A Look At TRAINING DAY, and how it may not be coming soon..

Published at:  Sep 13, 2001 4:45:17 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Well we've been hearing really great things about TRAINING DAY, and specifically how wonderful Denzel Washington is as a cop that... well isn't exactly a good guy. Well, it seems that THAT may very well be why we won't be seeing this film soon. I just got word that Warner Brothers may be pulling TRAINING DAY from release because of how it portrays a Law Enforcement officer.... and how that might not be palpable or appropriate today... sigh... here's a review of the flick that came in from the Boston Film Festival....

Hey Harry,

Great work, keep it up. I really enjoy your site.

I guess I am the first to report from the Boston Film Festival which is
going on now through the weekend. I know it isn't as big as Toronto but we
do have Brian Cox, Armande Assanti, Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, Sissy Spacek,
Antoine Fuqua (more on him in a minute), and David Mamet (just to name a
few) showing up at some of their screenings. Unfortunately I will not be
able to see many of the films this year because I am too damn busy. However,
I was able to slip out this afternoon and see Training Day (taking advantage
of the stock market being closed).

I went in with some very mixed expectations. On the plus side, I had seen an
excellent trailer (which actually doesn't mean squat) and I am a big fan of
Ethan Hawke and Denzel. However, on the questionable side, I knew the movie
was directed by Fuqua who is best known for rap videos, Snoop and Dre were
in the film and I figured it was about time for Denzel and Hawke to collect
a big paycheck (as Affleck says in Jay and Silent Bob, you do an artsy film,
then you do a payday film).

Anyway, awesome film. I am sure you have reviewed the film already with a
synopsis, so I won't go through all that. Fuqua does a great job, the pacing
is perfect and with the music and camera angles he puts the audience in the
film. It makes me want to go and rent Bait. Performances are right on,
Denzel and Hawke are tremendous. Snoop and Dre do just fine in their roles.
Tom Beringer and Raymond Barry are in it long enough to tell an interesting
story about another use of peanut butter.
Denzel's Alonzo is a real bastard, however I could not help but relate his
preachings about his line of work to the situation America faces now. If you
have seen the film you will know what I mean. America needs to be the wolf.

Thanks Harry,

Purple Haze

I hope this has nothing to do with the tragedy in NY

    by flim

Because if it does, I don't really see how it relates. I have a great hole in my heart and soul for the people who lost their lives, but I think that eventually, it becomes evident that the studios are pulling these films to appear to be sympathetic. Now, I'm not saying that they aren't very sympathetic, like the rest of us, but the studios tend to go a little overboard at times...

    PS. Fuck Michael Bay.

Can't wait to see this film!

The trailer is great! With Bait, Fuqua already showed great improvement over Replacement Killers.

This thing has changed entertainment forever

    by terry_1978

Any tv show or movie that features cops, NYC, bombings, explosions, and the like are basically gonna remind people of this....we'll never be able to relax and watch anything ever again...I'm exaggerating, of course....but is it really that far off?

    Things fade...

    by theta

Life will go on, and slowly, Tuesday will lose its immediacy. I know that seems like an awful observation on the surface, but remember Oklahoma City? Afterward we thought we'd never see anything without being reminded of it. But we adjusted, and time, if it hasn't healed the wound, has obscured the pain.

    no respect for Jamie Foxx

    by frank black

I used to think Jamie Foxx showed promise as a comedic and dramatic actor, but after seeing his "performance" at the MTV music video awards I would much rather watch a "Backstreet Boys" five hour video than a second of this talentless, insensitive, ignorant, f**kwad. I am not a "Backstreet Boys" fan, but would rather support individuals that are working on bettering themselves and the world than a unintelligent, unfunny, hack who speaks thoughtlessly at the expense of others.

Jamie Foxx might represent an all time low in American pop culture. Not only was he not funny, but he was needlessly crude.

May he quickly disappear and may MTV have a little more foresight in choosing a host.

On second thought, what the hell was I even watching that crap for?

    God I am losing it.

    TRK

    by wesley snipes

Fuqua didn't go to film school and Replacement Killers was his first film. Who's surprised it wasn't that good? But Bait was better (less hyper, more focussed filmmaking, stronger story) and Training Day looks like it will continue his upward trend.

  • I think we (the movie going public) are intelligent enough to be able to distinguish between REALITY and FICTION. Denzel Washington is an ACTOR, playing a CHARACTER(singular) who is a bad cop, in a MOVIE. One ACTOR playing a (fictional) CHARACTER, is definitely, NOT a representation of the ENTIRE police department.

I for one have been really looking forward to this film. I'm a big Denzel fan. I don't see how anyone would be offended by it.

If Warner Bros. really wanted to show some consideration for the movie going public, they wouldn't have released A.I.

    Hollywood is so fucking stupid.

Training Day to be released October 5th?

    by jcknapier

According to reports, Warner Bros' Training Day will still be coming out relatively soon. The October 5th date makes sense as that's the date that Warner planned to open Collaterial Damage. Allegedly, the move is not due to content, but due to wanting to wait for the opportunity for proper pre-release TV and print promotion. Sounds sensible to me. Any word if anything more drastic than that has taken place?

Regarding the big explosion during the shooting of 'Bait".

    by wee willie

That accident was the fault of the FX team and not the director. \

As much as I think Fuqua is a deep hack...

    by smilin'jack ruby

...and yes, I've seen "Bait" (ugh) and "Replacement Killers" (double-ugh - you have to be a DEEP hack to make Chow Yun-Fat not look cool in a trenchcoat carrying a gun), I enjoyed "Training Day." No, it's not a Great Film, but I was entertained and thought Denzel gave a helluva perf. It makes "Bait" look like it was directed by a totally different fellow, actually.

    Bait was entertaining.

    by metsys

I thought Bait was a funny and action packed movie that should have done better at the box office. And this is coming from someone who really hated movies such as Blue Streak, Rush Hour 2 and anything else Jaimie Foxx has been in.

It is confirmed to be released on October 5th. I would say this has more to do with taking up the space left by the Arnie flick than it does the tragedy that occured on September 11th. I saw the film a couple of weeks back and there was nothing in it to lead me to that conclusion.

I think it's a pretty smart move by Warner Bros. Not because they will make more money by moving this film to next month, but because this film is hardly light entertainment. I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but I think audiences need something light and fun to take their minds off of things right now.

    Denzel rocks!

    by lotharius iii

I can't wait to see Denzel give another great performance in a movie where he can really let himself shine. I am excited about "Training Day" because of him, however, I get frightened everytime I see the trailer because the frist thing to come to my mind if the movie "Gang Related." You know the James Belushi cop/gang movie with 2Pac. Something about cops-that-aren't-really-good-guys-in-the-inner-city really terrifies me, mostly on the ground that they are absolutely terrible. The last time there was a good one was Gene Hackman's Popeye Doyle in "The French Connection" So I'm semi-reluctant to be first in line for this. By the way, why does everyone want to dog "AI" so damn bad. I thought it was great, and I'm sick and tired of all you guys out there throwing an insult of that movie into any forum. Let it go. If you liked it: wonderful because you have taste and you actually sat through the film and thought about it. If you hated it: fine but quit bringing it up so you can sound like you're saying something of importance. But I do agree with insulting "Summer Catch." WB should issue an apology to any poor person who lost a large portion of their brain cells from watchint that thing.
