MATRIX 2 Is About WHAT'!

Published at:  Sep 04, 2001 6:24:04 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I'm familiar with the Nightbreed, but I'm not familiar with the Grahambreed. Still, that's who sent me a link to an article that appeared online from the SUN-HERALD, an Australian newspaper. It's all about THE MATRIX 2 and an upcoming cattle call for tall men to be in the film. Near the end of the article, there's a couple of tidbits lumped together as "INSIDE THE MATRIX." Check this out:

"The storyline of MATRIX 2 remains top secret, but insiders have revealed cloning is the key theme of the movie. Neo (Keanu Reeves) is set to fight 100 versions of himself in a stunning action sequence."

Can you hear me rolling my eyes from where you are? Either this reporter is just completely confused about what she's heard so far (my vote), or the Wachowskis are making the third major SF franchise film about cloning (joining STAR WARS and STAR TREK), which would be about two too many in my book. When we recently shot the pilot for the Ain't It Cool News television show, I had to work with a motion-capture unit. The guys who put me in the suit and worked the capture equipment had done some work on MATRIX RELOADED, and they told me about a scene involving Neo fighting 100 opponents, but they said the character who got replicated was one of the Agents.

If this rumor starts popping up in other places in the days ahead, discount it. Besides, you're going to want to come back later this week for a MATRIX story that promises to have some real answers about what's going on with the supposed third film, what the bond company is nervous about, and what just might scuttle the franchise altogether. Until then...

CHECK OUT THE ORIGINAL STORY HERE!!

"Moriarty" out.

....is there any real doubt that these next two films are going to really kick ass? It's debatable, but Matrix:Reloaded is potentially up there with Empire as one of the most anticipated sequels of all time.

Can someone please clear up the mystery as to whether or not Aalayiah (sp?) started filming the matrix sequels or not before her untimely demise? I've heard virtually nothing of this, so I'm guessing she hadn't started filming yet.

The echoing of the "whoas" in this movie will be deafening. I think this story was picked up by Reuters as well. I read something this morning about a call being put out for Australian men between six feet and six two to stand in for Keanu.

    by farfrumworkin

I want to hear more about this TV show of Harry's! That's one of my most antisipated upcoming events. Harry, tell us more. You post every little detail about Matrix and Spiderman and such, but you have your own piece of cinematic (albeit small screen) coolness, so dish! Also, Matrix, Star Wars and Star Trek is THREE more than needed in my book, not just two. I for one and probably many, am still carying around residual clone hatred from the abysmal Clone Saga from Spiderman. I hope to GOD that Star Wars: The Clones Attack doesn't end up like that.

I've read that thing earlier. This very site posted an excerpt from a speech held by producer Joel Silver or some other management guy. And this was in late January this year. Still I don't think 100 Keanus sounds better or a bit exiting than one Keanu. Because the man isn't particular interesting.

    Joel Silver's Aalliyah comments

    by darth nash

Joel Silver said on ET or Access Hollywood last night (can't remember which) that Aaliyah's scenes would be reshot...which leads me to believe that they are going to get a new actress for the role of "Zee"....Let's hope the do justice to the character by getting the right person...
Oh, and in response to the earlier comment...Aaliyah's name is pronounced like "Muhammed Ali-ah"....minus the Muhammed.

The force is strong in this one.

    by recognizer

Sounds kinda Mortal-Kombatty, to me. Actually, I think that while replication of some sort may be a kind of "theme fight" in the movie, we've all read the copious quasi-spoilage indicating that the movie is "about" Viruses, on the whole. Those wacky guys with the silver dreds and trenchcoats who 'warp and corrupt the matrix'. And hey, if Neo has to fight 100 Neos or 100 Smiths... I don't know if that necessarily makes the movie into another Clone of Attack of the Clones (though I swore to my self I'd never make a clone joke about that title). By the way, just my obligatory pontification about that title: I would have suggested "DESTROY ALL CLONES!!!".

    by jollydwarf

So you print something that you can't even believe could be feasibly real? As I'm sure others have mentioned, it's supposed to be a fight with one hundred agents. Why even bother with this barely credible nonsense? And just for the record, Aaliyah's filming was only 80% done for "Matrix 2: Reloaded." No recasting announcements yet. Don't be surprised if that pushes each of the films back yet another 6 months. Incidentally, I understand that Howard Stern is looking for one hundred 4'3" shrunken-headed black male dwarves for "Star Whores Episode 1/2: Attack of the Beets". Must also thoroughly hate drunken white male dwarves who answer to the name "Hank."

    by jccalhoun

Is it a coincidence that this sounds just like one of the scenes from jet li's the one? I think that someone is confused after all, neo is the one, and jet was at one point contacted about being in the sequel. I think that they got confused between the matrix and the one.

    Moriarty the Rat

    by eraser_x

Have you ever heard anything like the following? (e.g., on TV or in a newspaper) "... Police caught the mass murderer on an anonymous tip from an anonymous coworker. The anonymous coworker overheard the mass murder confessing to the crime while the anonymous coworker was sitting in her own cubicle, which is to the immediate right of the mass murderer's cubicle. The anonymous coworker has red hair and is the only female employee in the office, where she is the only office manager. The name of the anonymous coworker is being kept secret to protect her from possible retaliation by the mass murderer..." Something about the way Moriarty ratted out the motion-capture crew, who probably violated a confidentiality agreement, reminded me of those newscasters.

The Final word on Aaliyah's replacement

    by siskels ghost

Aalyahs replacement will be one of the following:
Jada Pinkett, Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry, Vivica A. Fox, (what the hell is with the "A"? Like there's another VIvica on the planet) or that other black chick with the giant forehead. We know for a fact that one of these will replace Aaliyah, because it appears that these 5 are the only black chicks allowed in front of a movie camera. (WB and UPN does not count) Or.....maybe Joel Silver will grab someone from craft services to take her place.

    by jcphoenix

To respond to the person who posted earlier on this site about how much work Aaliyah did, according to www.upcomingmovies.com, she had done most of matrix 2, and had been finishing up principle photography for matrix 3. Whether or not she finished filming for matrix 3 remains unknown, however, she will still most likely be replaced.

I'm sorry, but as soon as i heard about that ridiculous fight (be it Neo vs himself or vs agents) i was dissapointed. Reply to Talkback

  • Obviously, I disagree with the above opinion that holding Matrix Reloaded until 2003 is a bad idea. Though the Matrix franchise is the closest thing to a real challenger/pretender to the throne that the Star Wars franchise has, from the early reports I've received AOTC will thoroughly kick maximum tail. If I were the Matrix people I'd be quaking in my boots, too. Besides, if history is to judge four years between films is not a long wait. Look at the phenomenal sucess of the Terminator and Alien franchises for proof.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Dark Horizons stated that Aaliyah had shot roughly two weeks for Matrix 2 and nothing from Matrix 3- from one of the guys on the Matrix 2 set. That should make replacing her relatively easy. However, we're still left with the loss of a beautiful and talented performer. Man, I'm still hurting.

AUSTRALIA AND A NEW TAX INCENTIVE

    by wotsit

Yesterday the Australian government, (who normally seem to have nothing better to do than petty bickering and obsessive "brazil" like scrutiny of taxation instead of encouraging economic development and funding growth industries) have decided, in their hamster sized wisdom, to grant financial incentive to the film industry. Finally !!! some sense of the progressive you ask ? here is the article:"THE Federal Government has given the Australian film industry a $90 million boost. The $92.72 million package unveiled by federal Communications Minister Senator Richard Alston also includes tax incentives to make Australia more attractive to foreign film companies. The 12.5 per cent tax offset will be available to companies with a minimum Australian expenditure of $15 million."Hey Oz, better than trying to kill your industry dead (like a Moulin Rouge sized taxation gibbet) It is a great pity NZ and OZ stifle their industries to death, like some oppressive greedy parent, and only react to revive the child at the last moment...

  • first to moriarty, it's FOUR major sci-fi series(the biggest four as well, i believe) that have gone into clone territory. have you forgotten the awful but pretty(or just pretty awful) ALIEN:RESURRECTION? granted, it's not an upcoming flick like the others you mentioned, but i felt it should be brought up. to "jetlii"... isn't silver producing both films? to "bastardly"... they did rip off several films(or is it "payed homage to"), but it is seldom that directors do it as well as the wachowskis'. to "siskels ghost"... make that 3 1/2, jada pinkett is already in MATRIX 2. but wait! i've got it, they could rewrite aaliyah's(R.I.P.) part and have jada play a clone of jada! yay! to "technodrome"... haven't fights of one against a hundred been a kung fu movie staple for years now? maybe in MATRIX 2, since neo is so fast, they won't bother attacking one at a time, which has always bugged me about kung fu films(with exceptions, such as DRUNKEN MASTER 2). to "king rentboy"... well, it's been 2 years since the first film, and people still care. as for the trends, THE CROW has aged very well, and that was one of those "dark techno" and "hip" movies back when it came out. fifteen years from now, who knows? but in 2030(or so... hehe), when leather, cool sunglasses and guns are "hip" again, people might say the flick has aged well. as for marilyn manson, the album he alienated much of his fan base with; MECHANICAL ANIMALS, is one of the best rock records i've heard in a long time, give it a listen. to "domi'sinnerchild"(and whoever posted it origionally)... hehe, kinda funny....... anyway, here's to the flick kicking ass like i felt the first did. damn, i had to open another AICN window to get the names right. TWO TIMES THE POP-UPS IS TOO MUCH!!!(but wait, so is one pop-up) -Batty out.

    Attack of the Clones

    by coopcooper

i don't know why anyone would bitch about the second star wars prequel having something to do with clones. we've known about the clone wars since the first trilogy. and that 100 man fight is old news anyway. whiny motherfuckers. oh, and how come no one harps on the wachowski's for "ripping off" elements of the bible and various other religious themes. and why not tear apart the original star wars trilogy for everything "ripped off" from mythology, westerns, ww2 movies, and swashbuckling shit. oh wait! no one's allowed influences! christ, it was a really fucking good sci-fi action film that actually was capable of inspiring thought and intelligent conversation, exploring themes of reality and faith as well as story-telling. but hey, and there's no sarcasm meant here, you can't please everybody. if you don't like a movie, that's fine. but just because you don't like something doesn't mean it sucks across the board. i mean, we're not talking about battlefield earth here, were talking about a well-made film. relax a little.
