Reports from Lincoln Center on Richard Linklater's WAKING LIFE 'an animated SLACKER''

Hey folks, Harry here... Here's a project that isn't quite on anybody's radar just yet. You see... There is this project called... WAKING LIFE, and what it is... as best I can tell... is an animated experimental feature film that Linklater is doing here in Austin using this super animation software developed by Bob Sabiston... basically, Linklater shot his film on DV, I believe, then fed that into this software that Sabiston developed... and then a variety of animators begin working on transforming it... sticking to no style guides... working freely with their own techniques... I've seen ever so brief moments and I have to tell you... it does look stunning... Here are some images... and some reports from up at Lincoln Center....

got a chance to see bits of richard linklater's "waking life" at lincoln center this evening as part of the "next generation of film" series. what was shown was absolutely incredible; if you have seen the mtv clips from the past, you will be blown away at the evolution of this type of animation. (plus it was really cool to see "mitch" from "dazed and confused" back in action as he stars in it...) along with richard was his producer friend and the creator of the software responsible for the animation techniques used in the film. after showing parts of the film, he took place in an question and answer session. he proved to be an incredibly cool guy who also took alot of time afterwards to answer everyone's questions. the film currently doesn't have a distributor and he is unsure when it will be released; he expects it to be completed in the spring of 2001.

ps: the topic of dvd's came up as someone asked if he would eventually release the film on dvd with the actual non-animated scenes included. he said it was a possibility. interestingly, he said he would love to play with "slacker" on dvd as he regains the rights to it in two years. he also said he would love to record a commentary track for "dazed and confused" at some point.

And now for Sugar Death...

Hi. I was at a screening of Dazed and Confused in NYC earlier tonight at which Richard Linklater talked about and showed off some scenes from his new film. Its an animated feature that from the clips and descriptions given will be like an animated Slacker. This movie must be seen. Its indescribable how Linklater managed to transform reality into animation. Very cool stuff. He said it was about 85% done and there was no distribution at all. It was also said that a deluxe dvd of it was in the planning since the beginning of the film. He also said that he'd like to make dvd's of Slacker and Dazed and Confused. Although there already is a Dazed dvd, its just the film and no extras. He stated he was never asked to do a commentary for either of these films but would like to. He talked about a lot of other interesting stuff including his influences, Kevin Smith, and Texas, but I can't remember a lot of it exactly enough to talk about.
