VANILLA SKY Trailer!!!

Published at:  Oct 08, 2001 10:28:19 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here.... I had been hearing all sorts of rumors about the VANILLA SKY trailer being online, from Atilla this DIVX version HERE also got this in from Ted.... Enjoy...

Hey Harry, how's it going? Ted Smith here. Just letting you know that on Friday, Entertainment Tonight showed the new trailer for VANILLA SKY ... and just, WOW. I had been waiting for this trailer ever since I saw "Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)" months ago and finally on Friday, there it was.

The trailer starts out with a Penelope Cruz voice over whispering "Open Your Eyes" and the first minute or so leads you to believe that you're watching a trailer for a romantic comedy. We get the “From the director Jerry Maguire” and then it goes on to set up Cruise's character as a rich, pretty boy womanizer type and shows how he then falls for Penelope Cruz's character with a few clips that are very "Crowe-ish" - with the cute, clever dialogue and all.

Then about halfway through, the mood of the trailer completely changes and has a real thriller/mystery feel to it. I wouldn't say it becomes "dark," but it's the total opposite from the first half. The last thirty seconds or so establish that there IS going to be some huge revelation at the end of the film, but does a great job in retaining themystery of it all. At the end of the trailer it says, “Forget what you know about…,” then dozens of words like “Fear, Love, Reality, etc…” rapidly flash on screen. It then cuts to Cruise’s character standing alone in an eerily empty Times Square with the words “… and Open Your Eyes” on screen. Cruise and Cruz both look great and Cameron Diaz seems as though she’ll play the psycho ex-girlfriend part perfectly. Although I only remember Jason Lee and Kurt Russell being in a couple of shots, they both look great as well. As for the music, I think there were three (maybe four) different songs/scores, but I had never heard any of them before. There’s one at the beginning that don’t really remember, then there’s your typical (and very Crowe-ish) cute romantic little song in the middle, then a faster, darker, more uptempoed song that fit the last half of this long, 3 minute + trailer.

If you have ever seen Open Your Eyes, Vanilla Sky looks to be almost identical to it... just even better. There were so many scene clips in the trailer that I recognized as being strait from Open Your Eyes, except they featured Tom Cruise and had a Cameron Crowe like feel to them. I read an article in Entertainment Weekly where Crowe said Open Your Eyes is “like the song our band really liked and we decided to cover it our own way.” For some reason I always took that as meaning they may have changed the story somewhat or changed a major plot point. But from this trailer, like I said, Vanilla Sky looks to follow the story of Open Your Eyes to a tee... And that’s not a bad thing, because a great movie just got even better. December 14 can’t come soon enough.

I was a test-screen candidate for this trailer this past weekend

    by maxwelll demon

And the "Vanilla Sky" trailer I saw was a complete jumble of non-sequitor images. You couldn't pull a coherent storyline out of the 30 second mess they showed me if you tried. And curiously enough, the entire focus of the "test-screen" was to gage my reaction to the recent WTC terrorist attacks. Every question seemed to center on whether or not I had a fear of going back into theaters or attending events with crowds. It all seemed rather knee-jerk and reactionary, like the studio was reeling to back-pedal on any film that might be deemed to have a violence quotient in it. The testing "droogs" seemed tentative to emphasize the action sequences of the film because of some faux national queasiness after the WTC incident. And the testing "droog" that questioned me was near-horrified when I said that you couldn't pay me to go see "Zoolander" - which for some strange reason was a film that factored into their questionnaires rather heavily. (I took it to mean Ben Stiller plays some nano-second cameo in "Vanilla Sky
.") Being a proud geek, I did ask that they emphasize Jason Lee's involvement with the film as he tends to have a stronger online fan base than the bland broad comedy of Ben Stiller. Mark my words, if they don't come up with a better trailer than the one that was foisted on me at the mall yesterday, "Vanilla Sky" will be a complete box-office dud.

    Gotta love those Marketting folks

    by sefsterj

Geez, I bet there is only 5 minutes of Jerry M-like material in the whole film and they manage to fill the entire first 2/3 of the trailer with it. Throw in some late 80's Gabriel tune and you have a whole market segment hooked. Regardless of the plot of the movie.

This is nearly a shot-by-shot remake. What is this, a Gus Van Z

    by lenny nero

Even the particular laser shot in the nightclub is intact. This does look really cool, however, SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!! despite the fact that, while they don't give away anything in the middle of the movie, the exact ending is given away! MOTHERFUCKERS!!! END SPOILER!!!!!!!! Cameron Crowe can do it, I know, even if the preview says "From the Director of Jerry Maguire" and not including the soon-to-be classic Almost Famous. What up, guys?

Someone finally used 'Where Do I Begin' in a trailer...

    by hell's cigarette

Leave it to the master of finding the perfect music to fit the mood of your film...Cameron Crowe! I know this is a remake, but it looks great nonetheless. Crowe hasn't made a film yet that I haven't loved...and this looks like his best yet. It's probably what Eyes Wide Shut should have been.

It ain't a remake of Citizen Kane

    by 33.3rpm

Why does everyone have a bug up their ass about Abre los Ojos being remade? Everyone acts like Cameron Crowe is doing some great injustice to Amenabar for remaking his movie. Amenabar sold his film to Tom Cruise to have it remade. Go to that web site. It's a Cruise/Wagner movie. AND Cruise/Wagner produced The Others for Amenabar. Doesn't sound like our Spanish friend is hurting to me. Go rent Oceans 11. There's your head-scratching move by a great director. I'll take Sammy, Dean and Frank's trail of booze and pussy anyday...

the opening music was used recently in an anti-drug commercial where a kid draws bunny ears and stuff on the guys trying to give him drugs.

    1st song

    by lebanese blonde

The first song in the trailer is "Mondo '77" by Looper from their album the Geometrid. Recommended.

    Holiday movie season

    by drevill8899

Yes I have to agree, this is a great holiday season coming up. But it would have been perfect if those bastards had the guts to release Gangs of New York, instead of postponing it until next year. Oh well, at least A Beautiful Mind is still getting limited release.

    Tom Cruise is an Idiot

Who can watch a Tom Cruise movie after he dumped sexy ice queen Nicole Kidman for a bad actress with a funny-looking nose?

    It looks good...

    by darth pixel

The last scene, where that dude jumps off the building, will look pretty cool... it is one of the images that stand out in the entire film (Open Your Eyes). Can't wait to see what they do with it... and Diaz should scare the hell out of womanizers across the country with that character.

doesn't look to great to me.

    by a goonie

it doesn't look HORRIBLE, but it sure as hell doesn't look too special. first off, i don't like Penelope. why anyone would leave Nicole to be with her blows my mind. and Tom looks like he's doing far from what he does best. nothing here seems to challenge the work he did in Eyes Wide Shut and magnolia. it may be only a trailer, but a trailer can tell a lot.

    From Average To Very Cool

    by saluki

First off to all those wondering why Cruise dumped Kidman. He didn't. It was the other way around, remember? Ya know, Tom being apart of Scientology (sp?) and Kidman being from an actual valid religion, well it just didn't work out when they had to decide what the kids were going to worship. But about the trailer. It started off like an average romantic fluff piece, but then my woman Diaz goes crazy and it just gets cooler and cooler from there. Can't wait.

I loved Open your Eyes, but the public may find this too wierd!!

    by mentallymariah

But you never know with todays shift shaping fickle audiences! I mean I predict Corky Ramano will bring home major $$$ while movies like this will be so so on the rader! It will definately be a good date movie for the young hip urban junkies! Open your Eyes was such a trippy movie, you never knew where it was headed next. If anything the publics curiosity on Tom and Penelope will spark their interest. Remember, Almost Famous was a superior movie directed by one of our all time coolest directors and look how much it did at the box office. So much luck this time around and I do hope the American Public will embrace unconventional fare...I am very curious to see how Dreamworks handles THE RING remake...I own that film and it ROCKS just like Open your Eyes..Please Hollywood, when you remake a trippy killer flick, make it even more tripper!!!!

Wait...Gangs of NY is delayed until 2002?

    by fitzy funk

Sorry to be off-topic, but can anyone verify this? Back to Vanilla Sky, this trailer does look interesting, despite my negative reaction to Cruise (who is strangely becoming more awkward as he ages - a case of a boy stuck in a errr, boy's body??) and Cruz (I know this is not PC, but she has a damned annoying foreign accent), and my exponentially negative reaction to them being on-screen together (it must be a "crooz" thang..). I really need to see the original here. I thought The Others was by far one of the best English language films of this year, and from what I hear that's only a sliver of what Alejandro pulls off in Open Your Eyes. And here's hoping producers soon start casting Jason Lee as a lead in this sort of movie, instead of the "best friend".

I just watched Open Your Eyes a half second ago....

    by castor777

And I have to say it really kicked some serious ass. But I have to agree with the past posters - I really don't see this type of film working for mainstream audiences. I was pretty much shocked how similar the scenes from the trailer in Vanilla Sky play along with Open Your Eyes - some are incredibly similar. This is probubly going to be like His Girl Friday and all the followers it had (including Front Page with Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau) in which they are so similar you begin to wonder why they even bothered other than to reach a larger audience. So, while I'm still intrigued to see Vanilla Sky, I feel kind of bad to know EXACTLY what will happen and probubly won't find it nearly as tense or as interesting as the rest of the audience. However, like I said before, I really don't think there are too many people out there that can handle a film like this.

    wow

    by coopcooper

this one whose plot i'm familiar with, but seeing the way its handled with what glimpses the trailer has provided has absolutely gripped me. i'm irresistably intrigued. the lead character's position i can somewhat relate to (having been in a supposedly detached relationship which ended up being a detriment to both our mental/emotional health) and meeting someone who is absolutely enthralling from the moment they step into your life (albeit a span of months in between), so, needless to say, the premise has my interest. and the film seems to take a turn into the subject matter i enjoy most in fiction - catastrophe of mind, madness, skewed reality. the outbursts of passion'd rage and the maniacal expressions dig the nails in. i anticipate this one.

    the weirdness of hollywood/people

    by coopcooper

now i know why a lot of actors keep their personal lives as gaurded as possible. its a shame that what goes on outside the screen can effect a moviegoers ability to accept an actor in a role. does it really matter? apparently it does. that's too bad.
