beginning. And lo and behold I have that Chemical Bros song too. Thanks, I really appreciate it!

    Too bad

    by arteras

Why such a copy of the original film ? It's the exact reproduction in details of "Open your yes", but Tom Cruise is not so good as Eduardo Noriega. Too bad.

I'm seeing double, and that ain't cool

    by willybobo123

I preface this by stating the only reason anyone should bother paying to view Vanilla Sky - to possibly support Alejandro Almenabar's career. Now onto the bad news: Cameron Crowe, ne Tom Cruise, has whored Open Your Eyes into a slick Hollywood hi-res photocopy. The entire trailer is Open Your Eyes, almost shot for shot. The only difference is the expensive locations and 'star power' on display. Tom Cruise will be ok in this as playing egocentric types is first nature to him - hell, it's what he does in real life. Cameron Diaz is glossy t and a who has rarely shown sparks of acting ability and the same will hold true in this role. No, correction. She'll find a way of making the scary psycho bitch from hell into the scary bad actress from hell. She'll have us in tears for sure, laughing all the way to the manager for a refund. Penelope Cruz, like her beau, is getting pretty good at playing herself in film over and over again. I can just hear the direction: Be cute. Be sexy. Be foreign. Be you!

The only things she brought to the original movie were doe eyes and a great rack. Here's to hoping they keep the topless shot in the pirated version. Oops. I mean remake. Same thing.

I'm dismayed that Almenabar so easily allowed them to rape his film, but the American dollars go a long way. Close your eyes for a second. Think about what you've just read, agree with me, and go out and rent Abre tus Ojos or pay to see The Others again. I'm sure you'll find that Mr. Cruise and Mr. Almenabar's material work best solely when the former is providing the financing for the latter as was the case in The Others.

    Yes !

    by arteras

OK with you, it's so ridiculous... and why should this "thing" have any interest ??? it's just plagiarism. So, don't go to see this film and, yes, rent the original !

abre los ojos is amenabar's worst film

    by cifra2

This film surely will be great. Tom Cruise is a far better actor than Noriega. D
