Bond Fans Worldwide Getting Angry... And Missing The Point Completely?!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Online petitions are funny things. Nine times out of ten, they are complete wastes of time, and even that tenth time, they don’t really change anything. The most you can ever hope to do is point out to someone that there is a passionate fan base united on this point or that. The internet has proven to be a good way to gather diverse groups of fans in one “place,” if nothing else, and right now, it seems that there’s a whole lot of people with James Bond on their minds.

Now, Harry and I are going to be doing something special involving CASINO ROYALE sometime in the very near future, but in the meantime, take a look at this:

hey harry, seen this yet?

If you go take a look at that site, you’ll see a bunch of outrage over the casting of Daniel Craig from a bunch of “life-long Bond fans.”

So if you’re life-long Bond fans, why are you missing the point so completely?

If you really want to be outraged about something, how about finally growing a pair of balls and calling for the removal of Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson as producers of the Bond franchise? Casting doesn’t matter, and will NEVER matter, until the franchise is finally in the hands of someone with respect for the source material and the character that Ian Fleming created. Bitching because Daniel Craig has the wrong hair color or because he’s not a pretty boy demonstrates to me that you have no idea what made James Bond an icon in the first place. You want to work up a head of steam? How about being pissed that they’re finally going to adapt one of the best books Fleming wrote, and they’ve decided to rape it the way they’ve always raped his work?

How about getting upset that once again product placement seems more important than creating a product worth watching?

Or for fuck’s sake, why aren’t you angry about the asinine and completely insane decision to make it poker instead of baccarat?

I agree that there are things to be concerned about right now in the Bond franchise, and I have been saying for weeks to people around me that this film already smells like one of the year’s big embarrassments. But the casting of Daniel Craig may turn out to be the one thing they did right. If you really love James Bond, then you need to get your priorities straight and look at where the rot that is slowly tearing this franchise apart began. It’s not with an actor who has no real power over the creative direction of the series, and it’s not over whether or not someone’s a pretty boy.

Then again, I never fail to be amazed at how many so-called Bond fans have never cracked a book in their lives, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised at all.

"Moriarty" out.
