WALK THE LINE's James Mangold catches the 3:10 TO YUMA!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It seems WALK THE LINE director James Mangold, along with his producer and wife Cathy Konrad, is officially going to be working on the Western remake 3:10 TO YUMA for Columbia Pictures. Mangold will direct the picture about an outlaw that is captured in a small town and the rancher that is charged with taking him, in secret, to a nearby town with a train station where he is to sit and wait with the sharp-witted outlaw until the 3:10 train to Yuma can pick him up. The whole time, the outlaw's gang is looking for him.

The original flick, starring Glenn Ford (yep, SUPERMAN's earth daddy) and Van Heflin, was based on a story by Elmore Leonard. It's a great flick if you want to add it to the Netflix queue, one I first saw at one of the Tarantino Fests. Tarantino actually talked about wanting to remake the flick. Looks like he lost his chance.

This is a great story to see retold. It's more about the battle of wits between this good-hearted rancher and this sly, mean, but very smart outlaw... very much a character piece. I'd love to see two great actors thrown in there. I'm sure Joaquin Phoenix is a shoe-in for the outlaw role, but we'll see how the casting goes soon enough, since they expect to start shooting this summer. What do you folks think of this development?
