BONO Working On GANGS OF NEW YORK Soundtrack!'
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Not sure if this means "soundtrack" like he's contributing songs (which I hope is not the case) or that he's working on the actual score for the film, but there's an Italian website called CALTANET CINEMA, one of our regular Euro-AICN contributors, that posted the story that Bono will be part of the score to Martin Scorsese's upcoming GANGS OF NEW YORK.
If he's working on the score, that excites me. He's made powerful contributions to film scores in the past, and this film is going to need a special sort of aural wallpaper to tie it all together. We'll check further into this and see if there are any other guests on the soundtrack, and whether or not we're talking about songs.
"Moriarty" out.

Sound bad...bugger off or the equivalent...

Look, whether you like U2 or not, this could be a really cool thing. Bono and the boys continue to create well-produced sonic textures and I think this could be really cool. Marty knows best you schmucks -leave him be and let the boy work.

Hmmm, I wonder who is more clued up on movie scoring.
Scorsese, the man who over the past 30 years has brought us some of the most visually inventive & challenging chracter driven pieces of influential cinema with impeccable soundtracks.
Or a spotty no mates Hobbitophile undoubtedly harbouring a rather unhealthy "Slipknot" obsession the attention span of a nemotode and absolutely no girlfriend what-so-ever.
Answers on a postcard to:
"Scorsese really does know what he's doing you twat"
Lord "Dorken",
Hell, -
Hmmm,
Touch a nerve Dorken? My point was nothing to do with U2 (although I am by no means a fan, I can acknowledge the fact that they have been consistently making quality rock since the early 80's) it is more to do with the fact that if Scorsese has chosen to work with Bono, it has nothing to do with commercialism, but absolutely everything to do with HIS vision & HIS art.
As for my cracks about your relationship status, relax young fella, I was merely yanking your chain.
It appears that extensive enforced masturbation may not make you blind but it sure makes you cranky. -
Take another look at Goodfellas & Casino young Dorken, their soundtracks are formed of "Pop" songs. Granted, pop spanning 3 or 4 decades but pop never the less.
Also, do be careful how you bandy the prefix "Neo-" around as you end up sounding both ignorant & pretentious.
"Neo-Pop?" means precisely nothing.
Oh and I have to wait for uber-tosser Kevin Smith to teach me the glories of free speech? I bloody hope not.
I'd like to think that my frames of reference stretch a little earlier than 1977 when it comes to the appreciation of the art of cinema.

I feel like I walked into the middle of a prize fight! Anyway, lets not forget that Elmer Bernstein is scoring this movie, as he has done for Scorsese many times in the past, so IMHO I doubt very seriously the score will end up very Neo-anything but will be pretty authentic to the period. Who knows what if anything Bono will end up contributing to the film. Since the story revolves around Irish-Americans, maybe his input is based upon his heritage, maybe Scorsese wants a little more edge to the music, who knows. I trust Scorsese to know exactly what music he wants and needs for this film and it will be perfect.

For those who aren't familiar with U2's previous collaborations, or wish to slag them off as a Pop act, here's a little primer to give you some perspective. In the mid 80's, The Edge scored an Irish film titled Captive (which also featured vocals from Sinead O'Connor). In the early 90's Bono and Edge contributed an instrumental track to the British theatrical production of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. They also contributed original music to the Michaelangelo Antonioni/Wim Wenders film Beyond the Clouds. They are also well known for contrubuting original songs to other Wim Wenders films, including last year's Million Dollar Hotel. But what many may not know is that in 1995 U2 collaborated with ambient godfather Brian Eno under the name Passengers, and the resulting album Original Soundtracks I was a half-instrumental/half-vocal collection of pieces for films real and imagined. The band would be playing around, and Eno would suggest a story for the images that were conjured up by the music. The liner notes describe the plot of each film, both the real and the fake. Some real films listed with the album include GHOST IN THE SHELL, the documentary Miss Sarajevo, Jeff Koon's Elvis ate America, and the aforementioned Antonioni film. One of the pieces, "Always Forever Now" was featured in Michael Mann's Heat. So if anyone is interested in some very non-Pop and non-traditional film score work, I suggest you check out this overlooked gem. It sounds like nothing U2 has done, before or since. I assume if this rumor is true Scorcese will find a legitimate use for Bono's perspective, not a commercial one.

than the alternative. Just for the record, I AM a LotR fan and this is NOT a LotR tb. Perhaps Scorsese, with his "limited" experience understands what works a bit better than you do and felt that an Irish band would be extremely suitable for the movie. Albumen, I don't think we touched a nerve...I think we did jumping jacks on the poor man's central nervous system. don't get a girlfriend, dude, get a life!____A Bee Without A Girlfriend (hee hee)

I'm glad someone else remembers this way over looked project. I have only heard of one song being released from it. "Alex decends into Hell" was a B-side on The Fly. I imagine some of it wound up in Achtung Baby, but I'd kill to hear the other stuff from it. I think Bono would have A LOT to contribute to Gangs! Check out "Exit".

Anybody interested in a taste of what Bono might offer should pick up the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack (available anywhere) or try getting it off Gnutella. It was basically Bono's baby, and he was more or less the captain of the ship. There are a couple of original U2 tracks on there as well. Some interesting stuff.
-
Bono also contributed a couple songs to the " In the Name of the Father" soundtrack. If you want to hear some Bono, Edge, Brian Eno, instrumental scores go get the album titled "Passengers". Its an entire concept album of several made up movie scores.
BTW, Bono and U2 are without a doubt the BEST band of the last 20 years. They transcend all types of music, have a number of songs intergrated into popular culture, and still remain true to music and their fans. They are one of the most respected and requested artists to work with AND they still have time for humane causes. dBono would be a welcome addition to the GONY soundtrack and score. -
Iwould agree with you when you say that companies that use a movie to sell a soundtrack are ruining the movie industy. Just about every tired summer blockbuster has a trite jingle that is used solely to market the movie. The point is that its not like Scorsez is going to rehash old U2 songs and place them in intergal parts of Gangs of New York. You're not going to see Daniel Day-Lewis fighting to the strains of " Sunday Bloody Sunday" . Bono will create original music for the movie. If you don't think he can do it then obviously you haven't listened to enough U2. Then again you're entitled to your opinion: I'm no Kevin Smith!!!
-
The point is that no matter what you hear what news whether it sounds cool to you or you think whaaat?! that deep in your heart you gotta know that this movie's gonna be awesome. Scorsese's the greatest director working today and possibly ever. His ability to tell a story combining every element of cinema is unsurpassed. No one uses the camera better. No one uses actors better. No one uses music better. No one uses better lighting, sound effects, blah, blah, blah. Damn, I hope there are some test screening reviews soon. I might wet my diaper.

Okay, I know Bono is pretty pretensious and creepy. But musical taste is subjective. To the guy who thinks U2's just some marketing ploy by MTV to program our minds or some shit that's cool and all but damn I think U2 makes some kick ass sounding music. Often when I'm listening to they're music I wonder what it must be like to produce them or be in the studio when they're recording just watching Bono put that much emotion into every take. I mean I don't know if his feelings are genuine when he sings or not (let's face it who among us would be able to really have his heart in it every time in a little room like that?), but I don't care. He has a great voice and it sounds so true. Listen to the song "All I Want is You". That shit moves me so damn much.
