The Sandwich Knight Doesn't Hate MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND!!

Merrick again...

I sure have despised the clips and trailers for this film; they looked obvious, simple minded, lifeless, unamusing, and silly.

However, I always leave a little room for hope. And, according to The Sandwich Knight, MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND may not be the wash many have assumed.

I've had many ex girlfriends, and none of them were "super." But most of them were crazy, so I'm kind of glad they weren't "super".

Here's The Sandwich Knight with a look at the film...

Hey All,

Last night I attended a NYC screening of “My Super Ex-Girlfriend”. For those of you who don’t know - This is latest film by Ivan “Ghost Busters” Reitman and stars Uma, as a super hot, super heroine “G-girl” who hooks up with Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) a sex starved dweeb with a penchant for dating psycho-chicks.

If you haven’t guessed it already, she’s a clingy, jealous girlfriend who also saves the day Superhero style. Poor regular schmo Matt just needs a little sex and can’t resist the bodacious G-girl – even in her Clark Kent style disguise. Their initial meeting does a great job setting the oldest of stories in motion. Boy meets G-girl. Boy wants to sleep with G-girl. Boy wants to break up with G-girl without getting a chainsaw in his butt.

“My Super Ex-Girlfriend” hits the ground (and a few bad-guys) running and zooms along quickly but do not expect anything too deep here. Super-Ex is well paced and does have enough twists and turns to keep it all interesting. And if you’ve seen the commercials you know the major plot twist. [Spoilage] Just when she falls in love, he wants to end their whirlwind relationship. [End Spoilage]

That’s when the movie gets really fun. Uma on the rampage… Hot. Though their too brief “dating” experience should have been explored in more depth. Opportunity missed? There are enough laughs – It’s not “Stripes”, “Old School” or “Animal House” by any means. (“Animal House” was the first R-rated film I ever snuck into... So, not much compares.) And Super-Ex does have one hysterically funny moment – [Brief Spoilage] it involves a headboard. [End Spoilage]

At times Super-Ex takes an original take on the whole superhero thing. For example: G-girl’s costume is torn up when bullets hit her. Oh, don’t worry, they bounce off her skin (And mange to take costume material with them!).

Sadly, I wished they had shot her up a bit more... But I digress. So, while the relationship, fatal attraction and subsequent breakup are nice twists to the genre, most of the Superhero stuff is all standard. (Except for the missile scene) Maybe this is an effort get the masses to accept the movie. To me it seemed a bit lazy. G-girl is strong, shoots heat beams from her eyes and flies… Eh.

But she’s not the Protagonist. Luke Wilson is. Personally, I’m not a Luke Wilson fan. He’s a bit blah. And that is definitely a stunt butt… Uh…Anyway, he was good in the part and often made me laugh out loud with just a desperate look.

Should he be a leading man? No.

Do I believe he could actually hook up with Uma? No.

Did he carry the movie? No. Uma did. In true heroine fashion Uma used all her super powers, hefted the movie up onto her shoulders and saved the day. Her performance was inspired, exuberant and a bit over-the-top psycho. Shark anyone? Basically, she played G-girl perfectly. The biggest reason to see this film is Uma Thurman. Uma takes hold of G-girl and soars.

Here’s the bad news - Eddie Izzard is dull. I never thought I’d write that. Not his fault though. He had very little to do. That’s probably because he plays the arch-enemy of G-girl and not the arch-enemy of the male lead… What a waste.

Wanda Sykes walks on screen, tells a joke and exits stage right.

Anna Faris as the “other woman” is cute and gets the job done but she is no Uma. Though she does look hot in her last scene. Rainn Wilson tries to play the funny sidekick and has some very funny lines but isn’t very funny. Many of his jokes fall flat or go unnoticed. His best scene was after the credits.

“My Super Ex-Girlfriend” was an enjoyable albeit light weight “safe” film. Never dull and rarely amazing, it did hit on the reality of dating a psycho.

Yes, I’ve dated one (or two) though none had superpowers. Whew. I wish the ending had been a bit more inspired but it worked well enough.

If you don’t expect a comedy on the level of say “Big” or “40 Year-Old Virgin” you’ll have a very good time, laugh and leave with a new respect for all that is Uma.

Now go on and rip me apart… Call me the Sandwich Knight
